Patrick Campbell Financial Flossing: Guiding Dental Professionals to a Brighter Future with Ross Brannon  Episode 042: Winning the Student Debt Battle: Lessons from a Military Dentist  A 2020 graduate of Marquette University School of Dentistry, Patrick Campbell is currently a practicing dentist for the US Navy. Most recently, he has been on the “green-side” treating service members of the Marine Corps. Before dental school, he started to look at alternative career paths for his dental career (and of course ways to pay for school) which is when he found the Navy's Health Professions Scholarship Program. After a long application process, he was commissioned as a Dental officer in the US Navy and attended Officer Development School in the summer of 2020. In his free time, he enjoys producing engaging, light-hearted, easily digestible dental content for “The Eval”- a bi-weekly newsletter.   Listen to this information-packed Financial Flossing episode, where Patrick breaks down the financial pros and cons of working as a military dentist.   Here is what to expect on this week's show: The financial and patriotic reasons that led Patrick to a career in military dentistry What Patrick learned from providing dental care to Afghan refugees while on base in Afghanistan Added responsibilities that military dentists have to take on, and skills they need to learn What Patrick learned about loans in dental school, and how he utilized the benefits that the Navy provided him to reach his goals in as little debt as possible What the Thrift Savings Plan is, and how it's different from a 401K Connect with Patrick: LINKEDIN: https://www.linkedin.com/in/patrick-campbell-066132182/ Learn more about your ad choices. This is a special episode segment of The Blind Tiger Record Club Podcast called the B-Sides.  In July of 2021, Nashville Rock artist and guitar legend Damon Johnson joined the Blind Tiger Record Club hosts David W. Williams and Kevin Lee to discuss his brand new album Battle Lessons.  This LP Interview was a two part episode that covered Johnson's entire career from his early beginnings in music and the bands he played with during the 1980's.  We talk about the founding of Brother Cane in the 1990's, the years of touring, and the radio singles released during the band's time with Virgin Records.  We also discussed his time as a member of Alice Cooper's band and writing and recording on Cooper's Dirty Diamonds album.  We discussed his joining and touring with the band Thin Lizzy.  We talk about the formation and recording of Black Star Riders and recording with producer Nick Raskulinecz.  Finally, we discuss Damon's solo career, specifically his album Memoirs of an Uprising and his new release Battle Lessons with his new power trio called Damon Johnson and the Get Ready.   The B-sides episode is a grouping of audio clips with stories that did not make the long-form interview but are still interesting and entertaining.  On this episode of the B-Sides, Johnson told some additional stories that are amazing like writing songs with Sammy Hagar and getting a song cut by Stevie Nicks.  Playing guitar on one of Faith Hill's biggest hits.  Having a song recorded with Santana.  Writing and recording with Caleb Johnson and Jason Bonham.  He even shares an incredible story about music legend Ricky Nelson.   Here are the songs, artist, and albums included in this B-Sides episode of the Blind Tiger Record Club Podcast:   Sammy Hagar - "Salvation on Sand Hill" Stevie Nicks - "Every Day" Faith Hill - "Cry" Santanna - "Just Feel Better" (Feat. Steven Tyler) Caleb Johnson - "Hurricane" Caleb Johnson - "Dead Man Walking Blues"   If you love vinyl records, discovering new music, rediscovering music you already know, and learning about the music creators, this is the podcast for you.   To learn more, and sign up for our record of the month club, visit BlindTigerRecordClub.com.   *The LP Interview with Damon Johnson - Battle Lessons, Part One was originally aired July 19, 2021:  https://blindtigerrecordclub.com/blogs/podcast/season-4-the-forty-five-august-2021-records-of-the-month **The LP Interview with Damon Johnson - Battle Lessons, Part Two was originally aired August 2, 2021:  https://blindtigerrecordclub.com/blogs/podcast/season-4-lp-interview-damon-johnson-battle-lessons-pt-2     Hosts: David W. Step foot into Louisiana's bayous and you'll smell the strong scent of azaleas even before you smell the cooking. Amidst the sweet fragrance of flowers and mouth-watering cuisine, an odious history of racial division sits in the foreground of these communities on the frontlines of climate change. For lawyer and activist Colette Pichon Battle, growing up in this cocktail of complexity and beauty has greatly informed her work to dismantle structural racism exacerbated by climate change. As founder and executive director of the Gulf Coast Center for Law & Policy, Colette supports and activates local communities affected by climate change through regional, multi-racial alliances using everything from legal services to sacred pilgrimages down the Mississippi River. She's harnessing the power of community, spirituality, and indigenous knowledge to tackle the issues threatening our very humanity—racial injustice, climate change, and economic exclusion. A quintessential Paul McCartney track, "The Fool On The Hill" lands in a dreamy haze on Magical Mystery Tour, the tale of someone who lives with their head in the cloud, not a care in the word, inspire of the worries of those who think they're....a fool. Is the song about the Maharishi? About John? Paul himself? Or maybe all of us? Paul's never quite owned up to the truth on it, but it doesn't detract from the fact that this is a beautiful song. But what DOES detract is the peculiar choice of a recorder, the loud, children's-anyone-can-learn-it-instrument, used for the solo section. Is that enough to take the listener out of the blissed out vibe the song creates? Joining us to tackle this discussion is Damon Johnson, singer/songwriter and guitarist of Damon Johnson and the Get Ready, and formerly of Alice Cooper, Thin Lizzy (and offshoot band Black Star Riders), and Brother Cane. We chat about The Beatles playing a big part of a child's first memories, from the spinning of a Capitol label, to crib calls for "Mysterytour!!" We also touch on balancing an ear for melody and pop while holding down a gig in harder rock bands, and his excellent new album, "Battle Lessons," which is out now, how the pandemic shaped the record and possibly his next like, 10 records. They talk about Myles' journey including his religious upbringing and how he got into rock n roll at an early age, his beginnings as a guitar player and teaching guitar in his early 20's.
