Listen to the first episode of season 13 of Beach Weekly to learn more about changes to campus over the summer, end-of-summer events in Long Beach and the CSULB alumni and faculty who participated in this year's Olympics. The first week back on campus is full of ways to connect with fellow students. Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) is hosting a Back to the Beach Breakfast on Wednesday, Aug. 28 from 10 a.m. to noon at the ASI Beach Kitchen where students are invited to grab a free pancake and meet new people! You can also join ASI at the University Student Union (USU) on Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for Back to the Beach Week which includes free giveaways on the Southwest Terrace and music on the USU North Lawn and South Plaza. The best way to stay updated and involved with upcoming events around campus is by using the Events & Orgs apps within your CSULB Single Sign-On! As always over the summer there were many changes made to facilities and programs here at Long Beach State. To start, our news publication has transformed from the Daily 49er to the Long Beach Current. Read more about the name change by picking up a newspaper from newsstands located around campus. Furthermore, the Film and Electronic Arts department has been renamed to the Department of Cinematic Arts and offers a new curriculum, sound stage and an updated equipment room. Don't forget about the Day 1 Textbook Access program which allows students to pay a flat rate to receive all of their required textbooks as soon as needed. The program is $250 a semester for full-time students and $165 a semester for part-time students. Participation in the program is voluntary and students will have until Sept. 9 to opt out. Starting last Saturday, Aug. 24 a stretch of Pine Avenue from Broadway to Third Street has been closed to traffic and will remain closed for the next two weeks due to the Summer on Pine! street festival. Be mindful of increased foot traffic due to the closure when driving Downtown these next two weeks. Big Bang on the Bay, has been an annual event in Long Beach since 2011 and has brought people together to enjoy their shared Labor Day weekend. The event will be held this Sunday, Sept. 1 in Alamitos Bay at 4:30 p.m. with the fireworks show starting at 8:30 p.m. On July 21, President Joe Biden did not accept the Democratic Party's nomination to run for reelection and instead endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris who accepted the nomination and selected Tim Walz, the Governor of Minnesota, as her running mate. On Wednesday, Aug. 21, two tons of meth disguised as watermelons were uncovered by U.S. Customs and Border Patrol in San Diego. The faux watermelons contained over 1,000 packages of methamphetamine and were worth approximately five million dollars. The 29-year-old driver was taken by the Department of Homeland Security for further investigation. This year there were seven representatives, coaches and players from Long Beach State. Coach LaTanya Sheffield was the head coach for the U.S. women's track and field team and helped the team earn seven gold, five silver and four bronze medals. Coach Gavin Arroyo was the assistant coach to the U.S. men's water polo team and helped them earn a bronze medal. Two alumni, TJ DeFalco and Kyle Ensing, represented the U.S. men's volleyball team and DeFalco took home a bronze medal. Our Women's water polo assistant coach Rachel Fattal competed with the U.S. women's water polo team and alumnae Marilia Mimides and Orsi Hertzka competed for Canada and France respectively. Featuring: Borderlands Brewing, Las Hermanas Project, and Hop Forward Society. Our Women's History Month celebrations continue! In this episode, Heather and Cheyenne are speaking with revolutionary women in the industry. (2:04) First, we're joined by Ayla Kapahi and Savanna Saldate from Borderlands Brewing Company in Tucson, Arizona. Ayla and Savanna started the "Las Hermanas" project, a bi-national all-women collaboration brew. It features one brew day in Arizona and another in Mexico, plus educational workshops for attendees. What's next for Las Hermanas? Could a third country be in the future? (Asking for a Canadian friend!) Listen to learn more. (22:24) Then, Sharon Ruyter and Erin McQuitty stop by from the Hop Forward Society. Their goal is to diversify the Alberta craft beer industry by reducing the barriers that exist. The Hop Forward Society is focused on creating and building opportunities for underrepresented groups within the craft beer industry, and helping develop safe spaces for people to work, gather, and socialize. Sharon and Erin share some of the things they've done and the grants they offer.
Our Women in Power series for Women's History Month rolls on—today's guest is Lesley Jane Seymour, who has been editor-in-chief of four different magazines, something that is just not done. That is legends only stuff right there. I feel extra connected to her because she was editor-in-chief of Marie Claire, the magazine where I now work, from 2001 to 2006. She was also editor-in-chief of Redbook, YM, and More, and before taking on her role as an editor-in-chief worked at Women's Wear Daily, Vogue, and Glamour, so she has certainly cut a wide swath in this industry. Lesley was another icon of magazines who was very much present for what I call the golden age of magazines, and as we'll talk about in the show, I think a cornerstone of her story is resilience. In 2016, Meredith Corporation, which owned More, her last editor-in-chief role, announced it was closing the magazine. Lesley went back to school, receiving a master's degree in sustainability from Columbia. In 2018, she founded Covey Club, an online community for professional women, specifically over 40, that resembled More's demographic. Lesley calls Covey Club “a meeting place for lifelong learners,” and it continues to thrive today. Lesley maintains it's never too late to be all that you want to be, and, in addition to all of her work with Covey Club, she hosts the podcast “Reinvent Yourself”; she has really taken what others might wallow in and has turned this into purpose-driven work. She is also the author of two books, On the Edge: 100 Years of Vogue and I Wish My Parents Understood, and she has appeared on every major television news show you can think of from Today to Good Morning America to Hardball to MSNBC and CNN. I can't wait for you to get to know her. People of all genders have rimmed their eyes with pigment for thousands of years. But as Zahra Hankir explains in her new book on the history of eyeliner, its use goes far beyond aesthetics. Eyeliner has also served as a vehicle for identity, self-expression, empowerment and protest. Bedouin men in the deserts of Arabia have worn it to repel the sun – and attract potential mates. Egyptian Queen Nefertiti's celebrated beauty centered on her perfectly winged lines. In modern-day Iran, women wear eyeliner as a form of resistance against an oppressive regime. Hankir joins us to discuss “Eyeliner: A Cultural History.” Guests: Zahra Hankir, author, "Eyeliner: A Cultural History," and "Our Women on the Ground: Essays by Arab Women Reporting from the Arab World" - Hankir is a Lebanese-British journalist
Would you believe it but the spirit of Halloween, "Tlachtga", joined us from the home of the festival Athboy! In today's episode, we will be discussing the Importance of Women's Health and Well-Being in the Workplace and a very crucial, yet overlooked topic - menopause. Menopause tends to affect women at the peak of their careers. Its symptoms like hot flashes, brain fog, and migraines cause women to silently suffer this "workplace taboo" causing many women to leave the workforce altogether. Our Women in Digital host Christine Stack, Head of HR for Capgemini CIS Americas, sits down with three women to share their personal experiences and offer support, information, and resources to other women: - Jill Angelo who is the CEO and Founder of Gennev, the nation's largest virtual menopause clinic and was named one of Inc.'s 2021 Top Female Founders - Jill Weber who leads Capgemini's Global Partnership Relationship with ServiceNow - Carla Heimbigner who is a Global Partner Leader at ServiceNow and 100% dedicated to Capgemini We hope that this discussion normalizes menopause in the workplace, encourages allies and employers to understand and support those with menopausal symptoms, and empowers women to take control of their health and well-being. The Women in Digital Podcast is led by the Women@Capgemini Employee Resource Group, whose mission is to cultivate and sustain a culture where women can thrive at Capgemini. We provide growth through leadership, excellence, action, and development by empowering women and men to work together to bridge the gender gap. The Women in Digital podcasts will be an informative, enlightening, entertaining and open forum to challenge the norm and embrace women. It will offer a chance to connect with our audience, build valuable connections, and challenge everyday thinking of topics that effect Women. The podcast host will interview both an internal and external stakeholders, asking a few thought-provoking questions to invoke a passionate discussion in each episode.

It's “the jewel in the crown”, “the toughest test in cricket”, and, according to Steve Smith, “bigger than The Ashes”. Yes, Usman Khawaja, The Grade Cricketer and Australia heads to India to commence the final six months in the history of Test cricket - and we're frothing. We cover visas, selections, purity, Ashwin impersonators, big boy breakthroughs and other obscure matters ahead of the first Test in Nagpur, starting Thursday. Elsewhere, the Scorchers once again win the Bucket on Your Bonce League, and deservedly. Cooper Connolly is all jaw and sex, AT does the business, and they're probably good because they ignore much of the guest player gear (with the understandable exception of Faf). But do we need to sell it all to India? This is the question of the Asian Century. Jofra's back and Pez would really like x2 tickets to Lord's on Days 1 and 2. Completely unlikely, but would like to go with Dad. In the context of all causes it is not even remotely important. And yet, here we are. Our Women should win the World Cup and break records - anything else will be deeply concerning. Moreover, they have one game to get themselves a massive WPL contract. All the best, friends. Then we talk about 90s jingles for 10 minutes, before AskTGC wanders through the common state of delusion one engages when returning to the game in an oversize golf shirt. TThis special edition of Stand Up & Speak Up this week is with Debby Montgomery Johnson and her mom, Gwendolyn Kennedy Butz. If you could have your mom's undivided attention for an hour, what would you ask her? What was life like when she was a little girl? Who taught her to cook? Where were the holidays spent and with whom? Who did the dishes? Did your mom REALLY ever talk about life as a young adult? What were her joys and times of sadness? Did she work outside of the home or was she a SAHM? My folks have been married since 1955 and they're fortunately still happy, healthy, and of sound mind. Too many of my friends are realizing they can't ever get that hour with mom back either because she's passed (transitioned beyond the veil) or is living with diminished memories. I wanted to let my mom SHINE and for once in her life be the center of MY attention and she was and I'm so grateful. I encourage you all to ask the questions you've never asked (within reason!) and then LISTEN to the gems that will come out. Our Women of Wisdom (WOW, MOMs upside down!) are aging, as are we, and there is so much to learn. All in all, life goes by too quickly and don't you want to know who was the FAVORITE child!!! Welcome to our two recap episodes of 2022 Euros! Our Women and Pairs episode was full of Mambo Italiano, and celebration that Josefin Taljegård will be going to the Olympics! Really, all you need.In the Pairs event, it was the battle of the top three Russian teams, where we were confused by our overwhelming enthusiasm for Boikova and Kozlovskii's Malagueña, and the general nature of Mishina and Galliamov's Snowstorm program. In the Women's event, we continued to bop our heads along with Ekaterina Ryabova to the second rendition of Mambo Italiano, and prayed that our parents would never compare us to the true grit of Anna Shcherbakova.Timestamps:(00:00) - Intro (01:05) - News(04:30) - PAIRS (05:33) - Rebecca Ghilardi & Filippo Ambrosini (07:43) - Karina Safina & Luka Berulava(10:22) - Aleksandra Boikova & Dmitri Kozlovskii(13:57) - Evgenia Tarasova & Vladimir Morozov(16:27) - Anastasia Mishina & Aleksandr Galliamov(20:31) - WOMEN(20:40) - Josefin Taljegård (23:40) - Eva-Lotta Kiibus(25:18) - Alexia Paganini(27:37) - Viktoriia Safonova(29:54) - Niina Petrokina(32:08) - Anastasia Gubanova(34:23) - Ekaterina Ryabova(36:05) - Ekaterina Kurakova(39:16) - Loena Hendrickx(42:13) - Alexandra Trusova(47:54) - Anna Shcherbakova(50:41) - Kamila Valieva(53:29) - KISS & CRY SEGMENT (54:55) - Outro------------------------------------------------Follow our figure skating podcast on:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lutzgetdownpod/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/lutzgetdownpod And to work with us please contact lutzgetdownpod@gmail.com Logo design by @dezisartvibes on Instagramxx Joce & Clauds

Highlights: "US Women's Soccer Team led by the ultra leftwing activist Megan Repinoe suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of the Swedish team in the opening game of the Tokyo Olympics officially ending their 44-game winning streak." “Our Women's Soccer Team decided instead of showing their patriotism and their gratitude to the nation that gave them this amazing opportunity, they decided to deride and mocked and ridicule our nation instead.”“The IOC or the International Olympic Committee has in fact banned podium protests of both the Tokyo Olympics and Beijing Winter Games after ⅔ of the athletes polled said that they believe it was not appropriate to demonstrate or express political views on the victory podium or field of play or at official ceremonies.”“What the real takeaway from all of this, is the sad fact that the epidemic of wokeness really does destroy someone's gratitude and patriotic appreciation necessary for a nation to thrive.""What the great classical philosopher Alasdair MacIntyre is saying is that without patriotism, without a deep connection to and love for one's own country it's virtually impossible to live a fulfilling moral life."Timestamps: [01:43] US Women Soccer Team failed to score against Sweden in the opening match of Tokyo Olympics [03:32] Why the US Women Soccer Team has a reputation for being resentful and rude SJWs [05:12] The IOC banning podium protest and how it agitates SJWs like Lebron James [06:37] The great classical philosopher, Alasdair MacIntyre's remarks about the virtues of patriotism[08:37] How the major league soccer players in Texas react to fans booing them when they kneeled during the national anthemResources: Ep. 541 Gwen Berry Completely EMBARASSES Herself!!!Ep. 574 SHOCK POLL! אֶבֶן וָאֶבֶן אֵיפָה וְאֵיפָה תּוֹעֲבַת י״י גַּם שְׁנֵיהֶם:This morning (5/27/21 at YBT) we began learning a pasuk which, on the surface, is unnecessary, since the Chumash says the same thing with greater elaboration. We spent some time getting the facts, which turned into a quasi Rambam Bekius shiur, and then we outlined an approach to the pasuk. Our full analysis will have to wait until next week.----------מקורות:משלי כ:יתרגום רס"ג - משלי כ:יתרגום כתובים - משלי כ:ירמב"ם - משנה תורה, ספר נזקים, הלכות גניבה פרק ז ----------If you have questions, comments, or feedback, I would love to hear from you! Tonight (5/26/21 at YBT), in lieu of our Chumash Methodology Shiur, we took a leaf from the playbook of Saadia Gaon by tackling a fundamental question in epistemology: "What are ideas?" This question, with its right and wrong answers, had surfaced numerous times in various discussions over the course of the year, and I kept on telling my talmidim, "You NEED to go through the first chapter of Adler's Ten Philosophical Mistakes!" They asked me if we could go through it together, and we decided to do so tonight. THIS SHIUR ISN'T FOR EVERYONE! It was a lot of reading, a lot of discussion, and - despite having set aside two hours - we had to skip some parts and table some questions in order to finish on time.If this shiur appealed to you, then I highly recommend getting your own copy of Ten Philosophical Mistakes, available on Amazon.----------If you have questions, comments, or feedback, I would love to hear from you! Ellevate Podcast: Conversations With Women Changing the Face of Business
On this week's episode, we are doing another recap of one of our best segments from Mobilize Women Week! Now, more than ever, it's critical to stay educated and engage in community efforts. Our Women and Politics speakers, Aditi Juneja (Counsel at Protect Democracy), Bushra Amiwala (Youngest Muslim Elected Official in the US), Christine Hallquist (CEO of Cross Border; 2018 Vermont Democratic Governor Nominee), and Shaniqua McClendon (Political Director at Crooked Media), discuss the role that gender plays in politics, what inspired our guests to get involved, and what everyone can do to better our communities and be active allies.
In this timely bonus episode of season 3, we interview Zahra Hankir, a Lebanese-British journalist who writes about the intersection of politics, culture, and society in the Middle East and Muslim communities around the world. Her work has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, Vice, BBC News, Al Jazeera English, Businessweek, Roads & Kingdoms, and Literary Hub, among other publications. She was awarded a Jack R. Howard Fellowship in International Journalism to attend the Columbia Journalism School and holds degrees in politics and Middle Eastern studies from the American University of Beirut and the University of Manchester, respectively. She is the editor of the best-selling anthology Our Women on the Ground: Essays by Arab Women Reporting from the Arab World, which was published by Penguin Books in August 2019. How is Beirut rebuilding after the recent devastating explosion? What unique challenges are female journalists experiencing in the Arab World? How are they able to bravely tell local stories that need to be heard? What myths about life in the Middle East need debunking? Can the media be trusted? These questions and more will be explored in this latest powerful and eye-opening episode. The Iridescent Podcast is available on iTunes, Spotify, and Google Play. This is a conversation with Lebanese-British journalist and editor Zahra Hankir. She's the editor of the award-winning, best-selling anthology Our Women on the Ground which features 19 women reporters from the Middle East and North Africa. The book includes essay by Donna Abu-Nasr, Aida Alami, Hannah Allam, Jane Arraf, Lina Attalah, Nada Bakri, Shamael Elnoor, Zaina Erhaim, Asmaa al-Ghoul, Hind Hassan, Eman Helal, Zeina Karam, Roula Khalaf, Nour Malas, Hwaida Saad, Amira Al-Sharif, Heba Shibani, Lina Sinjab, and Natacha Yazbeck. Zahra spoke to me about the formation of this book and how she started following some of these reporters in the context of the 2011 uprisings throughout the region. I also asked her about how women reporters in the region navigate gender-based discrimination to get the stories they want told as well as her reflections on the politics of representation in the Western world.
