The restaurant was known for its diverse menu, offering everything from steak and seafood to fresh vegetarian dishes.As they flipped through the menu, a moment of silence fell over the table. The Christian noticed his companions exchanging hesitant glances. Finally, the Jewish man spoke up, “Well, I need to make sure whatever I order is Kosher.”The Muslim man nodded, “Same here. It has to be Halal, no pork, no alcohol, and it has to be slaughtered the right way.”The Buddhist smiled thoughtfully. “I try to avoid meat altogether,” he said. “It's part of our principle of Ahimsa, non-violence toward all living beings.”The Christian, who had been eyeing the burger section, chuckled and said, “Well, I guess I am the only one with no restrictions. Here's the latest CPG news happening right now on February 17th, 2025 including Tru Beverage Investment, Blackbird Acquisition, How Poppi's Super Bowl vending machine campaign spiraled out of controlAccording to Bevnet.Com, Functional drink Tru recently closed a $4.6 million funding round highlighted by further alignment with Polar Beverage who will now be handling manufacturing, distribution and warehousing for the brand.US-based vegan food brand Blackbird Foods has announced an acquisition by plant-based investor Ahimsa Companies.Blackbird Foods is well-known for its New York-style hand-tossed frozen pizzas, available US-wide at retailers such as Target, Sprouts, and Whole Foods. The brand also offers plant-based wings made from seitan, which can be found at The Fresh Market and Wegmans.Following the acquisition, Blackbird Foods plans to use Ahimsa's expertise to enhance its distribution and manufacturing capabilities.“We are eager to tap into Ahimsa's extensive knowledge to strengthen Blackbird's presence in the frozen aisle,” said Mike Pease, co-founder of Blackbird Foods. “With their support, we have ambitious plans for growth and exciting product innovations on the horizon.”This year, prebiotic soda brand Poppi ran its second consecutive Super Bowl ad featuring influencers like Jake Shane and Alix Earle. But it wasn't the creator campaign on the big screen that got people talking as much as the one online.Ahead of the game, Poppi sent enormous pink vending machines to 32 creators and “fans of the brand” in NFL team cities, as well as The Boot bar in New Orleans. Recipients began posting videos of the machines, and mayhem ensued: some consumers expressed anger at Poppi for sending free products to “rich people,” while others bemoaned the message it sent to fans of the brand and smaller creators. “When it gets too extravagant…it just feels very out of touch,” creator Isabella Lanter said in a TikTok video response to the campaign.All the while, fellow prebiotic soda brand Olipop, which did not run a Super Bowl ad, jumped on the opportunity to respond to comments, speculate on the cost of the vending machines, and even mail out Super Bowl-themed gifts. It's no secret that the alternative protein startups are struggling these days. A combination of lower revenue, intense competition, and less available venture capital is leading to a contraction in the sector, with countless alt-meat and dairy companies conducting layoffs, declaring bankruptcy, and even folding altogether.  Enter Ahimsa Companies, a newly formed investment group acquiring promising but distressed plant-based brands. This isn't charity, though. Ahimsa's belief is that, with their consolidation strategy and pooled resources, these brands that are built on a strong underlying product can become profitable under the Ahimsa umbrella. As Ahimsa CEO Matt Tullman says in this conversation, pendulums swing, and many of these companies can be brought to profitability, meaning they could ultimately be sold at a much higher price than their valuation during this period in which plant-based products are in the valley. So far the company has acquired Wicked Foods, Simulate's Nuggs, Blackbird Pizza, an Ohio plant-based foods manufacturing plant, and more.  Matt is a man of many talents, as you'll hear in this episode. In addition to being CEO of Ahimsa Companies, he founded and sold his own education tech company, and is also the co-founder and CEO of Outlier Health, the parent company of supplement company Complement and of No Meat Athlete. He's both a missionary for plant-based lifestyles and a mercenary seeking to combine his passion for plant-based foods with profit.  Discussed in this episode Ahimsa Companies is looking for plant-based startups to acquire. Dr. Sheena Sood shares her insights.   Dr. Sheena Sood (PhD) is a Philadelphia-based activist, educator, sociologist, and healing justice visionary of South Asian descent. She is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Delaware Valley University in Pennsylvania and has studied yoga at Kailash Tribal School of Yoga in India. Her current research project is about Omwashing Yoga: Weaponized Spirituality in India, Israel, and the US, where she investigates the growing incorporation of yoga and mindfulness by far-right law enforcement, military, and vigilante groups. He shares his unique upbringing, which actually led him to be a lacto-vegetarian from birth until he became vegan in 2014.Growing up in a Hare Krishna organic farm community, Nimai was exposed to spirituality and the compassionate principle of Ahimsa, which is the root of his viewpoint on eating ethically with a plant based diet.Now onto the questions from my nutritionist brain…where do you get all your protein, dude? *Surprise! It's not actually that hard.*Nimai explains how he calculates his macros and how easy it is to pack in beautiful natural protein through tempeh, tofu, lentils, bean pastas and other natural sources.And yes! The culture of violence has become the norm. The false values of corruption, Competion, rivalry, unkindness,  ignornace  and inhumanity are on the rise. The only way we can turn this tide around is through shifting our individual sense of value and esteem to Ahimsa- the timeless value of being a human being.   Choosing to live in Ahimsa means choosing non violence, non-injury, and doing the work to cultivating inner harmony. Exposing or revealing dark thoughts, dark words, violent actions we give ourselves permission to open to healing our inner angst when we use these dark moments to shift our thinking, belief system away from the Otherness the binary, the duality is us/them that creates so much pain. Hi there ,   Have you ever found yourself in the judgment trap, feeling inadequate and unworthy?   Judgement isn't just about criticizing others, but it also picks apart our flaws and magnifies our mistakes. It whispers cruel “shoulds” and “shouldn'ts,” leaving us feeling unworthy and unlovable.   Often the judgments we make on others are reflections of our own insecurities and judgements about ourselves.   The sad part about listening to judgement is that when we judge others, we close ourselves off from the beauty of their potential and the richness of their experiences.   We miss out on the opportunity to truly connect and understand one another.   But perhaps even more damaging is the judgment we inflict upon ourselves.   This week, your invitation is to consciously recognize the harmful voice of the Itty-Bitty-Shitty-Committee—the voice that tells us we're not good enough, smart enough, or worthy enough, and instead of buying into its negative narrative, choose to practice Ahimsa.   Ahimsa is the Sanskrit terms that means nonviolence towards ourselves and others.    But Ahimsa is not just about refraining from physical harm but also about abstaining from harmful thoughts and beliefs.   When we embrace Ahimsa, we break free from the cycle of self-inflicted suffering and open ourselves up to a life of compassion and grace.   Each time you notice, pause and choose to not harm yourself through judgment that creates separation from others and ourselves, you move closer towards your True Self.   Listen HERE to the full episode EP 189.
