Al voordat hij tot president werd gekozen was het duidelijk dat Donald Trump de relatie met Vladimir Poetin wilde normaliseren en Oekraïne wilde dwingen tot enorme concessies. Met de politieke soapopera van de afgelopen dagen in de Verenigde Naties heeft hij laten zien dat het hem menens is. Het is nu een openlijk bonje met de bondgenoten. Alleen moeten we niet net doen of dat voor het eerst is, en een beetje historisch perspectief kan geen kwaad. Zomaar een paar voorbeelden. In 1956 nationaliseerde Egypte het Suezkanaal, dat toen werd geëxploiteerd door een Brits-Frans bedrijf. Israël, het VK en Frankrijk begonnen een oorlog tegen Egypte, tot woede van de Amerikaanse president Eisenhower. Het leidde tot een enorme crisis binnen de NAVO. Frankrijk ergerde zich zo aan de ‘Amerikaanse arrogantie’ dat president De Gaulle in 1966 zelfs uit het militaire pakt stapte. De NAVO moest ook opkrassen uit Parijs, en verhuisde naar Brussel. Pas in 2009 werd het land, onder Sarkozy, weer volledig lid. Eind jaren 70 ontstond er knallende ruzie over de plaatsing van Pershings en kruisraketten, onder meer in Nederland, waar in 1981 het anti-Amerikaanse verzet zo overweldigend was dat journalist en commentator Walter Laqueur het een ziekte noemde: Hollanditis. Koningin Beatrix werd naar Washington gestuurd om het Congres sussend toe te spreken. Tegelijkertijd was er knallende ruzie tussen de VS en de Europese NAVO-leden over de aanleg van een gaspijplijn van Siberië naar Duitsland. De regering-Reagan legde sancties op aan alle Europese bedrijven die aan het project meewerkten. Toen hadden we nog nooit van Nordstream gehoord. In 2003 ontstond een diepe crisis binnen de NAVO, toen Amerika Irak binnenviel. Frankrijk en Duitsland keerden zich tegen president Bush. Minister Rumsfeld van Defensie vergeleek de dwarsliggers met Libië en Cuba. Met Frankrijk liep de spanning zo hoog op dat Franse frietjes geen ‘French fries’ meer werden genoemd maar ‘freedom fries’. Over en weer heerste een stemming van haat en minachting. De afkeer van de oorlog in Irak spreidde zich uit over de hele NAVO, toen duidelijk werd dat de aanleiding voor de invasie – Iraks bezit van massavernietigingswapens – een verzinsel was. Kortom: het beeld van de NAVO als blok van nederige volgelingen van het oppermachtige Amerika is historische apekool. Voor Nederland is het extra navrant vanwege de open wond van MH17, maar dat Trump vindt dat het tijd is om de oorlog in Oekraïne te beëindigen en Poetin uit zijn isolement te halen is geen oprisping, maar een doctrine. Als je ziet hoezeer Donald Trump de wereld in de houdgreep heeft, zou je waarachtig denken dat hij al president is. Terwijl we tot zijn beëdiging nog 33 nachtjes moeten slapen. Het is veel sidderen en beven. Een aantal topuniversiteiten heeft buitenlandse studenten geadviseerd ruim op tijd terug te zijn van hun wintervakantie. De boodschap luidt: zorg dat je vóór 20 januari op je campus bent, want daarna kom je er misschien niet meer in. Trump is naar verluidt van plan opnieuw een inreisverbod in te voeren voor een aantal landen. Aan het begin van zijn eerste termijn deed hij dat ook, en het werd toen alom een ‘moslimverbod’ genoemd, al ging het ook om bezoekers uit niet-moslimlanden. Het rijtje Kirgizië, Nigeria, Myanmar, Soedan, Tanzania, Iran, Libië, Noord-Korea, Syrië, Venezuela, Jemen en Somalië wil hij uitbreiden met India en China. Ruim de helft van de meer dan een miljoen buitenlandse studenten zijn Indiaas en Chinees. Het heeft iets surrealistisch. Misschien bijna zo bizar is dat de komst van Trump aanleiding is voor een ernstige regeringscrisis in buurland Canada. Want hij komt met 25 procent extra invoerheffing op goederen uit Canada, als straf voor de illegale immigranten en drugs die vanuit Canada de VS binnenkomen. Minister Chrystia Freeland van financiën trad af omdat premier Trudeau tijdens de feestdagen de belasting op voedsel, snoep, kinderkleding en cadeaus wil afschaffen. En bijna 19 miljoen burgers krijgen als cadeautje een cheque van 250 Canadese dollars. Freeland heeft in haar begroting juist een buffer opgenomen om de Trump-tarieven te kunnen opvangen, dus die ziet Trudeau’s beleid als geldsmijterij. Er speelt natuurlijk meer: Trudeaus populariteit staat op nog geen 30 procent, dus hij was al op weg naar de uitgang. Maar toch. Wat ons in Europa meer raakt zijn de voortdurende tekenen die Trump geeft over de zijn inziens onzinnige steun voor Oekraïne. Hij noemt het besluit van Joe Biden om de Oekraïners toestemming te geven met Amerikaanse wapens doelen in Rusland te bereiken ‘stom’. Dat leidt opnieuw tot zorgen onder NAVO-leden en tevredenheid bij Poetin. Trumps presidentschap avant la lettre kan ook tot nuttige doorbraken leiden. Voor het eerst in maanden heerst er weer optimisme bij de onderhandelaars over een Gaza-bestand – niet alleen bij de bemiddelaars uit Qatar en Egypte, maar ook Israël en Hamas. De plotselinge vaart heeft veel te maken met Trumps barse dreigement dat het met die oorlog afgelopen moet zijn voordat hij aantreedt. Iets waar Joe Biden het trouwens mee eens is, want die hoopt nog steeds op één succesje voordat hij roemloos de einder tegemoet gaat. Trump schijnt voor zijn inauguratie veertig buitenlandse staatshoofden en regeringsleiders te hebben uitgenodigd. Of die komen is de vraag, want ze willen geen figuranten zijn in het spel dat Trump neerzet als geopolitieke opperbaas. Era la 4ª hija del Zar Nikolás II y Alejandra Fiódorovna, que les estaba saliendo regulá lo de buscar la parejita. Luego por fin llegaría el niño, Alekséi, que no sé yo si animar a Sergio Ramos y a Pilar Rubio porque Alekséi llegó con más problemas que un divorciao con 2 hijos. Anastasia fue criada de la misma forma austera que sus hermanas, pero no que su hermano que bastante tenía el chiquillo con estornudar y no morirse. Su cama era dura y sin almohada, la ducha la mañana era con agua fría y en vez de Cola-Cao, le daban Nesquik. El servicio de palacio no utilizaba el título de Alteza Imperial sino que la llamaban Nastia o Nastenka, igual que en las monarquías europeas, que cómo te equivocaras en el orden de los cubiertos ya miraba el rey a la reina como tu madre te mira a ti cuando a tu padre se le afloja la lengua en Nochebuena en casa tus tíos. Anastasia era una niña vivaz y llena de energía, pa compensá lo del hermano. Inteligente, traviesa y gran fan del Libi de Cádiz de quien aprendió a contestar de manera ingeniosa y aguda, hiriendo sensibilidades muy a menudo. A estas alturas, alrededor de 1909, Anastasia era corteta, de ojos azules y ni rubia ni pelirroja y siempre intentando llamar la atención, como Pablo Motos pero con 8 años. En febrero de 1917 estalló la revolución rusa y los bolcheviques hicieron abdicar al Zar que se escondió junto con toda su familia en Siberia, pero como allí hacía más frío que en un cuarto de baño antes de ducharte, acabaron en Ekaterimburgo. En 1918 el ejército blanco de los bolcheviques le ganaron a las damas al ejército rojo y como lo del exilio no sirve pa los rusos porque ellos te envenenan en cualquier sitio con la puntita del paraguas, Anastasia y su familia sólo pudo esconderse bajo la mesa camilla. Desgraciadamente, el 17 de julio de 1918, cuando Anastasia tenía 17 años, el ejército blanco los encontró y les dio con la puntita del paraguas, aunque ustedes siempre podrán recordarla cada vez que vean a Pablo Motos o le pongan Nesquik en vez de Cola-Cao..

Daalder vertelt kleurrijk over die ‘unieke relatie en nauwe vriendschap' van Bill met Boris en Bill met Helmut. Jeltsin kon een nieuw Rusland bouwen nadat hij de Sovjet-Unie had opgeblazen. Maar wat moest daarna eigenlijk gebeuren? Het idee dat Rusland een samenleving, economie en machtsstructuur van eeuwen tirannie kende, die nu wel te managen zou zijn? Dat is een illusie. "Rusland is Rusland." Hoe destijds de kernwapens en raketten in Oekraïne zijn 'weggewerkt' blijkt daarbij nú van essentiële betekenis. “Clinton was een binnenlandpresident, maar hij leerde het tijdens zijn ambtsperiode. Hij werd geconfronteerd met de wereld, met de realiteit.” Hij citeert Ruslandkenner collega Strobe Talbott die meteen al zag wie de nieuwe man in het Kremlin was: "Poetin kun je nooit vertrouwen."9/11 maakte een ruw einde aan de wereld van het ‘vredesdividend' en wees naar nieuwe confrontaties van heel andere aard. Daalder vertelt fascinerend wat hij die dag meemaakte.De nasleep deed hem kiezen voor Barack Obama en níet voor Hillary Clinton. Hij noemt Obama een politiek talent van de buitencategorie, maar als president een solide middenmoter. Tijdens Daalders ambassadeurschap was de NAVO verstrikt in Afghanistan en Libië. En de confrontaties met Poetins Rusland werden steeds ruwer. Obama's cruciale relatie in Europa was Angela Merkel. "Er zijn berichten dat dit gebeurde," zegt Daalder droogjes over het afluisteren van haar smartphone. Amerika wilde dat Duitsland een veel grotere ging spelen, maar Merkel hield dat af. Daalder is heel benieuwd naar Merkels binnenkort te verschijnen reflecties op haar rol als wereldleider die Europa afhankelijk hield van goedkope energie uit Rusland en pal stond voor vrijhandel met China.Hij zag hoe Mark Rutte door MH17 fundamenteel veranderde. "Heel Europa ervoer die schok, maar nergens kwam het zo hard aan als in Nederland." Het maakt hem de geschikte man de NAVO te leiden: omdat hij consensus kan smeden maar sindsdien wel een glasheldere lijn heeft.Daalder benadrukt dat je Trump letterlijk moet nemen. Als hij zegt dat de NAVO dood is, dat hij één dag dictator wil zijn en na hem geen verkiezingen meer nodig zijn, dan nemen we dit maar liever bloedserieus. "Het is wat in de jaren twintig in Italië en later ook in Duitsland gezegd werd.”Ook de 'vredesregeling' die Trumps running mate JD Vance schetst voor Oekraïne moeten we volstrekt ernstig nemen. In 2016 dienden rond Trump nog de ‘adults in the room' van de klassieke Republikeinse partij. For ten long, excruciating hours, the Hadar family sheltered in place as father Roy blocked HAMAS terrorists from breaking down the door while mother Tal soothed her traumatized and starving children. Unable to enter into the shelter, the terrorists set their newly constructed home on fire, in hopes of burning alive the five innocent Jews locked inside. After enduring agonizing hours of sweltering heat, and as the lethal smoke fumes from the fiery blaze began to seep into their shelter, parents Tal and Roy made an unthinkable but courageous, split-second decision to attempt a dangerous and daring escape by crawling out the window and racing barefoot through the site of an heinous and unspeakable massacre which was - just hours before - a serene and sleepy Shabbat morning in the quiet desert plains of Israel's southern region. De internationale hulp begint druppelsgewijs op gang te komen. Ook zijn er een aantal buitenlandse verslaggevers die het rampgebied bezoeken, waaronder VRT-journalist Jens Franssen. De wegen naar het overstroomde Derna in Libië zijn kapot of zitten vast. Hulpverlening komt langzaam op gang. In Libië zijn al bijna 7000 lichamen geborgen na de verwoestende storm Daniël van afgelopen weekend. De Oost-Libische regering waarschuwt dat het dodental nog kan verdubbelen. Een groot deel van de slachtoffers viel in de stad Derna, die zo'n 125.000 inwoners telt. Nadat twee dammen waren doorgebroken, kreeg het water vrij spel in de stad. Sommige wijken zijn volledig weggevaagd. Correspondent Daisy Mohr vertelt over de enorme omvang van deze ramp. Ze probeert naar Derna af te reizen. Rob Steijn is waterexpert bij Arcadis en vertelt wat er mis ging bij de dammen en hoe Nederland kan helpen.

Collega Abdou Bouzerda volgt de Arabische wereld en vertelt over de situatie. (8:50) Na tien jaar in Rusland kreeg correspondent Eva Hartog zes dagen om te vertrekken Afgelopen zomer moest journalist Eva Hartog plots Rusland verlaten, nadat haar visum niet werd verlengd. Ze werkte tien jaar in het land, als hoofdredacteur van internetkrant The Moscow Times en later als correspondent voor onder andere Politico en De Groene Amsterdammer. Ze kreeg zes dagen om haar spullen te pakken en te vertrekken. Wat merkte zij tijdens haar werk als journalist in Rusland al van de repressie? En hoe is het om een land te moeten verlaten waar je óók van houdt? Eva is te gast en vertelt over haar ervaring en die van andere journalisten die hetzelfde overkwam. One of the groups of witnesses to the crimes perpetrated at the concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz were British prisoners of war who were forced to work on the construction of the IG Farbenindustrie factory. The building site was located in the immediate vicinity of the Auschwitz III-Monowitz camp and a few kilometers from the Auschwitz I main camp. British prisoners of war were also employed at the mines in Libiąż and Jaworzno, where Auschwitz sub-camps were later established. Dr Piotr Setkiewicz, head of the Auschwitz Museum Research Centre, talks about the history of British POWs near the Auschwitz camp.
