Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!Length: 1 hour 23 minutesSynopsis: Tonight (3/6/25), in lieu of our Thursday night Pirkei Avos shiur for women, we continued learning the Ralbag's toalos ("beneficial lessons") on Megilas Esther, picking up were we left off last year, at the beginning of Chapter 6. Unlike last year, in which we JUST read the Ralbag, we decided to read and discuss the pesukim this year before learning the toeles. This resulted in a slower pace, but (I hope!) a richer learning experience. We only got through five toalos, but we delved into them deeper than we did last year, and came away with some really sharp insights into the Megilah and some nice practical applications.-----מקורות:Neima Novetsky's translation of Megillas Esther on AlHaTorah.orgרלב"ג - אסתר פרק ו, תועלות ל"ה-מרד"ק - תהלים קטז:ידרש"י - אסתר ו:טErica Brown, "Esther: Power, Fate, and Fragility in Exile"-----The Torah content for this week has been sponsored by Rifka Kaplan-Peck in tribute to the Bibas family. Daf Shvui/Weekly Daf: Give me forty minutes or so and I'll give you a daf or so
We are more or less done with the daughters of Zelophehad, (though are we ever really done with the daughters of Zelophehad?), but we are continuing with a midrashic sugya dedicated to the sanctification of the month/shabat/the curious holiday of the fifteenth of Av and what that is all about—and it seems to be about a lot of stuff. On this pod, recorded and uploaded just before Pesach, we are gliding in for a landing on the large Daughters of Zelophehad midrashic run we've had for the past few dapim. Length: 1 hourSynopsis: This evening (3/27/24), in our Wednesday night Tehilim shiur, we began a new project: re-learning Hallel! (or at least, the first two chapters) The last time I gave shiur on Hallel was three years ago, and there's been enough distance and enough natural forgetting that I feel like I can learn everything with a relatively fresh mind. And even if I can't, we have SOOO many more resources on AlHaTorah than we had last time! Tonight we began with the first perek of Hallel. After translating the perek and identifying the pivot point, we raised a ton of questions and began theorizing. Next time (בג"ה) we'll refine our approach and see what the meforshim have to say.-----מקורות:תהלים פרק קיגתרגום רס"גאבן עזרא - קהלת ג:יאשיעורי ר' עובדיה ספורנו - תהלים קיג:ארד"ק - תהלים צ:אמגילה דף לא עמוד א-----This week's Torah content has been sponsored anonymously. Length: 1 hour 36 minutesSynopsis: This morning (2/2/24), in our Machshavah Lab series for women, we continued our analysis of the wacky midrash we started last week. I was nervous because I had only had a few steps to bring to the table prior to starting shiur, but thanks to the combined powers of the minds of those who attended, we managed to take MANY more steps and emerge with a unified understanding of this midrash! We also touched upon a number of methodological tips along the way, including a reference to the SECRET site on AlHaTorah.org! Daf Shvui/Weekly Daf: Give me forty minutes or so and I'll give you a daf or so
We're still working through the halakhic details of the case of the daughters of Zelophehad, and we've added working through the details of the Josephites and their claim for more land, and others who were denied a portion in the Land of Israel. Fascinating stuff here. All in this week's daf. Join us. This week's daf can found in the following places:1. Vilna page (Hebrew and Aramaic) from Hebrewbooks.org2. In this episode with Rabbanit Neima Novetsky, we discuss the different perspectives on Yitro's character and his role in Moshe's life and personal development. R. David Tzvi Hoffman's Torah commentary is showcased in this conversation as well as the contribution of Alhatorah.org to the study and teaching of Torah. Our Shemot series focuses on 19th-20th century Jewish thinkers and their perspective on the parsha.
Daf Shvui/Weekly Daf: Give me forty minutes or so and I'll give you a daf or so
Its a tour of Tannaitic texts, a veritable a Mishnah, Midrash, and Tosefta fabula in this week's daf. This week, within the continuing discussion of the line of inheritance we visit one of the most awful stories in the book of Judges, we check in on Solomon's worthiness to rule, we get some rules to live by and we bring to an end, the discussion of the mishnah. All in this week's daf. This week's daf can found in the following places:1. Daf Shvui/Weekly Daf: Give me forty minutes or so and I'll give you a daf or so
Two new questions this week: 1. How long following an acquisition, a qinyan can one renege from the acquisition? 2. Why does the mishnah twice note, in different ways, that a woman does not inherit from her son even though she may bequeath to them. All in this week's daf. Daf Shvui/Weekly Daf: Give me forty minutes or so and I'll give you a daf or so
Still trying to figure out the order of inheritance. You'd be surprised how many different paths to bequeath and inherit there are. And then a short conversation about the judicial mechanics of inheriting, and a jaunt into "the rabbis don't know everything."All in this week's daf. This week's daf can found in the following places:1. Once again into the breach. Can a husband inherit from his wife from the Torah? Or can only a son inherit from his mother? Three versions of the conversation in this week's daf. Also the two poems that I read this week were from Leah Naomi Green's first book of poetry The More Extravagant Feast available through Graywolf Press. This week's daf can found in the following places:1. Daf Shvui/Weekly Daf: Give me forty minutes or so and I'll give you a daf or so
Still trying to figure out the patriarchal precedence in inheritance. Zecharyah ben Haqatzav putting up futile resistance to the patriarchal hegemony. A fun little story about a rabbi on rabbi beatdown. And, of course, the gemara is worried about the estate slip-sliding away from the father's tribe/family to the mother's.It's all in this week's daf. Daf Shvui/Weekly Daf: Give me forty minutes or so and I'll give you a daf or so
It's a new chapter and a new conversation in which the Mishnah and then the Talmud takes on the question of inheritance—where did possession all start? Is that good or bad? Who gets to inherit? (Spoiler alert, on the whole, inheritance is another way to preserve the patriarchal line.) Well, let's get started. This week's daf can found in the following places:1. Daf Shvui/Weekly Daf: Give me forty minutes or so and I'll give you a daf or so
To celebrate the completion of the second chapter of Baba Batra, I invited Charlotte Fonrobert, a professor in the Religious Studies department at Stanford University whose current research focuses on the rabbinic eruv, or Shabbat boundary, and the way that the laws and culture of eruv define Jewish identity. Our wide ranging conversation delved into the 2000 plus years of eruv—from the Qumran community to the Hamptons and the Daily Show. Following the conversation we study together a bit—the links to the text are below. Length: 1 hour 35 minutesSynopsis: This evening (3/23/23), in lieu of our Thursday Night Pirkei Avos shiur, we did a Chumash Exploration shiur on Sforno's view that the Egyptian exile was NOT decreed by Hashem, but was entirely our fault, and could have been avoided. We read and discussed Sforno's commentary on the first fourteen pesukim of Sefer Shemos and the three pesukim of the Bris Bein ha'Besarim, along with the newly published notes taken by a student of the Sforno on his rebbi's Chumash shiurim. Although the format of this shiur was different, we succeded in getting a new and comprehensive picture of exactly how the Egyptian slavery went down.-----Link to the AlHaTorah article on "Purpose of the Egyptian Bondage" מקורות:ספורנו ושיעורי ר' עובדיה ספורנו - שמות א:א-ידמדרש רבה שמות א:חרמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות עבודה זרה וחוקות הגוים א:גיחזקאל כ:ה-ירמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר זמנים, הלכות תעניות א:ב-גספורנו ושיעורי ר' עובדיה ספורנו - בראשית טו:יג-טזספורנו ושיעורי ר' עובדיה ספורנו - תהלים קה:כג-כהרד"ק - תהלים קיז:ארמב"ם - אבות ה:ד -----The Torah content for Rosh Chodesh Nisan has been sponsored by my friend and fellow Ralbag-enthusiast, Rabbi Dovid Campbell. Length: 1 hour 6 minutesSynopsis: This evening (3/8/23), in our Wednesday night Tefilah shiur, we might have bitten off more than we could chew. Our goal was to understand the opening phrase in Shema Koleinu. To do this, we analyzed Shemos 2:23-25 with Sforno's commentary AND the recently published alternative Sforno commentary on AlHaTorah. What made this ambitious is that we ALSO read Sforno's commentaries on nearly all the pesukim he cites - a task we attempted in a Chumash shiur I gave last year. This was a LOT of Sforno. Did we emerge with an understanding of the line from Shema Koleinu? ... Kind of. We definitely took a few steps, but there remains work to be done. We shall see what develops in the meantime.-----Related Rabbi Schneeweiss Content:3/23/22: Why Did Hashem Redeem Us From Egypt? One more conversation about wine fragility, at least in market exchanges. Who is responsible for my wine going bad? Daf Shvui/Weekly Daf: Give me forty minutes or so and I'll give you a daf or so
This week we follow the logic of guarding against criminal overcharging - taking advantage of drought conditions - (not) selling basic necessities - is wine a basic necessity? - exporting foodstuffs out of the Land of Israel - all the characters in the Ruth story - and in the "news you can use" category, what was Abraham's mother's name? Daf Shvui/Weekly Daf: Give me forty minutes or so and I'll give you a daf or so
Clear mishnaic text will be amiguified and then disambiguified in this weeks daf which follows and queries the tale of a child whose father sent him to buy some oil and then drama erupts. The ambiguity is where this text lives. So come, pull up a beverage and blintz (or other dairy delicacy) (for shavuot) and join us as we try to make clarity out of chaos. So… it's been a minute, but we're back. This week we go down a bit of an interesting rabbit hole about rural day labor in late antiquity. We also look at how our sugya was constructed. Daf Shvui/Weekly Daf: Give me forty minutes or so and I'll give you a daf or so
Several facets of acquisition are interrogated in this week's daf. What completes acquisition—measuring? agreeing on a price? introducing the stuff into one's domain? Then, what type of acquisitive choreography should be employed—picking up an item? pulling an item? Is one better than the other? Then, is the item bought all at once (in the case of grain or oil, for example), or a bit at a time as it is poured into the measuring vessel? All this is in the week's sugya.
