Kara Gooch, Engagement & Career Coach for active Apprentices with her dream company, Accenture, participated in Goodwill's Rising Together training program. After completion, she was offered a role within Accenture. Accenture is a partner of Goodwill's Rising Together initiative, which connects people, particularly those from populations that have been historically marginalized, with a wide range of resources, including skills training, transportation and internet access to support entrance into and longevity in the workforce. As a Goodwill partner, Accenture expands its Skills to Succeed services for youth and young adults, which provides skills training and resources to help them navigate their careers. The program also uses immersive virtual reality training to help people impacted by the criminal justice system learn to tell their stories on a personal level to interviewers and other people in their lives. Accenture recognize the important role professional apprenticeship can play in closing the skills gap in North America and increasing access to digital economy careers. It believes that apprenticeship programs create new career pathways for previously untapped talent and re-skill those whose jobs have been – or will be – disrupted by technology. The Apprenticeship Program at Accenture is an earn-and-learn model with benefits that provides a pathway to a full-time role with Accenture after a typically 12-month-long apprenticeship—a role with career opportunities for continued growth. Since launching the Accenture North America apprenticeship program in 2016, it has onboarded more than 2,000 apprentices. WorkingNation, a nonprofit media company focussed on the future of work, has released a short documentary film called "Glory in Overcoming." It focuses on three women ofcolor, all single mothers, who completed a skills-training program called the Goodwill Digital Career Accelerator.  Kara Gooch, one of the women, had three daughtersunder age four and was getting divorced when she entered the training program she says changed her family's lives.  The two other women, Chelsea Rucker and ShaheeraAlnatshia, also overcame significant obstacles before pivoting and finding tech careers.--Most people associate Goodwill with donation centers and thrift stores.   The Goodwill Digital Career Accelerator is a training program designed in partnership with Google and with more than $29 million in funding and grants from Google.org.  Since 2017, Goodwill says more than 1.5 million people have upgraded their digital and tech skills throughthis and its other training programs, and that more than 350,000 U.S. workers have landed jobs (both in the tech industry and in "non-tech" industries where tech skills are in demand.)

This week on A Call to Lead, you'll meet Julie Sweet, who is CEO of Accenture North America. Julie's story is remarkable. She was raised by hard-working parents who told their daughter that she could do anything. Julie ran with that ethos all the way to Columbia Law School and a partner position at law giant Cravath, Swaine & Moore. Then she did something really unconventional: Julie quit Cravath, joined Accenture as general counsel, and rose quickly to head Accenture's North American unit, where she oversees one of Accenture's largest, most strategically-important businesses. In this podcast, Julie talks about what we all have to do amidst the tech revolution and disruption: learn continuously, develop flexibility, welcome divergent views, and collaborate constantly. Here are five things that Julie said that struck my team as particularly interesting:   Focus on learning and be deliberate in building a learning and development plan for yourself. "If learning is strategic and important, then it needs to be treated as a business priority." Think about risk-taking in your career as a positive. "Instead of thinking about fear, which is [inherently a] negative, or "I'm taking risks," start thinking about, Am I pushing myself and the organization far enough to achieve what they can achieve?'" The convergence of industries means experience spanning multiple industries is important and differentiating. "In a world where you have industry convergence, you can't just have people grow in the industry; they need to understand more." Learn communication skills from leaders around you that communicate well. "To become a good communicator, you need to become a student of other good communicators." In moments of stress, the ‘system' doesn't need more stress injected into it. It needs calm, stability, and rationality. Julie Sweet took an unusual road to become CEO of Accenture North America, a position which landed her at #39 on Fortune's 2016 list of the World's Most Powerful Women. In 1987, 19-year old Sweet went to China, going to a foreign culture to learn a strange language in an era when learning Japanese was far more fashionable. Risk-taking and doing things a little differently has become the theme of Sweet's professional career, taking her from partner at Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP—one of the first females to earn that title—to her current position at Accenture NA, which has $31 billion in revenue and nearly 50,000 employees. Sweet helped Accenture land on Fortune's list of the 100 Best Places to Work by allowing employees returning from parental leave to work locally, providing 40 hours of subsidized back-up care, and prioritizing a diverse and inclusive work environment. Just this year, Accenture was the first big consulting firm to publish race and gender stats, another example of Sweet doing things a little bit differently as we discuss in the latest episode of Fortune Unfiltered.
