You never get style points, only matters if it is a win or not, and this one was and now Niners riding a 9-game win streak. Close out regular season holding the 2nd seed with a possibility of earning a bye and the #1 seed if Eagles would fall to Giants. Seems unlikely but it is the NFL and ANYONE, can beat ANYONE on ANY given Sunday. Let's play it and see what happens. A bye would be nice!  We close out the HPP regular season this week with a person who has become a mentor and good friend of mine, Ralph Steele. Ralph is a licensed therapist, Vietnam veteran, and a meditation teacher grounded in the Buddhist tradition, with a specialty in working with trauma. He has been teaching meditation and leading retreats since 1987 and is the Guiding Teacher at the Life Transitions Meditation Center in Santa Fe, NM. Some of you who participate in our MVP mindfulness courses will recognize him as one of our co-instructors.  Ralph spent his early years in South Carolina where his father was killed in the early 50's by Klan members when he was 4 years old. He and his mom made their way to Japan where he attended high school. This is where he was introduced to meditation and martial arts.  After graduation he enlisted in the US Army at the height of the Vietnam War. He spent 18 months deployed serving as a door gunner on a helicopter. His experiences in the Army, in combat and with the Army itself, are very powerful, as are his stories on how mindfulness and meditation helped him. After the Army he went to school earning a BA in Humanistic Psychology and an MA in Family therapy. He ran a meditation-based trauma clinic for 32+ years, and in there he left and spent a year training and serving as a monk in the Buddhist monasteries in Burma and Thailand. He wrote a book entitled Tending the Fire: Through War and the Path of Meditation. He later began breaking the race barrier in US meditation circles leading retreats for people of color. His most recent project is a 3-day meditation retreat exclusively for veterans to be held in Albuquerque NM in October of 2023. More on that to be released soon. Thank you to all of you for your support over the past year(s). We really appreciate it. Thoughts are not your enemy in meditation. If you're getting distracted while you meditate, that's not necessarily a problem. Thoughts are natural. They're always going to come. The point is not to clear the mind and to magically eradicate all thinking, the point is to have a different relationship to your thoughts. When we're not mindful of our thoughts, they march into the room, tell us what to do, and we act them out, reflexively, habitually and automatically— like puppets on a string. Our guest today, Dharma teacher Tuere Sala, is going to talk about how to cut the strings of what can often be a malevolent puppeteer.Sala is a Guiding Teacher at Seattle Insight Meditation Society and Spirit Rock Retreat Center. She's a former prosecutor who has practiced Vipassana meditation for over 30 years and is especially focused on bringing the dharma to nontraditional places. She is a strong advocate for practitioners living with high stress, past trauma and difficulties sitting still. In this episode we talk about: Why we get caught in our thinkingUnderstanding that our thoughts are not who we areHow to direct our attention away from negative thoughtsHow the idea of permanency causes sufferingUsing thinking itself as the object of our meditationNoticing mind statesRelative reality vs. ultimate realityThe eight states of mind and their felt sense in the bodyAnd Sala's definition of true liberationFull Shownotes: https://www.tenpercent.com/podcast-episode/tuere-sala-507See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

“One of my teachers says that all emotions contain their opposite. So when I'm willing to be with the grief, I have access to joy again. Instead of this armoring that comes very natural to us, we do our best to remain to find the willingness to open in an undefended way.” — Vinny Ferraro In this episode, Dara and Sarah talk with Vinny Ferraro about the training program, A Year to Live, emotional opposites and armor, insight meditation and how his practice has shifted his relationship to grief.  Vinny Ferraro is a nationally recognized leader in designing and implementing mindfulness interventions. He's served as the Training Director for Mindful Schools, Challenge Day and the Mind Body Awareness Project. His experience includes decades of direct services to incarcerated people. He's been empowered in the Buddhist Insight tradition, and he's been the Guiding Teacher of the Big Heart City Sangha in SF since 2004. This episode is part of a Breathing Wind miniseries titled Grief and Humor, co-hosted by Dara Kosberg and Sarah Davis. It seems as if the speed at which we live our lives presently, especially in the western world is one at which we cannot sustain. It appears that we are in a mental health crisis, especially in America. With depression, suicide, violent crime, and even gosh mass shootings on the rise, there has perhaps never been a more relevant time to discuss ways that we can reclaim the mental and perhaps spiritual state of mind with which we can soberly and peacefully live amongst each other. This is where meditation comes in. I have dabbled in meditation here and there over the years, and always wished I dabbled a bit more. That sense of serenity and peace one can experience after a good meditation or even a Yoga session is hard to describe and replicate or even describe, as anything but beautiful. And so I hunted down the biggest meditation expert I could muster, Zen Master Henry Shukman to tell us a bit more. Henry is currently a teacher in the Sanbo Zen lineage and has trained in various other meditation schools and practices. After a spontaneous spiritual awakening at the age of 19, followed by a difficult few years, he embarked on a long journey of healing and deeper awakening, guided by Roshis John Gaynor, Joan Rieck, Ruben Habito, and Yamada Roshi, international abbot of Sanbo Zen, who ultimately appointed him a teacher in 2010. Since then he has been leading a growing number of practitioners on the path of awakening, in Europe and the US. Henry has taught meditation at Google, Harvard Business School, UBS, Esalen Institute, Colorado College, United World College and many other venues. He has also been authorized to teach Mindfulness by Shinzen Young, and is a certified dreamwork therapist. His teaching base is Mountain Cloud Zen Center, Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he is the Guiding Teacher. What I hope you will take away from this conversation is a deeper interest in meditation and a desire to dive into the peace that only it can offer. I met Betsy Toll when I was 15. She introduced me to conscious parenting practices, sacred ecology and seva. Seva, in Sikhism and Hinduism, is a selfless service that is performed without any expectation of result or award for performing it. Seva means 'service', referring to the selfless efforts of caring for the welfare of all. Recently, I reconnected with her and discovered she is also serving as a spiritual companion and chaplain in hospital. Betsy Toll worked with Ram Dass on a conference in Los Angeles for Seva Foundation. Her early background in art, theater, and performance provided strong vehicles for activism on behalf of the natural world and her commitment to social justice. Also a student of Joanna Macy, in 1998, Betsy founded Living Earth in Portland, offering opportunities to explore what we love, what it means to be fully human, and how our awareness shapes our participation in our communities, our society, and our interactions with the living planet. Other influences include Roshi Joan Halifax and Frank Ostaseski. A writer and editor, Betsy also serves in hospital and home chaplaincy with individuals facing crisis, grief, trauma, and death. She leads dharma circles, and workshops, and offers residential retreats twice a year for Living Earth. Contact Living Earth for information on Open Door Dharma - Early Summer. Frank Ostaseski is a Buddhist teacher and a leader in the field of end-of-life care. Have you ever thought about walking a balance beam, or a gyroscope, or a tightrope walker? One is continually thrown off balance, but is every time instantly hit with the need to readjust and maintain poise. Equanimity is just that- the practice of balancing one’s mind to contain and open up to pain and discomfort while tuning it to revert to calmness. In a moving episode today, Traci is joined by Oren Jay Sofer, founder and Guiding Teacher of Next Step Dharma, an innovative online course focused on bringing the tools of meditation to daily life, and co-founder of Mindful Healthcare. He is also the author of the book “Say What You Mean: A Mindful Approach to Nonviolent Communication”, and has created mindfulness programs for a number of organizations, companies, and apps. Growing up with a mentally ill-family member, Oren was faced with the obligation to stay pretentious of his feelings and needs. And when things started falling apart in multiple ways, Oren turned to meditation and spirituality. Listen in as Oren expounds on his directional journey learning from his Buddhist teachers in India, understanding pain, empathy, humanity and non-violent communication, and housing the deep well of pain inside ourselves while generating equanimity to stay from decentering our thoughts. Oren has also shared how important it is to be willing to hold discomfort- for if we are seeking to transform the society, then no part of our action should come out of control and reactivity. Understanding society for its diversity and disproportion, and sitting down to listen to each other could phenomenally transform our relationships with people. We hope the power of Oren’s words reflect in each of your lives, and modulate all your thinking for the better!   Episode Timeline: [00:09] Intro[00:58] Meet Oren Jay Sofer[03:32] Understanding Oren’s early life[08:11] How Oren was introduced to Dr. Marshall Rosenberg’s works[16:20] How Oren sees the injustice happening around American culture today[12:34] Maintaining balance between the relationship and her business[21:04] Understanding the need to house discomfort[23:46] Understanding equanimity [27:19] Training ourselves to see beyond the surface perceptions and judgments [31:43] How to view differences and diversity[36:25] Oren’s advice for you[38:07] OutroResources Mentioned: Dr. Marshall B. Sometimes it's hard to say what you mean. Oren Jay Sofer says, "Communication is a learnable skill and it's one of the most powerful levers for making change in your life and the world." Non-violent communication is about taking responsibility for what we are experiencing using empathy, deep listening, know how to make requests. Author and renowned meditation instructor Oren Jay Sofer regularly teaches a mindful approach to non-violent communication. spent two and a half years of living as an Anagarika (renunciate) at branch monasteries in the Ajahn Chah Thai Forest lineage. Today, his teaching combines classical Buddhist training with the accessible language of secular mindfulness.  Since the early 2000s, Oren has had a deep interest in the relationship between contemplative practice and communication. A graduate of the BayNVC North American Leadership Training, he has taught classes and workshops in Marshall Rosenberg's Nonviolent Communication (NVC) nationally since 2006. His innovative retreats and online programs in Mindful Communication offer one of the only opportunities in the U.S today to explore the intersection between formal meditation practice, Right Speech and NVC.  Oren  is the founder and Guiding Teacher of Next Step Dharma, an innovative online course focused on bringing the tools of meditation to daily life, and co-founder of Mindful Healthcare.  Oren has created mindfulness programs for organizations, companies, and apps including Apple, Kaiser Permanente, Lumosity, Calm, 10% Happier, Simple Habit and others. I loved his book, Say What You Mean: A Mindful Approach to Nonviolent Communication.  In the book, a main theme is that every thought or feeling is there to try to meet a need.  If you can try to figure out what need your thoughts are tied to, it's easier to articulate what you need to those around you.  It's also useful when listening to someone in a disucssion or conflict to tease out what need they are trying to have met.  I also enjoyed learning about conflict and viewing it as a way to deepen relationships. I also learned that non-violent communication and conflict resolution isn't necessarily to try to get someone to do things your way, it's about deepening understanding of one another because sometimes we simply can't agree to have the same viewpoint.   Non-violent communication has a framework of observation, the feeling, the needs and values to be met, and the request. Three questions you can ask yourself are what happened, how do I feel about it, and why? I also loved learning about how to use mindfulness in listening and communication as well as how to ground yourself in your own body when tensions rise. Topics Discussed in the Podcast  from childhood actor to meditation instructor 4 types of conflict avoidance self-empathy tools for internal pressure No mud, no lotus addressing the voiceless and gender constructs how to make requests of others Listen Now   Resources Oren Jay Sofer's website Get Oren's book: Say What You Mean: A Mindful Approach to Nonviolent Communication     __________________________________ 2 Ways to Give Back to the Show     ________________________________________________   Don't Miss an Episode: Subscribe!
