Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!Length: 1 hour 35 minutesSynopsis: Tonight (1/2/25), in our Thursday night Pirkei Avos shiur for women, we took up an intriguing mishnah about the effects of mitzvos and aveiros. We ended up with two solid interpretations - one that emerged during the shiur, and another based on an article I wrote back in 2012 - as well as a fundamental discourse on reward and punishment according to Rabbeinu Bachya, which we (sadly) didn't have time to fully tie back into our understanding of the mishnah. Definitely a worthwhile learning session, even if we didn't bring it to an elegant close!-----מקורות:אבות ד:יארש"ירמב"םרבינו יונהרבינו בחיי - אבות ד:יא;ב; א:גRabbi Matt Schneeweiss, "Angelic Advocates and Accusers" https://kolhaseridim.blogspot.com/2015/07/angelic-advocates-and-accusers.html-----This week's Torah content has been sponsored l'zecher nishmas Yosef Yoshayahu ben Yechezkel Eliezer, whose yahrzeit is on the 3rd of Teves. In this premiere episode of Judaism Demystified's "Getting to Know the Rishonim" series, we dive into the life and legacy of Rabbi Levi ben Gershon, also known as RaLBaG or Gersonides, a prominent medieval French Jewish philosopher, Talmudist, mathematician, physician and astronomer/astrologer. We uncover who Ralbag was, shedding light on his immense contributions not just to Jewish thought but also to the realms of science and philosophy. Rabbi Matt Schneeweiss and Rabbi Dovid Campbell share their personal journeys of discovering Ralbag's work, with Rabbi Campbell delving into Ralbag's scientific and philosophical achievements, and Rabbi Schneeweiss focusing on the structure and depth of Ralbag's Tanakh commentary. The conversation then zooms in on Ralbag's unique interpretation of Akedat Yitzhak (The Binding of Isaac), particularly his novel approach to the concept of "nisayon" or "Divine test." Rabbi Campbell takes the reins to explain how this ties into Ralbag's sophisticated understanding of Divine knowledge. As Rabbi Schneeweiss navigates through Ralbag's commentary, Rabbi Campbell interjects with insights into Ralbag's views on human perfection and prophecy, offering listeners a comprehensive understanding of Ralbag's philosophical underpinnings. Rabbi Schneeweiss rounds off the discussion on the Akedah, exploring the practical outcomes and lessons derived from the narrative, known as "toalot" in Ralbag's framework. He also introduces listeners to the Maaliot Edition, providing a teaser for the rich, multifaceted nature of Ralbag's commentary. This episode not only offers an in-depth look at Ralbag's approach to one of Judaism's pivotal narratives but also invites listeners into the broader, intricate tapestry of Jewish scholastic heritage through the lens of one of its most profound thinkers. *This episode is dedicated to the refua shelema of our dear friend Yaakov ben Haya Malakh and to the neshama of Meir ben Moshe a'h — Abdolrahim Ilian, the late father of our dear friend, Rod Ilian. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/judaismdemystified/support

Length: 1 hour 35 minutesSynopsis: The YBT Sunday Shiur I gave this morning (1/7/24) is an updated version of a shiur I gave exactly two years ago (1/7/22). The focus of the shiur is the Sforno's answer to two basic questions: (1) Who carried out Makkas Bechoros (the Plague of the Firstborn)? (2) What is the purpose of the Korban Pesach (Passover sacrifice)? What makes Sforno's approach counterintuitive? Because he holds that the Korban Pesach has absolutely nothing to do with Makkas Bechoros. Don't believe me? In this fascinating interview, Rabbi Matt Schneeweiss tackles timeless questions that have ignited debates for centuries: "Can God create a rock He can't lift?" "Can God do anything and everything?" and "Can God do the impossible?" Approaching the question first from the standpoint of logic, and then through the interpretations of prominent medieval commentators (Rambam, Meiri, Saadia Gaon, R' Yosef Albo, and Ramban), Rabbi Schneeweiss explores the implications of these queries for our belief in Hashem. He skillfully navigates the delicate balance between acknowledging God's unlimited power and recognizing the constraints of human logic. The discussion illuminates the complexities of divine power and its implications for our beliefs, showcasing the depth and richness of the theological discourse of our sages of blessed memory. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/judaismdemystified/support

Have you ever checked your phone while learning in a shiur, chavrusa, or even by yourself? This might seem innocuous, but Chazal teach us in Pirkei Avos that if you interrupt your learning to remark on the beauty of a tree or a field, then the Torah considers it as though you are "liable for your soul." This morning (2/26/23), I gave a YBT Sunday Shiur on that mishnah. After a brief methodological intro, we learned and discussed four different approaches to the mishnah with their practical implications; we concluded with some modern findings which have implications for how to level up not only in our learning, but in our professional lives as well.Note: This is an updated version of a shiur I gave to my women's Thursday Night Pirkei Avos shiur on 12/29/22 entitled Avos 3:9 - Interrupting Torah for a Tree.----------This shiur is dedicated to the memory of my Popo (grandmother), Helen Chang (1924 - 2/1/2023) and my student, Adira Koffsky (2004 - 2/1/2023)----------מקורות:רמב"ם – הקדמה לשמונה פרקיםמשלי א:ד-ה; יח:טרמב"ן - במדבר י:להרש"י - אבות א:טוMoshe Halbertal, Maimonides: Life and Thought (2015)אבות ג:ה,ט,ימאיריאברבנאלרבינו יונהרש"ירשב"ץר' יעקב ב"ר שמשוןמדרש שמואלרש"י - שבת דף ל עמוד בRabbi Israel Chait, Transcription of shiur on Pirkei Avos 3:9Selective Attention Test (Simons and Chabris)Cal Newport, Deep Work (2016)-----If you have questions, comments, or feedback, I would love to hear from you! Length: 1 hour 9 minutesSynopsis: At the beginning of this month we commenced our analysis of Shema Koleinu and set up a bunch of questions. We then spent the last two weeks leveling up our understanding of how tefilah works based on the Sefer ha'Ikkarim. This evening (2/22/23), in our Wednesday night Tefilah shiur, we returned to Shema Koleinu, armed with our new understanding. After reviewing the berachah, our questions (to which we added a few), and what we learned over the past two weeks, we attempted to understand what it means to ask Hashem to listen to our tefilah. We came up with a solid approach, and then we began learning the Abudirham. I'm happy with where we are now, and I'm optimistic about the ideas to come (בג"ה)!-----מקורות:רמב"ם - משנה תורה: הקדמה, סיום מנין המצוותרמב"ם - מורה הנבוכים א:מהאבודרהם - עמידה, שמע קולנודברים כו:א-יאשמות ב:כג-כה -----The Torah content for this week has been sponsored by Sarah and Moshe Eisen, with the following message: "Dedicated in honor of Popo, who shined bright and brought joy to so many of us. I almost don't want to title this Day #2 of yesterday's pasuk, but I will because that's technically what it is. We began by reviewing yesterday's many translations, questions, and approaches. We then learned Rabbeinu Yonah whose masterful commentary FURTHER elucidated the definitions of chochmah, tevunah, and daas from the previous two pesukim. There remains a lot of work to be done, and it's possible we'll revisit this on Friday, but for now, I'm just thankful that we were able to gain such clarity from this gem of a Rabbeinu Yonah.-----מקורות:משלי כד:ה-ורבינו יונה -----The Torah content for this week has been sponsored by Sarah and Moshe Eisen, with the following message: "Dedicated in honor of Popo, who shined bright and brought joy to so many of us. Earlier this year I gave a three-part shiur (in my Machshavah Lab series for women) on a mishnah in Pirkei Avos about how Hashem judges the world. The question that sparked the shiur was: What is this doing HERE? Avos is a practical masechta about ethics - not metaphysics! Thankfully, we found a commentator who translates these seemingly metaphysical ideas into practical guidelines for receiving a good judgment. Whether you missed last year's shiur or could use a review, I can promise you that today's YBT Sunday shiur (9/25/22, Erev Rosh ha'Shanah) will enhance your Aseres Ymei Teshuvah.----------מקורות:אבות ג:טורד"ק - ספר השורשים, צ.פ.ה. + ר.ש.ה.רמב"ם - פירוש המשניות, אבות ג:יח; שמונה פרקים פרק ב+חספורנו - אבות ג:יטרמב"ם - משנה תורה: הלכות תשובה ה:א-גרש"י, תוספות - עירובין דף כב עמוד ארש"י - סנהדרין דף קיא עמודים א-בתוספות - בבא קמא דף נ עמוד ברמב"ם - משנה תורה: הלכות יסודי התורה ג:יאMortimer J. Rabbi Schneeweiss discusses his conversion to Judaism in 11th grade, identifying as Shomer Torah U'Mitzvot (and not a "rationalist"), using Bruce Lee's philosophy for teaching, what it means to be a Stoic Jew, the methodology of Mishlei (Proverbs), Kohelet (Ecclesiastes), and Shir HaShirim (Song of Songs), why it's important to learn Tehillim (Psalms) instead of reading it as an incantation, why we pray if we can't change God's mind, his "Pivot Point" system, and the best resources to learn about the Ethics of Stoicism and the great Stoics.
