Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!Length: 1 hour 29 minutesSynopsis: This evening (11/6/25), in our Thursday night Pirkei Avos shiur for women, we went back and learned the beginning of the mishnah we started last week. We spent most of the time mining the depths of Rashi on the first clause-and-half. We then moved on to Rambam and Rabbeinu Yonah, attempting to compare and contrast them to discern how much they overlapped ... but then I got tired because of the clock change and ended shiur. Our plan is to come back for another pass on that next week, then move on to the second clause.-----מקורות:אבות ד:טזרש"ירמב"ם - הקדמה לפירוש המשניותרמב"םרבינו יונהרמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות תלמוד תורה ג:יב-----If you're interested in sponsoring my Torah content for one or more weeks this month, please let me know! Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!Length: 1 hour 17 minutesSynopsis: This morning (10/31/25), in our Friday morning Machshavah Lab series for women, we began our unit on what I call the Prologue to Sefer Iyov (1:1 - 3:1). The initial plan was to have a brief introduction, then read and translate the entire Prologue, then analyze 1:1-5. Instead, our intro led to a rant (on my part) about the Rambam's 13 ikkarim, as misunderstood by anti-Maimonideans and hyper-Maimonideans alike. I thought it was a productive discussion (many thanks to Rabbi Dr. Joshua Berman), but as a result, only managed to read and raise questions on Iyov 1:1-5. Next time (בג"ה) we'll analyze that passage then continue with the Prologue.-----מקורות:איוב א:א-הRabbi Dr. Joshua Berman, "Ani Maamin" (pp.191-195)רמב"ם - פירוש המשניות: סנהדרין, הקדמה לפרק חלק-----The Torah content for the remainder of October is sponsored by Yael Weiss in honor of her parents, and in celebration of her father's birthday (September 25 / 17 Tishrei). -----If you've gained from what you've learned here, please consider contributing to my Patreon at www.patreon.com/rabbischneeweiss. Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!Length: 2 hours 6 minutesSynopsis: The halachah states: “One who davens must have kavanah during all the berachos, but if one is unable to have kavanah in all of them, one should at least have kavanah in Avos” (Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chayim 101:1). Last year, in my Machshavah Lab tefilah shiurim for women, I gave an eleven-part series aimed at elucidating each word of the berachah of Avos based on the classical meforshim (1/3/25–5/16/25). This morning (10/26/25), as a YBT Sunday shiur, I condensed all eleven parts into a single session. If you're looking for a shiur that will help you cultivate kavanah in every word, this is the one for you! Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!Length: 40 minutesSynopsis: This morning (10/23/25), in lieu of our usual morning Mishlei, we had a Q&A session! We discussed the following three questions: (1) According to the Rambam, if Olam ha'Ba is non-physical, and if our desires only relate to physical enjoyments, how can we desire Olam ha'Ba? (2) What do we mean in the short vidui when we say ti'ta'nu, which some translate as "You have let us go astray"? (3) Should every person strive to attain the "Crown of Torah"? In going over these answers, I also shared my answer to the question of why the Written Torah doesn't mention Olam ha'Ba, as well as an insight I had into Kayin's sin. -----מקורות:רמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות תשובה ח:א,ו-ז; י:א-ברמב"ם - פירוש המשניות: הקדמה לפרק חלקקהלת ג:יט-כאעץ יוסף - וידויתנחומא - נח יטרמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות תלמוד תורה ג:א,ו-----The Torah content for the remainder of October is sponsored by Yael Weiss in honor of her parents, and in celebration of her father's birthday (September 25 / 17 Tishrei). -----If you've gained from what you've learned here, please consider contributing to my Patreon at www.patreon.com/rabbischneeweiss. Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!Length: 1 hour 26 minutesSynopsis: This morning (9/26/25), in our Friday morning Machshavah Lab series for women, we concluded (I think?) the introductory portion of our Iyov shiurim by taking up the question of when and whether Iyov lived. We read through the ten plus opinions in the Gemara, raised questions on what Chazal were trying to do, and then tried to answer them with a speculative theory (since I haven't found any satisfactory answers in the traditional or modern commentaries). We then surveyed the views of three Rishonim on whether Sefer Iyov is an allegory. When we return after the Moadim (בג"ה), we'll begin learning the text itself! -----מקורות:בבא בתרא דף טו עמוד אתלמוד ירושלמי סוטה ה:ורמב"ם - מורה הנבוכים ג:כברלב"ג - הקדמה לאיובאבן עזרא - איוב ב:יאRobert Eisen, The Book of Job in Medieval Jewish Philosophy pp.114-117-----The Torah Content for the month of September is sponsored by Meir Areman in loving memory of his grandmother, Esther Chasha bas Meir Gedalya, who recently passed away on the 25th of Av. As usual, we started with a review of yesterday's findings, adding some points here and there for clarification. We then took another stab at elucidating Metzudas David, and although we gained greater clarity, we still didn't manage to figure him out. We then read a huge paradigm-proposing peirush from the Malbim which we attempted to work out. This led us to review one of my favorite passages in Saadia Gaon's introduction, which in turn, led to a discussion of what Mishlei is doing, how it's doing it, and what "mussar" and "tochachah" are in Malbim's lingo. Sadly, we didn't have time to complete our analysis of the Malbim. If I had to name the subject of Sefer Mishlei, I'd say it's yiras Hashem (as indicated in 1:7), and our pasuk defines yiras Hashem according to Mishlei. In elucidating this, we also defined the levels of yirah below and above Mishlei. The main idea we came up with, reflected in Saadia Gaon, presents one of the best arguments for why we all need to learn Mishlei. We even came up with a second interpretation that provides a nice mechanism for taking what comes at you in life and turning it into a source of insight and benefit. Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!Length: 1 hour 33 minutesSynopsis: This morning (9/12/25), in this year's first Friday morning Machshavah Lab shiur for women, we began our (hopefully) year-long series on Sefer Iyov! I began by recapping my prior experience with Iyov, but to my delight, this turned into a really great discussion about the various challenges of learning the sefer. We then attempted to list all the major questions that ought to asked about the sefer BEFORE learning it. The last half of shiur was spent on the question of authorship: who wrote Iyov, and what does that teach us about the sefer? We didn't quite finish answering that question, so that's where we'll pick up next time before moving on to the question of Iyov's chronology and historicity (or lack thereof). I can already tell this is gonna be a great year of learning!-----מקורות:Robert Eisen, "The Book of Job in Medieval Jewish Philosophy" (2004)בבא בתרא דף יד עמוד בשמות לג:יג-כברכות דף ז עמוד בזרחיה חן - הקדמה לספר איוב-----The Torah Content for the month of September is sponsored by Meir Areman in loving memory of his grandmother, Esther Chasha bas Meir Gedalya, who recently passed away on the 25th of Av. Send me a text!Length: 56 minutesSynopsis: Tonight (9/10/25), in our first Wednesday night Tehilim shiur of the 2025-2026 season, we began Tehilim 95, a.k.a. the first perek in Kabbalas Shabbos. I didn't choose it because of Kabbalas Shabbos (though it's always nice to learn perakim we're already somewhat familiar with), but because I noticed during Kabbalas Shabbos last week how many of the perakim deal with Malchus Hashem (God's Kingship). Since Rosh ha'Shanah is around the corner, I figured this might be a good perek to learn. As usual, our first session was devoted to translating the perek, identifying the "pivot point," then raising all the questions we saw. Next week (בג"ה) we'll attempt to develop a theory before delving into the meforshim.-----מקורות:תהלים צהשמות טו:כב-כז; יז:א-ז-----The Torah Content for the month of September is sponsored by Meir Areman in loving memory of his grandmother, Esther Chasha bas Meir Gedalya, who recently passed away on the 25th of Av. Then we delved into the meforshim, learning a TON of fundamental ideas: from Rabbeinu Yonah, Malbim, Metzudas David, Ralbag, and our NEW friend, Immanuel ha'Romi! Not only was this shiur an excellent sample of what it's like to learn Mishlei, but it also happened to be a great "advertisement" for WHY we all need to learn Mishlei on a regular basis!-----מקורות:משלי טו:לאאבן כספי פירוש שנירבינו יונהרמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות יסודי התורה ד:יגרמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות תלמד תורה ה:גמלבי"םעמנואל הרומימצודת דודרלב"ג-----The Torah Content for the month of September is sponsored by Meir Areman in loving memory of his grandmother, Esther Chasha bas Meir Gedalya, who recently passed away on the 25th of Av. Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!Length of audio: 1 hour 6 minutesSynopsis: This is the recording of the Tishah b'Av shiur I gave at the Island Synagogue on 8/3/25. Two things to note: (1) Unlike most other Tishah b'Av shiurim I've given, I don't think there are any chidushim (novel insights). Instead, I decided to focus on the basics. (2) Towards the beginning of the shiur, we read dthrough the kinnah in Hebrew and English. Unfortunately, the person reading the English was sitting far away, and since I was recording on my phone, I don't know if it's audible. No matter, since I recap the refrain, which is what we focused on.-----Since this week's Torah content hasn't been sponsored, I'll use it as a reminder about where to find my stuff.
