On its surface, the pasuk addresses the effect of evil rulers on destitute people, but Reish Lakish uses it as an aggadic introduction to the Megilah. Today we developed our own approach and examined a few meforshim. After a brief review, a question led us on an unplanned detour through his presentation of angels in the Mishneh Torah. We then returned to the central question: Why are angels depicted as physical, and why are those depictions sometimes so wacky? We offered three answers and concluded with the Rambam's statement about how we should relate to people who insist on believing that angels are physical.-----מקורות:רמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות יסודי התורה א:ה; ב:ב-טרש"י - בראשית יח:ארמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות עבודה זרה וחוקות הגוים ג:יארמב"ם - מורה הנבוכים א:מג,מט; ב:ורש"י - ישעיהו ו:א-גר' אברהם בן הרמב"ם - שמות ג:ברמב"ם - מאמר תחיית המתים-----The Torah content for the month of February is sponsored by the Koffsky family in memory of Adira Rose Koffsky a”h, whose third yahrzeit is on the 11th of Shvat. Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!Length: 56 minutesSynopsis: This morning (2/13/26), in our Friday morning Sefer Iyov series for women, I had planned to continue our analysis of the Rambam's view of angels. Instead, we did something more important: review and clarification! We did a complete review of all the main points from last time, and raised additional questions which resulted in greater clarity. Given my preface of this shiur, which underscored the importance of taking it slow and in small doses when learning metaphysics, I'm happy with how our shiur turned out. Next time, we will NOT begin with a comprehensive review, so if you plan on joining us, make sure you're caught up!-----מקורות:זרחיה בן שאלתיאל חן - משלי כה:טז-יזרמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות יסודי התורה ז:א,ורמב"ם - מורה הנבוכים ב:ו-----The Torah content for the month of February is sponsored by the Koffsky family in memory of Adira Rose Koffsky a”h, whose third yahrzeit is on the 11th of Shvat. We delved a bit deeper into the derech nigleh, trying to understand exactly what makes a person sick of his friend's presence. But our main goal was to focus on the derech nistar, which I WISH we had more time to explore! I'm especially happy with the idea we learned from Zerachiah Chein.Someone recently asked me whether I find new chidushim in Mishlei. The question had the vibe of, "Don't you get bored?" I answered that we ALWAYS find new chidushim and we rarely get to more than a handful of meforshim before we have to move on. Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!Length: 1 hour 59 minutesSynopsis: This evening (2/5/25), in our Thursday night women's shiur, we embarked toward an unknown destination, though in very specific waters. Our goal was to understand Rabbeinu Yonah's take on bitachon (trust, or security, in God). Our journey began with his essay-like commentaries on Mishlei, chapter 3. Tonight, we learned his beautifully nuanced interpretation of Mishlei 3:5, which, in an unplanned detour, we contrasted with the jaw-droppingly abhorrent take presented in The Garden of Emuna (ימח שמו). Many of our questions were left unanswered by design, because Rabbeinu Yonah has much more to say. Still, I'm happy with where we landed in understanding his view of Mishlei's fundamental stance on bitachon.-----מקורות:משלי ג:א-ימשלי כא:ל-לארבינו יונה - משלי ג:הרד"ק - ירמיהו יז:ה-חShalom Arush, "The Garden of Emuna: A Practical Guide to Life" (NOT intended as an endorsement, chas v'shalom)-----The Torah content for the month of February is sponsored by the Koffsky family in memory of Adira Rose Koffsky a”h, whose third yahrzeit is on the 11th of Shvat. After reviewing and raising questions about the first few pesukim of the allegory, we turned to the Rambam's primary treatment of angels in the Moreh, summarizing and analyzing along the way. By the end, we had a clear “Maimonidean” definition of an angel, in several formulations, along with a working theory for why such a concept is necessary. Do you hear the siren song of synergy? That means we've got a brand new Star Trek show on the horizon and Miles and Charlie want in. With Star Trek: Starfleet Academy on the horizon, our brave lads are going to squeeze back into their school uniforms and try to remember how school works as they approach three episodes of Star Trek which deal with students at SFA. In ‘The First Duty,' Wesley ‘THE BOY' Crusher gets in with a guy who looks nothing like Tom Paris and is really too invested in being with the cool kids for someone who helped saved the galaxy at least three times. Then, Jake and Nog end up on a ship with a bunch of cadets forced to grow up too fast in ‘The Valiant' and Nog drinks the kool-aid of a wanna be Kurtz just out of short trousers. Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!Length: 1 hour 7 minutesSynopsis: Last night (2/1/26), I was honored to give a shiur at Congregation Eitz Chayim of Dogwood Park (West Hempstead, NY) in memory of my dear student Adira a"h, on the occasion of her third yahrzeit. As I mention in the disclaimers toward the beginning, a friend of mine was worried that it might come across as "a wackadoodle shiur," on account of its eclectically ambitious scope and agenda. I didn't care. My goal was to give over the type of Torah that represented Adira, and that she would have enjoyed. The shiur might alternatively be titled “The Slytherin Path to Torah,” and is my attempt to demonstrate that such a path exists. If that doesn't mean anything to you - or if, as Adira's mom joked, you're prone to mistaking “Salazar Slytherin” for the name of a Chasidish rebbe you're not familiar with - don't worry. I provide the necessary background information at the beginning of the shiur. One more disclaimer I feel obligated to repeat. In the shiur, I draw upon my personal takeaways from Lawrence Kaplan's introduction to Maimonides: Between Philosophy and Halakhah, based on notes taken by Rabbi Gerald Homnick on the lectures given by the Rav (Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik zt”l) on the Guide for the Perplexed at Bernard Revel Graduate School (1950–1951). My takeaways should not be regarded as authoritative. In fact, my one regret is that I made a last-minute decision to omit an entire portion of the Rav's argument, which I subsequently realized was critical for the level of clarity I was aiming for. Oh well. If you're interested in a fuller understanding of the abstract ideas toward the end of the shiur, you should read at least Kaplan's introduction to this work. You can find my eulogy for Adira here. And my reflection on her shivah here. And my attempt to process my own grieving here.-----מקורות:פאה א:ארמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר זמנים, הלכות מגילה וחנוכה ד:ידאבות ב:טרס"ג - הקדמה לפירוש משליתמיד דף לב עמוד אמשלי א:יז-יט; גיג-טז; ח:יב-כא; י:ד; יא:יז; יד:לדמצודת דוד - משלי כה:כא-כברמב"ם - מורה הנבוכים ג:נג-נדירמיהו ט:כב-כגLawrence Kaplan, "Maimonides: Between Philosophy and Halacha" (pp.36,49-50,53)ירושלמי מכות ג:יגרמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות תלמוד תורה ה:יגBruce Lee's writings-----The Torah content for the month of February is sponsored by the Koffsky family in memory of Adira Rose Koffsky a”h, whose third yahrzeit is on the 11th of Shvat. In The First Duty, Wesley “THE BOY” Crusher gets in with a guy who looks nothing like Tom Paris and is really too invested in being with the cool kids for someone who helped saved the galaxy at least three times. Then, Jake and Nog end up on a ship with a bunch of cadets forced to grow up too fast in The Valiant and Nog drinks the kool-aid of a wanna be Kurtz just out of short trousers. Then we head into the 32nd Century as Tilly and Adira have to debate what's worse, dealing with energy absorbing creatures on an ice-planet or dealing with a bunch of angsty kids with emotional baggage? We've made it past the galactic barrier and no one's gotten tinfoil eyes so it looks like the mission is a go in "Rosetta"! But on the way, we spot some neat Dyson rings and a deserted planet, and decide the latter is the more intriguing place to visit. But it pans out when it seems poor atmospheric safety standards may hold the key to communicating with Species 10-C! Also this week: nerfing Zora, failing Adira, and reading science fiction! Season 4 of "Discovery" starts with a BANG! Haha, no but seriously a planet gets blown up in "Kobayashi Maru". Meanwhile, Tilly and Adira have to save a space station that's gotten all squiddled and is tumbling out of control during a mission overseen by the Federation's new apparently-micromanager President. But is there something else going on? Also this week: uniform upgrades, tonal shifts, and the monsters of science fiction! In episode 196, Adira Polite challenges us to understand how God might use our voices. God named her -- "Mighty" -- and prepared her to speak before she had a voice or knew its purpose, and in her journey through trauma, sexuality, and belief, she not only discovered God, but his invitation to speak. The Fools make Camp with the goblins and Eddie, in true illusionist fashion, gives a big reveal. Bill quickly finds himself in a cutthroat situation. Adira gets a crossbow. The goblins are made an offer they can't refuse, and the Uorag finds himself on the wrong side of a Gelatinous Ooze. After dealing with the oversized Jello the Second Breakfast Club finds a cavern. FX AND TRILL. The clue trail leads Discovery to Trill, which gives Adira a chance to sort out their relationship with Gray while Burnham, Book, and Culber go on an adventure with a previous Trill host who was involved in the breakup of the Progenitors tech. Will any of this make sense as characters repeat plot details or is it a simple tour de force of VFX as Burnham and Book dodge exploding barbs launched from cloaked monsters that are indigenous to Trill! Meanwhile, Rayner gets to know the crew by forcing them to give brief, 20-word statements as a way of getting to know them. Will his rough edges rub the delicate crew the wrong way or will Tilly be able to sand those edges before Burnham gets back to the ship?Joining Bryan for this voyage through Disco's 5th season is Shereese the Sci-Fi Savage (@SciFiSavage on all social platforms). In Season 3 of Star Trek: Discovery, Michael and the crew of the USS Discovery travel 930 years into the future, and the 3188 they encounter is not what they expected. The Federation is in a much-weakened state. A catastrophic event known as "The Burn" has eliminated nearly all of the dilithium supply. The loss of the critical resource for faster-than-light travel has crippled interstellar travel and plunged the galaxy into chaos. Saru and Michael must lead the crew on a mission to reconnect the fractured remnants of the Federation and solve the mystery of The Burn.
