Send me a text!Length: 57 minutesSynopsis: Tonight (5/28/25), in our Wednesday night Tehilim shiur, we concluded our experimental learn-through of Sforno and R' Elia di Nola on our perek. We began by clarifying Sforno's nuanced take on Torah u'Mada, then explored his view of the role Moshiach will play in educating humanity. We wrapped up with a summary of the perek's purpose, the flow of the four Bnei Korach maskilim we've studied over the past few months, and an operational definition of what a maskil is. This three-part series may not have been our typical Tehilim fare, but I certainly found it interesting, and I hope you did too!-----מקורות:תהלים פרק מהספורנור' אליה די נולהשבת דף קמה עמוד ב - קמו עמוד א-----The Torah content from now through Isru Chag Shavuos is sponsored by Rabbi Chaim and Sara Weiss in honor of the yahrzeit of our beloved rebbi, Rabbi Morton Moskowitz zt"l (on the 28th of Iyyar). After a recap and a re-pitch of the perek, we continued on, making past the pivot point into the next section. It was ... interesting! We definitely gained some ideas about how to engage in debate, as well as a unique model of Torah u'Mada that I've never seen before, but which resonates with me. The Gemara in Sanhedrin tells us that David HaMelech asked Hashem why, in the Amidah , we say אלוקי אברהם, אלוקי יצחק, ואלוקי יעקב . Hashem responded that it is because the Avot were tested and passed their tests. We see from here that tests make a person great in this world. The Midrash in Tehillim says that Hashem does not elevate a person to a high position until He first tests him. The pasuk states that Hashem tested the Jewish people in the desert " להטיבך באחריתך " The Sforno explains that Hashem wanted to elevate Bnei Yisrael to become even greater than the angels who serve Him, and that is why He tested them. Many times, Hashem has gifts waiting for a person, and by passing a test, they become worthy of receiving them. A well-known story illustrates this concept: Rashi's father, Rabbi Yitzchak, once found a rare diamond and went to sell it to a local jeweler. The jeweler didn't have enough money to purchase such a valuable stone and suggested that the bishop buy it instead. The bishop had been searching for such a diamond to place on his cross. He offered an enormous sum of money for it. When Rabbi Yitzchak heard the purpose of the purchase, he refused to sell the diamond. However, he realized that if he didn't sell it, it would likely be taken from him by force. So, instead, he threw it into the ocean. That night, he was told in a dream that because of this great sacrifice, he would be blessed with a son whose light would outshine all the precious stones in the world, and whose Torah would illuminate generations to come. The following year, he had a son, whom he named Shlomo. He grew to become the towering sage known as Rashi. A man told me a personal story that took place more than 30 years ago: After high school, he traveled to Israel, where he became religious. He returned for a second year and planned to go back for a third. That summer, he was in his hometown making the final arrangements for his return. On the last day before his flight, on the way to the airport, he stopped at a convenience store to buy a drink and some snacks. While in the store, he remembered that he had purchased a lottery ticket and decided to check the numbers on the store's machine. As soon as he inserted the ticket, red sirens went off across the store. Startled, he asked what was happening. The store manager told him, "That means you won. You matched at least five numbers—possibly six." Shocked, he asked how much he had won. The manager replied, "It could be anywhere from $500,000 to several million dollars." He was stunned. For a moment, he paused to take it all in. But then, fear set in. If he had won millions, would he still go back to yeshiva ? Would this change his life in ways he didn't want? He made a firm decision: instead of checking the numbers immediately, he would first board his flight to Israel. Once he was settled back in yeshiva , he would check the ticket and see how much he had won. Early the next morning, he arrived in Israel and went straight to the yeshiva building. He placed his jacket in the same spot where he had always hung it for the past two years and then went to the Kotel to pray Shacharit . When he returned, his jacket was gone. His lottery ticket was in the zipper pocket. He had not told anyone about the ticket. He searched the entire yeshiva , but the jacket was never found. To this day, he has no idea how much he would have won. Instead of millions of dollars, Hashem gave him something far greater—he remained in yeshiva for several more years, married a bat talmid chacham , and raised a family of outstanding talmidei chachamim with sterling Midot. It is clear that the money was not meant for him, but the test most certainly was. Hashem had given him an extraordinary nisayon . And heroically, he chose to return to Israel, fearing that the money would steer him away from the path he had chosen. Hashem blessed him in ways far beyond anything money could buy. Life's tests can be challenging, but they are designed to lift us up and make us great.

Rabbi Dunner draws a fascinating parallel between Joseph's dramatic reconciliation with his brothers in Parshat Vayigash and post-World War II leadership. True leadership balances toughness with vision—turning enemies into allies rather than crushing them. With insights from Ramban and Sforno, Rabbi Dunner unpacks Joseph's strategy of redemption over revenge, showing that the best way to win is making sure everyone shares in the victory.
Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!Length: 1 hour 37 minutesSynopsis: This morning's YBT Sunday shiur (11/3/24) was a bit different than usual, focusing more on reading and discussing sources than in-depth analysis. This was intentional, since this shiur was intended to be a setup for the REAL shiur. My original goal was to present Sforno's view that the nachash in Gan Eden represents the yetzer ha'ra. However, I realized two preliminary issues needed to be addressed: (a) clarifying Sforno's understanding of the tzelem elohim, and (b) addressing a shiur by my Rosh ha'Yeshiva, Rabbi Chait, who argues that allegorizing the nachash is an illegitimate, heretical, and dangerous approach. In this shiur, I aim to tackle both points, setting the stage (God willing) for Part 2, where we'll explore Sforno's view of the nachash in Gan Eden and the aftermath of the cheit.-----מקורות:Rabbi Israel Chait, "The Snake" (C107-108)אברבנאל - הקדמה לבראשית פרק באבן עזרא - פירוש א' בראשית ג:א; פירוש ב' בראשית ג:כארמב"ם - מורה הנבוכים ב:כט-לספורנו - בראשית א:כו-כז; ב:ז-ט,טוספורנו - אור עמים טד:נ-נא-----This week's Torah content is sponsored by Ayala, who says, "Thank you, Rabbi Schneeweiss, for the countless Torah and life insights you share and, specifically, for making the world of chochmah more accessible through your Mishlei shiurim."-----If you've gained from what you've learned here, please consider contributing to my Patreon at www.patreon.com/rabbischneeweiss. Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!Length: 1 hour 39 minutesSynopsis: Tonight (6/6/24), in our Thursday night Pirkei Avos shiur for women, we continued our analysis of the mishnah about deriving worldly benefit from words of Torah. After a VERY brief review of the Rambam, to which Parts 1 and 2 were devoted, we examined the opposition as formulated by two Rishonim. Sforno provided a clean, straightforward argument which demonstrated a completely different framework from the Rambam's. Rashbatz, in a lengthy commentary on or mishnah and an equally lengthy responsum (neither of which we read in its entirety), seemed to address the Rambam head-on. Not only did he provide a counterargument, but he explained the sources cited by the Rambam to support his view and marshaled dozens if statements from Chazal to support his position. We ended by attempting to define this three-way machlokess, and while we didn't succeed in arriving at a clear answer, we definitely felt like we had a nice first step.-----מקורות:אבות ד:הרמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות תלמוד תורה ג:יLenn E. Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!Length: 1 hour 33 minutesSynopsis: Tonight (5/30/24), in our Thursday night Pirkei Avos shiur for women, we continued our analysis of the mishnah through the eyes of the Rambam. We began with a VERY in-depth review of everything we covered last time (if you want to skip the review, start around 30 minutes into the shiur). We then read and discussed several additional sources in other works of the Rambam where he discusses this, focusing on his treatment in the Mishneh Torah. We concluded by attempting to analyze the five ways in which the Rambam views this practice as harmful. Next time (בג"ה), we'll take another crack at figuring that out, and then take up the opposing view, led by Sforno and Rashbatz. Embark on a transformative exploration of remorse and redemption as we navigate the tumultuous moral landscape left in the wake of the golden calf. The moment Moses descended Sinai only to shatter the tablets in response to the Israelites' idolatry, a spiritual low point was etched into our collective history. Together with the esteemed insights of Sforno and the tapestry of generational atonement that followed, we dissect the role of guilt and the profound potential for spiritual growth hidden within its embrace. As this sin's shadow looms across time, we consider the weight of our actions and the heart's capacity for remorse, dissecting how our missteps might not just be failures but signposts for our path ahead.Allow the sting of guilt to open your eyes to a path of self-improvement like physical pain warns and protects us from harm. The poignant tale of Cain and Abel serves as a backdrop to our conversation, highlighting our responsibility to rise from our downfalls with purpose and determination. Drawing from the wisdom of ancient narratives and the concept of "rejoicing in destruction," we unpack the delicate balance between succumbing to guilt and leveraging it for positive transformation. This episode isn't just a contemplation of what has been; it's a call to action, an invitation to let the discomfort of our errors fuel our journey toward a more righteous tomorrow.Support the show------------------Check out our other Torah Podcasts and content! Length: 1 hour 26 minutesSynopsis: This evening (2/8/24), in our Thursday night Pirkei Avos shiur for women, we spent a second night analyzing Ben Azzai's teaching about mitzvos and aveiros. After reviewing our questions and the basic ideas we came up with last time, we learned the Rambam's approach, followed by the Sforno's. Both were difficult, but I'm happy with what we came up with. Length: 1 hour 35 minutesSynopsis: This YBT Sunday Shiur (10/23/23) is an updated version of a shiur I gave two years ago (10/23/21), the goal of which is to understand each and every step in Avraham's dialogue with Hashem about the fate of Sedom as explained by Sforno, and to extrapolate ideas about God's righteousness and justice. We concluded by reflecting on the implications and applications of these insights to the present war with Hamas.-----מקורות:בראשית יא:ה; יג:יג; יד:ב; יח:טז-לגיחזקאל טז:מטספורנו - בראשית יא:ה; יח:טז-לג עם הערות הרב יהודה קופרמן זצ"לשיעורי ר' עובדיה ספורנו
Length: 1 hour 12 minutesSynopsis: This morning (10/12/23), in our first Machshavah Lab (for Women) Q&A of the year, we took up six questions: (1) What are the different ways people "cry out" to Hashem when in dire straits? (2) What can we do when we feel so powerless in situations of crisis like this? (3) What do we mean when we say "in the Name of Hashem" or "for His Name's sake"? (4) Practically speaking, how do we go about doing teshuvah in response to a catastrophe? (5) How do we reckon with the civilian deaths in Gaza? (6) How do we make sense of Hamas's evil? [This last question and most of the answer were not recorded.]The shiur I referenced in the Q&A regarding Question #5 can be found here; the topic starts at 7:40. Why Did Hashem Redeem Us From Egypt? Shiur from Rabbi Elimelech Kohn Ztl on Discussed: Lessons we can learn from Moshe Rabeinu and R' Yisrael Salanter on their last day of life. The Sforno explains what the Pasuk means that Teshuva is not in the heavens nor in a distant land. What was special about Reuven that Chazal say he was the first person to perform Teshuva; What about Adom, Kayin, and others who also did Teshuva?
Length: 1 hour 10 minutesSynopsis: This evening (9/6/23), in our first Wednesday night Tehilim shiur of the 2023-2024 season, we decided to revisit the same perek we learned in Elul of last year - this time, through one of my new favorite commentators whose name nobody will have heard of: R' Elia di Nola, student of the Sforno. Because we learned the perek so recently, we deviated from our usual procedure. We relied on the translation and questions from last time, and we didn't attempt to figure out the main idea on our own, but instead, we jumped right into the commentary. We read and translated the whole thing and set up the main questions, which we'll attempt to answer next time.If you prefer a slower and more organic analysis, I recommend checking out the three-part shiur on this perek from September 2022.-----מקורות:תהלים פרק כזספורנושיעורי ר' עובדיה ספורנורש"י - גמרא סוכה דף נב עמוד א-ב:רמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות תשובה ד:א; ו:הAristotle, Metaphysics 1:1רש"י - דברים ג:כג-----The Torah Content for the month of Elul has been sponsored anonymously in loving memory of Henya bas Tzirel - a mother who cared deeply about her children's engagement with Judaism. -----If you've gained from what you've learned here, please consider contributing to my Patreon at www.patreon.com/rabbischneeweiss. Rashi and Sforno
Length: 1 hour 15 minutesSynopsis: This morning (6/9/23), in our Machshavah Lab series for women, we attempted to answer as many of the questions we raised last time as possible. This time we focused on the approach of the Ralbag - well, at least, the approach we managed to tease out of the few comments where addressed our questions. What emerged was a more nuanced view of portrait of the nazir than what many of us previously knew. I had PLANNED to also give shiur on the Sforno's approach, but decided to leave that for another time (בג"ה)!And with that, the last Machshavah Lab shiur is in the books! Length: 1 hour 35 minutesSynopsis: As I mention in the introductory disclaimer for the shiur I gave this morning (3/31/23) in our Machshavah Lab series for women, I wasn't sure how this shiur would turn out. At best, it could yield some earthshattering insight into the four cups and how we relate to them; at worst, it would just be an overview/review of basic ideas and sources about the four cups. It ended up being closer to the latter, though we definitely picked up some insights along the way ... just not earthshattering chiddushim. The focus of the shiur was on the four explanations of the four cups provided in the Talmud Yerushalmi. We did our best to understand all four, and I think we got at least three, if not three-and-a-half. If you're looking for an overview of this mitzvah and/or some fun questions to think about, then you'll find value in this shiur.-----מקורות:משנה – פסחים י:א, דף צט עמוד ב (גירסת הרמב"ם)בבלי פסחים דף קיז עמוד ברי"ף, רשב"ם, ומאירי שםירושלמי פסחים י:א:זפני משה שםמאירי פסחים דף צט עמוד בתורה תמימה שמות ו:ו הערה הבראשית מ:י-יגבראשית רבה פח:התרגום יונתן - בראשית מ:יבבראשית טו:יבבראשית רבה שםKulp, Origins of the Seder – Currents in Biblical Research 4.1 (2005) pp.112-113,117-118ירמיהו כה:טו-כו; נא:ז-ידתהלים יא; עהרש"י - איכה ד:כארמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר זמנים, הלכות חמץ ומצה ז:ו-ז,ט-ייד פשוטה ז:טResources Mentioned:Five Types of Dvar TorahAlHaTorah's Haggadah GedolahAlHaTorah's Seder Topics"Hashem Decreed the Egyptian Slavery?! Length: 1 hour 35 minutesSynopsis: This evening (3/23/23), in lieu of our Thursday Night Pirkei Avos shiur, we did a Chumash Exploration shiur on Sforno's view that the Egyptian exile was NOT decreed by Hashem, but was entirely our fault, and could have been avoided. We read and discussed Sforno's commentary on the first fourteen pesukim of Sefer Shemos and the three pesukim of the Bris Bein ha'Besarim, along with the newly published notes taken by a student of the Sforno on his rebbi's Chumash shiurim. Rabbi Feiner shiurim
Length: 1 hour 6 minutesSynopsis: This evening (3/8/23), in our Wednesday night Tefilah shiur, we might have bitten off more than we could chew. Our goal was to understand the opening phrase in Shema Koleinu. To do this, we analyzed Shemos 2:23-25 with Sforno's commentary AND the recently published alternative Sforno commentary on AlHaTorah. What made this ambitious is that we ALSO read Sforno's commentaries on nearly all the pesukim he cites - a task we attempted in a Chumash shiur I gave last year. This was a LOT of Sforno. Did we emerge with an understanding of the line from Shema Koleinu? ... Kind of. We definitely took a few steps, but there remains work to be done. We shall see what develops in the meantime.-----Related Rabbi Schneeweiss Content:3/23/22: Why Did Hashem Redeem Us From Egypt? This evening (12/8/22), in our Thursday Night Pirkei Avos shiur, we learned a very challenging mishnah which partially overlaps with a previous mishnah in Avos and ALSO partially overlaps with a Gemara in Berachos. Synopsis: I don't know about anyone else, but I have been FASCINATED with OpenAI GPT – the latest incarnation of an artificial intelligence chatbot which (for now) is freely available for the public at large. I've been equally parts amazed and horrified by its capabilities and their implications, despite never being interested in AI in the past. Since I'm still in the “honeymoon phase” of this interest, I figured I'd record my initial thoughts. I didn't have much of a game plan going into this episode, but it ended up being a discourse on the Stoic and Jewish conceptions of the soul (as explained by Marcus Aurelius and Sforno, respectively) and a reflection on how the technological progress in AI will prove to be beneficial for our conception of what makes us human. This evening (9/15/22), in our Thursday Night Pirkei Avos shiur, we began by reviewing the facts and questions from last time. After hearing some more approaches from the participants, we learned four commentaries: Rambam, Bartenura, and Rabbeinu Bachya - who all shared an approach - and Sforno, who unlocked our understanding of the main idea, answered all our major questions, and left us with a practical take on this mishnah! ----------מקורות:אבות ג:אאברבנאל - נחלת אבות ג:ארמב"ם - פירוש המשניות אבות ג:אר' עובדיה מברטנורא שםרבינו בחיי שםספורנו שםרמב"ם - מורה הנבוכים ג:נדספורנו - בראשית א:כז----------The Torah content for the first two weeks of yeshiva has been sponsored anonymously. Welcome to Embrace Shabbat. In his sefer Yefei LaLev ( nefesh yetira b'Shabbat , letter 13) , Rabbi Yitzchak Palagi quotes three segulot for a long life: lighting Shabbat candles with olive oil; being מענג את השבת , delighting in Shabbat ( Kav HaChaim, Rav Chaim Palagi), and using wine for Kiddush on Friday night ( Pirkei d'Rebbe Eliezer) . Rabbi Palagi explains the source of these three segulot, based on the Sforno in Parshat Yitro. After listing the first five commandments, the Torah writes: למען יאריכון ימיך , so that you many live a long life . Many ascribe this reward to the last of the commandments: Kibbud Av v'Em. However, the Sforno explains that the reward of a long life is attributed to any of the first five commandments . While it may seem like למען יאריכון ימיך only applies to the last of the five, these commandments all involve kavod Hashem , which is rewarded with אריכות ימים . Therefore, Shemirat Shabbat also has the reward of אריכות ימים ! Furthermore, he quotes Beraishit Rabba (11:4) who says that Rabbi Yishmael bar Rabbi Yosi asked Rebbe why the people in Bavel live for such a long life. Rebbe explained that the people in Chutz LaAretz live in the zechut of Kibbud Shabbat, respecting Shabbat and Yom Tov. This is hinted to in the word שבת , which can be an acronym for שנים בזכותו תרבה , in the merit of Shabbat you will live many years. (Similarly, Sefardim have the custom to say תזכו לשנים רבות during the High Holiday season.) Shabbat also can stand for שנים בעבורו תוסיף , because of Shabbat, you will have years added to your life. While these segulot apply all year long, they are especially relevant during this High Holiday season. At a time that we are pleading with G-d for our lives and are begging to be written in the Book of Life, let us take advantage of this secret to a long life: Shabbat! We can utilize these three segulot to show our respect for Shabbat and kavod Hashem .: Many people make kiddush on Friday night on “Kiddush Wine,” a cheap bottle of sweet wine that you would not serve at a wedding. Until around 30-40 years ago, Jews were not wine connoisseurs; there was just no good Kosher wine available! Now that we have so many options, it is proper to honor Kiddush with a respectable bottle on Friday night. Light Shabbat candles with olive oil. If your wife is insistent on lighting with candles, you shouldn't get into a shalom bayit issue over switching to olive oil, but this is another way to beautify Shabbat. The Arizal teaches that the husband should be the one to set up the Shabbat candles. (The Artscroll Eidut Mizrach siddur includes a prayer for men to say before setting up the candles. That is how important it is!) If a husband would like to take on this segulah , he should tell his wife that he will commit himself to setting up the glasses, buying the oil, and putting in the wicks- there is no extra hassle for the wife! All she needs to do is light them! Delight in Shabbat! There are many ways to be מענג את השבת , whether through learning, sleeping, or eating. Have a wonderful day and Shabbat Shalom.
Avanti a tutta forza portami a REBELSS ….. Parappàppàra
Rabbi Breitowitz shares his insights on the ethics of separating the art from the artist (as in the most recent case with Chaim Walder), the miraculous existence and success of modern-day Israel (the Haredi argument against Zionism vs the argument for post-facto religious Zionism), the purpose of prayer since we can't change God's mind (and the superstitious elements that some Jews use to close the gap e.g. saying a "mystical" formulation for 40 days by the Kotel, etc.), the recent dogmatic "Daas Torah" rejection of metaphoric readings of certain parts in the Torah (e.g. Rambam, Sforno, Radaq, and Ralbag interpreted some or all of the Genesis narrative to be allegorical, Ibn Casspi said the entire book of Yonah was a vision, Rambam said any story mentioning angels is a vision, Chazal believing Iyyov wasn't a real person, etc.), and the hottest topic of late, the Torah view of abortion.

The Seventh Month: Nisan Right in between the 9th and 10th plagues, G-d gives Moshe (Moses) and Aharon (Aaron) the first mitzvah, the first commandment, to the Jewish people as a whole. *record scratch* Wait haven't the Jewish people existed since Avraham (Abraham)? Yes, they have, and even though there were definitely families / clans / groups of Jewish people, we didn't officially become a united nation until the end of our slavery in Mitzrayim (Egypt). With the promise of the Matan Torah (the giving of the Torah) and the promise of the Promised Land, HaEretz HaMuvtachat, all of the families / clans / groups became one - B'nei Yisrael, the children of Israel. Israel being Yaakov (Jacob), the patriarch at the time of the Egyptian slavery. This first mitzvah, of course, is the commandment to sanctify the new moon as the beginning of a new month - to celebrate Rosh Chodesh, the head of the new month, starting with Chodesh Nisan. Right before the final plague, Makkat Bechorot - Death of the First Borns, we get this mitzvah. Directly following this final plague, the Jewish people are set free. Two commentators, Sforno and the Netziv, connect the mitzvah of Rosh Chodesh directly to Yetziat Mitzrayim - the Exodus from Egypt. Sforno emphasizes the fact that as slaves, the Jewish people had no control over their time. They were told when and where to work, when and where to eat, when and where to rest, etc. Rosh Chodesh is a symbol of the autonomy they were now granted as free people, taking back their control by sanctifying the passage of time. Earlier into Moshe's leadership, the Jewish people are reluctant to listen to his message that G-d will free them soon. The Torah tells us this is due to their Kotzer Ruach, their shortness of breath from hard work. Pharaoh kept them working to the point of exhaustion so they didn't have the mental or physical energy to rebell or desire anything more than what their lives held. The Netziv points out that the Jewish people had been living under the control of a foreign nation for so long that they needed something to distinguish themselves when emerging into the free world. The Egyptian society was highly connected to the sun, to the solar calendar. Our connection to the moon and the lunar calendar further removes us from that. There's no one forcing us into labor today, but we easily lose control of our time by submitting to the constant dinging of our phones, computers, TVs, etc. Taking one look at your screen time reminds us of this. We are active in this loss of control though, and there are lots of good, amazing things that we have due to our hyperconnectivity. And for the same reason kashrut (the laws of keeping kosher), our davening (praying) schedule, and our other unique ways of life keep us reminded who we are, Rosh Chodesh is another example of sanctifying the mundane. We make something as bland as the passing of time a ceremony! There are certain brachot and tefillot (blessings and prayers) for Rosh Chodesh and it has a great all around vibe. This evening (3/23/22), in our aptly named "Chumash Exploration," we took up a very basic question: Why did Hashem redeem us from Egypt? Most of us would answer, "Because He said He would in the Bris Bein ha'Besarim (Covenant Between the Parts)." But not Sforno! And even if we look at the pesukim without Sforno, the answer is not simply "because He said He would in the bris." In tonight's shiur we go through the facts, raise the questions and problems, and learn Sforno's overarching approach. We answer all the questions except for one, and it's a big one. We hope to answer that question next time.----------מקורות:שמות ב:כג-כה; ג:ז,ט עם פירוש ספורנובראשית טו:יג-יד; יז:ז עם פירוש ספורנודברים ד:ז עם פירוש ספורנו----------The Torah content for the remainder of Adar II has been sponsored by David Campbell, and is dedicated "in honor of Rabbi Schneeweiss and all those who work to produce a grounded and thoughtful Judaism."----------If you have questions, comments, or feedback, I would love to hear from you! Welcome to Embrace Shabbat. At the end of Parshat Ki Tisa, Moshe Rabbeinu descends from Har Sinai with the second luchot, and his face is shining so brightly that he necessitates a veil to cover it. The next parsha begins with the mitzvah of Shabbat. The Baal HaTurim explains the juxtaposition of these two concepts: every person's face has a markedly different look from the rest of the week- it has a special shine. One of the explanations given for why Moshe Rabbeinu's face shone is because the crowns that were removed from the Jewish people were given to Moshe. The Arizal teaches that every Friday night, the Jewish people are atoned from their sin and Moshe Rabbeinu then returns the crowns to them. ישמח משה במתנת חלקו - Moshe is happy because he can give up his portion and transfer the shine to the Jewish people. The paragraph of ישמח משה continues: וּשְׁנֵי לֻחות אֲבָנִים הורִיד בְּיָדו , He carried down two tablets of stone in his hands. There is a connection between Moshe Rabbeinu carrying down the luchot and his joy in giving away his special shine. At the end of Parshat Mishpatim, the Sforno questions the significance of the 40 days and nights that Moshe spent on Har Sinai. The number 40 has great significance throughout the Torah. It represents the concept of renewal and creation. For example, the Gemara teaches that it takes 40 days for an embryo to be fully formed in its mother's womb. Additionally, there are 40 days between Rosh Chodesh Elul and Yom Kippur, signifying the new creation of Teshuva. (The Kaf HaChaim says that each word in אני לדודי ודודי לי ends in a י , which represents the 40 days that we need in order to create Yom Kippur.) The Seforno continues that Moshe Rabbeinu's face shining is another indication that a new creation happened at Har Sinai; when a person learns Torah, they become a new creation. The same is true of Shabbat, when a person becomes a new creation. Our sins are forgiven on Friday night and therefore the shine returns because each person is renewed. It is for this reason that our tefillot on Shabbat include a discussion of Matan Torah and the shine that returns. Shabbat is a time to learn Torah because in order to unleash this new “you”, a person must learn Torah. פני שבת נקבלה - we are going to accept the “face” of Shabbat because every person receives a new face on Shabbat. For example, whereas a person must generally invite a new face, פנים חדשות , to Sheva Brachot, on Shabbat, פנים חדשות is not necessary because Shabbat IS the פנים חדשות . On a simple level, Shabbat is the “new guest” that is invited to Sheva Brachot. However, on a deeper level, everyone's face is a new face on Shabbat because it has that special shine. The following two stories demonstrate this idea: When Rav Wolbe first came to the Mir Yeshiva in Europe, he thought that there were two mashgichim- one for Shabbat and one for the weekdays- because Rav Yeruchem Levovitz's face was noticeably different on Shabbat. Rav Yaakov Kaminetsky z”l was a patient of my father. (As an aside, my father once walked in the waiting room of his dermatology office in Money and saw Rav Yaakov Kaminetsky sitting there. My father told the secretary that if she ever sees the Rabbi sitting in the waiting room, she must call him in right away. Rav Yaakov didn't want to use his rabbinical prestige to skip the line; he chose to wait like everyone else.) One Shabbos, my father saw Rav Yaakov Kaminetsky at a Kiddush. He approached to greet the Rav, but Rav Yaakov didn't recognize my father. My father introduced himself and Rav Yaakov said, “I apologize, but today is Shabbat and you don't look the same on Shabbat. Your face on Shabbat is not like your face on the weekdays.” We can be zoche to that special face of Shabbat. B'ezrat Hashem, פני שבת נקבלה , we will not only appreciate our shining face on Shabbat, but the fact that it indicates our ability to change through Torah learning on Shabbat. Have a Shabbat Shalom.
This morning (1/7/22), in our aptly named "Chumash Exploration," we took up two very basic questions: (1) Who carried out the Plague of the Firstborn? (2) What is the purpose of the Korban Pesach? The average Jew who has attended Pesach sedarim would probably have ready answers to both of these questions. That's where Sforno comes in. His commentary on the events of the night of the 15th of Nisan flips our understanding on its head, and in doing so, paves the way for a revolutionary new understanding. This morning (12/31/21), in our "Machshavah Lab" series for women, we had a SURPRISE shiur on the parashah! (It was a "surprise" in the sense that I didn't prepare a shiur. This began as a Q&A and turned into a shiur.) The question was: "What's the deal with Hashem hardening Paroh's heart?" After showing off AlHaTorah's excellent "topics" feature and reading Neima Novetsky's setup of the questions, we focused on two explanations: Rambam and Sforno. I chose these two because they are near-exact opposites in their approaches. We spent the bulk of the time on the Rambam's approach, then contrasted it with Sforno, after which I explained why I personally prefer Sforno's approach because it's more in line with how Hashem operates (according to my understanding), but am still open to readings of the Rambam which harmonize his view with my understanding of Hashem's ways. Please feel free to leave your questions, insights, and feedback in the comments!----------This week's Torah content has been sponsored by Albert Hanan and Justin Coskey in honor of Aryel's and Batya's wedding.----------מקורות:https://alhatorah.org/Hardened_Hearts/1/enרמב"ם - פירוש המשניות, שמונה פרקים, פרק חרמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות תשובה ה:ב; ו:א-דרמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות יסודי התורה י:דספורנו - שמות ד:כג; ז:ג-ד----------If you've gained from what you've learned here, please consider contributing to my Patreon at www.patreon.com/rabbischneeweiss. Synopsis: Rufus taught “The human being is born with an inclination toward virtue.” Would Judaism agree? In today's episode we take a look at the Sforno's revolutionary interpretation of a familiar statement from Chazal (which was already preempted by the Rambam), which sheds a new light on how Hashem helps us in the battle against the yetzer ha'ra on a daily basis. This week's Torah content has been sponsored anonymously for the continued recovery of Rabbi Moskowitz. This morning (10/29/21), in our "Machshavah Lab" series for women, we had two objectives: (1) to examine the permissibility of Eliezer's actions in this week's parashah in light of the Torah prohibition of nichush (divination/omen-reading), and (2) to clarify on a theoretical level the distinction between permissible and prohibited ways of utilizing signs. We examined this topic in light of the Gemara which is the source of these halachos, which we analyzed according to five Rishonim: Rambam, Raavad (including Rashi and Tosafos), Sforno, Radak, and the Ran. Our most difficult challenge was attempting to make sense of R' Yochanan's actions in the Gemara, which - according to the Rambam - would seem to be both prohibited and utterly foolish.----------This week's Torah content has been sponsored by R.R. in appreciation for all the growth and insight that she has gained from these shiurim. Every year when we read about Sedom and Amorah, I can't help but feel like I'm watching a "reverse auction," in which Avraham Avinu quantitatively "bargains" for the lowest number of tzadikim that Hashem would be willing to save. This morning (10/22/21), in our "Machshavah Lab" series for women, we learn through Sforno's commentary which sheds an entirely new light on the dialogue. Sforno shows how each of Avraham's questions is conceptually unique and each of Hashem's answers provides Avraham with a real insight into Hashem's derech of tzedakah and mishpat. Most importantly, we learn that the episode of Sedom and Amorah has practical implications for us, as the descendants of Avraham.----------Today's Torah content has been sponsored by someone who makes regular contributions, not only to the Torah content fund, but also to my shiurim.----------מקורות:בראשית יג:יג; יד:ב; יח:טז-לגיחזקאל טז:מטספורנו - בראשית יח:טז-לג עם הערות הרב יהודה קופרמן זצ"ל----------If you have questions, comments, or feedback, I would love to hear from you! What is Rosh Chodesh? Why does Hashem need atonement? Beautiful Sforno and Tzemach Tzedek
Shiur from Rabbi Elimelech Kohn Ztl on פרשת פנחס. Discussed: - Understanding the Sforno about the public sin of Zimri which required a public act of vengeance in response. - A discussion on the possible merit that the United States had to become a superpower - R' Chaim Shmulevitz explains the unusual and vulgar worship of Baal Peor. Furthermore, why did this low form of Avoda Zara attract so many Jews?
Tonight's Chumash shiur (given at YBT on 6/16/21) wasn't a shiur, but an exploration of the short but perplexing incident of the fiery serpents, as explained by the Sforno. We only had time to set up the area, and didn't really arrive at any definitive conclusions, but I think the steps we took are good, and can be further developed by those who think into them.----------מקורות:במדבר כא:ד-ט עם פירוש הספורנובראשית ג:א עם פירוש הספורנו----------If you have questions, comments, or feedback, I would love to hear from you! A panoramic view of Parshas B'Ha'alosecha with a focus on the following questions: ● We seem to receive mixed messages about the state of Klal Yisrael. From Pesach Sheini to the faithful travel system, the Torah depicts Klal Yisrael in an overwhelmingly positive light. They seem inspired and optimistic. However, a series of unfortunate events unfolds in the latter half which reflects negatively on Klal Yisrael. They seem jaded and bitter. Is there a reason for this transition? What was the turning point?● Topical issues: Between the Menorah, Pesach Sheini, the consecration of Levi, and the chaos that breaks loose in the Midbar, there does not seem to be a single, unifying theme. Is there a method to the topics discussed? We'll be focusing on the approach of the Sforno, be'H.● There is apparently a new 'Sefer,' bracketed in between backwards Letter Nun's [׆]... Chazal say the 'book' was relocated from its original spot and the Nun's serve as 'signs' that this 'book' was moved. Chazal say it was inserted to 'separate two tragedies.' We don't find this anywhere else in the Torah. What exactly is the idea behind this separation?
Madlik Podcast – Torah Thoughts on Judaism From a Post-Orthodox Jew
Parshat Bechukotai - Judaism, along with most religions, favors consistency in practice and steadfast faith… or does it? Focusing on a single verse that has been used to support this position (Leviticus 26: 21) we argue for an alternative. Geoffrey Stern and Rabbi Adam Mintz explore happenstance, serendipity, temporarily fealty, chance, accident, the unintentional, the unexpected, or as the King James translators have God put it ”adventures with Me”. We contrast those who acquires their share in the World-to-Come only after many years of toil, and those who do so in one moment. Leviticus 26:21 (21) And if you remain hostile toward Me and refuse to obey Me, I will go on smiting you sevenfold for your sins. רַבּוֹתֵינוּ אָמְרוּ עֲרַאי, בְּמִקְרֶה, שֶׁאֵינוֹ אֶלָּא לִפְרָקִים, כֵּן תֵּלְכוּ עֲרַאי בְּמִצְווֹת: Rashi on Leviticus 26:21:1 ואם תלכו עמי קרי — Our Rabbis said (Sifra, Bechukotai, Chapter 5 5): this word signifies “irregularly”, “by chance” (מקרה), which is a thing that happens only occasionally; thus this means: if you will follow the commandments irregularly. Sifra, Bechukotai, Chapter 5 5 (5) 5) (Vayikra 26:21) ("And if you walk with Me laxly and do not desire to listen to Me, then I shall smite you even more, seven-fold according to your sins.") "And if you walk with Me laxly and do not desire to listen to Me": You made My Torah "incidental" in the world — I, too, will make you "incidental" in the world. "then I shall smite you, even more, seven-fold according to your sins": You transgressed seven transgressions — come and accept seven calamities. According to Samson Raphael Hirsch “keri” means “accident”. “keri” derived from karah (see Commentary, Bereshis 24:12) – denotes anything that happens without intention or beyond our reckoning. Accordingly, it is a purely relative concept. Something in it self can be intentional and premeditated, yet we did not intend it or plan it; it just happened to us and came to us by chance…. Your going with Me is only keri. Your acting in accordance with My Will is not your only intention and is not the result of a decision on your part. Your foremost resolve is not to obey ME, not to do only My Will. You no longer are opposed to My Will as a matter of principle, but My Will is not important to you. Other considerations determine you way of life, and you leave it to chance whether this brings you into conflict or accord with Me. The troubles that befell Israel accomplished at least one thing; their defection ceased to be extreme opposition, directed – as a matter of principle – against God and His Torah. But heeding God is still not their first and only aim. The illusory interests of prosperity and power remain their primary concerns. Their walking with God remains incidental: they keep God’s commandments only if these happen to coincide with their own interests. Baruch A. Levine writes in his commentary to Leviticus that the correct translation of “keri” is hostility. “Hebrew keri, “hostility” and the idiom halakh ‘im … be-keri, “to walk with … in hostility,” are unique to this chapter. Targum Onkelos translates be-kashyu, “with hardness, obstinacy” deriving keri from the root k-r-r, “to be cold.” Compare the noun form karah, “cold wave,” in Nahum 3:17, and mekerah, “cool chamber” in Judges 3:24 Shmuel David Luzzatto in his commentary to this verse, wonders why there is so much conjecture on the part of the commentators as to what keri means since, after all, Onkelos preceded them all and not only gives an obvious translation, but also clearly follows the translation that was accepted on the street, at the time. The meaning of the word המקום is that it was a place designed to accommodate travelers overnight. Every town had such an inn in its public square. This is also why the angels who came to Lot said (19,20) כי ברחוב נלין, “we will sleep in (the inn) in the public square. The same expression is also used in connection with the פלגש בגבעה in Judges 19,20 where we read רק ברחוב אל תלין “only do not spend the night in the public inn.” Pirkei Avot 2:13 (13) Rabbi Shimon said: Be careful with the reading of Shema and the prayer, And when you pray, do not make your prayer something automatic, but a plea for compassion before God, for it is said: “for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger, abounding in kindness, and renouncing punishment” (Joel 2:13); And be not wicked in your own esteem. Leviticus 1:1 (1) The LORD called to Moses and spoke to him from the Tent of Meeting, saying: Leviticus 23:21 (21) On that same day you shall hold a celebration; it shall be a sacred occasion for you; you shall not work at your occupations. And Rabbi Yehuda HaNasi further says: Not only are penitents accepted, but they are even called: Rabbi, as the Divine Voice referred to Elazar ben Durdayya as Rabbi Elazar ben Durdayya.
In tonight's Tehilim shiur (4/14/20 at YBT) we continued our analysis of Tehilim 118. First we reviewed and attempted to solidify the main idea from last time (Adler's Question #1). Then we delved into the task of understanding each part and how it fits into the whole (Adler's Question #2). We utilized the Radak's commentary, with some help from the Sforno, and got through about five pesukim. My guess is that we'll spend two or three more sessions on this difficult but worthwhile mizmor. If you're interested in our shiurim on all the other parts of Hallel, here are the links:Tehilim 113 Part 1Tehilim 113 Part 2Tehilim 114 Part 1Tehilim 114 Part 2Tehilim 115Tehilim 116 Part 1Tehilim 116 Part 2Tehilim 117Tehilim 118 Part 1----------מקורות:תהלים קיח עם פירוש הרד"ק והספורנו----------If you missed the crash-course on "How to Learn Tehilim," here are links to the YouTube video, the podcast episode, and the written version. Here's another article I wrote entitled How TO and How NOT to Apply Tehilim to Your Life.Lastly, here's an article I wrote entitled How to Say Tehilim for the Sick Without Violating Halacha.----------If you have questions, comments, or feedback, I would love to hear from you! Synopsis: I liked the letter we started yesterday so much that I decided to continue it in today's episode. Because Rosh Chodesh and its newfound significance (thanks to Sforno's idea, which I discussed in Season 3 Episode 17) has been on my mind, I decided to use Seneca's words as a springboard to suggest a method for using Rosh Chodesh as a tool for measuring one's personal progress, whether in Stoicism, Judaism, or any other area of development. I hope this hobbling together of disparate topics is coherent enough to be useful!Sources:- Seneca, Letter #123: On the Conflict Between Pleasure and Virtue- Sforno on Shemos 12:2- Tehilim 90:12 (click here for the episode on this)----------If you have questions, comments, or feedback, I would love to hear from you! Synopsis: In today's episode I reflect on my own chipazon-ridden journey from Pesach 5780 to Pesach 5781 in light of a memento mori passage from Aurelius and a beautiful commentary of Sforno on the mitzvah of Rosh Chodesh. I hope the ideas and personal reflections I share prompt similar thoughts in you. If you'd like to share them with me, I would be happy to listen. ----------Aurelius – Meditations 4:47Just as if God told you, “tomorrow you will be dead, or in any case, the day after tomorrow,” you would no longer be making that day after important any more than tomorrow, unless you are a utter coward (for the difference is a mere trifle) – in the same way count it no great matter to live to a year that is an infinite distance off rather than till tomorrow. שמות יב:בהַחֹדֶשׁ הַזֶּה לָכֶם רֹאשׁ חֳדָשִׁים רִאשׁוֹן הוּא לָכֶם לְחׇדְשֵׁי הַשָּׁנָה:Shemos 12:2This month is for you the first of the months – the first for you of the months of the year. ספורנו – שמות יב:בהחדש הזה לכם ראש חדשים – מכאן ואילך יהיו החדשים שלכם, לעשות בהם כרצונכם, אבל בימי השעבוד לא היו ימיכם שלכם, אבל היו לעבודת אחרים ורצונם. לפיכך ראשון הוא לכם לחדשי השנה – כי בו התחיל מציאותכם הבחיריי.Sforno – Shemos 12:2This month is for you the first of the months – from here and onwards, the months will be yours, to do with them as you will, but during the days of slavery your days were not your own: they were for the servitude of others, and their will. Therefore, it is the first for you of the months of the year – for on it your free existence will commence.----------If you have questions, comments, or feedback, I would love to hear from you! In tonight's Tehilim shiur (2/18/20 at YBT) we continued our analysis of the difficult Tehilim 90. Thankfully, we were able to arrive at an understanding of the main idea and the purpose of the perek! Granted, there are still some details to be worked out and some clarity to be gained, but I feel like we're on a good path. We also started learning the commentary of the Sforno, and might continue next week unless we end up doing something related to Purim.Click here for Tehilim 90: "Tefilah l"moshe" (Part 1).----------מקורות:תהלים פרק צספורנו - תהלים צ----------If you missed the crash-course on "How to Learn Tehilim," here are links to the YouTube video, the podcast episode, and the written version. Our first parsha, Bereshit (Genesis) was introducing Adam and Chava (Adam and Eve), our second parsha Noach was about Noach (Noah), and now Lech Lecha is the story of Avraham (Abraham, Abram) and Sarah (Sarai). As Noach was 10 generations after Adam and Chava, Avraham is also 10 generations after Noach. At the end of last week's parsha, Noach, we are introduced to Terach (Terah), the father of Avram (Abraham). Terach is listed in the descendents of Shem, Noach's righteous son (the other sons were Ham and Yafet/Japeth). At the beginning of this parsha, G-d comes to Avraham (at this point named Abram) and says “Go forth from your land and from your birthplace and from your father's house, to the land that I will show you” ~ לֶךְ־לְךָ֛ מֵֽאַרְצְךָ֥ וּמִמּֽוֹלַדְתְּךָ֖ וּמִבֵּ֣ית אָבִ֑יךָ אֶל־הָאָ֖רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֥ר אַרְאֶֽךָּThe word lech ~ לֶךְ, means the command “go.” So why the repetition of lech lecha ~ לֶךְ־לְךָ֛? This second word, (oft-discussed and very commonly referred to) lecha literally means “to yourself” or “for yourself.” Our rabbis comment that G-d is telling Avram to go for himself, as in it is for your own good that you should leave the place you are most comfortable, in order to be the great leader I know you will be. The translation of “to yourself” reveals another inspirational idea: when we are in discomfort or in a challenging situation, we learn more about ourselves. (I also giggle at the idea that G-d is like, "Avraham, you're 75 years old. You gotta move out of your dad's basement.") Then G-d says, “…and I will bless you, I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing” ~ וַֽאֲבָ֣רֶכְךָ֔ וַֽאֲגַדְּלָ֖ה שְׁמֶ֑ךָ וֶֽהְיֵ֖ה בְּרָכָֽהThis idea of a blessing is so vague, though, and what does it mean to *be* a blessing? Italian rabbi, Rav Ovadiah Sforno, or the Sforno, comments that a true blessing by G-d is when G-d rejoices in our deeds and actions. The idea of being blessed by G-d gives me the warm fuzzies. But how do we know what is a rejoice-able action or deed? It's hard to extricate deeds / actions from their motivations. I always talk about investigating our beliefs, but we can also investigate our actions. I ask myself a lot "Why are you doing _____?" or "Why are you saying _____?" And sometimes (most of the time) I can't make myself know or I truly don't know. But investigation of action is a muscle... just gotta keep pumping. Have you heard of the book Maybe You Should Talk to Someone? It's written by Lori Gottlieb, a psychotherapist. She talks about her clients and their issues, but also goes through her own struggles and her decision to find her own psychotherapist to see. This book honestly gave me so many tools to investigate the root of everything I do, think, and feel. So I can't give you tips on how to lech lecha (go to yourself) to find the roots of any hang-ups you may have, but this book might be able to! Haran (where Avraham comes from when first pilgrimaging to Israel) is on the other side of the Euphrates River to Israel, and so this is one of the reasons that Avraham is referred to as Avram haIvri, or Abram the Hebrew. Ivri (עברי) coming from ever (עבר) meaning "the other side." But Avraham-the-guy-from-the-other-side-of-the-river isn't a great name. The deeper idea is that Avraham was on the other side of the moral divide of the world. Our sages teach that righteous people must be ready for isolation. No one likes the "moral police," and not agreeing with people is hard. It's natural to want to be liked, but it's a slippery slope to bending our moral values to what is popular.
