Self help books have exploded over the past 10 years, and there are so many to pick from. How do you find one that works for you, without it just being another book that sits on a shelf collecting dust? First you have to pin-point what area of your life are looking to improve... your health, mental well-being, money mindset, or dating & relationships. It's important to remember too, that a self-help book can only take you so far. Once you finish reading it, it's up to you to integrate that new knowledge and apply it to your life. New Year's Resolutions sound nice, but a lot of people break them. With the start of a new year comes the feeling of a beginning, like we all have a fresh new start. When it comes to setting a resolution, most of us feel the pressure to change something we feel insecure about, like getting abs or loosing 10 pounds. Or we start off strong, and a month later we fall off track. Most people break their resolutions sooner than you think! Listen to hear how long the average person lasts. For years I swore to myself, "This is going to be the year I loose weight or give up sugar," but then I would break my resolution, have tons of guilt, & the year would go by & all the motivation I had back in January would be gone. Now I have a different approach to New Years & it's brought me so much happiness & growth. In this episode I share: Why most people break their New Year's ResolutionsHow long most people stay on track with their resolutionsThe negative impact media puts on us to "get skinny" & "loose weight"Why I stopped setting New Year's ResolutionsNew Year Intentions > New Year ResolutionsHow to avoid feeling guilty if you drop your new year intention/goalTips to stay on track with your intention/goalMy 1st Polar Plunge & why it was so powerful What are your intentions for the new year? How to be alone, but not lonely at the same time is a practice. Believe it or not, there's a way to be alone without feeling bad about it or sorry for yourself. Oftentimes we get trapped in this belief that the time in our life when we're single is never going to be as enjoyable as the time when we're in a relationship. I used to treat my aloneness like a pity party, and all I did was find myself either super unhappy or dating guys that didn't treat me right. After some time and experiences that pushed me out of my comfort zone, I was able to find joy with being on my own. In this episode I share: What to do when the loneliness hitsHow to enjoy your time aloneThings I did to get confident in going places aloneSolo-Travel & how it changed my lifeeeeeeThe TRAP OF DESPERATION when datingThe importance of self-connection If you enjoyed this episode, share with me on Instagram @emilysiero & tag me in a screenshot of you listening. Being an artist takes true practice and creating the space for creativity is what allows it to grow and evolve. I think we all have an inner artist. Some of us might not want to make a career out of it, but no matter what level you want to take your creativity to, it's important to tap into it daily. For a long time I felt embarrassed about my artistic side, but all that did was keep me from wanting to engage with my craft. And an artist that doesn't practice their craft is living in some delusional fantasy land. The first step at deciding you're an artist is giving yourself permission to believe it fully. If you're an artist or not, this topic is important for everyone, because we all have a part of ourselves that wants to be expressive. In this episode I share: Reasons why artists hide from their talentsThe power of giving yourself permissionThe book The Artist's Way that's helped me evolve so much!Practices that nurture your inner artistWhy taking care of yourself is important for you & your art I think artists need to join together and talk about their unique process' of navigating this world, because it is NOT set up to support the artistic journey. I can't recommend The Artist's Way enough by Julia Cameron. You can buy it on Amazon HERE (I am apart of Amazon Associates, so appreciate the humble kickback if you buy it), and it's a great tool to not only help you get a grip on your career as an artist, but a wonderful resource you can revisit again and again. Maybe you just moved back with your parents, or you've been a veteran resident for a while, where ever you find yourself at, I see you and I'm here for you. Living at home has become a norm for us millennials, but let's be real... it's not ideal. And people always have their opinion about it. Whether they give you sympathy, pity, or judgement, they're always going to look at your situation through their perspective (don't forget that). It also doesn't help comparing yourself to everyone else your age who owns a home, has a partner, and lives the life you want... a life of peace and quiet, without a parent interrupting it. I know you might not be where you thought you'd be in your life right now, but it's ok. You'll get there. Trust why you moved back home in the first place, and know that it's only temporary. Take it from someone who just "celebrated" her 5 year anniversary of living at home. You will get through it & you can make the most of it, no matter how annoyed or frustrated it makes you sometimes. In this episode I share: Finding the benefits of living at homeWhy I moved back home & what it's taught meFunny moments about living at home lifeWays to stay motivated towards moving outHow to set a game-plan for this temporary time I mentioned more about why I moved back home in Episode 2 "Finding Beauty in a Breakup", listen to that here. I referenced one of my fave bands ever, Dirty Heads & their song "Know That I". Listen to it, especially for those lyrics mentioned, "pressure makes diamonds". The secret to success is envisioning the future you want to have. This week's episode features local CT hip-hop artist, La Tesce. We first connected at an open-mic in the summer of 2019 at a local venue & I was so inspired by her music and stage presence. She's such a go-getter and this interview will motivate you to step up your game in whatever side-hustle or creative pursuit you're working on. As a female hip-hop artist, La Tesce shares what it's like to be in a male-dominated field, the pressures men put on women to play up their sexuality because "sex sells", and how she stays aligned with her authentic voice. Her mindset is going to inspire you to always speak your truth and how important it is for artists to not let outside voices overpower their own. With the release of "Wap" this summer, we have seen how even though it's 2020, people still have a problem with women expressing their sexuality. We joke about how everyone secretly loves the song, and what female artists La Tesce draws inspiration from. In this episode she shares: Ways she holds herself accountable as an artistHow she's been nourishing her creativity during COVIDThe importance of surrounding yourself with people that work harder than youHer songwriting processWhat it's like being a female rapper How she stays focused on her vision & career Listen to La Tesce on Spotify, subscribe on Youtube, and follow her on Instagram for more updates! Some of my favorite songs of her's are Culture, Warning, and Late Night. It's impossible to NOT dance to her music! With the tragic killing of George Floyd, we have witnessed how much racism has shaped America and how crucial it is to continue fighting racism. It exists in a multitude of our country's systems and institutions, and especially in white suburbia. Growing up in Glastonbury, CT, a predominately white town, I always wondered why we only had a handful of Black students in school. And after going through a white-washed school system, it wasn't until leaving high-school and going to college in New York City that I realized how cookie-cutter and privileged my hometown and high-school experience really was. This week I had the honor of interviewing Kennedy Williams, a Glastonbury High School alum, who is a founder of Black in Glastonbury, a Black Lives Matter group focused on brining inclusivity & change to white suburbia. Kennedy opens up about her experience growing up in a town that's 87% white and in this episode we discuss: Inspiration for starting Black in GlastonburyBeing the only Black student in classTypes of racism she experienced from students and teachersHistory lessons we weren't taught in schoolThe power of collaborationCreating effective change If you enjoyed this episode, share with me on Instagram @emilysiero & tag me in a screenshot of you listening. Please share this episode with someone you know and let's continue to learn how we can do our part to help fight against racism and create equality for all.
Being in your 20's is such an exciting time. It's when we really get to discover who we really are and decide how we want to navigate the world post-college or high-school. As we grow out of this era of our lives, it's easy to look at all of the mistakes you made and the regrets you still hold onto. But, don't forget how important it is to look at the lessons you learned along the way, and how they can help shape your future to be even better. Now that I'm towards the end of my twenties, (28 came here real quick wtf), I'm realizing that there are some things you just have to leave behind in your twenties. Whether it be beliefs you picked up as kid/teenager or patterns & bad habits you don't want to continue with, now is the perfect time to think about what changes you want to make in your life going forward. I used to think it was permanent and I was stuck in this awful place forever. However, there is a solution if you're willing to be brutally honest with yourself about what's bursting your passion bubble. It might not be the easiest thing to admit to at first, or the easiest thing to change, but with a little effort you'll start feeling connected & motivated. In this episode I discuss: What it feels like to be uninspired & disconnected from yourselfFactors that are draining your passionMotivation to leave the job you hatePractices & Tips to help re-ignite your passion The times in my life where I've been working at job, just to have a paycheck, have caused me the most suffering. I always stay there for way too long, and it puts me in a pattern of resenting work, even when I wasn't there! Which was causing me to feel exhausted & drained all the time, and this kept me from wanting to find other jobs or work on my own projects. I believe for most of us, a job we're not crazy about is the root cause of our unhappiness. We spend a majority of our week working, and if you hate your job, think about how much time and energy you're giving away to something you resent. I hope this discussion inspires you to make in a change in your life and to rediscover your passions. Share it with someone you know that could use some help on this topic!
