In this episode, we chat with human rights advocate, singer, storyteller, and University of Minnesota-Twin Cities American Studies doctoral student Wakinyan LaPointe. Wakinyan, a Sicangu (Burnt Thigh) Lakota citizen of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, focuses his studies on Indigenous rights, human rights, and youth organizing. He describes how his work with Indigenous young people, Indigenous people across the globe, and water scholars has informed his understanding of how to generate a sustainable future. One strategy he shares is the deepening of Indigenous youth's relationship with their ancestral waterways, which has shown to improve water and land health. For Wakinyan, having his parents share stories and cultural traditions with him during his childhood – spent in Washington, California, and the Rosebud reservation before landing in Minneapolis – was foundational to his understanding of self and the world. Today, Wakinyan uses these teachings and those embedded within the songs he sings to reclaim his time from the “weeds of academia” and establish a healthy grounding to his days.  Tune in for an engaging conversation with one of today's most vibrant, Indigenous artist scholars!

Send us a textIn today's episode, we're tackling an essential but often-overlooked question: Does your spouse truly feel valued by you?Episode HighlightsThe Power of One Question: Why asking “Do they feel valued?” can radically shift the dynamics in your relationship.Simple Ways to Show Value: Practical ideas for expressing appreciation, from daily affirmations to thoughtful gestures that keep the spark alive.Building Emotional Connection: How making your spouse feel valued deepens trust and keeps the relationship strong, even through challenges. Why This MattersFeeling valued is more than just words—it's about action, intention, and consistency. When your spouse feels genuinely valued, you create a safe space where both of you can thrive and connect on a deeper level.Common Objection“I already do a lot for my spouse—why should I have to do even more?”It's understandable to feel this way, especially if you feel like you're already putting in the effort. But remember, this isn't about adding more to your plate; it's about focusing on small, intentional actions that really communicate appreciation. Think of it as investing in your relationship's foundation—it strengthens the connection and helps prevent resentment from building up over time.FAQQ: “How do I know if my spouse feels valued?”A: Great question! Signs that your spouse feels valued include open, warm communication, willingness to spend time together, and feeling comfortable sharing their needs and dreams with you. If they're pulling back, it could be a signal that they're feeling overlooked. A simple way to gauge this? Ask them! Sometimes, all it takes is an open, honest question like, “What makes you feel most appreciated in our relationship?”Tune In To Learn:How to identify and understand what “feeling valued” means to your spousePractical steps to integrate this awareness into everyday lifeWays to ask your spouse what makes them feel valued without it feeling forced or awkwardDon't miss this episode if you're ready to take that one powerful step toward a happier, more fulfilling marriage!Listen now to start the transformation. Following his Sept. 29 investiture, Michigan State University President Kevin M. Guskiewicz, Ph.D., announced one of his first initiatives was to bring “MSU to Michigan,” and he did so by leading MSU's inaugural Spartan Bus Tour. We set out from campus Monday morning October 21 from Kellogg Center. (0:20) - President Guskiewicz opens the tour. (1:14) - Our first stop was in Mount Pleasant to visit the Ziibiwing Center of Anishinabe Culture and Lifeways. Eric Rodriguez is interim public relations director for the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe. (4:20) - The next stop on the tour was in Le Roy to visit M&R Pickling, an Amish-owned canning company founded in 2013. The company is a client of the MSU Product Center, which supports innovation and growth for those in food, agriculture and natural resource sectors. Then it was on to a stop at the Camp Grayling Joint Maneuver Training Center, the largest National Guard training facility in the United States and the main training facility for the Michigan National Guard. At the stop, we met Michigan native Colonel Lucas J. Lanczy, the current commander of JMTC and got a brief welcome and history of the site to learn about the center's economic and environmental impact in the region.  (6:15) - We remained in Grayling for our next stop at a somewhat hidden MSU jewel, Camp Wa Wa Sum. Brandon Baswell is service manager with IPF Real Estate. (8:13) - As we headed to Traverse City to spend the night, President G, as we affectionately called our leader on the tour, reflected on Day 1. (11:40) - Day 2 of the tour began in Traverse City at the Northwest Michigan Horticulture Research Center. The 137-acre Center was founded in 1979 by the area's fruit growers who wanted a research center of their own — a place that could help with unique issues that come with growing fruit in a region unlike any other — so they turned to MSU. Nikki Rothwell is an MSU extension specialist and coordinator of the center. (16:02) - After a group walk up part of the Sleepng Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in Glen Arbor, we enjoyed lunch at Arcadia Bluffs Golf Club, a nationally renowned golf destination located on the shores of Lake Michigan, offering two championship golf courses. Founded in 1999, the golf club is built on the bluffs above the shore of Lake Michigan.  Arcadia Bluffs is routinely rated a top 50 course in the country. We heard a presentation from club representatives and alumni who graduated from MSU's top turfgrass management program. Then it was on to Ludington State Park, a public recreation area located two miles north of Ludington, occupying 5,300 acres between the shores of Lake Michigan and Hamlin Lake. Ethan Theuerkauf, an MSU assistant professor and coastal geomorphologist described his research that focuses on how and why coastal landscapes, such as beaches, barrier islands and wetlands change over time.  As we boarded the bus in Ludington on our way to the Martinez Farm in Conklin, we learned more about MSU Migrant Student Services. Day 2 of the tour ended with an evening reception at the Muskegon Museum of Art. Teresa Dunn, a Mexican American artist and MSU professor who has artwork on view in the museum joined the group and talked about her art. (19:25) - Day 3 of the tour began with a stop at Muskegon High School to learn about current and future pre-college programs in teaching and osteopathic medicine.  (23:24) - Next was a stop in Rockford to view PFAS remediation sites. MSU's Center for PFAS Research, formed in 2020, is an interdisciplinary center that leads agricultural and natural resource PFAS research in Michigan and works with communities to create remediation strategies.  (26:08) - Next, the Spartan Bus Tour headed to MSU's Grand Rapids Innovation Park that anchors the “Medical Mile” in Grand Rapids. It includes the MSU Grand Rapids Research Center, Doug Meijer Medical Innovation Building and Perrigo's North American corporate headquarters. MSU's College of Human Medicine has roots here as well, located in the nearby Secchia Center.  Then it was off to visit Herman Miller, a subsidiary of MillerKnoll that produces office furniture, equipment and home furnishings. (28:07) - As our extraordinary driver, Tina Martin from Dean Trailways, began taking us to Hickory Corners and a visit to the Kellogg Biological Station, KBS interim director Jeff Conner hopped on the bus to prepare us for our visit to this MSU jewel. The W.K. Kellogg Biological Station, or KBS, is MSU's largest off-campus education complex and one of North America's premier inland field stations. ...

In Lucy's early life in Belfast, they would journey into the wild to feel a sense of safety and connection. Over time, their passion for the natural world and ancestral ways of life awakened them to the sacredness of the plants, animals, and even their own body.In recognizing that we are inseparable from nature, Lucy teaches that decolonization and ecological repair are possible. This conversation with Lucy will inspire you to create your own relationship with the land, our more than human kin, and the foods that nourish us. Through this deep ancestral remembering we can heal our Grandmother Earth, and by returning to the earth-honoring ways of our ancestors, we can also return to ourselves.

Rewilding is about seeking a reciprocal relationship to the environment and to one another. Material and cultural conditions kept humans in relative check with their ecologies for potentially millions of years, so what were they? If we are to understand this, we must hold up a lens and look at the diversity of hunter-gatherers (both past and present) to fully realize what their cultural and environmental limitations were–and are–today. Why did some abandon that way of life while others have fought to the death to defend it? What led humans to switch from one subsistence strategy to another, and what were the social and ecological effects of these changes? Is it possible to fully know? What do we know? To talk about these core rewilding questions with me, is Dr. Robert Kelly.Dr. Kelly first became involved in archaeology in 1973, as a high school student. He received his BA from Cornell University in anthropology in 1978, his MA from the University of New Mexico in 1980, and his doctorate from the University of Michigan in 1985. He has taught at various Colleges since 1986; from 1997 until retirement in 2023 he taught at the University of Wyoming. Dr. Kelly is the author of over 100 articles, books, and reviews, including The Lifeways of Hunter-Gatherers, The Fifth Beginning, and Archaeology, the most widely used college textbook in the field. He is a past president of the Society for American Archaeology, past editor of American Antiquity, North America's primary archaeological journal, and past secretary of the Archaeology Division of the American Anthropological Association. He has been a distinguished lecturer at many universities around the country and the world, including Argentina, Germany, France, Finland, Norway, Japan, and China, and he has worked on archaeological projects in Nevada, California, New Mexico, Kentucky, Georgia, Maine, Chile and, for the past 25 years, Wyoming and Montana. He has received over two million dollars in funding, with multiple grants from the National Science Foundation. Since 1973, the archaeology, ethnology, and ethnography of foraging peoples has been at the center of his research.Notes:Robert Kelly, Professor Archaeology at University of WyomingThe Fifth BeginningThe Lifeways of Hunter-Gatherers: The Foraging Spectrum (Revised) CARTA: Violence in Human Evolution – Robert Kelly: Do Hunter-Gatherers Tell Us About Human Nature?ANTHRO, ART, (CLOVIS) and the APOCALYPSE: Live from the field with Dr. ROBERT KELLY | DIH Podcast #1Human Behavioral Ecology (Cambridge Studies in Biological and Evolutionary Anthropology, Series Number 92) 1st EditionSupport the show

Are you overweight and either have pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes, and are ready to lose weight so you can reverse T2D?Excess weight, especially around the waistline, can lead to insulin resistance—a condition where the body's cells become less responsive to insulin. This resistance disrupts the regulation of blood sugar levels, contributing to the development and progression of type 2 diabetes. The good news is that weight loss has the potential to reverse these effects. By shedding those extra pounds, you can enhance insulin sensitivity and restore your body's ability to utilize glucose effectively. In fact, research has shown that even a modest weight loss of 5 to 10% can lead to substantial improvements in blood sugar control. In this week's episode, we're going to talk about:How preparing for weight loss success changed my lifeWays to make your journey toward good health less complicatedI share a list of foods you should eat and ones you should avoidRecommended Resources to help further your knowledge of health and nutritionRecommended Resources:Download Oscar's FREE guide, “Healthy Grocery Shopping Guide: Fruits & Veggies Edition”_____________________Connect With MeTo submit a question or join my mailing list, use the information below to connect with me.Join My Facebook Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/beatingdiabeteslifestyle Web - www.beatingdiabeteslifestyle.comEmail - hello@beatingdiabeteslifestyle.comInstagram - @beatingdiabeteslifestyleHiHo - https://hiho.link/g/beatingdiabeteslife_____________________©2023 Oscar Camejo - The Beating Diabetes Lifestyle

Over ten thousand years ago, Elders at that time knew that a great imbalance was coming, so the original instructions of how to live in harmony as one Earth family were partially hidden by a wave of forgetting to keep them safe. Each group of people had enough wisdom to survive and continue on, but no one people had all of the knowledge once available to them.It is time NOW, many Elders from around the world agree, to reweave the original instructions by coming together and sharing their unique cultural ways that are each a piece in the puzzle with much overlapping wisdom. With Earth's living systems being stressed and dishonored in new extremes, we must come together to weave a new story and new awakened presence as one Earth family in harmony with all of our relations if human beings are to continue on this Earth.About IlarionIlarion (Larry) ‘Kuuyux' Merculieff has decades of experience serving his people, the Unangan (Aleuts) of the Pribilof Islands and other indigenous peoples in a number of capacities—locally, statewide, nationally and internationally. For his entire career, Merculieff has been a passionate advocate for indigenous rights/wisdom, and harmonious relationship with the Earth Mother. His reach has been broad and varied.Close to Merculieff's heart are issues related to cultural and community wellness, traditional ways of living, Elder wisdom, climate change and the environment. Having had a traditional upbringing, Merculieff has been, and continues to be, a strong voice and activist calling for the meaningful application of traditional knowledge and wisdom obtained from Elders in Alaska and throughout the world in dealing with modern day challenges. He founded and currently heads the Global Center for Indigenous Leadership and Lifeways, and is a chief consultant and member in several other board councils. His present work revolves much around the council of Elders he co-founded, called the Wisdom Weavers of the World,  to bring the messages of Elders from throughout the world to global attention.  With a solid background as a community, business and environmental leader, Ilarion's later years reflect both this lifelong career path as well as the fulfilment of his cultural role as Kuuyux, or traditional messenger for the Unangan people.Support the show

Dr. Kelly was all the cohosts thesis advisor at the University of Wyoming. Dr. Robert L. Kelly wrote the book, The Lifeways of Hunter-Gatherers: The Foraging Spectrum, on hunter-gatherer archaeology and the mathematical proofs behind it. He was involved in early research at Gatecliff Rockshelter and then he continued on to influence archaeological theory for the rest of his career. He writes a regular textbook with Dr. David Hurst Thomas named “Archaeology” (latest edition). He has also written a book on the future of archaeology called The Fifth Beginning. We have a super interesting philosophical conversation about archaeology and its meaning. Bob recounts his early life and how he found his way out in the desert with David Hurst Thomas during his first days as an archaeologist. We then discuss his transition from Cornell to the University of New Mexico and the University of Michigan, and have a lengthy discussion about his mentor, Lewis Binford and his eccentric life. The majority of the podcast however, is an in-depth conversation about anthropology, how the field has changed over the years, and what it means to be human. Many of us, as we become parents, have some idea of how we do NOT want to discipline our children.  Then the children begin to arrive, either as our own children or the children in our care or classrooms, and we may find we are not as certain about what we WILL do when challenging behaviors arise.  Rarely is there one tool that solves all situations.  But one tool does stand at the foundation of all discipline tools that are meaningful and appropriate toward the sacred nature of our children.  That is love.  In the LOVE approach to Discipline with Loving Awareness, Cynthia Aldinger shares eight aspects of child guidance derived from the word LOVE as an acronym.  They are Listening, Laughter/Humor, Order/Clarity, Objectivity, Versatility, Vulnerability, Energy, and Enthusiasm, and each of these topics has a number of tools to consider.  In this conversation with Cynthia, we will hear about a few of these tools and the online course where you can explore more.To discover more please visit lifewaysnorthamerica.org and kimberton.orgMusic is Glacier Bells by Daniel Birch.

Welcome to Part 2 of our bonus episode, “What it Means to Be Human,” where we explore this profound and philosophical question. To help us find the answers, we talk with guests Laura Scappaticci of the Anthroposophical Society, and Cynthia Aldinger, Founder of LifeWays North America. We open the show by asking what the future goals for society must be, which leads us into topics like seeking humanity in ourselves and others, and understanding life beyond the material world. We continue our exploration of our overarching question by looking at humanity's role on the planet. From here, we delve into topical societal concerns, namely the subjects of race, and eliminating racism. The points we cover pull the curtain back on social division and where some of these problems lie. Yet, we also supply remedies to combat racism, some of which include people-based solutions through physical engagement. Be sure to join us today!  Key Points From This Episode:• Introducing today's guests, Laura Scappaticci and Cynthia Aldinger.• What future goals the Anthroposophical Society is seeking to achieve.• Ways you can connect with people.• Hear about Laura's spiritual perspective.• What helps Cynthia understand and recognize her humanness.• How differences can strengthen humanity.• Cynthia talks about her experiences as a white child in a lower-middle-class family.• Cynthia tells us about how LifeWays has evolved to become anti-racist.• How Cynthia ensured white children would be exposed to and accept different races.• Why racial acceptance needs to come through people, and not just lessons.Links Mentioned in Today's Episode:We Nurture CollectiveWe Nurture on InstagramWe Nurture on FacebookLifeWays North AmericaAnthroposophical Society

Building a strong foundation in the early years of development is critical for the young child as this creates a solid base for later learning to stand upon.  If a child's foundation is not strong, difficulties will be met in future years.   Rudolf Steiner, founder of Waldorf education, identified a framework of 12 senses that educators and parents can work with to support children's development.  The first four of these senses are called the Foundational Senses.  By supporting the healthy development of these senses in the early years from birth to age seven, we can help our young children build a strong foundation for life.  A curriculum that is built around supporting the Foundational Senses is a therapeutic education and our children are in great need of this curriculum!Building a Strong Foundation: Care of the Young Child's Senses course begins on September 16. On Episode 27 of A Life in Ruins Podcast, we interview Dr. Robert L. Kelly.
