HEAR PLAY Audio Theatre's premiere offering: THE TRIANGLE FACTORY FIRE PROJECT by Christopher Piehler & Scott Alan EvansEPISODE 1 The Strike (1909). The Fire (1911)The Triangle Waist Company was one of New York City's largest garment factories of its day. Located in the ten story Ashe Building just off Washington Square in downtown Manhattan, Triangle employed over 500 workers, many of them immigrants from Eastern Europe, Russia, and Italy. These workers, mostly young women, toiled fourteen-hour days making a popular lady's garment: the shirtwaist. On Saturday, March 25, 1911, just as the closing bell is about to ring at 4:45PM, a cigarette is tossed into a bin of fabric scraps on the eighth floor. Despite desperate efforts, flames rapidly sweep through the eighth, ninth, and tenth floors of the loft building — the three floors the Triangle Waist Company inhabits.THE TRIANGLE FACTORY FIRE PROJECT uses eyewitness accounts, court transcripts and other archival material to create a dramatic moment-by-moment account of this historic fire and the social upheaval that followed. It culminates in the manslaughter trial of the owners, Isaac Harris and Max Blanck, the repercussions of which shaped social, political, and economic policies for decades to come. About Through the Flames: Overcoming Disaster Through Compassion, Patience, and Determination After miraculously surviving a plane crash in Myanmar, Allan Lokos shares what his long and painful recovery process is teaching him about humanity’s ability to survive—and even thrive—in the face of suffering. In Through the Flames, Allan Lokos tells the terrifying story of being on board a plane on Christmas Day with his wife, Susanna, when it crashed and exploded in flames. Lokos was severely burned in the accident, and in the days and weeks following the crash, Susanna was told by the many doctors who examined Lokos that he would not survive. As founder and guiding teacher of the Community Meditation Center in New York City, Lokos had spent decades cultivating compassion and non-attachment. Since the plane crash, his Buddhist practice has been mightily tested. In this inspiring account of his against-all-odds recovery, Lokos uses his experience as a window through which to examine the challenge of human suffering in general and addresses the question of how we can thrive in the midst of pain and uncertainty. For Beyond 50's "Personal Growth" talks, listen to an interview with Allan Lokos. In 2012, his planed had crashed in Myanmar. After ensuring his wife Susanna's escape, Allan stumbled from the plane with severe burns covering 33% of his body. The doctors believed that he would not life. And yet, he did. As a Buddhist, Allan had already spent decades cultivating meditative practices, a sense of calm in times of duress, and acceptance and detachment from his own human suffering (which Buddhism teaches is unavoidable in life). He was able to use these meditative skills during the plane crash, forcing himself to remain calm as he tried to free himself. These skills again proved essential when enduring the pain and frustration of a long, difficult recovery. Allan shows us his survival was not just a matter of exceptional medical treatment, nor was it simply a miracle; his practices of compassion, patience, and determination ultimately helped saved his life.
