My name is Rabbi Matt Schneeweiss. My goal as a Torah educator is not merely to teach my students my OWN hashkafah. Rather, my goal is to equip them with the foundations, the methodological training, and the tools which will enable them to arrive at their OWN understanding of Judaism and cultivate their OWN relationship with Hashem and His Torah. This podcast is devoted to the shiurim I give which are geared specifically towards that end. As such, the range of topics covered here will be diverse. There will be shiurim on Jewish philosophy, Chumash methodology, aggadic midrashim, maybe even some non-Jewish philosophy as well. Merriam-Webster defines "laboratory" as a place providing opportunity for experimentation, observation, or practice in a field of study. I call this podcast "Machshavah Lab" because this is where we will conduct Torah "experiments" by exploring questions, texts, and ideas in an effort to develop our machshavah in a "hands on," exploratory, firsthand manner.

Many people are familiar with R' Akiva's famous statement, "This is a great principle in the Torah." Fewer people are familiar with Ben Azzai's disagreement, and his identification of ANOTHER pasuk as an even GREATER principle. We analyzed this machlokess through the eyes of a little-known commentator: N.H. Wesseley. (2) Anti-Israel activists have engaged in malicious editing of Wikipedia articles to promote their cause. What do we think of this tactic, and should we use it as well? (3) What do I think of Rabbi Zimmer's "World of Midrash" approach? (4) What do I think about the reliability of the Zohar, in terms of theoretical ideas and practical halacha? Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!Length: 1 hour 43 minutesSynopsis: Last night (4/4/25), in our Thursday night women's shiur, we explored a question posed to me by two of my students (shout out to Moshe and Shmarya) about a song found at the end of most Haggadot: “Is there an inherent problem with saying Adir Hu?” The concern is that, on the surface, Adir Hu seems to exemplify the type of excessive adjectival praise condemned by R' Chanina in Berachos 33b. Our session was more of a “Machshavah Lab”-style exploration than a formal shiur: we learned the Gemara, raised a bunch of questions, and then turned to the poskim—with the Rambam leading the minority view, opposed in various ways by the Tur, Beis Yosef, and Shulchan Aruch. We also looked at the Rambam's stricter formulation in the Moreh ha'Nevuchim, noting what seem like major inconsistencies in his position. We concluded with a summary of why, according to everyone except the Rambam in the Moreh, it's halachically permissible to sing Adir Hu. It was a fun adventure that left us with plenty of juicy questions and problems to think about over Pesach and beyond!-----מקורות:אדיר הואברכות דף לג עמוד ברמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר אהבה, הלכות תפילה וברכת כהנים ט:ז; א:א-דטור אורח חיים קיג:טבית יוסף שםשולחן ערוך שםרמב"ם - מורה הנבוכים א:נטרמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר אהבה, הלכות ברכות י:כד-----The Torah content from now until Erev Pesach has been sponsored by Yehudis Korn l'zecher nishmas Moshe ben Yeshayahu Yehuda.-----If you've gained from what you've learned here, please consider contributing to my Patreon at www.patreon.com/rabbischneeweiss. Unlike last year, in which we JUST read the Ralbag, we decided to read and discuss the pesukim this year before learning the toeles. This resulted in a slower pace, but (I hope!) a richer learning experience. Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!Length: 1 hour 52 minutesSynopsis: Thoughts of vengeance have been on the minds of Jews worldwide since October 7th. In less than two weeks, we'll celebrate Purim — a holiday in which vengeance is a dominant theme. We are commanded to emulate Hashem's ways, and He is explicitly described as "vengeful" throughout Tanach. Are we meant to emulate Him in this regard? How does this align with the Torah's halachic and ethical stance on revenge? How does it fit into the Torah's broader philosophy of ethics? In this morning's YBT Sunday shiur (3/2/25), we explore an approach developed by Ibn Kaspi, rooted in the statements of Chazal and the writings of the Rambam. (Goodman)Goldmintz – The Rav on Tefillah: An Anthology of Teachings by Rabbi Joseph B. Send me a text!Length: 1 hour 27 minutesSynopsis: This evening (2/20/25), in lieu of our regularly scheduled Pirkei Avos Shiur for women, we took up the topic that I'm currently writing about for my Friday substack article. We began by asking all the questions we could on this three-word pasuk, and by the end of the shiur, we answered all but one. The shiur itself focused on a highly disturbing minority view (expressed by only 3.5 meforshim) about what the Torah wants us to do to witches. For the shorter version of this, check out my article. Send me a text!Length: 1 hour 37 minutesSynopsis: This morning's YBT Sunday shiur (11/3/24) was a bit different than usual, focusing more on reading and discussing sources than in-depth analysis. This was intentional, since this shiur was intended to be a setup for the REAL shiur. My original goal was to present Sforno's view that the nachash in Gan Eden represents the yetzer ha'ra. However, I realized two preliminary issues needed to be addressed: (a) clarifying Sforno's understanding of the tzelem elohim, and (b) addressing a shiur by my Rosh ha'Yeshiva, Rabbi Chait, who argues that allegorizing the nachash is an illegitimate, heretical, and dangerous approach. In this shiur, I aim to tackle both points, setting the stage (God willing) for Part 2, where we'll explore Sforno's view of the nachash in Gan Eden and the aftermath of the cheit.-----מקורות:Rabbi Israel Chait, "The Snake" (C107-108)אברבנאל - הקדמה לבראשית פרק באבן עזרא - פירוש א' בראשית ג:א; פירוש ב' בראשית ג:כארמב"ם - מורה הנבוכים ב:כט-לספורנו - בראשית א:כו-כז; ב:ז-ט,טוספורנו - אור עמים טד:נ-נא-----This week's Torah content is sponsored by Ayala, who says, "Thank you, Rabbi Schneeweiss, for the countless Torah and life insights you share and, specifically, for making the world of chochmah more accessible through your Mishlei shiurim."-----If you've gained from what you've learned here, please consider contributing to my Patreon at www.patreon.com/rabbischneeweiss. I chose this because I hoped it would shed light on all the book-talk at around this time of year, and if not, then at least it'll be instrumental in teshuvah and avoidance of transgression. Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!Length: 1 hour 16 minutesSynopsis: This Erev Rosh ha'Shanah morning (10/2/24), I gave an incomplete shiur on the phrase "ha'Melech ha'Mishpat" with which we conclude the 11th berachah of the Amidah during the Aseres Ymei Teshuvah. Last year I wrote 3/4ths of an article on this topic - everything but the main idea, which didn't come together in time. This year, I had planned on finishing the article in time to post on Erev RH, but that hasn't happened yet. So I decided to just go through all the sources in shiur in hopes that the idea would emerge. DID the idea emerge? Not quite. But we definitely have a LOT of food for thought, and by sharing the shiur, my hope is that someone will help me to discover the "sweet secret" alluded to by the Ritva as explained by R' Manoach.-----מקורות:ברכות דף יב עמוד ברש"י שםטור אורח חיים קיח:אשו"ת רש"י סימן י"חריטב"א - ראש השנה דף לה עמוד ארמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר אהבה, הלכות תפילה וברכת כהנים ב:יחיד פשוטה שםספר המנוחה שםרמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות יסודי התורה ב:ח-ירמב"ם - מורה הנבוכים ב:ו; ג:נגר' יוחאי מקבילי - הרחבות ועיונים שםאברבנאל - ויקרא כג:כג-כה----------The Torah content from Erev Rosh ha'Shanah through Yom ha'Kippurim has been sponsored by Aliza Feder in appreciation of Rabbi Schneeweiss and his Torah content. Send me a text!Length: 1 hour 31 minutesSynopsis: Tonight (9/26/24), in our Thursday night Pirkei Avos shiur for women, we took up the next mishnah in the fourth chapter, where we left off in June. This one certainly struck us as odd, speaking of Torah almost like a voodoo doll. We raised a ton of questions and successfully learned two approaches from three meforshim (Rashi, Rambam, and Meiri), which answered all our questions. We also attempted to learn Rabbeinu Yonah but couldn't quite resolve it. We didn't get to the Maharal, but if you're learning this on your own, be sure to check him out! This Mishnah ended up being far more practical than it initially seemed, and it was really satisfying to learn! Please feel free to leave your questions, insights, and feedback in the comments! -----מקורות:אבות ד:ורש"ירמב"םרמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות תלמוד תורה ד:ארמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר אהבה, הלכות תפילין ומזוזה וספר תורה י:יאמאירירבינו יונה-----The Torah content for the first month of the new school year has been sponsored by the Brevique BrewLid. This is a good example of how, if you keep asking questions even when you think you've reached the end of the line, you'll sometimes break through to a new vista with new discoveries waiting to be made. I set out to give a shiur on the parashah which includes some methodology for understanding mitzvos, but we ended with an enhanced appreciation of this particular mitzvah and its place in the system.----------מקורות:רמב"ם - ספר המצוות: עשה חמשנה תורה: הקדמה, מנין המצוות, עשה חרמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות דעות א:הר' אברהם בן הרמב"ם - שו"ת סגיד פשוטה - הלכות דעות א:אנצי"ב - דברים כח:ט-----The Torah content for the first month of the new school year has been sponsored by the Brevique BrewLid.
