What if the very thing that gives your life meaning is also what's burning you out? That's the paradox. Leah Weiss found herself in teaching compassionate leadership at Stanford. Last week, world-class athlete Simone Biles stood up to failed-athlete-turned-crybully Riley Gaines when Riley antagonized a transgender child to her 1.5 million Twitter followers. A harassment campaign, which has become a standard (and winning!) online strategy for online right, ensued against Simone. The comments flooded in, eviscerating the gymnast (and her sponsors) — “So you want my daughter to compete against boys?” “How many medals would YOU have if you competed against MEN?” And perhaps most jarring, “I guess you want other little girls to get abused the way you did.” Things flew off the handle and became severely detached from reality, as they so often do in these campaigns. Facing endless harassment, Simone apologized, and Riley has been taking a Fox News victory lap ever since. Today, Natalie Wynn (a.k.a. Contrapoints) returns to the show as we explore the anatomy of a moral panic, the harassment campaigns which fuel them, and why you cannot compromise with a fascist. When we quit drinking, it's pretty common to pick up another crutch or transfer the addiction to something else like food, work, cannabis, shopping, etc. Your brain still wants comfort, relief, stimulation, and escape and it's easy to use other methods of relief instead of doing the emotional work and not needing relief. In this episode, I discuss the desire to replace alcohol with something else, how we do this in unhealthy ways, and what healthy reward substitution looks like. Proverbs 16:16 says, “How much better to get wisdom than gold! To get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver.”In a world that chases wealth as the ultimate goal, Scripture calls us to something better—wisdom. Because without godly wisdom, even abundance can lead us astray. Today, Jim Newheiser joins us to explore why wisdom, not money, is the true measure of success in God's economy. Dr. James (Jim) Newheiser, Jr., is the Director of the Christian Counseling Program and Professor of Christian Counseling and Pastoral Theology at RTS Charlotte. He is also the author of several books on the subject of counseling, as well as Money: Seeking God's Wisdom (31-Day Devotionals for Life).Investing in What SatisfiesIsaiah 55:2 details an account where the Lord asks, “Why do you spend money for what is not bread, and your wages for what does not satisfy?” It's a poignant reminder that many of us chase things that leave us empty. How we spend our time and money reflects what we value. Yet so often, those values are shaped by a world that overpromises and underdelivers.Instead of finding fulfillment in wealth, ultimate satisfaction comes from our relationship with God and the good gifts He provides. Time spent in Scripture, prayer, and worship is far more nourishing than any financial gain. Even the principle of rest in Scripture is God's reminder that we don't need to fill every waking moment with striving.Wisdom or Wealth? A Tale of Two WomenThe book of Proverbs is interesting because in this compilation in Scripture, wisdom is personified as a noble woman worth pursuing, while folly appears as a seductive but destructive adulteress. Proverbs sets up a contrast because Lady Wisdom is like the soul's true bride. She brings joy and delight. But Madame Folly, who represents false promises like the pursuit of money for its own sake, is spiritual adultery, and she leads to misery. The point is clear: what we pursue will shape us. Chase wisdom, and you'll find joy and lasting purpose. Chase wealth, and you may find yourself grasping at the wind.Applying Wisdom in Daily LifeHow do we actually live out this pursuit of wisdom over wealth? For someone who's not used to reading Scripture regularly, it can start with just two pages a day or with a chapter of Proverbs a day. Ask God to speak to you through it.God has promised something far better than material wealth—His presence, His wisdom, and His joy. There's such a huge connection between our hearts and our money, and God is ultimately after our hearts. If you're ready to go deeper in your walk with God by rethinking your financial life through the lens of biblical wisdom, Wisdom Over Wealth is a great place to start. This new 12-lesson study from FaithFi, based on Ecclesiastes, unpacks how true joy isn't found in accumulation but in reverence, surrender, and trust. You can receive a copy of Wisdom Over Wealth when you become a FaithFi Partner. It's a small amount. As I'm 76, I'm required to set aside a certain amount each year. I would like to give this to my son now so that those amounts can stay in the account and start accruing interest. Can I do that?We have a credit card balance of $15,000 with an interest rate of 11%. We try to pay $2,000 a month, but the balance keeps increasing. Part of the reason is that our 29-year-old daughter, who lives and works in London, has a card on our account. In episode 204, Coffey talks with Rosalind Chow about the distinct roles of mentorship and sponsorship in advancing careers and building more inclusive workplaces. They discuss the distinction between mentorship (which helps grow the mentee) and sponsorship (which seeks to change how others see the protege); how sponsorship functions like marketing or PR campaigns for high-potential employees; the four types of sponsorship - creating, confirming, preventing, and protecting; why sponsors risk their own credibility and reputation when advocating for others; how sponsorship doesn't require formal hierarchical relationships but depends on trust and status; how to become more "sponsorable" by being a top performer with clear values and compelling personal story; the risks of having the wrong sponsor or appearing as the "teacher's pet"; and how sponsorship creates inclusion by ensuring high performers are seen, valued, and given opportunities regardless of their background or circumstances. About our Guest: Rosalind Chow is an Associate Professor of Organizational Behavior and Theory at Carnegie Mellon University, where she studies the power of social hierarchy and its impact on diversity and inclusion efforts within organizations. Her forthcoming book, The Doors You Can Open (PublicAffairs, April 8, 2025) distinguishes the concept of sponsorship from mentorship. While mentorship can change mentees for the better through valuable coaching and encouragement, sponsorship takes it one step further — sponsors can change the social environment around their proteges by actively advocating for, raising the social visibility of, and protecting them. Put simply, while mentors act on mentees, sponsors act on external observers – audiences - to change how they see proteges. We don't just have the ability to change other people; we also have the ability to change other people's relationships with one another. This ability - the power we have as sponsors - is something we can leverage to better ourselves, other people, and our communities. Rosalind Chow can be reached athttp://www.rosalindchow.com/https://www.linkedin.com/in/rosalind-chow-6b25541b0/ About Mike Coffey: Mike Coffey is an entrepreneur, licensed private investigator, business strategist, HR consultant, and registered yoga teacher. In 1999, he founded Imperative, a background investigations and due diligence firm helping risk-averse clients make well-informed decisions about the people they involve in their business.Imperative delivers in-depth employment background investigations, know-your-customer and anti-money laundering compliance, and due diligence investigations to more than 300 risk-averse corporate clients across the US, and, through its PFC Caregiver & Household Screening brand, many more private estates, family offices, and personal service agencies.Imperative has been named a Best Places to Work, the Texas Association of Business' small business of the year, and is accredited by the Professional Background Screening Association. Distinguish between mentorship (developing the individual) and sponsorship (changing others' perceptions of the individual) to provide appropriate support for high-potential employees.2. Practice the four types of sponsorship - creating visibility, confirming positive impressions, preventing negative associations, and protecting during criticism - to advance deserving talent.3. Recognize that effective sponsorship requires risking your own credibility and reputation, making it essential to sponsor only high performers whose values align with your own and the organization's goals.

Baal HaSulam. Shamati, 6. What Is Support in the Torah, in the Work?
When we talk about creativity, we mean artists of course. But we also actually mean entrepreneurs—whose creativity is as important to what they do as anything else. So thinking about creativity, what does Christianity have to say to it? The answer is a lot. Your deeper beliefs about the meaning of life and the world actually does shape your work. The Bible says the world was created, has fallen, is being redeemed, and is going to be restored. How does that affect or shape our creativity? The Christian understanding of creativity is that creativity is something you do 1) because you want to, 2) out of love, 3) in full knowledge of the risk and the cost, and 4) knowing that there will be satisfaction. This talk and Q&A was given by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on April 16, 2010. Series: Center for Faith and Work. In this raw and revealing coaching session, Christine Hassler coaches Bridget, a woman navigating the painful territory of jealousy, comparison, and unmet desires. Bridget candidly opens up about her long-standing struggles with being single and childless—two areas that trigger deep feelings of not being “good enough” when she sees others with what she longs for. The coaching session explores not only the emotional roots of these feelings but also how deeply ingrained patterns from childhood can skew how we view ourselves in relation to others. Christine guides Bridget to understand that jealousy isn't a flaw—it's a signal. A signal that we may be projecting our own unlived qualities onto others, which can be used for self-discovery and healing when viewed with compassion. Through tools like “positive projection” and reparenting, Christine helps Bridget shift her lens from lack and comparison to abundance and self-trust. This episode is essential listening for anyone who finds themselves stuck in comparison loops, struggling with envy, or feeling left behind by life's timelines. If you've ever looked at someone else's life and thought, “They must know something I don't,” this one is for you. Consider/Ask Yourself: Do you often compare your life to others and feel like you're falling short? Do you feel left out or behind when it comes to relationships, family, or success? Is jealousy something you were taught—something modeled in your family of origin? Are you ready to reclaim your sense of self-worth and step into greater self-trust? Key Insights and A-HAs: Jealousy can serve as a tool for growth when reframed as a positive projection. Often, the qualities we admire in others are ones we haven't fully owned in ourselves. Chronic comparison stems from childhood imprints, often passed down from caregivers. Confidence in decision-making strengthens our relationship with ourselves and builds autonomy. You are not less than anyone else—there is no secret formula that others have and you don't. How to Get Over It & On With It: Practice positive projection: When you're jealous of someone, ask yourself, “What qualities am I seeing in them that I haven't yet recognized in myself?” Build self-trust by making confident, embodied choices—even small ones. Flex your decision-making muscle. Reframe comparison as separation. Instead, use it to connect with the qualities you desire to cultivate in yourself. Visualize removing the “comparison glasses” and choosing to see through the lens of truth, where your worth is not tied to others' outcomes. Work with a therapist or coach to reparent the younger parts of you that never got to fully develop autonomy or self-approval. Missionary Amy Carmichael once expressed a powerful truth: “You can give without loving, but you cannot love without giving.”That quote reminds us that generosity isn't just something we do—it reflects who we are in Christ. So, how do we grow into more joyful, intentional givers? Today, we'll talk with Ron Blue about what he calls “living giving”— and how that mindset can bring real financial freedom.Ron Blue is the Co-Founder of Kingdom Advisors and the author of many books on biblical finance, most notably Master Your Money: A Step-by-Step Plan for Experiencing Financial Contentment.Giving Is a Spiritual DecisionGiving reflects our trust in God. When we give—and give first—we're saying, “Lord, You gave this to me, and I'm returning to You what's already Yours. I trust You to meet my needs.”It's a profound shift in perspective. Instead of centering our financial lives on ourselves, giving reorients our hearts toward God's purposes. It stretches our faith and loosens money's grip on our hearts. It doesn't shrink your life—it expands it.Ron Blue classically says, “Do your giving while you're living so you're knowing where it's going.” That's more than a catchy phrase. It's a philosophy rooted in joy. Too many people wait until death to make significant gifts, missing the delight of seeing God work through their generosity in real time. There's something deeply joyful about watching God use what you've given. It's not just about writing a will—it's about living with open hands.True Financial Freedom Starts With Open HandsThink of your money like a closed fist or an open hand. When your fist is closed, you're trying to control or keep what you think is yours. But when you open your hand, you're saying to God, “This is Yours. Use it as You will.”That's what true financial freedom looks like—not merely having enough, but being free from money's control altogether. God doesn't need our money, He wants our hearts. And He knows that money is one of the greatest competitors for our love.As you reflect on your own financial life, maybe it's time to stop asking, “How much do I have to give?” And start asking, “How can I use what I've been given to glorify God—right now?”You can find Ron's book Master Your Money: A Step-by-Step Plan for Experiencing Financial Contentment wherever books are sold.On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I use a donor-advised fund for charitable contributions and would like to contribute to a mission trip that my church is organizing. I'm wondering if it's legal from an IRS standpoint to contribute directly to an individual going on a mission trip, or do I give it to the mission fund?I'm paying off a credit card after my mom's death, which costs me $320 a month. I have two options: continue with my current plan or have my wife assist me in paying it off. I wanted to get advice on which approach would be the best to help pay it off.I sell items on eBay, and I'm confused about my tax reporting. When preparing my 2024 taxes, eBay flagged me about my 1099-K, stating that I didn't make enough to require the form. Do I need to add this to my Social Security? As I look online, I've just gotten more confused about different reporting requirements.I'm taking an early retirement, and I understand that I can only earn $24,300 before it impacts my Social Security. It looks like I'm going to go over that amount by just a bit. Do they tax anything over the $24,300, or do they tax the whole amount?Resources Mentioned:Faithful Steward: FaithFi's New Quarterly Magazine (Become a FaithFi Partner)Master Your Money: A Step-by-Step Plan for Experiencing Financial Contentment by Ron BlueChristian Credit CounselorsWisdom Over Wealth: 12 Lessons from Ecclesiastes on Money (Pre-Order)Look At The Sparrows: A 21-Day Devotional on Financial Fear and AnxietyRich Toward God: A Study on the Parable of the Rich FoolFind a Certified Kingdom Advisor (CKA) or Certified Christian Financial Counselor (CertCFC)FaithFi App Remember, you can call in to ask your questions most days at (800) 525-7000. Most organizations claim to care about employee development, but upon closer examination, their approach to skills is often vague, subjective, or downright confusing. They might assume people will simply "figure it out" on the job or resort to one-size-fits-all training. If you've ever wondered why your learning investments don't seem to translate into impact, it might be because you're still guessing when it comes to skills.Today, you'll hear how Johnson & Johnson's tech organization stopped playing the guessing game. With clear processes to identify, assess, and verify skills, both digital and power skills, they're not just hoping development happens; they're engineering it. You'll learn how they use both talent leader insight and AI-driven inference to build a skills-based ecosystem that actually works, without overwhelming employees or managers.By the end of the conversation, it's clear this isn't about chasing trends. It's about building a practical, scalable system that aligns employee growth with business needs and helps people know, with confidence, exactly what's next in their development journey. In today's episode, I'm joined by Josh Patten, a seasoned leader with a diverse background, including a long tenure at Aetna and a deep experience in crisis leadership. We dive into the tension that many leaders face—the difference between leading authentically and being influenced by external expectations. Josh shares his struggles with leadership, the pressure to perform, and how he's navigating the gap between his core values and the demands of his role. The Tension of LeadershipJosh opens up about the struggles of leadership, particularly in high-pressure situations like layoffs and turnarounds. As someone who's often been in a crisis leadership role, Josh reflects on how he's consistently been able to lead others, but in doing so, he has lost track of leading himself. His candidness about feeling disconnected from his values provides a real, relatable moment for anyone in a leadership role who's ever felt the weight of leading others at the cost of themselves. The Disconnect Between Who We Are and What We DoJosh talks about the disconnect he feels between his core self—someone who thrives in vision, creativity, and inspiration—and the daily demands of his leadership position. Even though Josh is where he wanted to be five years ago, he finds himself exhausted and unfulfilled because of the gap between who he is and what he does every day. This reflects a struggle that many leaders face—being stuck in a position where they're thriving externally but feeling drained and unfulfilled internally.Struggling with the Need for MoreEven though Josh acknowledges the successes he's achieved, he constantly wrestles with the idea of wanting more. More impact. More growth. More engagement. He talks about the tension between feeling content with what he has and recognizing there is more he could do. This conflict of always striving for more while trying to appreciate the present moment is something that many leaders struggle with.Leadership and Personal GrowthJosh shares an important lesson: leadership isn't just about managing systems and teams—it's about knowing who you are and where you want to go. Being clear on your values and communicating those values to your team is essential for authentic leadership. Josh's personal story illustrates how his self-awareness and emotional intelligence have guided his journey, but also how challenging it can be to lead from a place of authenticity when there's external pressure to conform. The Struggle to Stay True to YourselfAs Josh reflects on the personal and professional tensions in his life, he shares that part of his struggle comes from wanting to be both a high-energy visionary and a calm, centred leader. This duality often leaves him feeling inadequate, as he tries to fit himself into roles that he believes others need him to fill. However, Josh ultimately realises that the key to overcoming this tension is not trying to change who he is, but to embrace his true self and lead authentically, even when it feels uncomfortable. The Importance of Healthy ConflictThroughout the conversation, Josh emphasises the importance of healthy conflict and being willing to rock the boat. He shares that his most effective leadership moments come when he leans into his natural ability to challenge the status quo. However, he also realises that, in corporate settings, this kind of leadership is often misunderstood as combative. The key takeaway here is that healthy conflict, when done with clarity and respect, can drive clarity and success within a team.Leading from Your Own ValuesIn the end, Josh and I reflect on how the best leaders are those who know their own values and are unafraid to lead from that place of authenticity. Josh's journey serves as a reminder that leaders need to focus not just on their external accomplishments, but also on how they show up authentically, making decisions aligned with their core values. Leadership isn't about being someone else—it's about owning who you are and leading others to do the same.Challenge for LeadersJosh's story is a powerful reminder for leaders to ask themselves: Am I leading authentically, or am I trying to fit into someone else's mould of what leadership should look like? Leaders must lean into their own strengths and values and trust that doing so will help create the type of leadership that attracts the right people and creates lasting impact.Resources Mentioned:Follow Josh on Instagram: @JoshPattenCoachJoin my free Leadership Training: Join me for a leadership session this month. What would happen if you stopped pursuing a career destination and focused instead on the best direction? Too often, we find ourselves checking the “right” boxes to get the best degree and climb the corporate ladder, only to find ourselves unfulfilled as we near the top. There's something wrong with that picture.Megan Hellerer, the author of “Directional Living: A Transformational Guide to Fulfillment in Work and Life,” joins me to talk about the approach she has adopted and the one she now teaches. Directional living is about recognizing that human beings change over time. It's about eschewing a Final Destination and the resulting roadmap and instead focusing on what aligns with our lives and goals as we go through life.Embrace Megan's individualized approach to constructing a fulfilling life and career:Why the American Dream just isn't serving us anymore; Why we can't define fulfillment by society's limiting perception of success; How recalibrating your inner thermostat can help you start living directionally; Why the idea of “failure” is overrated and what to focus on instead.Related Links:Buy “Directional Living: A Transformational Guide to Fulfillment in Work and Life” by Megan Hellerer - https://meganhellerer.com/directional-living-bookLearn more about Megan's coaching - https://meganhellerer.com/work-with-meConnect with Megan on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/meganhellerer/LEVEL UP: a Leadership Accelerator for Women on the Rise - https://www.bossedup.org/levelupBossed Up Courage Community - https://www.facebook.com/groups/927776673968737/Bossed Up LinkedIn Group - https://www.linkedin.com/groups/7071888/

How can practicing the law be shaped by the Christian faith? And how can we reimagine lawyering? If you're reimagining the legal profession, you don't want to just be a Christian who happens to also be a lawyer. You want the way you practice the law to be shaped by your faith. For this reimagining, we need to understand three things from Christian theology: 1) that every human being is called to be a gardener, 2) that the law is a form of gardening, and 3) that you need to figure out your own idols.
