Why Are You So Damn Negative?? The Glass Doesn't Have To Be Empty!!

Well, it's been a minute guys, and I definitely missed you!!Welcome to my very first podcast episode of the service without excuses series of 2024 where I do a deep dive into a little bit of pessimistic thought process. Many years ago I was told by a yellow pages salesman (if your over 40) the you understand lol what the hell I am actually talking about. He asked me a quick question about how busy I was at the time, being, I just started the business, and spent a small fortune much more than I could afford on these yellow page print ads that it was extremely slow, and it was very frustrating.Even though the last thing I wanted to hear was give it time as I was going broke, but the advice he gave me was mind blowing. He said I don't care if you have no work on the books, never tell a client or customer that you're slow as they don't want to deal with people that are busy. No matter what always be seen as busy and needed and your book and convert many of your jobs. He spoke the ultimate truth, and from that day on, I was never available same day, even though I had nothing going on to give the client the impression that I was needed and wanted by other customers.I even talk about, my life-changing experience when it came to medical issues and needing to see doctors that weren't available for months at a time. When I think about if the doctor says I can see you tomorrow either it's very bad, or they most likely are, and I don't want them giving me medical advice. It's always good to be a little bit of both optimistic, as well as pessimistic, but if it takes over your world, and all you see, is the dark and negative in things, it can, and will destroy everything around you. Not just your business life, but your personal life as well..In this first podcast of 2024, I discuss some of the things I talk with my friends and followers on different social media sites as well as email questions I receive. This was something I saw over and over and felt it was good to discuss. Why Overcoming Objections Is Critical To Your Business

One of the most critical things in any business is overcoming objections, when selling a product or service. Having a canned approach, or as I call it (Plastic) One size fits all way of selling you will come out as a loser in the end yes, having some minor success you may be OK upfront, but in the end the results will not be what you want them to be. Selling a product or service is about how you and your client relate to one another, the more commonalities you have about things that will benefit him or her, the easier the transaction will go. How you relate to someone and how their body language reacts will become a template (or a data bank) for how you can and will overcome objections and have a significantly better time selling. In episode 113 of the Service Without Excuses Podcast we do a deep dive into the psychology of why and how it works it works including several examples on how to spot certain habits that will help you be successful. We again want to thank our sponsors at prodigypro.io for the continued support, I highly recommend you go and visit this website to learn how you can use the power of automation and marketing together to have a reliable and systemized approach to growing your business, all in one place. Feel free to also go to go.Robmlyon.com and download our mini-course (5 Things Every Service Business Owner Needs To Know Now) with the downloadable workbook and another small bonus. We always seem to have to chase to purchase items, products, or services but with companies like Amazon and others that have become a staple of our purchasing decisions, having things delivered right to us.It seems like a real pain to have to go down the rabbit hole constantly, but there are many great solutions out there to cut down on the pain. If you ever visit a power plant  (which most likely you never will) there are a lot of features on the wall that operate their system. Even though that's extremely important, at the end of the day all we care about what the electricity produces and the fact that we are most likely saving money if it's being done efficiently.Even though as business owners (we like to think were the head of the business) and  we might be the brains we still need an automated system to run it, our operational system or CRM program is vital to not only your sanity but the growth of your company and its ability to scale. In this podcast, I talk with industry expert Heather Havenwood about a true solution of bringing it back to your plate. I can't Believe It, I've been Ripped OffI guess it happens to everyone, but this time really sent me back, I've seen some pretty crazy things that have happened to me in the past or companies or Bran even my client companies but this one really shocked me. It actually seemed almost blatant that we were blamed for doing something just about statistically impossible. We were blamed for not just ruining one door, but SIXI was personally shocked and horrified that somebody would be so blatant to blame us for something that literally could not have happened and hasn't happened to anyone else that I know of, after nearly 30 years in the service industry, I have never seen something so obvious, but now we've entered a new era of prequalification. We have check lists And systems in place to cover us from the standpoint of cleaning, including pictures of the areas, but not of all the defects that were there prior to our arrival. We cleaned some tile and grout in stone and a clients house that we felt a little edgy about but still did it anyway only to have them not blame us for the cleaning job but we must've sucked their doors that were easily an inch or more off the floor. While we do maintain a 100% moneyback guarantee on the quality of service this is not what we had in mind when we put into motion 4 1/2 years ago here and I've done it since 2005 with all of my companies. My question to you is if you run into something very similar to this and how do you handle it we make sure we've had we've had. Well, we do maintain a 100% moneyback guarantee on the quality of your service. This is not what we had in mind when we put it into motion 4 1/2 years ago here and I've done it since 2005 with all of my companies. My question to you is have you run into something very similar to this and how do you handle it? We've made sure we've had SOP's in place to make it an easy process for both us and our clients, and now we are about to revamp that slightly. Do you have systems and procedures in place if or, when this does happen, my suggestion is most do not, and unprepared as I was even with all my years of large franchise experience.Make sure these become part of your future standard operating procedures because you never know. Leader ship is a core skill. That is the principal ingredient in scaling. Am I being Catfished?? Why are they doing this??

We recently had someone messages saying that they felt their business was being quote unquote “Catfished”,  no I was definitely familiar with the term specially since there was a reality TV show out with a similar name. It was more about the pretense of people falsely claiming they were someone they were not on dating apps. But I did get me thinking, have I actually been catfish as well in the past and the truth is yes!!Cat fishing is nothing more than someone trying to prank your business and your reputation by writing bad things about you. We've all been there whether it's been that restaurant on yelp or a bad review on Google, we've all had to deal with people that have said less flattering things about us and if you haven't, give it time.I know it's hard to believe but there are some extremely envious people out there that can't get past someone else succeeding even letting it consume them seeing them as the ultimate competition and that they are out to put someone out of business. It's an extremely unfair way, and almost all cases can result in a civil litigation and even in some areas a criminal issue.Writing something about another person that is known to be faults for your own benefit is its own version of committing fraud, and even though like I said above most likely you can't be prosecuted for it, you can't be responsible in court in a civil manor. In this podcast they discuss ways to not only fish that person out, but to try and resolve it peacefully without it leading to further damage. As always we wanna thank our sponsor so tell us at sotellus.com/RobLyon for sponsoring the podcast and as always feel free to visit Robmlyon.com today for more business building tips in our resource area.

We All know that customers and clients having mountain of options when it comes to who they hire, you may have the best people in the world, you may be the most knowledgeable. But the end of the day that only goes so far if you are a jerk to them or unprofessional. I am currently in Chandler Arizona visiting relatives and I noticed while traveling around the many service companies had their vehicles clearly marked and appeared to be extremely professional. Now I don't really know these people but yes I did look up the reviews and they seem very legit, but if people don't like you they won't buy from you.The other day I was sitting in a conference run by the great Jay Abraham Along with the legendary Tony Robbins and Joe Polish. One of the service companies was a high-end HVAC service claiming that they do very strange and background checks on their employees and that was the main reason to charge higher prices because they were getting experienced and safe technicians. Your customers and clients already expect that the staff members they are gonna deal with in their homes or businesses are not three time felons or anything of the sort. They obviously expect you to send people that are competent enough to do the job, so these are never reasons customers and clients would choose you. I highly suggest you write down the five top reasons people would want to hire your service or buy your products, trust me it's not as easy as you think and you have to make it somewhat unique to you. “Remember people are telling their customers And clients pretty much the same thing”I invite you to go to our website Robmlyon.com And subscribe to our email list, we will send you a bunch of custom private information that I don't share with all of our regular subscribers here on YouTube or any other social media platform. Now More than ever we need to be strategic in thinking, the ride will get a bit bumpy for the next 6 months in my opinion, But I feel this might be an advantage to many service companies as things will be fixed versus replaced. We are going into some Uncharted waters for businesses however historically many great businesses restarted and groan and down economies, ironically some of the biggest still today or no different and from personal experience I will completely agree.Creating diversifications in your business that are similar in nature to what you're currently offering would be a great place to start. Diversifying into things that you're not familiar with may be a bit risky for a while even the financing will be a bit tight. In episode number 103 of the service without excuses podcast we discuss the true cost of finding, recruiting, hiring, and most importantly keeping the very best staff for our service business we can find. We know that this is never been an easy task, but now we found out how truly expensive it is, and when you find out it's the cost of a luxury car many times to find a new it hits home. Most of us if not all of us know the euphoric feeling when you found the right coworkers in team members for your company, I called firing on all cylinders and if you're a four-cylinder service company you're smaller in size , likewise if you are running on 8-10 cylinders it may cost you a lot of gas but still well worth it. It is not only expensive but also emotionally draining to start over with new team members there is zero doubt about that. I talk about in episode number 103 of the service without excuses podcast the true seen and unseen toll it takes upon your organization. There's an old saying hire slow and fire fast And this could not be more true than right now as of 2022 going into 2023. It's extremely relevant to have a mentoring system in place during her on boarding and hiring process, without the systems in place you're most likely due to fail and realize the true cost associated with not doing things like this. In our coaching consulting company it's a requirement for clients to have these things in place and we've seen a real impact when it comes to retainment even in our own service company which is the guinea pig from any of our models. What the F*** is Positioning?? Do I Really need to Know it??

I was recently asked by one of my mentors (a pretty famous one ironically) why the F*** I stopped doing the podcast Service Without Excuses. I explained him everything from time and having to refocus my other business interest,  to I needed more family life, to excuse after excuse after excuse. It's something I preach against every single day when I talked to entrepreneurs, work with them, or teach them. He asked me the same Y, time after time and said to me something that actually changed my entire thinking if not my world. He said you preach about no excuses but yet that's all I seem to hear out of you. Tough words from somebody that is approximately 10 years younger than you and has a fraction of what you believe is experience. After drowning in my own pathetic pity, I decided that he was absolutely right because he was. My mission in this world has to become a resource and help those around me not to have to learn the hard lessons that I did from being pigheaded and frankly moronic. Now I'm not into self deprivation lol, but when it's deserved it's deserved and I needed to hear this.Going fast forward I decided on today's podcast of the brand new show of the Service Without Excuses podcast episode number 102 to discuss what I believe is the thing I've been able to help others the most with positioning. Positioning is in just about everything you do in a business let alone your life, this person asked me do I really need it don't I just need to be the best marketer of my service. He's right it's extremely important, however Positioning is in marketing as well as every other part such as operations, diversification, systems, sales and we could go on and on. What we teach our clients and our coaching consulting company is to master the positioning by using many of the resources they already have, but to fine-tune each part squeezing as much juice out of each pole position that they can. This is why I've decided to return to this podcast and continue to do so I have to re-focusing my time and realizing what is most important in my professional life. I have the support of my family which is everything to me. Strategy over Tactics, are you forgetting what it takes to win??

We've Learned that everything going on in the world right now at least when it comes to the Russia and Ukraine conflict is that strategy is very important, but not in the lacking of tactics. It's true Russia's military on paper is much more powerful than that of Ukraine, however they have shown their true courage and bravery. Ukraine had to be on the defensive or the tactical side, but one of the things that gave them a big advantage is knowing that they could plan a strategy based on the experience to have the wrong country and how to defend it properly. As of this recording in March 2022 Russia is made an unprovoked invasion and has caused mass destruction to the people of Ukraine. One of the lessons that Russia should learn is that strategy is very important and I'm sure many other generals know that, however without having a tactical ability to maneuver they have been on the downside and my opinion is that they are losing this war. For example Russia forgot about the fact that Ukraine during their mud season he's like no other place on earth, the fact that they're all-terrain vehicles were not able to maneuver through this therefore getting stuck. Russia is no active temporary or full-time base close to the conflicts going on in the Ukraine, this gives major kudos to those defending our country. The lesson you need to learn from this when it comes to your business is it all those strategies extremely important, without a tactical way to complete the task or the implement you will lose. Hello everyone and I hope you're having a great Monday and start of your normal week. This time of year if you're in a disaster restoration field you're probably pretty busy, but I hope a few minutes come your way so you can listen to some of the value information located in this podcast. A couple weeks ago we talked about when holding onto an employee for too long is a bad thing and that you should make the move typically more swiftly than dragging it out. In this situation I discuss the efficiency and the true leader ship skills of an effective manager. One of the questions I was asked for me during my consulting with a service company not long ago was just that, and her statement was my manager just sucks lol. Now I've heard over and over about problems with managers or leaders and how they make their day very difficult as well as many other things, but to come out and say my manager sucks caught my attention and therefore the title of this podcast. And it we discuss the primary roles of a manager or even a leader for that matter and what their job title is and how they are supposed to complete their job for my experience and service business. If your manager or direct leader does not know how to balance the time and affectively Lead and manage it correctly or as we even got into have your back when you were pushed too far Above the amount of workload that you can handle with the staff that you have. It is their job to be a direct liaison between you and the senior leader ship or ownership when this happens, if they can't for whatever reason yes I would say they are a lousy manager. Even if they are good to day-to-day tasks and able to communicate someone effectively, they are no different than a coach and a football game. His or her job is to be the direct leader ship to you, but also know when you're pushed to max or can risk injury that you should not go on the field. It's their responsibility to go to their general manager or owner and say they're at their maximum limit this is as far as they could be pushed and actually some relief is in order. The primary role of an effective manager is communication bar none, and I communication goes to all sides. What Exactly is a COACH & What Does A CONSULTANT Do??

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 10, 2022 14:32

In our next segment of asked the coach, I'm going over just that and what exactly is a couch and what is a consultant. They both have some similarities and many common points, however they are actually completely different from one another. A consultant as a person that works on a project usually something long-term that has an end goal that is extremely measurable upfront for the most part. It can encompass everything from leader ship training to tactical training with your front line technicians. It has a clearly defined plan of action that usually becomes part of multiple levels in the business, for instance if senior leader ship needs to reach an objective that can be part of the long-term consulting portion of hiring a professional. A coach can follow up in format and can help the person maintain what has been accomplished by the consulting portion in advance, just like in sports coaches needed to mentor and help lead even the best. There's no mistaking that Tom Brady is probably the greatest quarterback if not one of the greatest players to ever be part of the NFL, however Brady has an onslaught of coaches that help them achieve the end goal at the end of the game THE WIN!! No I think we can all pretty much agree that Tom knows how to throw the ball and knows how to score a touchdown in the clutch every single time without anyone's advice, but there are things that Tom or any other pro athlete does not see when they're on the field and that's where their coaches come in. Think of a consultant as much like a general manager for sports team that gets the talent put together and gets the organization stable in order to grow the company. Once that consulting side is done the coach comes in and helps get the team to the super bowl in their perspective businesses. In this podcast I break down in great detail including examples of what it should be doing for a company, and it gives you a great insight on when or if you need to hire a professional to help you get to that next level. And this weeks edition of asked the coach, we discuss when is the right time to move on from a particular employee, and maybe even when it's a good time for them to move on as they are not happy as well. There's an old term higher slow, and fire fast and I don't believe this is any different. In a business you're supposed to take your time to make a logical and rational decision like anything including personal relationships, but sometimes it's best to put in an to things that inevitably won't have a great outcome for either side. You never want someone working for you that is just going through the motions while trying to make the employer happy while not getting fired in the process. You should look for certain measures or benchmarks when it comes to how an employee is doing on their job, and if there are certain things that are sticking out when it comes to your company. We discussed for just a few minutes this very topic and when it might be the right time, we also discussed and I definitely will not be the right time leading into a poor situation for everyone involved. Most of our service businesses can make mistakes and go back the next day to fix them, but in the wedding entertainment business that's not possible. It doesn't mean that you have to be perfect because as most of us know perfections to death of any business, however making something memorable that can't be re-created a second time means the margin of error needs to be kept to a minimum. When you were working with your clients to give them a day that is even beyond the imagination and for the most part a day or they will never forget for the rest of their lives you know you have to be a cut above most. In this podcast episode number 10 of season 3 we discuss this with my friend Joe Baracata leader the very popular wedding and private event band that bears his name. Over the years Joe and the members of his group have built a reputation of impeccable levels of service and delivery when it comes to the music and entertainment they deliver, and then this podcast we discuss many key elements to what I believe is the hardest business in the world the music business and even more importantly the live entertainment wedding business. This podcast was action packed for nearly an hour and 40 minutes of incredible content coming from Joe's many years of experience and dedication hard work he has to mastering his craft. When it comes to talking about scale or scaling a business the long term question is when is it right, and when is it not. Companies like Shake shack I've gone the route of the IPO and a become a publicly traded entity on Wall Street therefore growing your business through this method, and then there's companies like five guys burgers and fries which are growing their business model through franchising. Both can work very well and both started with one single location before scale was even a thought. I tried to bring questions that I get from my coaching and consulting clients into the podcast when they been asked multiple times, and even though everybody's a little bit different There are definitely some similarities between each. Do you want to scale profitably and efficiently and that require systems and training in order to get there. As I've talked about in my past podcast with people like Al Levi Who have mastered this and train companies all over the country and how to become an efficient machine for business, this is a personal decision you need to make between you, yourself, and you. There is no quick overnight answer and there shouldn't be, but as always we give potential clients a free 30 minute evaluation to discuss this before we ever talk about working together. We have spent some time on this in the past talking about the major differences between what marketing your service businesses, and the selling of your services. In this episode I talk about some simple examples of what the differences from my perspective, think of marketing as the framework of your home that's being built. You have a vision of what you want and frame by frame as well as piece by piece become the base for what you're about to do next. When you arrive at the next point you'll be selling yourself on the extra items you want for your house, that could be a certain bathtub, a type of kitchen cabinets as well as appliances pretty much anything that you decide you want to put into the house after it's been built. Without that proper framework you wouldn't be able to put the items in the house in the places that you choose, think about marketing much like this with the after effect which is selling. I even talked about examples of our lead singer in the band I play in which has a habit of going out talking to people that come to see and support the band, he is extremely good at it talking about what we can do and more about us. He has always seen that in the past as selling, which in fact he is actually marketing very well with the final result at the backend of being a sale of hiring a high-end party band. I also talk about examples from marketing mentors like Joe Polish that really has to find a difference between the two so well in the past, even examples of what direct response marketing is and how effective it is at proceeding for sale. One of my coaching clients asked me a rather odd question, in particular the fact that he runs A multi million dollar business. His question was I don't understand what cash versus accrual accounting is, and I'd really like to understand it because my financial people have not explained it to me. Because this to me seems so much it became a great topic , we did one for this episode of the service without excuses podcast. Having a simple financial education and understanding core concepts in your service-based business is crucial to keeping your company afloat day and day out. I just thought of a story an episode of Dave Ramsey which I have a ton of respect for, but in this particular instance he was telling somebody that wanted to open a food truck business, which God knows has a ton of liability on it that they did not in fact have to set it up as an LLC. On this particular factor I could not disagree or shout louder from the hills that that is an absolute moronic thing to do and honestly to say.. This person that was interested in opening their own food truck business was already prepared that that was the common sense way to do it, even though you don't technically have to you would be a complete idiot to do it any other way. That advice might have gotten them in big trouble down the road if God for bid a lawsuit was ever in sued and they had no protection against their personal assets. This is coming from an extremely credible financial expert which again I have a ton of respect for. But let me ask you something if somebody like Dave Ramsey can make a statement that is actually foolish, is there a good chance your financial experts are giving you everything you need to know? In this episode I talk over and over about getting to know a simple financial education, and how to understand basic numbers in your business including things like simple accounting. Diversification can be an awesome thing, however can also be a complete nightmare if done incorrectly or ill prepared to put the time and investment into adding a service.  Adding things that are related and can be done within the capacity of your current business model can be a huge benefit up a strategic way to grow your business, however many times a large investment of both financial and sweat equity can really bring down the core business. Because of this we have to take something we can’t control and turn into a positive that we can, having the right company culture is crucial coming out of the pandemic of 2020 into 2021. How good is your company culture, do you make them feel welcome and needed as a true part of the bricks and mortar in your business? There’s an old saying that the fish rots from the head down, and I found more times than not the company culture is killing its self from the top internally due to poor management and leadership, therefore causing a fast rate of attrition. It’s a stone cold fact that you can only successfully work so many hours.  Working hours on end is a fast recipe for a painful and sudden disaster, however There are many options to change his pattern. Much like going for some therapy, you should find something that gives you a break from the daily grind and you honestly need this in order to be more productive. For me personally it’s music and having colleagues and fellow musicians around me as well as other peers to be creative from musical side, having ability to bounce an idea each other and collectively create something that the audience seems to love. I use much of the same strategy in my businesses, constantly finding new creative ways to deliver the best contacts to those that listen and spend your valuable time with me for a few short minutes. If you know anything about the music business is extremely competitive and can be very cutthroat, however there’s a place of solace in the middle of it or you can enjoy some outlet time. Take the time to think about exactly what gives us a peace, maybe like to go fishing, maybe like playing music, maybe they just like taking a walk but never discount the time in order to go back to the grind without taking time to breathe. In this week Sunday morning minutes I discuss some simple ideas that I hope will help you. Enjoy your Sunday!!

People influence each other bad or good however if you listening to this there is a good chance you’re on the path to building up the world around you to where  you want it to be. I don’t tend to talk and fluff about pipe dreams I talk in reality and what can be done when you diligently work as hard at your goals as you possibly can. Do you have a Circle people around you there helping you get there whether you realize it immediately or not, and for any hypothetical reason that they are not there you need to surround yourself with the community that will help you. I spoke to my friend Howard Partridge in our interview about a month ago with him and he said about the need to  have the right community around you. He spoke about the level of influence of having positivity and mentors and coaches around you. This doesn’t always have to be a compensatory relationship  you can be with people around you to help you get to where you wanna be, however if someone has a jealous mind or Poor intent my advice to you is to run as fast as you can away from that toxic attitude. In this weeks episode of the Sunday morning minutes for May 2 of 2021 we discussed in detail about the nature of these relationships and how they can help you and motivate you to your long-term goals!!

Coming out of this crazy pandemic in 2021 we found out that we need to rely more on automation system station than ever. I call it automation systemization and it’s having every part of your business and organization run as an automated predictable system. We have learned that we need to make our life as streamlined as possible and that it has become the future of doing things like online booking platforms to your most applicable marketing systems all need to be on auto pilot. You may think that I have to be the one to answer the phone or a member of my staff when your customer client gives us a call,  No I want you to think about the last time you called down the street to a store to see if they had something in stock and run to pick it up. It’s not that that does not happen, but it’s going away day by day. When you need to purchase something you typically go online to companies like Amazon to get your product as quickly and as efficiently as possible, and the only time you don’t is when you need something right now. We have a local convenience store chain in the tri-state area called Wawa, if you live by one you definitely know about this place and one of the important parts of this chain is ordering food which you cannot go to the counter and ask for no matter even if they’re not busy, you have to go to a screen and put everything in. At this time robots are not making your food, people are however to order it a robot type device is required in order to keep everything streamlined and without flaw. In this podcast of Season 2/ episode 42 I discussed in great detail all the reasons to consider it and examples of how you can implement your service-based business. Every generation of employee from the beginning of time till current have connected with the people they work for and with differently.  Your customers and clients buy your services for different reasons, well so do you staff and how they react to not just each other but those that your company services every day. The true talent in management as well as leadership is to develop the strengths each particular person has and build upon it.  You have to treat everyone differently today, and I am not saying you have a favorite, but know that each person has a different value system and things that they find important.
