Mike returns from Reggae Rise Up in Florida with wild stories, including a last-minute tire change that almost derailed the whole trip. We discuss the legendary Dave Foral of Dirty Heads—his art, his music, and his general awesomeness. Then things take a turn: museum glass so invisible it might be a conspiracy, the Department of Education getting deconstructed like a flimsy Ikea shelf, and why no major political figures seem to be scrutinizing the current presidency. Tony drops a shocking story about a beloved ex-student charged with attempted murder, we sing the praises of Khan Academy, and—wait for it—there was a kangaroo on the loose in Colorado?! Plus, crazy animal encounters, inflation rants, and all the usual nonsense.Good to be back at it friends!Cheers!m&t

Tony Hoffer is most known for his colorful, gritty productions and mixes that pop out of the speakers. His work over the years spans across alternative, electronic, rock, pop and indie. Hoffer spent his early years in Miami making music on 2 cassette decks and a reel-to-reel machine. As a teenager, he moved to Los Angeles and went ‘hi-tech' upgrading to a Tascam 4-track cassette deck falling in love with music and the art of production. Tony started off playing guitar in ‘post-punk' bands and fell in love with sampling his favorite post-punk records (Cure, Chameleons, Bauhaus) into his own songs and productions. His big break was co-producing Beck's double Grammy nominated album ‘Midnite Vultures' which was a hybrid of intricate sampling and live playing. That initially led to him to working with Air, Phoenix and Supergrass. Some additional credits include: M83, The Kooks, Belle & Sebastian, Silversun Pickups, The Fratellis, Depeche Mode, Fitz & The Tantrums, Blondie, Metric, Chromeo, Dirty Heads, The Snuts, Rainbow Kitten Surprise and Ziggy Marley. Backyards of Key West Podcast with Mark Baratto

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 11, 2023 9:51

In this exclusive interview reboot, Mark Baratto sits down with Rapper and Singer of the Dirty Heads, Jared Watson (aka Dirty J). This interview happened 30 minutes before the band went on stage for the beginning of their national tour, down here at the Key West Amphitheater. It may have been short, but for those fans out there, we touched on the bands origin story and their beginnings. More on the Dirty Heads Following in the footsteps of their California brothers Sublime, Huntington Beach's Dirty Heads mix hip-hop, reggae, and rock along with that laid-back South Cali attitude. The group formed in 2003 when punk rocker Dustin Bushnell (aka Duddy B) asked his friend, rapper Jared Watson (aka Dirty J), to collaborate on a project that would focus on positive vibes and infectious grooves. Watson added singing to his vocal skills, and with percussionist Jon Olazabal, an acoustic trio version of Dirty Heads began playing shows and building an audience.  They soon hooked up with producer Rob Cavallo and headed into the studio to record their debut album for Warner Bros., but differences with the label had them looking for other opportunities. Still, the band was able to retain most of its work, including sessions with drummer Josh Freese, along with the late-Beatles collaborator Billy Preston in one of the keyboardist's last recordings. The finished album, Any Port in a Storm, would arrive in 2008, with a deluxe edition following in 2010. The deluxe version featured the track “Lay Me Down” with special guest Rome Ramirez of Sublime with Rome. The song would top Billboard's Alternative Songs chart just before the summer of 2010.  They followed up two years later with Cabin by the Sea and later recorded an acoustic version of the title track. This, in turn, led to an entire acoustic album in 2013 called Home: Phantoms of Summer. Dirty Heads' next album, Sound of Change, would prove to be a breakthrough for the now-veteran band, debuting at number eight on the Billboard Top 200 while topping the Independent and Alternative Albums charts upon its May 2014 release.  Building on their renewed success, Dirty Heads enlisted a bevy of industry hitmakers to work on their self-titled 2016 follow-up, which — thanks to its mainstream appeal — again charted high on the Billboard Top 200. The following year saw the band drop its sixth studio album, Swim Team, featuring the singles “Vacation” and “Staloney.” Also included on the album was the track “So Glad You Made It,” featuring 311's Nick Hexum. The single “Listen to Me” arrived in early 2019 and was later included on Dirty Heads' Dave Cobb-produced seventh album Super Moon. ~ David Jeffries, Rovi Website: https://www.dirtyheads.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dirtyheads Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DirtyHeads Twitter: https://twitter.com/dirtyheads YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/DirtyHeads Spotify: https://play.spotify.com/artist/6GkJh85o22LfD2vgL9DP6f?play=true&utm_source=open.spotify.com&utm_medium=open Apple iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/dirty-heads/id287941061

Be the change, that's how Gerard Longo feels about life and that is the message of the song Indigo by Dirty Heads.  He appreciates this song encouraging you to go against the grain and do what makes you happy. Indigo the color stands for tranquility, harmony, confidence, and integrity.  When you are working in alignment with your passions you experience tranquility and harmony.  He has a company that does just that for talented people in the music industry. Gerard is also happy to be an example to his nieces and nephews about being an entrepreneur with confidence and integrity.  He hopes to be an example but also save them some hard lessons by going through them and finding better ways first! He started with a blog in Pennsylvania about the local Indy music scene. Then he started a podcast about the music scene. And now, has now grown into a company with employees and they are getting ready to explore other markets. Full Show Notes

“When you're in that flow, it's the most magical feeling ever,” reflects the noted fine artist and graphic designer Jay Alders. “It feels like the colors are shooting out of my palette, it's just right there, and all I have to do is scoop up a glob of light that's emerging from my palette. If I can have someone look at my paintings and feel some of that, to me that's success.” Jay joins us on the podcast to discuss the collaborative nature of his work, which in addition to his own disarmingly original paintings also includes concert posters and album covers designed for artists such as Slightly Stoopid, 311, Donavon Frankenreiter, Citizen Cope, the Dirty Heads and Echo Movement. He has become well-known throughout the surfing community for his original surf art paintings, as well as for his “live art” performance displays at concerts and music festivals. His work—a blend of “surrealism, cartoon art and surrealism,” according to Forbes—has been presented in galleries across the United States and in Europe and featured at surf exhibitions from the North Shore of Oahu to the Jersey Shore, and he has lately emerged as a pioneer in the digital art space, with a series of dynamic, ocean-inspired NFTs. We're trading in our pens for our paintbrushes with this episode, but Jay's insights into the creative process, and the story of how he's turned his singular gifts into a successful freelance career, offer important takeaways for artists and writers alike. Shadows and The Rev from Avenged Sevenfold. Jared tells Stryker about how back in high school, both he and Duddy B would write rhymes....fun, funny, offensive rhymes.  That lead to the guys writing their own original songs like "Antelope" and "I Got No Time".   Jared gives so much love and props to the Beastie Boys, Pharcyde and Linkin Park!   The guys chat about what actually IS success.... Jared tells Stryker the band talks about how they can improve after every show. These guys care! It's so cool to hear how dedicated they are as a band to the craft!  Stryker and Jared discuss "Life's Been Good", the Dirty Heads cover of the Joe Walsh song.  The guys play a game of "Dirty Heads" Jeopardy. Jared tells Stryker he's a huge Incubus fan! Jared conveys to Stryker that the new album Midnight Control is their best material, best album since Any Port in a Storm. Jared talks about his new vocal coach and the training involved plus applying it to the live show.  Stryker asks Jared about the song "Vacation" going viral on TikTok.  Jared also shares that each band member now has responsibilities within the band.  Stryker asks Jared about the most expensive music videos Dirty Heads have created..... Stryker and Jared discuss the early shows at The Roxy and how Duddy would pack up party buses and fill up The Roxy with friends and fans from Huntington Beach!  This led to the guys signing with their manager "Cheese"......who is still their manager.  Jared and Stryker chat about Dirty Heads getting signed to Warner Bros. Records and also getting dropped by them, but...the good folks at WBR let Dirty Heads keep their master recordings!  Jared Watson is one talented and dedicated dude! Thank you so much for watching and listening to another episode of Tuna on Toast with Stryker.

In this episode, Ted Stryker welcomes The Interrupters to the Tuna on Toast podcast studio.  This pod is filled with all kinds of emotions, it's a fun rollercoaster!  The awesome Aimee, Kevin, Justin and Jesse drop their new album Raised by Wolves on August 5th. Raised by Wolves was produced by Kevin Bivona and recorded in the homemade studio Justin and Jesse Bivona built during the pandemic.  Aimee reveals that this is by far the most personal album she has ever written, totally autobiographical.  Aimee opens up to Stryker about her lifelong battle with depression and how the biggest thing that changed her life while making the full length album is the treatment she did called TMS.   Since the treatment....as Aimee says, life has been better in all ways! Kevin tells Stryker the story about auditioning for The Transplants when he was 18 years old and getting the gig as the keyboard player! This job with Tim Armstrong, Travis Barker and Skinhead Rob paved the way to playing the Warped Tour and forming a strong relationship with Tim, Travis and many other musicians.  The three Bivona brothers tell Stryker about the band they formed in 2009 called The Telecasters... and going on tour with Sugar Ray, Dirty Heads and Aimee as a solo artist!  Jesse and Justin were only 20 years old on this tour!  In 2010 Jesse and Justin started to tech for Sugar Ray, setting up all the gear at every show...working their butts off!  Justin and Jesse were then asked to actually join Sugar Ray by Mark McGrath (as they ate at Jerry's Deli on Ventura!) Aimme Interrupter tells Stryker how she ventured to Los Angeles from Montana at 18 years old.  Aimee would walk on Sunset Blvd. hoping to find musicians who played punk rock.  She did meet a band called No Motive which led to Aimee meeting Randy Jackson.   Randy shopped her music around and eventually got her a solo deal with Elektra Records....Aimiee worked with Mark Ronson on her album which got shelved.  Not too often mentioned....Aimee tells Stryker that it was love at first sight with Kevin (they are married). Please find The Interrupters on tour wherever you may live.  These four talented humans are also some of the nicest and most gracious people you'll find.   Thank you to the band, and thank you to YOU for checking out another episode of Tuna on Toast with Stryker.

We had the pleasure of interviewing The Unlikely Candidates over Zoom video.Coming off their multi-city tour with legendary band 311, The Unlikely Candidates were welcomed home with open arms as fans and Fort Worth residents listened to new and fan-favorite music from their album. The party included performances from the band, a specialty drink, raffles, and a champagne toast to celebrate this milestone. “Panther Island,” which features 8 new and 3 previously released songs, was written over Zoom during the COVID-19 pandemic including “High Low,” which was recorded in lead singer Kyle Morris' closet. “The record is a kaleidoscopic landscape of genre and style that changes from song to song, a greatest hits of the sonic worlds the band has inhabited over the years,” says Morris. “Thematically it's just as varied, shifting from songs about the chaos on the streets and loneliness behind the phone screens of America during the pandemic, to humorous tales of twenty-something malaise and the many ways the heart breaks; when love or loved ones are lost. At the heart of this album is the ethos of taking a bad situation and making something of it. It was written during the pandemic while the world was shut down, by a band who has hit enough roadblocks to delay a debut album nine years.” Following the release of their album, The Unlikely Candidates are going back on the road, making stops in the Midwest, the Mountain States, and Canada. All upcoming tour dates can be found here. TUC has previously toured with Fall Out Boy, The Dirty Heads, and Sublime with Rome, just to name a few. “Its been an honor working with The Unlikely Candidates and I am so very proud for them to release their first full length album,” said Ryan Metheny, Director of Product Management at The Orchard. “After so many ups and downs over the last few years, they continue to blow me away with how hard they work and get through any roadblock put in front of them. It will be a great joy to see them play these songs in front of their fans this summer.” Signed to Another Century, a subsidiary of Sony Music, The Unlikely Candidates are best known for their 2019 hit “Novocaine,” which reached #1 on the Alternative Charts. The song was also featured in the Season 4 trailer of HULU's Veronica Mars, and on Now That's What I Call Music, with The music video becoming the #6 most viewed Alternative video of 2019 on VEVO.We want to hear from you!
