Summary This week, Anna and Nico catch up with Antonio Sanso, Researcher at the Ethereum Foundation and Youssef El Housni, Engineer at ConsenSys and builder of Linea. They discuss Antonio and Youssef's new work, Families of prime-order endomorphism-equipped embedded curves on pairing-friendly curves and dive into Elliptic Curve cryptography, Bandersnatch and Verkle Tries amongst much more, before dissecting what terms in the title of this paper truly mean. After getting into the weeds of cryptographic technicalities, the group explores where this work could be used and what it would enable. How can I address and eliminate research anxiety? Feelings of fear and uncertainty associated with authentic scientific research and production, not knowing where to begin an exploratory thought or approach to a hypothesis, and even facing imposter syndrome during publication - all constitute research anxiety. And, we've found a virtuoso capable of answering our question at length. We're in conversation with Prof. Manisha Pathak-Shelat (Professor, Communication & Digital Platforms and Strategies & Chair - Centre for Development Management and Communication (CDMC) MICA, Editor, JOCC, India). She's served as Editor of the Journal of Creative Communication, SAGE Publications, and has also been a Researcher at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. A leading voice in the area of communication research and publication. In this episode, we talk about the following: 1:07 - why does research scare so many people away? 3:10 - understanding the umbrella term ‘communication research.' 12:38 - tips and tricks to be a good researcher today
In this episode, John Surdakowski is joined by Dhanesh Shelat, global digital marketing director at one of L'Oreal's leading skincare brands and a real estate entrepreneur. Dhanesh brings years of experience in SEO and digital marketing along with a lot of interest in AI and branding to an engaging conversation that taps into: How SEO has dramatically changed over the past 10 years. SEO Backlinking vs. Public Relations in eCommerce. How a brand's decision to sell Direct-to-consumers or through eRetailers should always be consumer-first; taking into consideration the consumer journey and accounting for different consumer preferences - all while owning the brand messaging, image, and identity. What does consumer loyalty really mean today and how are leading brands stressing product innovation, culture, and messaging to drive it. The role AI plays (and is expected to further play) in branding, CRM, brand loyalty, and customer experience. We are moving towards more immersive online experiences that blend hyper-personalization, AI, metaverse, AR, and VR. Early adopters are the most to benefit. LakYah Tyner is a 1st year PhD student at Northeastern University co-advised by abhi Shelat and Daniel Wichs. Her research focuses on cryptography, with recent works involving Property Preserving Hashing and Threshold Signature Schemes. Put differently, she's accomplished considerably more in less than a year of graduate school than I did as a first year (we're a semester in and she has a paper in Crypto!), and today she joined the Boston Computation Club to share some of that hard-earned wisdom. LakYah's talk focused on the difficult problem of efficiently hashing data such that the hashes preserve a binary predicate relationship from the pre-image, specifically a relationship relating to the distance between the two compared objects. This is a fascinating topic with implications for systems like Apple's facial recognition and attempts at privacy-preserving CSAM detection. We're super stoked LakYah agreed to speak to us today and we hope you enjoy her talk as much as we did! This afternoon (10/14/21), in our Rambam Bekius chavurah, we FINALLY found a satisfactory answer (or answers) to the question of how the Rambam could be supported by his brother while he learned Torah, thanks to R' Shelat's footnotes on several of the Rambam's letters - plus a halacha we missed in Hilchos Sanhedrin. The first letter we read also showcased the Rambam's human side, revealing the depths of his grief over the loss of his brother. After wrapping up this topic we returned to Chapter 1 where the Rambam (finally) presents the obligation to learn Toarh.----------מקורות:רמב"ם - אגרת לר' יפת הדיין עם הערת ר' שילתרמב"ם - אגרת לר' אפרים מצור עם הערת ר' שילתרמב"ם - אגרת בענין המחלוקת עם ראש הישיבה עם הערת ר' שילתרמב"ם - משנה תורה, ספר שופטים, הלכות סנהדרין כג:הרמב"ם - משנה תורה, ספר המדע, הלכות תלמוד תורה א:ח-יא----------This week's Torah content has been sponsored by an anonymous donor, whom I consider to be both a friend and a role model.----------Bekius Disclaimer:Note that this is a bekius chavurah - as opposed to an iyun shiur. This afternoon (6/17/21 at YBT) in our Rambam Bekius chavurah we concluded the sixth chapter of Hilchos Deios, which is about the treatment of widows and orphans. In the remaining time we took up a question that was raised yesterday: According to the Rambam, if yedias Hashem (knowledge of God) is the ultimate perfection, then where do mitzvos bein adam l'chaveiro (interpersonal commandments) fit in? We answered this question by reading - in bekius fashion - the final ideas in the Moreh ha'Nevuchim, which made for a fitting conclusion to the last Rambam Bekius shiur of the 2020-2021 academic year. Tune in next time, at the end of July and beginning of August (bg"h) for our brief summer session, in which we will take up the 7th and final chapter of Hilchos Deios! ----------מקורות:רמב"ם - ספר המצוות, לא תעשה רנורמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות דעות ו:ירמב"ם - מורה הנבוכים ג:נד ----------Bekius Disclaimer: Note that this is a bekius chavurah - as opposed to an iyun shiur. This afternoon (6/15/21 at YBT) in our Rambam Bekius chavurah we continued on in the sixth chapter of Hilchos Deios, which covers a variety of bein adam l'chaveiro mitzvos. Today we learned about three: loving your fellow Jew, loving the convert, and not hating your brother in your heart, which also touched upon the mitzvah to rebuke your fellow Jew. This afternoon (6/14/21 at YBT) in our Rambam Bekius chavurah we began the sixth and penultimate chapter of Hilchos Deios, in which the Rambam writes about the importance of associating with chachamim and their talmidim. Will we finish the 6th perek before the summer? We shall see! Let's plan to do what we always try to do: let the momentum of the learning dictate the pace, and not allow ourselves to feel rushed. After all, we don't want to find ourselves in a position where we are forced to say what Averroes said about himself: "Ibn Rushd."----------מקורות:רמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות דעות ו:ארמב"ם - משנה תורה, ספר המדע, הלכות יסודי התורה ד:ברמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות תשובה ה:א ----------Bekius Disclaimer: Note that this is a bekius chavurah - as opposed to an iyun shiur. This afternoon (6/10/21 at YBT) in our Rambam Bekius chavurah we (miraculously?) finished Hilchos Deios Chapter 5 today, which covered several other areas of chachamim conduct: perception of their speech, walking, dress, management of personal finances, and business conduct. Our goal is to try to finish Hilchos Deios Chapter 6 next week, which is our last week of yeshiva before the summer, then tackle Hilchos Deios Chapter 7 during our summer program, and then start Hilchos Talmud Torah towards the beginning of the 2021-2022 academic year.----------מקורות:רמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות דעות ה:ז-יג ----------Bekius Disclaimer: Note that this is a bekius chavurah - as opposed to an iyun shiur. This afternoon (6/9/21 at YBT) in our Rambam Bekius chavurah we continued the chapter about how talmidei chachamim should conduct themselves in the particulars of their lives, which covered the topics listed in the title. The most interesting thing (to me, anyway) was how the Rambam classified the many statements of Chazal on these topics. Certain statements we had assumed were standard for all people, but the Rambam codified them in this perek, which means that they're for chachamim. This afternoon (6/8/21 at YBT) in our Rambam Bekius chavurah we began the chapter about how chachamim (or talmidei chachamim) should conduct themselves in the particulars of their lives. Today's topic focused on how chachamim should and shouldn't eat. We contrasted this with some similar statements at the end of Hilchos Tumas Ochlin, and that comparison led to a key hypothesis about how this chapter fits into Hilchos Deios as a whole. We'll see how our theory plays out!----------מקורות:רמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות דעות ה:א-ברמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר טהרה, הלכות טומאת אוכלין טז:יב ----------Bekius Disclaimer: Note that this is a bekius chavurah - as opposed to an iyun shiur. This afternoon (6/7/21 at YBT) in our Rambam Bekius chavurah we decided to take a brief break from Hilchos Deios to learn some Rambams about Bris Milah, since there will be a bris in yeshiva tomorrow - the first one I've been to since pre-COVID! We began with the Rambam's four initial presentations of the mitzvah, then we read his explanations for the reason for Bris Milah in the Moreh ha'Nevuchim, and we ended by going over the berachos one says on milah. (We ended the shiur on time and stopped the recording, but we ended up reading through the next few halachos and the last halachos in the third chapter; sorry they weren't recorded!)----------מקורות:רמב"ם - ספר המצות, עשה רטורמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר אהבה, הלכות מילה א:א-ב; ג:א-גרמב"ם - מורה הנבוכים ג:מט ----------Bekius Disclaimer: Note that this is a bekius chavurah - as opposed to an iyun shiur. This afternoon (6/3/21 at YBT) in our Rambam Bekius chavurah we finished the chapter in Hilchos Deios comprised of the Rambam's health guidelines. Although we encountered far more outdated statements this time compared to last time, we also encountered more enduring truths and insights into the Torah's approach to health. All in all, I definitely found it worthwhile to go through this chapter, and I think we were right not to skip it.----------מקורות:רמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות דעות פרק ד ----------Bekius Disclaimer: Note that this is a bekius chavurah - as opposed to an iyun shiur. This afternoon (6/1/21 at YBT) in our Rambam Bekius chavurah we began learning a chapter that some would have preferred to skip. Although we acknowledged that there are many outdated elements of the Rambam's health guidelines, our goal was to see how much is still relevant, and what insight these principles have to offer for our avodas Hashem. This afternoon (5/31/21 at YBT) in our Rambam Bekius chavurah we started and finished Hilchos Deios Chapter 3 - arguably the most important chapter in all of Hilchos Deios, insofar as it outlines what the Torah holds ought to be the purpose of all of our actions. This afternoon (5/27/21 at YBT) in our Rambam Bekius chavurah we finally finished Hilchos Deios Chapter 2! The penultimate halacha followed the pattern of the previous paragraphs in that it clarified what would otherwise be a difficult deah to understand, but the final paragraph seemed to just be miscellaneous deios guidelines. We understood what we could, then noticed that he continues aspects of this topic at the beginning of Chapter 3. Yesterday we learned the Rambam's strict view that "even a single word of pitui (seduction) and geneivas daas (trickery) is prohibited." We wondered what the Rambam would say about the classic cases when one is permitted to lie, and were puzzled by the omission of such cases from these halachos, and from Hilchos Deios in general. This afternoon (5/25/21 at YBT) in our Rambam Bekius chavurah we focused on the surprising place where the Rambam codifies these cases: in the laws of lost objects (shout out to David Fried for directing me to the source). Our goal was not to understand why these cases were exceptions, but to understand how these cases do not contradict or undermine what the Rambam wrote in Hilchos Deios 2:6. I believe we succeeded in answering that question.----------מקורות:רמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות דעות ב:ורמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר נזקים, הלכות גזילה ואבידה יד:יב-יג ----------Bekius Disclaimer: Note that this is a bekius chavurah - as opposed to an iyun shiur. This afternoon (5/24/21 at YBT) in our Rambam Bekius chavurah we had yet another workout trying to work out what the Rambam was saying in his halachos about divrei chalakos u'pitui (words of smoothtalking and seduction), achas ba'peh v'achas ba'leiv (duplicity), and geneivas daas (trickery). This proved to be quite the Rubik's cube of terminology. By the end, we think we got it. This afternoon (5/21/21 at YBT) we resumed our Rambam Bekius chavurah after a week's hiatus. We focused on the last two paragraphs in the Rambam about the deah of silence, and arrived at some nice ideas. (FYI, the title of this shiur is a joke based on something we said in the shiur itself.) We started working on 2:6, about geneivas daas (trickery), pitui (seduction), and echad ba'peh v'echad ba'lev (lack of integrity), but we'll have to revisit that topic next time.----------מקורות:רמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות דעות ב:ד-וEpictetus, Discourses 4.1.128b-129a ----------Bekius Disclaimer: Note that this is a bekius chavurah - as opposed to an iyun shiur. This afternoon (5/13/21 at YBT) in our Rambam Bekius chavurah we INTENDED to finish the next two paragraphs about silence. We began, as usual, by reviewing what we did last time. I even recorded a 60-second recap yesterday to make sure that we'd review efficiently. What ended up happening instead? Basically, we ended up tackling a bunch of fundamental questions that we had raised earlier, and - using silence as our test-case - we refined and overhauled our understanding of the whole system of Hilchos Deios. You can plan how shiur is going to go, but ultimately, the learning will take you wherever it wants. I'm happy with how things turned out, and I think the other guys are as well.----------מקורות:רמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות דעות ב:דרמב"ם - ספר המצוות, השורש התשיעי ----------Bekius Disclaimer: Note that this is a bekius chavurah - as opposed to an iyun shiur. This afternoon (5/12/21 at YBT) in our Rambam Bekius chavurah we set out to understand the Rambam's "silent treatment" ... or "treatment of silence." We wasted no time in getting our hands dirty, delving into questions major and minor. It was a real workout, but a very productive discussion which ended up clarifying our understanding of some of the very basic principles of Hilchos Deios that we've been discussing for weeks. Tomorrow will be the last day we spend on these halachos about silence before we break for Shavuos.----------מקורות:רמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות דעות ב:דרמב"ם - פירוש המשניות, אבות א:יז ----------Bekius Disclaimer: Note that this is a bekius chavurah - as opposed to an iyun shiur. This afternoon (5/11/21 at YBT) in our Rambam Bekius chavurah we attempted to explain the remaining statements about anger in 2:3, and I think we did a decent job. We continued with the halachos about silence, and since we couldn't figure out how those halachos flowed from the previous ones or how they fit into the perek, we decided to just read the rest of the perek in its entirety, in order to get a birdseye view, with the intent of coming back to it tomorrow to analyze it more in-depth.----------מקורות:רמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות דעות ב:ג-זSeneca: Consolation of Helvia ----------Bekius Disclaimer: Note that this is a bekius chavurah - as opposed to an iyun shiur. This afternoon (5/10/21 at YBT) in our Rambam Bekius chavurah we finally managed (thanks to the footnote guy, and with Hashem's help, of course) to finally understand how and in what sense haughtiness and anger are exceptions to the "middle path" rule. Additionally, we were able to explain a number of the statements cited by the Rambam about the evils of haughtiness and anger. Tomorrow we'll try to wrap this up and move on to the other specific deios which the Rambam discusses in this perek.----------מקורות:רמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות דעות ב:גAristotle: Rhetoric 2:2----------Bekius Disclaimer: Note that this is a bekius chavurah - as opposed to an iyun shiur. This afternoon (5/6/21 at YBT) in our Rambam Bekius chavurah we had one goal: to finish READING the exceptions to the Rambam's rule of the middle path. We had to actively fight against the impulse to start analyzing in-depth in order to make sure that we finished. We did permit ourselves to raise questions, but we tried to keep our speculations about answers to a minimum until we made sure that we had gotten all of the facts. And guess what? We succeeded! We'll see where we pick up next week, after the dust has had some time to settle.----------מקורות:רמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות דעות ב:ג ----------Bekius Disclaimer: Note that this is a bekius chavurah - as opposed to an iyun shiur. This afternoon (5/5/21 at YBT) in our Rambam Bekius chavurah we took another couple of baby steps in our understanding of Hilchos Deios. We started reading about the two exceptions to the middle path rule, but decided after reading the first one that we'd use the exception to understand the rule itself. This led to a protracted discussion about what makes the middle path "good," as preparation for understanding why the extremes are good in the cases of the exception. After much hairsplitting and terminology crunching, we had a breakthrough, which answered an earlier question about the Rambam's definitions of chacham and chasid. Although we didn't tie up all the loose ends, we definitely had a productive analysis. (Should we change the title to Rambam b'Iyun? I don't even know anymore.)----------מקורות:רמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות דעות ב:ג ----------Bekius Disclaimer: Note that this is a bekius chavurah - as opposed to an iyun shiur. This afternoon (5/4/21 at YBT) in our Rambam Bekius chavurah we attempted to answer some of the questions we raised last Thursday while making sure we learned at least a couple more halachos. This afternoon (4/29/21 at YBT) in our Rambam Bekius chavurah we only made it through one halacha, but we covered a lot in terms of our analysis. Broadly speaking our goal was to understand the Rambam's terminology in Hilchos Deios. Specifically, we wanted to understand the differences between different types of deios problems, and we also wanted to understand why he calls them "deios" instead of just "middos." Although we didn't arrive at answers for either issue, it was a very good discussion.----------מקורות:רמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות דעות ב:א----------Bekius Disclaimer: Note that this is a bekius chavurah - as opposed to an iyun shiur. This afternoon (4/28/21 at YBT) in our Rambam Bekius chavurah we finished the first chapter of Hilchos Deios. Here the Rambam introduces us to the concept of "the middle path" (or "the middle deah"), and formulates the mitzvah of ve'halachta bi'drachav in those very terms. There were a number of questions we raised and couldn't answer, some having to do with terminology, others having to do with core concepts, and others which we couldn't classify. Tomorrow we plan on reading the Rambam's presentation of this material in Shemoneh Perakim to see if that helps us clarify things. ----------מקורות:רמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות דעות א:ד-ז----------Bekius Disclaimer: Note that this is a bekius chavurah - as opposed to an iyun shiur. This afternoon (4/27/21 at YBT) in our Rambam Bekius chavurah we began a new section: Hilchos Deios! As usual, we began with by reading the Rambam's formulation of the mitzvah in the Sefer ha'Mitzvos and in the minyan ha'mitzvos in the Introduction to the Mishneh Torah, and then we began the halachos with the koseres. Today's learning revolved around some basic questions: What are "deios"? Why does the Rambam call them that? How do we make sense of his seemingly inconsistent terminology? We ended today with the Rambam's introduction of the famous "middle path," which (בג"ה) we will continue with tomorrow.----------מקורות:רמב"ם - ספר המצוות, עשה חרמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות דעות א:א-ג ----------Bekius Disclaimer: Note that this is a bekius chavurah - as opposed to an iyun shiur. WARNING: since we were only learning this for the Rambam's new points, I sped-read and didn't translate anything that the Rambam already covered in the Mishneh Torah. Also, we wanted to finish this topic today so that we can start Hilchos Deios next week, AND because this was our 100th session of our Rambam Bekius chavurah, and we wanted to conclude Hilchos Yesodei ha'Torah in its entirety on an even number! ;)----------מקורות:רמב"ם - פירוש המשניות, הקדמה למשנה----------Bekius Disclaimer: Note that this is a bekius chavurah - as opposed to an iyun shiur. This afternoon (4/15/21 at YBT) in our Rambam Bekius chavurah we started and finished the eighth chapter of Hilchos Yesodei ha'Torah, which focused on the topic of the relationship between the event at Sinai and Moshe's nevuah. In many ways, this was an extension of the topics covered in the previous chapter, especially because nevuas Moshe is the basis for our acceptance of all other neviim. Anytime the topic of Torah mi'Sinai comes up it is inevitable that questions will be raised without immediate answers. But this is a BEKIUS shiur, and our primary goal is to familiarize ourselves with the text and understand it on a basic level - not to answer every single question. That's what iyun is for.----------מקורות: רמב"ם - משנה תורה, ספר המדע, הלכות יסודי התורה פירק ח ----------Bekius Disclaimer: Note that this is a bekius chavurah - as opposed to an iyun shiur. This afternoon (4/14/21 at YBT) in our Rambam Bekius chavurah we finished the seventh chapter of Hilchos Yesodei ha'Torah. First we learned the halachos about the unique nevuah of Moshe Rabbeinu, which we found surprisingly confusing. We took a brief detour to the first half of the Rambam's formulation of the 8th ikkar in the Peirush ha'Mishnayos, simply to reassure ourselves of the basis of our confusion. We then moved on and completed the halachos about regular neviim. Next time we'll begin Chapter 8.----------מקורות: רמב"ם - משנה תורה, ספר המדע, הלכות יסודי התורה ז:ו-זרמב"ם - פירוש המשניות, סנהדרין, הקדמה לפרק חלק ----------Bekius Disclaimer: Note that this is a bekius chavurah - as opposed to an iyun shiur. This afternoon (4/13/21 at YBT) in our Rambam Bekius chavurah we continued from where we left off last time. The Rambam begins describing the process of standard nevuah. He pauses to contrast this with the nevuah of Moshe Rabbeinu. We decided at that point to read his formulation of the seventh ikkar in the Peirush ha'Mishnayos, and since I had to end a few minutes early today, we stopped there. Next time we'll pick up with the Rambam's comparison of standard nevuah to nevuas Moshe Rabbeinu in the Mishneh Torah.----------מקורות: רמב"ם - משנה תורה, ספר המדע, הלכות יסודי התורה ז:ב-הרמב"ם - פירוש המשניות, סנהדרין, הקדמה לפרק חלק ----------Bekius Disclaimer: Note that this is a bekius chavurah - as opposed to an iyun shiur. This afternoon (4/12/21 at YBT) in our Rambam Bekius chavurah we had an unprecedented accomplishment: we set out to review what we did last time (the three paragraphs which comprise 7:1) and we didn't even complete the review (we only covered two paragraphs)! I refer to this as an "accomplishment" because we achieved a level of clarity far beyond what we had last time, thanks to a special guest. Next time we'll begin with the third paragraph of 7:1 and see how far we get from there.----------מקורות: רמב"ם - משנה תורה, ספר המדע, הלכות יסודי התורה ז:א ----------Bekius Disclaimer: Note that this is a bekius chavurah - as opposed to an iyun shiur. This afternoon (4/8/21 at YBT) in our Rambam Bekius chavurah we began the next topic in Hilchos Yesodei ha'Torah: nevuah. We started off by trying to guess what the Rambam included in his formulation of the ikkar of nevuah. We then read his definition of that ikkar in his Intro to Perek Chelek and tried to make sense of what he was saying. We ended off by reading his definition of nevuah, his description of neviim, and his account of the process of getting nevuah. Suffice it to say, there is a LOT to unpack here! We did manage to explain some of it, but we're definitely going to have to revisit it next week and see what we can decipher. One thing is for certain: if we can't understand the halachos of nevuah, there's no way we can become neviim!----------מקורות: רמב"ם - פירוש המשניות, סנהדרין, הקדמה לפרק חלקרמב"ם - משנה תורה, ספר המדע, הלכות יסודי התורה ז:א ----------Bekius Disclaimer: Note that this is a bekius chavurah - as opposed to an iyun shiur. This afternoon (4/6/21 at YBT) in our Rambam Bekius chavurah we began a side-topic: the Omer. The Rambam begins with the mussafim of Rosh Chodesh and Pesach. We took a brief moment to discuss ALL the mussafim. The Rambam then goes on to recount the procedure for harvesting the Omer, and the measures taken to refute the view of the Tzedukim.----------מקורות: רמב"ם - משנה תורה, ספר עבודה, הלכות תמידין ומוספין ז:א-יא ----------Bekius Disclaimer: Note that this is a bekius chavurah - as opposed to an iyun shiur. This afternoon (4/7/21 at YBT) in our Rambam Bekius chavurah we concluded our side-topic of "the Omer." Today we learned about the procedure for preparing and bringing the Minchas ha'Omer in the Mikdash, then we learned some of the halachos regarding the prohibition to harvest produce before the bringing of the Omer, and we concluded with the Rambam's halachos of counting the Omer. ----------מקורות: רמב"ם - משנה תורה, ספר עבודה, הלכות תמידין ומוספין ז:יב-כה ----------Bekius Disclaimer: Note that this is a bekius chavurah - as opposed to an iyun shiur. This afternoon (3/18/21 at YBT) in our Rambam Bekius chavurah we learned through another shiur from The Kuntress (Sevaros b'Mishneh Torah le'ha'Rambam) on a major problem with the berachos we make on matzah, maror, and the korban Pesach - namely, they violate the Rambam's own rules about how to formulate our berachos on mitzvos!
