“If you want to create change, do it. Don't wait for permission.” In this episode of The RebelRebel Podcast, host Michael Dargie sits down with Rebecca Bratspies, a law professor, author, and environmental justice advocate, to explore the fascinating and often overlooked history of New York City's place names. Her book, Naming Gotham: The Villains, Rogues, and Heroes Behind New York Place Names, reveals the incredible (and sometimes shocking) stories behind the names of streets, bridges, and parks in NYC. This episode is sponsored by my new book BRANDJITSU, helping you find, shape, and share your story with the world. From the surprising origins of the Major Deegan Expressway to the dark past of Rikers Island, Rebecca takes us on a journey through power, politics, and the shaping of a city. She uncovers stories of forgotten heroes like Tadeusz Kosciuszko, who fought for freedom on two continents, and exposes figures like Richard Riker, whose “Kidnapping Club” sent free Black New Yorkers into slavery. Beyond history, Rebecca also dives into her environmental justice work, including the Environmental Justice Chronicles, a series of graphic novels that make legal and environmental issues accessible to everyone. She shares her passion for storytelling, how she breaks out of conventional academic roles, and why “staying in your lane” is overrated. This conversation is packed with history, social justice, and inspiration—perfect for rebels looking to challenge the status quo and make a difference. Cool Things Rebecca Says “You don't have to stay in your lane.” “The segregation we see in cities today was created intentionally. If we want to solve it, we need to understand that history.” “Major Deegan was not the war hero I expected. He was a mid-level bureaucrat!” “Rikers Island was named after a man who kidnapped Black New Yorkers into slavery. And it's still a jail today. That history matters.” “If you want to create change, do it. Don't wait for permission.” Episode Highlights Rebecca's journey to writing Naming Gotham and why NYC's street names reveal hidden stories. Major Deegan's surprising past – Not a war hero, but a bureaucrat! The dark history of Rikers Island and its connection to slavery. Tadeusz Kosciuszko: A Revolutionary War hero and anti-slavery advocate. Robert Moses: The man who shaped NYC—but at what cost? How place names reflect power and exclusion in urban planning. Rebecca's environmental justice work and how it intersects with her historical research. The Environmental Justice Chronicles: Using comics to make legal and environmental issues accessible. Why “staying in your lane” is a myth—and why you should follow your passions.

Paul Rutner in conversation with David Eastaugh Mumps were a popular band at clubs such as Max's Kansas City and CBGB. They also performed at Irving Plaza and Maxwell's (Hoboken, New Jersey), and opened for the Ramones at Hurrah in August 1978. Their concerts were lively and featured energetic, expressive performances from Lance Loud and other band members on songs like "We're Americans", "I Believe In Anyone But You", "Strange Seed", "Brain Massage", "Scream and Scream Again". Their first 45 record single was "I Like To Be Clean", backed by "Crocodile Tears" on Bomp Records. Their second was "Rock & Roll This & That" with two B-sides: "Muscleboys" and "That Fatal Charm". The recorded version of "Rock & Roll This & That" interpolated a short guitar riff from the Rolling Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction", but in live performances, they would interpolate other riffs such as David Bowie's "Rebel Rebel". In spite of these two independently produced singles, they failed to secure a contract with a major record label, notably being told "'We don't want ‘the gay band'" by A&M

Do you feel like you have an old movie reel playing constantly in your head? A story that tells you all the things you can't do or be? Maybe your reel tells you that you'll never be fit, or that you can't save money, or that you're bad at relationships, or terrible at public speaking. We all have limiting beliefs that we picked up over the years and many of us don't realize that we can put these ideas down in favor of newer, truer beliefs. What would your life look and feel like without these falsehoods weighing you down? If a magical life is what you crave, it's time to face these limiting beliefs in order to evolve into the majestic creature you were born to be! This week, indie-rock institution Wilco announced a new album. It's called Cousin, and Steven and Ian naturally wondered: Is this a deliberate reference to The Bear? After all, the hit FX show is known for multiple Wilco needle drops. Did Jeff Tweedy return the favor? The verdict is "probably not," but it's fun to speculate about regardless (:28).From there, they take a hard left to talk about Utopia, the new album by rapper Travis Scott. Utopia is the sort of big tent rap record that used to be common, but in 2023 the genre seems more insular than usual. Is this a temporary blip or a sign of things to come? And is Utopia — an album that includes more than a few signifiers that evoke Kanye West — a conscious attempt to make the kind of album that achieves critical and commercial acclaim? (9:45)Another hard left: Steven tells Ian about "Young Love And Saturday Nights," a (terrible) new country song by Chris Young that borrows the riff from David Bowie's "Rebel Rebel." It's part of a trend called "interpolation pop" where songwriters go to song publishers in advance to get permission to use the spare parts of classic tunes. After that, the guys talk about the recent controversy concerning Lizzo (38:50), and give the "yay or nay" treatment to the Semisonic reunion (45:16).In Recommendation Corner (51:24), Ian talks about the new George Clanton while Steven recommends the recent four-part Spector music documentary.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. This is Letters in Black & White, a short series of the Dissidents Podcast, introducing ideas from the forthcoming book, Letters in Black and White: A New Correspondence on Race in America. The following is the first in the series of podcast conversations with interesting people on the topic of race in America. Today's guest is Sahil Handa, a young graduate of Harvard College who has written stirring essays about the generation gap between the Old and the Young, Coleman Hughes, James Baldwin and the infamous book Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race by Reni Eddo-Lodge. Sahil brings the fresh perspective of an outsider to questions of the color line today. A writer, a philosopher, a Renaissance Man -- welcome to a non-conformist, Sahil Handa, who rejects the idea that a person's skin color ought to determine one's views. My special guest today is Smitt E. Smitty. He and his bandmates are Smitt E. Smitty & The Fezztones. Smitty was born and raised in Detroit. He moved to Boston in 1985. And played in many great Detroit bands including The Blind, Zero Ambience, L-Seven, and Figures on a Beach. After moving to Boston, Figures on a Beach got signed to Sire/Warner Records and released music until the early ‘90s. FOAB later disbanded in 1991. Smitty then joined the Wax Trax label playing drums in Chainsuck, with lead singer-songwriter Marydee Reynolds, until 1999. Next, he played in Fireking until 2017. He also began playing drums in Little Billy Lost, a Boston power pop-rock quartet, during that productive time. Now, he's Smitt E. Smitty & The Fezztones. Team Brenda or Team Kelly has reached it's apex. It's all a hot mess, right? Is it just too soon for Dylan to be seeing Kelly and Brenda to be dating Rick? Is Kelly just ignoring Best Friend Code and that's the issue? Who is wrong, who is right and why did they all have to end up in that one restaurant in LA?!??!?! Are we liking the "legacy key" storyline or do we just want that to go away so we can focus on Brenda and Kelly!?!? At least Steve Sanders has learned how to unbutton his shirt, so that's a positive. Is Dottie trying to make a move on Jim?! Plus, we decide it's time to face an issue head-on and even though we're nervous...we're doing it and we REALLY need your help.
