When the world feels heavy and hard, it can feel wrong or even selfish to feel joy amidst the suffering. But in this episode, we explore a powerful reframe: What if joy is not an escape, but an act of resistance or perhaps even revenge? As a leader, what if reclaiming your joy isn't just allowed—it's essential? As I've witnessed global unraveling happening alongside so many people's individual pain and heartbreak, I've seen firsthand how joy has shown up not in spite of this season, but through this season and these events. In this episode, we dismantle three major myths about joy and leadership, including the belief that modeling joy is tone-deaf or that it diminishes the seriousness of the world's pain. Instead, I make a compelling case for why joy is a mental health necessity, a leadership superpower, and a radical tool for personal and collective resilience. Backed by neuroscience and wisdom from some brilliant people who work in the field of joy and resilience research, this episode explores how joy rewires your brain (literally), boosts your team's ability to thrive, and helps you lead with more presence, empathy, and clarity, even when everything feels uncertain. You'll walk away with six tangible joy practices, such as joy hits, daily rituals, and joy-driven leadership tools, that will help you cultivate joy that is not only supportive of your own mental and physical health but contagious to those around you. Joy is not a betrayal of the pain. It's a balm. It's a strategy. It's your birthright—and it might just be your most powerful form of leadership. If you're an indie podcaster who's ever felt completely drained, discouraged, or on the verge of giving up... you're not alone. In this brutally honest episode, I open up about the real-life challenges I've been facing—personally and creatively—and how podcasting has both helped and hurt along the way. From going through divorce, to ending The Kris and Kristine Show, to watching the numbers on this very podcast unexpectedly grow—this episode is raw, vulnerable, and 100% real. I'm not here to sugarcoat the podcasting journey. I'm here to talk about the parts no one tells you when you're first setting up your mic and dreaming big: What happens when your co-host leaves... and it's also your spouse. What it's like to podcast while selling your house and dealing with life-altering burnout. How to keep creating even when it feels pointless. And why authenticity, not algorithms, is still your biggest advantage.

This is all to say, Elena Joy makes me want to be a better human, and I suspect she will have the same impact on you. In an official capacity, Elena Joy Thurston, she/her, is the CEO of LATITUDE, a boutique HR consultancy specializing in creating sustainable leadership pipelines through burnout prevention and emerging leader programs. In this episode of The Catholic Man Show, hosts Adam Minihan and David Niles welcome Michael Knowles, conservative commentator and host of The Michael Knowles Show, to discuss the critical role of language in shaping truth, culture, and faith. Drawing from philosophy, theology, and literature, Knowles explores how the corruption of language distorts our perception of reality, the dangers of slogans and propaganda, and the rebellious power of silence in a distracted world. From Dante's view of fraud to the importance of interpreting the “signs of the times,” this episode is a thought-provoking call to reclaim language for truth and virtue.Key Discussion Points:Language as a Lens for Truth: Knowles explains that language is not a neutral tool but shapes how we perceive the world. Misusing it, such as through euphemisms like “undocumented American” instead of “illegal alien,” can obscure truth and manipulate thought.Euphemisms and Lies: While polite euphemisms (e.g., “woman of a certain age”) can be charitable, dishonest ones cross into lying, undermining civil discourse and societal standards. The Battle of Standards: The real fight isn't between free speech and censorship but between competing norms. Knowles critiques free speech absolutism, advocating for standards that reject obscenity and fraud in the public square.Philosophy and Language Degradation: Drawing on Josef Pieper, Knowles notes that denying objective truth turns language into a tool for manipulation, eroding reasoned debate and civil society. The Power of Silence: In a world of constant noise, silence is a rebellious act that allows us to hear God's voice and interpret the “signs of the times,” as Christ urges.Dante and Fraud: Knowles connects Deacon Harrison Garlick's idea of lying as “contraceptive speech” to Dante's Inferno, where fraud, especially betrayal, is among the gravest sins, as it perverts language's purpose of conveying truth.Christian Task of Interpretation: Knowles emphasizes that Christians are called not to “do” but to interpret the world's meaning, aligning actions with truth rather than reconstructing it.Resources:The Catholic Woodworker – Discover heirloom-quality rosaries, including the “Saint Michael the Defender” rosary gifted to Michael Knowles.Check out The Michael Knowles Show on your favorite podcast platform or at dailywire.com.Explore Josef Pieper's works on language and truth, such as Abuse of Language, Abuse of Power.Learn more about Dante's Inferno for insights into the moral weight of fraud and betrayal.

Sometimes your boss is the biggest obstacle to your leadership growth. Whether they're dismissive, manipulative, or flat-out toxic, their behavior or opinion of you does not define your worth. After watching too many women leaders suffer under harmful male leadership recently, it feels crucial to share actionable strategies to help you trust your instincts and keep your intuition grounded in truth. It's time for you to reclaim your power even in environments designed to diminish it.When your boss won't advocate for you, it's time to advocate for yourself—boldly and strategically. In this episode, I share how to get visible beyond your direct boss, surround yourself with mentors and allies, and cultivate your leadership brand regardless of what your boss says (or doesn't say) about you. You'll learn how to set unapologetic boundaries, document manipulative behavior, and protect your emotional safety. We talk about how to navigate power dynamics with intention. By understanding your boss's motivations and insecurities, you can learn to protect your own energy and make more informed, strategic choices about how to engage. This clarity will allow you to choose your battles wisely, preserve your peace, and lead yourself first. In doing so, you will model a more grounded and powerful style of leadership for those around you, even in the absence of support from above.Remember, you always have a choice. Sometimes, navigating a “strategic stay” is the right move for right now. Other times, the best thing you can do is leave. This episode is an invitation for you to consider what growth, alignment, and success look like on your terms. Because even when you're being held down, you are still leading. Your job is not to shrink in the shadows of someone else's smallness. Your job is to stand tall in your truth, build your brand, and be the leader of your life. I was recently sitting in one of my Change Leadership classes for my Master's degree in Organizational Leadership, and my teacher asked us, “What would it look like if, as change leaders, we were to suspend certainty more often?” I immediately made a note to myself, “podcast episode on suspending certainty!” As someone who craves certainty but understands that nothing is certain, I often think about becoming more comfortable with impermanence. I've never heard this referred to as “suspending certainty”, but this term struck me, and I knew I wanted to dig into it with you all! In this episode, we talk about the importance of suspending certainty in leadership and personal growth. We talk through the benefits of embracing uncertainty, including: Increased curiosity Access to new perspectives Openness to learning and new opportunities Increased surprise, delight, and joy Gifts that come when we step out of our “I got it all figured out” ego Resilience, resourcefulness, tenacity, creativity, fun, and JOY are all born out of figuring out new things, embracing new realities, letting go of the old, and stepping into new opportunities where we don't know exactly how things will go. What might happen for you if you felt prepared to step into uncertainty at any time? Suspending certainty will help you with this preparation. Episode Highlights: 00:00 Introduction and Exciting Updates 03:35 The Concept of Suspending Certainty 04:03 Understanding the Gifts of Suspending Certainty 11:10 Benefits of Embracing Uncertainty 20:10 Navigating Personal and Collective Uncertainty 30:30 Conclusion and Upcoming Workshop Links Mentioned: Attend my free workshop for women small business owners, Focused and Fierce: Lead with Purpose and Build Your Business in a Noisy World: saradean.com/fierce Watch Shameless Leadership episodes on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@saradeanspeaks Hire me to speak: saradean.com/speaking Coach with me: https://saradean.com/executive-coaching-services Connect with me on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/saradeanspeaks Interested in becoming a sponsor of the Shameless Mom Academy? Can drinking tea make you happy – or do happy people just like to drink tea? There is definitely a connection between tea and mental health, and this episode begins with an explanation. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25657295/ Artificial Intelligence is either the next big thing that will transform our lives or the worst thing ever that will curse humanity. So, what is the truth? Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Gary Rivlan has taken a hard look at AI and joins me to discuss the good and the bad and reveals how AI will affect us all. Gary has been writing about technology since the mid-1990s, he is author of 9 books and his latest is called AI Valley: Microsoft, Google, and the Trillion-Dollar Race to Cash In on Artificial Intelligence (https://amzn.to/4dXcfIl). You have likely noticed that the world is pretty noisy. The big concern is that noise has a big impact on our health. It's not just hearing loss that is the problem. Noise is connected to heart disease, premature death and other health issues that we all need to be aware of. Here to explain how noise affects you and what we can all do about it is Chris Berdik. He is a journalist who has investigated the dangers of noise in our world and he is the author of a book called Clamor: How Noise Took Over the World - and How We Can Take It Back (https://amzn.to/45cyYhe). There is something that women can do with their voice that can make them seem more attractive to men. What's interesting is that if men try to do it, it has the opposite effect. The mission is to keep girls in school and stop teenage marriages, because school isn't free in over 50 countries around the world and when parents have to make the difficult choices of feeding their kids or paying for school, food wins. And when the girls hit their teen years, they will often be married off so that someone else becomes responsible to feed them. Educating girls also grows the GDP of countries, when they get into the workforce. This is how together, we can change the world. Guests on this podcast are invited to donate to this important cause. In this Shortcast edition, Cal Newport, author of Digital Minimalism: Choosing a Focused Life in a Noisy World, shares how we can reclaim our time and attention by taking control of our relationship with digital technology. Rather than rejecting tech entirely, Cal proposes a minimalist approach—using technology with intention and only when it supports what truly matters. In this Shortcast, we explore: Digital Minimalism Defined: Cal explains how minimalism isn't about abandoning tech, but using it selectively and purposefully to maximize benefit and minimize distraction. The 30-Day Digital Declutter: A key process in Cal's philosophy—taking a 30-day break from optional digital tools to reflect, reset habits, and rediscover values. Clearing the Slate and Starting Fresh: Cal encourages removing all non-essential apps and tools, then rebuilding your digital life from the ground up based on what serves your goals. Embracing Analog Life: Real-world activities like solitude, deep conversation, and hands-on tasks are vital for human well-being—and often lost in a screen-saturated culture. Mental Health and Focus: Cal highlights how overuse of screens increases anxiety and fragments focus, while digital minimalism promotes clarity, calm, and purpose. On this episode of the Customers First podcast, I'm joined once again by Amy Kehs, a seasoned brand strategist and communication expert focused on enhancing the visitor experience in museums. With over two decades of experience in public relations, Amy has developed a deep understanding of how to foster meaningful connections between institutions and their audiences, particularly in the wake of the disruptions caused by the pandemic. In our discussion, Amy introduces her recently published ebook, "Building Connection in a Noisy World," which serves as a practical guide for museums striving to improve visitor engagement and retention. The book offers actionable insights and strategies to encourage repeat visits and cultivate lasting community relationships. Amy emphasizes the importance of seeing visitors not merely as one-time attendees but as potential lifelong advocates who will return and share their experiences with friends and family. We explore the concept of museums becoming community hubs, where they can forge strong connections with visitors. Through engaging anecdotes, such as the loyalty fostered by a favourite restaurant and the 'Cheers' effect, Amy illustrates how consistent, welcoming experiences can create a sense of belonging. She encourages institutions to embrace local partnerships and community events, creating traditions that invite people back again and again. A significant portion of our conversation revolves around the necessity of clear and consistent storytelling. Amy stresses that museums must clearly articulate their unique missions and values so that visitors understand their significance beyond the walls of the institution. This clarity not only makes their messaging more memorable but also drives engagement and fosters advocacy. Moreover, our dialogue highlights the critical role of the visitor experience—how the journey begins long before anyone walks through the doors. Amy outlines the need for a meticulously crafted digital presence as the first touchpoint, setting the stage for an impactful in-person experience. From effective signage to follow-up communications, she underscores the importance of every aspect of interaction in shaping visitor perceptions and fostering loyalty. As we wrap up, Amy imparts valuable advice to museums and businesses alike: building relationships doesn't require a hefty budget; it involves a commitment to community engagement and clear communication. Her book is described as not merely a textbook but a living resource filled with real-life applications that can be utilized to nurture relationships and enhance the overall customer experience, no matter the industry. "Distraction hits us when we least expect it, but clarity is the anchor that keeps us steady." —Kristen WambachSHOW NOTESEPISODE HIGHLIGHTS Distractions can be visual, audible, or emotional. Clarity about who you want to be is essential. Identify what is important to you in the moment. Your next right step should be clear to avoid distractions. Distractions can be self-induced or divine interventions. Getting alone with God provides clarity and peace. Distractions pull us away from our intentions, muddling our clarity, and leaving us feeling unfulfilled. Whether it's a technical glitch during an important meeting, the constant buzz of notifications, or even emotional upheavals, distractions can derail our focus and peace. Kristen's message is clear: the real issue isn't the distraction itself but our response to it. "Every distraction holds a lesson. The key is not to eliminate them but to understand them." —viaK

On this deeply reflective and power-packed episode of TNT, Manny teams up once again with co-host Jonathan Cinelli of the People First Podcast to dig into some hard truths about why so many of us in construction—and in life—seek out struggle instead of embracing joy.We get real about:
From Nathaniel Baldwin's kitchen-table invention of headphones in 1910 to today's ubiquitous AirPods, our relationship with audio has transformed dramatically. We're constantly plugged in, listening to something—but are we tuning into what matters most? The advancement of audio technology is a powerful metaphor for our prayer lives. While we've mastered the art of speaking to God—powering up, plugging in, calling out—many of us struggle with the essential step of listening for His response. As Jesus reminds us, "My sheep listen to my voice, I know them and they follow me" (John 10:27). This isn't just poetic language; it's an invitation to authentic relationship where we're not just doing all the talking.God speaks in myriad ways—through creation's magnificent sounds, through spiritual leaders and worship, through His still small voice, and most consistently through Scripture. The challenge isn't whether God is speaking (He is), but whether we're creating space to hear Him. Through the practical "Seek Him, Speak Him" approach, we learn to ask three powerful questions: What is God saying through this passage? Why does this truth matter? How should I respond? Each question creates a natural pause for listening. This practice isn't just for personal growth—it's something we're called to model for those we disciple. Whether in short car conversations, around the dinner table, or through family messages, we have daily opportunities to demonstrate what it looks like to not just talk at God but to engage in genuine two-way conversation with Him. When we listen together, we grow together, and we amplify God's voice to the next generation.Ready to transform your prayer life? Download our Conversation Guide and discover how to put on your spiritual headphones, block out distractions, and truly hear what God is saying to you today.______________________The Family Disciple Me ministry exists to catalyze devotion driven discipleship in our homes and around the world. In a world overflowing with noise and opinions, how can we, as disciples and leaders, cultivate wisdom, grace, and meaningful conversations? Discipleship doesn't just happen in classrooms or sermons—it happens in the daily rhythms of our lives, in the words we speak, the beauty we notice, and the way we lead others in truth and love.In this episode of Group Answers, host Brian Daniel sits down with bestselling author and GraceLaced founder Ruth Chou Simons for a deeply thoughtful conversation about discipleship in an age of information overload. Ruth challenges listeners to embrace intentionality in their spiritual walk, starting with wisdom in speech and a commitment to truth. Ever feel like you're drowning in a sea of noise? Like the world's chaos is cranked up to 11 and you can't hear yourself think? You're not alone, my friend. In this episode, we're diving deep into the art of staying calm when everything around us feels like it's going bonkers.Let's face it - our world is loud. From breaking news to social media pings, from work emails to family group chats, it's a constant barrage of information. And while some of this noise is important (hello, world-changing events!), a lot of it is just... well, noise. It's the kind of stuff that leaves us feeling drained, overwhelmed, and disconnected from our inner selves. The Three Types of NoiseThe wake-up call: This is the good noise that reminds us we're alive and part of something bigger. The pseudo-urgency: Those clickbait headlines designed to hack our nervous systems. The background static: The sneaky, everyday distractions that dull our intuition.Finding Your Calm in the StormBut don't worry, I've got your back. You'll learn how to:Pause and ask yourself key questions when you're feeling overwhelmedDistinguish between meaningful action and emotional reactionsGive yourself permission to rest and rechargeWhy It MattersHere's the kicker: finding calm isn't just about feeling good (though that's pretty awesome). It's about becoming the kind of person the world needs right now. Someone who's:Rooted, not reactiveSovereign, not scatteredClear and conscious, not caught up in the noiseRemember, you don't have to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders 24/7. It's not selfish to take care of yourself - it's absolutely necessary. So, if you're ready to find your zen in the middle of life's circus, tune in. Let's turn down the volume together and rediscover the power of a calm, clear mind.
Many of the limitations we experience aren't caused by external factors but by the way we perceive ourselves and the world around us. In this session, I shared how judgment—both our own and the assumptions we make about others—can cloud our clarity and hold us back. Instead of seeking validation, we can shift our focus to what truly matters: living by our values, embracing the joy of missing out (JOMO), and making gratitude a daily habit. Real growth comes from small, consistent changes that align our actions with our purpose. By prioritizing what brings us fulfillment and surrounding ourselves with the right community, we create a clearer path to success. Today, we're exploring a powerful message about the two competing spiritual influences in our lives and how we can walk in the power of God's Spirit.Episode OverviewIn this episode, we'll examine the stark contrast between living by the Spirit of God versus the spirit of the world, using the dramatic story of Samson as our case study.Key Scripture* 1 Corinthians 2:10-13* Judges 16:1-30* Romans 8:11* John 20:22* Luke 23:46Sermon OutlinePart 1: Understanding God's Breath (Spirit)* The Greek word "pneuma" means breath or spirit* Heath Ledger analogy: How he studied the Joker's breathing to understand the character* To know God's breath is to know God's character and disposition* Scripture is "breathed out by God" (2 Timothy 3:16)* Only the Spirit of God knows the thoughts of GodPart 2: Samson's Story - Power and Promises* Background: God raised judges to free Israel from enemies* Samson's Nazarite vow and its meaning* The Spirit of God rested on Samson, giving him supernatural strength* Delilah's deception and Samson's poor choices* The devastating consequence: "The Lord had left him"* Samson's final prayer and redemptionPart 3: Jesus as the Greater Samson* Both died surrounded by enemies* Samson died with his enemies; Jesus died for His enemies* Jesus "breathed His last" to give us new spiritual breath* Jesus breathed on the apostles: "Receive the Holy Spirit"Part 4: Living in the Power of God's Spirit* Two competing spirits: the world's vs. God's* We will all die for a spirit - which one will we choose?* The Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead lives in believers* What needs to "die" in our lives for God's Spirit to fully operate?* Our communities don't need us - they need God's Spirit in usReflection Questions* What is the Spirit of God doing in your life right now?* What might God be asking you to let "die" so His Spirit can work more powerfully through you?* How can you better distinguish between the world's influences and God's Spirit?* In what areas of your life do you need to stop giving "CPR" to things that need to die?Closing ThoughtsWe all face a choice: Will we die giving ourselves to the spirit of this world, or will we allow things to die in us so we can fully live by God's Spirit? Remember, the same Spirit that empowered Samson and raised Jesus from the dead lives in you. Don't wait until it's too late to discover the power of living by God's breath.Next WeekJoin us as we continue our series on spiritual empowerment with "Recognizing God's Voice in a Noisy World."
