S9E6 went out live from the TSORR Studio on Myoli Beach on 5 Feb 2026 at 19h00 on Bulldogs Radio. Things are back to normal down here, and it's a bit quiet in the studio without my daughter, but I had a great show regardless, lots of fun in the chat groups. The Diabolical Challenge featured the first 4 of 16 live albums that will go into the quarterfinal in week 10. Votes were tied for Frampton Comes Alive and Deep Purple Made in Japan. We'll need another couple of votes during the week to get a winner. Check out the TSORR Facebook page if you want to vote, see below. S9E5 went out live from the TSORR Studio on Myoli Beach on 29 January 2026 at 19h00 on Bulldogs Radio. It's a great show. Once again, I have my daughter with me in the studio; this time, we were a bit more out of control. The whole 3 hours went very quickly. The Diabolical Challenge first-quarter final played out and we have a winner. You can hear it play out around 120 min in. The highlight of the show was Linda losing a bet about her dad sitting with Ringo Starr at a club in Rhodesia. She had to listen to listen to 4 heavy tracks i.e. typical TSORR fare. This edition of the DBG Times covers a wide range of rock and metal history, along with notable Rockstar Deathdays honoring Phil Lynott, Neil Peart, Steve Clark, Eddie Clarke, Sylvain Sylvain, and John Sykes. Looking back 10 years to 2016, the show revisits releases from Black Sabbath and Megadeth, including Sabbath's final studio-era material and Megadeth's well-received return to a heavier, more classic sound. From 2001, we highlight Turn 21 by The Donnas, an album that helped solidify their identity and garner more recognition. Going back 30 years to 1996, the discussion includes albums from Accept and Mr. Big, reflecting a challenging era as traditional hard rock and metal faced shifting trends. At 35 years (1991), we touch on notable releases by David Lee Roth, Drivin' N Cryin', and Motörhead, showcasing the variety of sounds coming out of the early '90s. Looking at 1986, we revisit Seventh Star by Black Sabbath and the long-delayed debut of White Lion, two releases with very different paths and outcomes. From 1981, the episode covers peak-era albums by 38 Special, April Wine, and Styx, all enjoying major commercial success during this period. Jumping back 50 years to 1976, we discuss releases from Bad Company and Grand Funk Railroad, each facing internal and external challenges at different points in their careers. Wrapping up the historical portion at 55 years (1971), we explore early albums from ZZ Top, Mountain, Lucifer's Friend, and Dust, capturing the formative years of heavy rock and metal. The episode also includes a rundown of new rock and metal releases, featuring recent albums from Alter Bridge, Bullet, Kreator, Gluecifer, Helix, and a final studio release tied to the farewell era of Megadeth. Chatting with Mark about his Frank Sinatra tribute and shows... along with Creed, Alter Bridge, solo work, and much more
Don and Dude continue the “I Love the 80s” tour with a stop in 1982, a year when rock still ruled the charts even as the culture splintered into cable TV excess, recession anxiety, and neon‑lit moral ambiguity. One host brings a haunted, lo‑fi folk song cycle from Bruce Springsteen that strips away arena gloss to stare down American failure, while the other counters with Brian Eno's fog‑shrouded ambient landscapes, where memory, geography, and unease blur into one continuous sound world. Together, the records trace how 1982 stretched rock from bombastic stadium anthems to cassette‑recorded confessions and experimental soundscapes that felt more like places than songs. The AlbumsBrian Eno – Ambient 4: On Land (1982) A dark, place‑obsessed ambient record, Ambient 4: On Land finds Eno retreating from pop structures into immersive soundscapes built from drones, treated instruments, and environmental textures. Working largely alone with tape composting and field‑recording‑like sounds, he reconstructs half‑remembered English coastal and marshland environments so the listener feels inside foggy, unstable “memory spaces” rather than listening to background music. The album pushes ambient away from soothing wallpaper toward quietly unsettling figurative music that would shape film scores, dark ambient, and textural rock for decades.Bruce Springsteen – Nebraska (1982) Recorded at home on a four‑track cassette, Nebraska strips Springsteen down to voice, guitar, and harmonica for ten stark story‑songs about killers, drifters, laid‑off workers, and families coming apart on the American margins. Intended as demos for the E Street Band, the tapes were released essentially as‑is because their raw immediacy captured a moral and emotional weight the studio could not, turning lo‑fi hiss and dead room sound into part of the storytelling. Long viewed as one of his bravest works, the album reframes the early‑80s landscape as recession‑era noir, where debts “no honest man can pay” blur the line between crime, survival, and faith.Diggin' AlbumsAlter Bridge – Alter Bridge (2026) Hard‑rock veterans Alter Bridge deliver towering riffs and soaring melodies that refine the heavy, emotionally charged sound they have been sharpening for two decades.Toto – Toto IV (1982) Studio‑honed pop rock at its most polished, Toto IV marries big hooks and meticulous production on songs that helped define early‑80s radio sleekness.Butch Dains – “Amelia” (2025) Retro‑minded singer Butch Dains leans into gentle, 50s‑inspired pop that matches his “always clean never nasty or mean” ethosPeter Gabriel – “Been Undone” (o, Dark‑Side Mix) (2026) The lead track from Gabriel's forthcoming album o turns a mid‑90s idea into a quietly luminous meditation on all the ways a life can come apart, carried by subtle grooves and harmonium‑like warmth.Follow & SupportFollow the show on Instagram, Facebook, Threads, and Bluesky @albumnerds, and support by subscribing, rating, reviewing, and sharing."There is some Eighties music that is just timeless, and some that is so dated it's embarrassing.” - Grace Jones

S9E3 went out live from the TSORR Studio on Myoli Beach on 15 January 2026 at 19h00 on Bulldogs Radio. It was a tough show; you shouldn't notice listening to the podcast, but it was a technical challenge with the station cutting out every couple of minutes and massive latency of 3-5 minutes. Rock and Metal Time Machine continues to get great support on the show, and the momentum is building on the Diabolical Challenge. We're now taking votes on the Story of Rock and Roll Central poll and on the TSORR Facebook page. On this episode, we got our third album for the playoff in two weeks, Guns N' Roses beat out Metallica, ACDC, and Def Leppard. They'll meet Black Sabbath, Alice in Chains, and whoever wins next week. The challenge played out after Immortals about two-thirds of the way through the show. There's not a lot of new stuff out, so we're still listening to Alter Bridge and Megadeth from last week. Please help me have a great year on The Story of Rock and Roll by sharing the links and sharing the show. It's the 10th anniversary of the book, The Story of Rock and Roll. S8E49 went out live from the TSORR Studio on Myoli Beach on 4 December 2025 at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio. It was a fun show. There was a super giant moon that is only going to be seen again in 2043, so we played a couple of songs for that. We had an interview with Funky Nature, did the Diabolical Challenge with 4 albums out of Germany, it was a jam-packed show and very entertaining. We also said a fond farewell to South African guitar legend Alistair Coakley, who sadly passed away this week. I hope the first person he meets at the great bar in the sky is Piet Botha, and the second is Lemmy. Wolfgang Van Halen is the frontman, guitarist, drummer, bassist and songwriter for the band Mammoth. Yes he plays all the instruments on their albums, Mammoth III just came out. On stage though Wolfgang has a plethra of amazing musicians backing him up. Myles Kennedy is the lead singer of Alter Bridge who's new album AB is due out in January. He's also the lead singer for Slash Featuring Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators. When he's not busy with those projects he has is own solo band. Mammoth are on tour until mid December with Myles opening up the shows and I had the pleasure of joining them on a recent tour stop that ended with a conversation in Myles' dressing room with both of them.
This week, Robert and Kevin get back to their regional roots with some foot-stomping Southern Rock. A perfect blend of country, blues, and hard rock with just a hint of twang. Join us as we embrace our culture and play some down-home tunes. What's this InObscuria thing? In a recent interview with Guitar Interactive Magazine, Paul Reed Smith opened up about his unexpected connection to Eddie Van Halen. “I made the 5150 pickup. I made the 5150 guitar. I'm the one who bolted it together and got it working at Kramer,” Smith revealed, recalling his hands-on role in shaping one of rock's most iconic guitars. Although a signature PRS model for Eddie never materialized, Smith did craft a custom guitar for him years later. The collaboration nearly happened—an “almost” that has since become part of guitar legend. “I did make one for him… He was a sweetheart. He was so nice to me,” Smith said. “It just wasn't meant to be.” We dive into a recent Guitar Interactive Magazine interview where Paul Reed Smith claims he built the Kramer 5150 pickup and the guitar itself!
