What's the worst decision in Beatles history? Some might say it's John's “bigger than Jesus” remark, or letting “Magical Mystery Tour” air in black & white on the BBC. And yet, as decided by the good folks at Disney+/Apple/Calderstone/Zaappderstone, it would appear that the single most egregious moment in Fab history is the original “Beatles Anthology 8” runtime: 81 minutes. 81 minutes? IN THIS ECONOMY?  Fortunately (sfx: buzzer) much like labor laws, voting rights, and pride in this once great nation, Disney's "Beatles Anthology 8" has been drastically reduced. What's survived is typically stunning both visually and musically, plus a few new (in some cases, literally) interviews are a bonus. But what else can this episode teach us about life?

The band Genesis is a lot of things to a lot of people. For most, the name evokes memories of the popular three-piece lineup, featuring Phil Collins on lead vocals, who peppered radio with numerous Top 40 hits and MTV with music videos like “Abacab,” “That's All,” and “Land of Confusion.” For others, they're the pinnacle of 1970s progressive rock, led by charismatic lead singer Peter Gabriel, who left the band in 1975 and refashioned himself into a pop hit machine equal to his old band, leaving his fingerprint on pop culture with hits like “Solsbury Hill,” “Shock the Monkey,” and “Sledgehammer.” What many casual listeners may not know is that the band came together while the Beatles were still in mop tops and issued their debut single in the shadow of “The Magical Mystery Tour.” In his latest article for the Strange Brew, author Scott G. Roll up, roll up, and let Mark and Graham take you back to 1967, a time when the Beatles had already conquered cinema with Richard Lester. As a result, they decided to make their own film, with no script and the entire band as co-directors, then broadcast it on BBC One on Boxing Day. What could possibly go wrong?A lot, as it turned out, although Magical Mystery Tour still has a substantial cult following and a fair bit to recommend it beyond Beatles music - there's Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band music as well. Join us as we explore the origins of the film's strangest scenes, its influences on everything from Spice World to 2000s emo bands, the lives of the supporting cast and Paul McCartney's secret life of crime. The Beatles produced five films during their time together: A Hard Day's Night, Help!, Magical Mystery Tour, Yellow Submarine, and Let It Be. Some were cinematic successes, and some were not, but―along with subsequent reissues, bonus material, and Peter Jackson's The Beatles: Get Back, a documentary companion to Let It Be―they comprise an endlessly fascinating document of key phases in the group's career. In this comprehensive deep-dive into the band's movies, author and longtime music journalist Steve Matteo follows the origins, filming, and often frenzied fan reception of projects from the 1964 premiere of A Hard Day's Night through 1970's Let It Be to the release of Get Back in 2022. Matteo explores the production process, original theatrical film releases, subsequent VHS, DVD, and Blu-ray releases, and bonus materials, along with the US and UK soundtracks. In addition to copious anecdotes and behind-the-scenes details, he also places these films in their larger context, a period of unprecedented artistic and commercial innovation in British and world cinema. Filled with stories and insights that will satisfy collectors, buffs, and casual fans alike, this is the definitive account of an underappreciated part of the Beatles' creative output. "Reading is Funktamental" is a monthly one-hour show about great books written about music and music-makers. In each episode, host Sal Cataldi speaks to the authors of some of the best reads about rock, jazz, punk, world, experimental music, and much more. Occasionally, the host is joined by notable musicians who have written about their careers. Recent guests have included eccentric British singer-songwriter Robyn Hitchcock, Roxy Music's Phil Manzanera, Traffic co-founder Dave Mason, and Moon Zappa. Expect a great conversation and a playlist of great music to go with it.Sal Cataldi is a musician and writer based in Saugerties. He is best known for his work with his genre-leaping solo project, Spaghetti Eastern Music, and is also a member of the ambient guitar duo, Guitars A Go Go, the poetry and music duo, Vapor Vespers, the jazz ensemble Hari Karaoke Trio of Doom and the quartet, Spaceheater. Abbey Road Studios in London, England was the world's first purpose-built recording studio. Opened way back in 1931, this building and the people inside have been at the cutting edge of recording technology for over 90s years. Abbey Road Studios is most famous for being where The Beatles recorded almost all of their music, but it also drove innovation with stereo recording, multitracks, editing, and the shift from analog to digital recording.  In addition to all of those amazing Beatles records – which we'll get to – some other stuff recorded at Abbey Road includes Dark Side of the Moon and albums from Kanye West, Lady Gaga, Oasis, the Hollies, Radiohead, and the Zombies. Music scores for Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Marvel movies, and video game soundtracks for Halo, Call of Duty, and World of Warcraft. They even recorded some of Winston Churchill's famous speeches during World War II to help keep morale high.  From classical roots to rock rebellion, Abbey Road's always been ahead of the game, rewriting rules along the way. Sure, they are the hosts of The Approach Shot, but John and Neal were both radio personalities first. On air DJ's that spun records. So whenever a big time music act appears on the show, they geek out a little. And what a guest this week! BURLEIGH DRUMMOND (yes the word "Drum" is in his name) the drummer and original founders of the band AMBROSIA ("How Much I Feel", "You're the Biggest Part of Me", "You're the Only Woman", "Holdin' On To Yesterday" takes us for a Magical Mystery Tour of the 50+ of years of AMBROSIA, but also talks about Alan Parsons, Bruce Hornsby, The Beatles and others that have been part of their half century of music. Burleigh also talks about how golf was a big part of his life when he was younger and how he was able to bond with his Dad over golf. **He also got John and Neal's jaw to drop when he shocked us with a story of one of his Dad's friends who used to drop by and teach him golf. It's NOT who you would guess. If you grew up listening to "soft rock" or "Yacht Rock", you're going to love this episode. Or to borrow the title from an Ambrosia song, this episode is Nice, Nice, Very Nice"!

(S4 Ep 26) The Beatles -Magical Mystery TourReleased in the US on November 27, 1967, In the UK in December 1967, Recorded April 25 - November 1969 (Parlophone/Capitol) Magical Mystery Tour, released in 1967, is one of The Beatles' most experimental and imaginative records. Originally a UK double EP tied to their film of the same name, the U.S. version expanded it into a full album by adding iconic singles like “Strawberry Fields Forever” and “Penny Lane.” The record blends psychedelic rock, orchestral pop, and surrealism, continuing the innovative spirit of Sgt. Pepper. Highlights include Lennon's dreamlike “I Am the Walrus,” McCartney's nostalgic “The Fool on the Hill,” and Harrison's hypnotic “Blue Jay Way.” Though initially met with mixed reactions, especially due to the film's confusing TV debut, the album has since gained recognition for its influence, particularly on the evolution of music videos. It also marked the debut of Apple Corps branding. With vivid songwriting, genre fusion, and rich instrumentation, Magical Mystery Tour captures The Beatles at their creative peak, offering a colorful and surreal snapshot of late-'60s pop experimentation.Signature Songs: "Hello, Goodbye", "Strawberry Fields Forever", "All You Need Is Love" Full Album: YouTube  Spotify Playlist” YouTube Spotify

Merry Clambake! The entire TCBCast gang is joined by Rabia and Felix from Suddenly: A Frank Sinatra Podcast, Jamie and John from EAP Society, Kristen, Benita and Margarita from Those Elvis Girls, David "Ghosty" Wills from We Say Yeah: A Cliff Richard Podcast, Garrett Cash from "The Beat! With Garrett Cash", and Darin Evans, all in a manner never quite heard before - a non-linear episode intercut across four different discussions! The TCBCast Gang tackles the movie head on, giving Gurdip, Ryan and Bec (who missed most of the last two Christmases) the chance to voice all their questions about what makes this low-rated Elvis movie so eminently watchable... and also confusing. Meanwhile, Olivia brings her own deep dives. Oh, and most of them are drinking.  The Suddenly Crew took an experimental approach this year, watching the film "Bake to Front," starting their viewing at the halfway point of the film and working their way back around to the infamous "Clambake" musical sequence as an unintended finale. Those Elvis Girls discuss what makes Elvis' films fun to watch, what it's like to view his film career while being relatively new to the fandom, and call for #JusticeForClambake! And a gathering of film buffs get together to explore the year 1967 in film: what the big hits and notable releases were, and how Elvis' film career slots into the overall picture between the fading old Hollywood studio system and the more experimental and independent New Hollywood. Most fun of all, there's an exploration of some of the movies that Elvis Presley himself is known to have watched in 1967. There's a few surprises in store throughout as well! As of this episode's release date, "Clambake" can be watched freely (with ads) on TubiTV and Pluto TV in the United States and may be available on a streaming platform in your region as well.
