When you think about '70s rock 'n' roll, few names bring to mind teenage rebellion and raw energy like Cherie Currie, the original lead singer of The Runaways. She was only 15 years old when she fronted one of the most groundbreaking all-girl rock bands of the era, making waves with her powerhouse voice, striking stage presence, and that iconic corset-and-chains outfit that became part of rock history.Cherie was born in California and grew up in the heart of the San Fernando Valley. Before she ever thought about fronting a rock band, she was just a music-obsessed teenager who idolized David Bowie. In fact, it was her love of Bowie's glam-rock style that shaped her own look and attitude. Cherie was already performing in small gigs around L.A. when Kim Fowley and Joan Jett came calling. They were putting together a tough, edgy, all-female rock band that would soon shake up the male-dominated music scene. In '75, Cherie joined The Runaways, alongside Joan Jett, Lita Ford, Sandy West, and Jackie Fox. She quickly became the band's lead singer, famous for belting out songs like “Cherry Bomb”, which became the group's signature anthem and is still celebrated as one of the defining punk-rock tracks of the ‘70s. Currie's onstage persona—provocative, fearless, and rebellious—made her a standout in the band and a poster child for teenage rock rebellion. The Runaways were groundbreaking. They weren't just a novelty “girl band”—they could really play. The girls toured the world and in Japan they were treated like superstars. But behind the scenes, things weren't always as glamorous. Tensions within the band, combined with the pressures of fame, the exploitation of young girls in the rock world, and substance abuse struggles, led to Cherie leaving The Runaways in '77—just two years after she'd joined.Life after The Runaways was a wild mix of ups and downs for Cherie Currie. She launched a solo music career, releasing the album Beauty's Only Skin Deep in '78 and later teaming up with her identical twin sister, Marie Currie, for the duet album Messin' with the Boys in '80. Cherie also explored acting. She starred alongside Jodie Foster in the cult classic film Foxes (1980) and appeared in other films throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s, including Parasite and Twilight Zone: The Movie. But Cherie didn't stop there. She reinvented herself yet again—as a chainsaw artist. In the 2000s, she became an award-winning chainsaw carver, creating intricate wooden sculptures that stunned critics and fans alike. In 2010, interest in her story skyrocketed with the release of The Runaways movie, starring Dakota Fanning as Cherie and Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett. The film reignited global attention for the band, cementing Cherie's legacy as a trailblazer for women in rock. Around the same time, she published her memoir Neon Angel: A Memoir of a Runaway, a raw, honest account of her life in and out of the band. She's continued to perform music into recent years, releasing the 2019 album Blvds of Splendor.Cherie Currie will always be remembered as the fierce blonde teenager who stepped onstage and screamed “Hello world, I'm your wild girl!” with The Runaways. She was part of a band that kicked open doors for future generations of female rockers—from Joan Jett's later success with The Blackhearts, to the riot grrrl movement, to today's women-led rock bands. Her story isn't just about teenage fame—it's about survival, reinvention, and proving that rock 'n' roll really can be forever. This week Cherie joins us to share it all.I'd love to hear if you enjoy this episode. Yes, it's Christmas Eve on MTV's Headbangers Ball, and Ozzy Osbourne and Zakk Wylde are hosting the festivities. We're introduced to a slew of ‘80s metal bands, but kicking off the festivities is Ozzy himself with “Crazy Babies!” Poison, Judas Priest, Winger, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake, and Guns N' Roses follow. Ozzy and Zakk have a great time introducing the videos. In fact, they even dress up in Santa hats. Ozzy even wears an odd mask and a pirate hook. Next up are videos from KISS, Hurricane, Alice Cooper, RATT, Aerosmith, and Cinderella. Ozzy suddenly appears in a picturesque Christmas fireside, but now inexplicably has on caveman feet and a club. Subsequently, videos from Lita Ford, Anthrax, Bad News (with the only Christmas song), Def Leppard, and Iron Maiden air. Finally, Hear N' Aid sang “Stars” and Headbangers Christmas concluded! Go get ‘em, boys!AC/DC singing “That's The Way I Wanna Rock 'N' Roll?” Yep. Yngwie Malmsteen performing “You Don't Remember, I'll Never Forget?” Uh huh. Sam Kinison? Sam Kinison?!?! Music up until the 1970s had been a predominantly male-dominated industry, especially the rock scene, which was considered to be full of exactly the type of people your mother warned you about.Sure, there were some brilliant artists, including Janis Joplin, Marianne Faithfull and Suzi Quatro, but it was in the mid 70s when three young, brash and rebellious aspiring musicians called Joan Jett, Sandy West and Micki Steele were assembled by record producer Kim Fowley that the musical landscape changed forever. After the loss of Steele early in the piece, the new all-girl group called The Runaways welcomed Peggy Foster on bass and guitarist Lita Ford, before discovering a 15-year-old Cherie Currie who completed the final piece of the puzzle as vocalist. The rest, as they say, is history, and if by chance you are drawing a blank from the name The Runaways, then think about a song called Cherry Bomb, and things will become clearer. The release of their debut self-titled album in 1976 saw The Runaways support the likes of Cheap Trick, Van Halen, Talking Heads, and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, in the process giving voice and purpose, and more importantly, musical respect, to aspiring female musicians around the world. But it was teenage frontwoman Cherie Currie and her youthful defiance that captured the hearts as well as the ears of a growing global rebellion. She became the face of rock and the inspiration for hope and change. In short, she became a legend; a national treasure and someone who young girls wanted to grow up to be.After disbanding two years later, each member of The Runaways went on to greater success but did so without ever touring Australia. Currie rectified that blight with her debut tour in 2016, but she returns in September this year as part of her worldwide farewell tour, determined to leave one final musical impression on this side of the world.Cherie Currie's Final Australian Tour is the ultimate celebration of a rock legend who defined an era and inspired countless fans and would-be musicians around the globe. Whilst The Runaways never made it to Australia, we have been lucky enough to witness their iconic vocalist not only once, but now twice, with a chance to say goodbye.Currie joined HEAVY earlier this week to talk about the tour and the enduring legacy that is The Runaways."I've been looking forward to this for months now," she enthused. "When I was in Australia in 2016, it was a completely different band, and the reason I'm so excited about this one is my son's band is going to be backing me. His band is called Maudlin Strangers, but Jake is taking the drums this time. He's a front guy and an amazing singer and guitar player. But Sandy West, god rest her soul, gave him some lessons when he was just a kid, and he is paying such homage to Sandy West. He plays it just like her, and when I turn around, and I get to work with my son on stage, it just feels like I've got Sandy with me. It's just fantastic, and this band is off the charts."Currie is partway through the farewell tour, aiming to say goodbye to as many fans as she can. While it is undeniably an emotional time for the fans, having to say goodbye, Currie has to go through it every time she goes on stage. So far she has completed last tours through Europe and the UK, and we point out must be a difficult thing for her to do night after night."It is," she sighed genuinely. "It does hurt. It is painful because I still see people that I've seen at other shows and other tours I've done in the UK and Europe. I them and I see their faces. I recognize them, and it is a little tearful. It really is, because I thank them so much for all this support."In the full interview, Cherie spoke about the setlist, which will feature a mix of The Runaways hits, solo favourites, and new songs from her latest album, Boulevards of Splendor. She reflected on her nearly 50-year career, the emotional challenge of saying goodbye to fans, and the significance of connecting with her audience.Cherie recounted her early days with The Runaways, the pressures of the music industry, and the influence of Suzi Quatro. We talked about performing songs that were written at a different time of her life and how she maintains a connection with them, the national support act Hot Machine, the musical climate that gave birth to The Runaways and if they realized how much influence they would have on the music scene.Cherie went deeper into the early days of The Runaways and how various people tried to change or mould the band, the reasons they stuck to their guns, walking into the offices of EMI Records and demanding to be seen, how being in The Runaways impacted her life and career, plus more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Having grown up purchasing Black Sabbath albums, Matt eventually found himself trading guitar solos with Tony Iommi and jamming alongside Bill Ward through Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp experiences that transformed his relationship with music. The most remarkable chapters of Matt's story revolve around Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp, which he describes as "life-changing." Through this innovative program, musicians of all skill levels get to perform with rock legends. For Matt, this meant playing Hendrix's "Hey Joe" with Bill Ward and Lita Ford, and later receiving "the nod" from Tony Iommi to take a guitar solo during Black Sabbath's "Into the Void." These surreal moments—capped by Iommi gifting him a guitar pick—illustrate how the boundaries between fan and musician can beautifully blur.As we anticipate Black Sabbath and Ozzy's final performance together in Birmingham on July 5, 2025, Matt's experiences offer a unique perspective on music's power to create meaningful connections across decades. His story reminds us that passion, persistence, and a willingness to participate can transform our relationship with the music and artists we love.We also look back at the Billboard Hot 100 Chart from July 13, 1985. Songs included are Dire Straits "Money for Nothing" and Dead or Alive "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)." What made #1? Before “Close My Eyes Forever” lit up the charts, before Headbanger's Ball turned her into a fixture, Lita Ford was already a rock warrior—grinding through the scene, guitar in hand, defying expectations. In this episode, we dig into Lita(1988), the album that wasn't just a comeback—it was a recalibration of what a woman in hard rock could sound like, look like, and fight for.We explore how Ford's solo career almost stalled out before a four-year gap led to her biggest moment yet. With Ozzy Osbourne on the mic, Lemmy and Nikki Sixx in the writing credits, and Sharon Osbourne pulling the strings, Lita fused glam metal polish with raw attitude. From cassette-era mall culture to late-night studio accidents that became iconic power ballads, this record is equal parts glitter and grit.If you love Joan Jett, Pat Benatar, Vixen, or the hard-edged side of 80s metal, this episode will hit all the sweet spots.

Mark interviews Cathy Rankin and Ken Mary about Cathy's new single "Now You've Gone." On October 29, 2024, Cathy Rankin released her debut single “Now You've Gone,” featuring renowned musicians David Ellefson (formerly of Megadeth) Ken Mary (formerly of Alice Cooper) and John Ronson. The emotional track, inspired by deeply personal experiences, reflects on themes of love, grief, and ultimately hope. Prior to the interview, Mark shares comments from recent episodes, a personal update, and a word from this episode's sponsor. This episode is sponsored by the 2024 Novel Writing Storybundle - Only available until the end of November 2024. In the interview, Mark, Cathy, and Ken talk about: Cathy's various family members who are musicians, her first exposure to music when she was young and how that impacted her creative life Getting into theatre, and acting, when she was little, but not having the confidence in music itself The first time Cathy had to perform a singing scene when she was acting in a film The difference between being a performing musician and being a live host Ken's background as a musician having toured with various different artists over the years How being the lead singer might be one of the more difficult positions to be in, since the majority of the audience focus is on them (rather than, for example, the drummer) The concept of the instrument choosing the musician rather than it being the other way around - and how that's the way it was for Ken and playing the drums How playing drums was never "work" for Ken no matter what type of band he was in The great producers that Ken has worked alongside over the years The way that Cathy and Ken first met and started to work together (When Jon Ronson asked Cathy to interview Ken about his most recent album) Cathy showing some of her poems to Ken and getting some feedback on the option to produce one of them into a song How everything in this production unfolded organically and the chemistry of Cathy and the musicians in producing the song The delightful lyrical and musical Easter Eggs that appear in the song The connection between Neil Peart's loss of his daughter and the loss of Cathy's nephew Christian and why the song is a tribute to both their memories What people who want to support the musical artists can do to help out After the interview Mark reflects on three different things that came up in the conversation, including the magic of organic creativity, the concept of playing a character when on stage, and the value of art, music, poetry, and prose in expressing deep emotion and forging connections. Whether on stage, on camera, or in any crowd, Rankin brings a strong female voice to her music on every level. Never one to take a backseat, this force-to-be-reckoned-with doesn't just move fans with her powerful vocals, but also proudly reps the girls while holding her own with the guys. And, in Cathy's case, it's not just any ordinary "guys" that are part of her project, its renowned rockers David Ellefson, bassist (Kings of Thrash, Dieth, formerly of Megadeth), Ken Mary, Drummer/Composer/Producer (Flotsam and Jetsam, Great White, Fifth Angel, formerly of Alice Cooper and House of Lords), and guitarist John Bronson. This formidable line-up is on display on her new single, "Now You've Gone," with more music arriving soon. Cathy's natural inclination for music and performance was evident from an early age when she vowed she would be a singer and actor, and her dream never wavered. Her grandfather first influenced her love of music. An accomplished professional big band musician, he played saxophone, clarinet, flute, piccolo and piano, primarily by ear, practicing in his music room with Cathy paying close attention. This exposure, along with her grandmother, one of the first female violinists in the Scottsdale Symphony, and guidance from her big sister who played drums in the popular 80s metal band, Whiskey Blu, formed the musical foundation that would be a lifelong passion for this songstress. While Cathy's influences were wide-ranging, her original work is deeply rooted in classic rock woven with elements of blues, a touch of prog and at times even country, taking listeners on a journey reminiscent of the iconic frontwomen that defined female rock, such as Nicks, Wilson and Benatar. As a member of popular cover bands, Superhero and Daisy Train, Cathy spent years performing full time for thousands of audiences on countless stages, from Superbowl Fanfest, to corporate events, festivals and the Vegas Strip. Cathy is also co-host of the Metal Hall of Fame with Eddie Trunk (That Metal Show, Trunk Nation), and host of the annual Bubba Bash honoring Neil Peart. And through in-depth interviews with award-winning artists such as John Waite, Geoff Tate, Lita Ford, KIX, Winger, Fifth Angel, and more, Cathy has been able to share that education and inspiration with countless other passionate music fans. Ken K. Mary is an American musician who has worked as a drummer, producer, engineer, and record executive on over thirty-five albums. He has worked in genres from heavy rock to choral music. Mary is best known for his work with acts such as Accept, Fifth Angel, Chastain, TKO, Impellitteri, House of Lords, Bonfire and Alice Cooper, and is currently the drummer of Flotsam and Jetsam and Jack Russell's Great White The introductory, end, and bumper music for this podcast (“Laser Groove”) was composed and produced by Kevin MacLeod of www.incompetech.com and is Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0

Casandra Carson stops by on a tour stop to discuss her latest endeavor, Casandra's Crossing. This is an album that she released on the day the show was recorded with George Lynch. This is a fantastic new album that compliments the work she does with Paralandra very well. The response was so positive, and they enjoyed it so much, they decided to continue booking shows and writing songs. They recorded and released a homemade CD titled Rise Up; which sold over 1,000 copies at local shows. Shortly after, friend and local musician, Sawyer Rikard, joined the band on bass guitar in 2015, bringing their stage sound and performance to another level. In March of 2016, they released a follow-up EP, All Fall Down, which debuted #1 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. They soon began touring and being invited to festivals such as Rocklahoma, SXSW, Rockfest, Dirtfest, Loud in Lima, etc.In 2018, they joined forces with Legend Recordings, and released another EP, Ascension, which became their biggest release yet with singles “Back to Life” and “Killer Queen” landing on the radio. Shortly after, they added local powerhouse drummer (and childhood friend of Sawyer), Dakota Watson, to form the rhythm section Casandra, Paul, and Sawyer had always dreamed of. In 2019, they recorded standalone single “Love Will Win” with producer/videographer, Jake Jones, which gained even more radio play, and placed them on numerous national tours; supporting artists such as Tantric, Saliva, Yngwie Malmsteen, Dokken, and being added to the KISS Kruise and NAMM Show. The band continued to write, record, livestream, and perform wherever they could during the 2020 pandemic, and only continued to gain traction and fans from all over the world. Reaching out on a whim, they won over the attention of renowned producer/songwriter, Elvis Baskette, and shortly thereafter, entered the studio to record their first professionally made, full length album, Street Magic, in 2021. This release proved to be a monumental success, skyrocketing their audience with over 5 million views and streams across all platforms. Radio singles from this release alone include “For the Record”, “Despicable”, “Repeat Offender”, “Can't Quench the Fire”, and “Only Human”.Paralandra has since toured the country on multiple headlining runs, and is constantly supporting iconic bands such as Warrant, Lita Ford, Firehouse, Last in Line, and countless others with no end in sight. They reentered the studio with Elvis Baskette in 2023 and recorded their 2nd studio album, which is due April 4, 2024. They plan for this release to be just as big, if not bigger than the last, as they continue to record, write, tour, and work tirelessly to build their brand, and change the direction of rock music to be a force for good in this world.

His sound is characterized by intense, soulful vocals and raw, honest lyrics. Hermes made his official debut in 2020 with the EP "SOULS WITH STONES," produced by renowned music producer Buddy Hyatt. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID shutdown, Hermes focused on songwriting, collaborating with Grammy-winning songwriter/producer/manager Dale Oliver. In 2023, he released his full-length CD, "ROCKIN' A COUNTRY TOWN," co-produced with Oliver. The album features original songs written alongside Dan Couch and Big Vinny Hickerson, including tracks like "Stronger Than Whiskey," "SkyFall," and "Used To Be Me," which reached No. 46 on the MusicRow Country Breakout Chart. Hermes has quickly gained support from country radio, fans, and his peers. Over three years, he has shared the stage with top country artists such as David Nail, Ward Davis, Craig Campbell, Kolby Cooper, and Kinsey Rose from The Voice. He has also established a presence in the Rock 'n Roll arena, opening for acts like Uncle Kracker, Black Stone Cherry, Head East, Jackyl, and Lita Ford. With a unique blend of grit and determination, Joe Hermes is carving out his own path in the music industry, ready to ROCK A COUNTRY TOWN. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tophillrecording/support
