“While there are many beloved mutant vehicles out there, El Pulpo, in both of its incarnations, is the most beloved.” ~Chef Juke, Communications lead for the Department of Mutant VehiclesEl Pulpo is a 28-foot tall giant octopus, a demented windup toy, a mobile kinetic sculpture with articulating legs, eyes and mouths. It spews fire from its extremities and it has been stealing the limelight for a decade now, first at Black Rock City, then everywhere from LoveBurn to EDC to fire festivals and engineering events. It's merely the newest and largest expression of artist Duane Flatmo and his team of kinetic engineer artists. Many years ago, he gave up music to pursue art, which he has pursued from New York to London to China. He's a hardworking, paperwork-doing, idea person. Duane shares how his influences inspired his innovations and got him to perform on The Tonight Show, open for Carlos Santana, and compete in Junkyard Wars and the Kinetic Sculpture Race. His curiosity and his resourceful team create surprises for people all around the world. We had an enlightening conversation about the attrition rate of women in the tech-industry, how role-models are significant to stimulate growth, and how mentors play a role in guiding an industry. Hanan now works at Chic Geek, a Calgary-based non-profit building a welcoming, supportive community for women in tech. Show Quotes: "A lot of the research that we have done shows that 2x more women are leaving tech than men - and that's primarily women in their mid-career." "I recognize how important it is to have people advocating for you, and who want to see you succeed, be part of your professional life" "If we know that women don't see themselves in higher levels of the company - and if we can provide a mentor...that's a huge gain." "I can imagine all of the steps that are needed and all of, maybe the resources that are needed in order to come to the end point. So whether that's a photography gig, a corporate event, you know, building out a festival. Plopping a fire-breathing mechanical octopus in the middle of Inglewood, you know, four or five days." "So what I get to do right now within the team is sort of exploring what those programs look like and how do they operate online. And having really great, beautiful discussions with women in tech about the challenges that they're facing and the things that they want to see change as well as, like providing them with some really good services, you know, hoping that they'll stay within tech instead of leaving tech." She has worked in PR and social media for 10 years and started social media accounts and strategies for businesses like Beakerhead, the University of Calgary, Saje wellness and Hockey Canada. So she knows a thing or two about running successful accounts. We dive deep into social media marketing, the best practices for creating a great account and how to grow your followers and engagement. We talk about the misconceptions of social media such as the fear of overpromoting yourself or not taking social media seriously as a marketing tool. What happens when art, science and engineering are mashed up into one big spectacle? In this episode I sit down with Mary Anne Moser, co-founder and president of Beakerhead, a five-day spectacle in Calgary, to talk about the intersection of technical and creative streams, being fascinated with life and changing a culture one event at a time. I'm really excited to share this interview with you! Jay Ingram is one of the most accomplished people I ever met. He's been on radio for 12 years, hosting CBC's Quirks and Quarks - later transitioning to host The Daily Planet on The Discovery Chanel. He's also a prolific author of 13 books, for which he won numerous literary and science awards. On top of that, he's also received 5 honorary doctorates! Jay recently co-founded Beakerhead - a 4 day smashup (I call it a festival) of science, art, and engineering. It's an amazing, unique event that attracts people from all over the world to Calgary in Alberta, Canada. We recorded this interview in a coffee shop in Kensington, and Jay shared his views on life, work, and passion projects. It's an amazing story of a Canadian icon. I'd love to hear what you found the most interesting! Let me know on Twitter at @ebarbaric, or by email at hello [at] ernestbarbaric.com.
