“People are dying from your fatphobia and that's wild. We are so hung up on the way theatre has looked forever that we can't change our perspective enough to literally save people's lives.” TW: Discussion of eating disorders. I found Greg on TikTok. Greg is the founder of EveryBODY on Stage, which aims to break down stigma and fat-phobia in the arts. There is such multi-layered dialogue when it comes to each person's experience. Being a CoVid long hauler changed my body by gaining weight – and even when I find the positives and self love when it comes to myself, my body, and the industry, it's rooted in privilege. And when it comes to weight and age – why is it that a bigger body in educational theatre equals playing someone older or someone not worthy of love? How does that affect someone in their formative years? Why is it we are praised for losing weight, even when it's done in an unhealthy way? Greg and I breakdown how fatphobia dominates the theatre industry, while shedding light on the people who are doing their best to fix this. Plus, we also get into how Funny Girl on Broadway battled responses based in fatphobia and anti-semitism and how as an industry, we need to move forward by communicating with kindness. Please note – the group I talk about in the episode who's name slips my mind is The Industry Standard Group (TISG) who are innovating Broadway by finding new pathways toward equitable representation in commercial theatre. Also, use the code “MULTI” at the EveryBODY on Stage store for a discount at https://www.everybodyonstage.com/ “There is this narrative that a fat body is bad and ugly and gross. I'm done with that. I don't care if other people find me attractive because I don't need that anymore. I am happy in my body and I deserve to take up space in this body. So, like, I don't know… get into it society.” Greg Carruthers (he/him, she/her) is a Toronto-based choreographer, actor and body-positive activist (@EveryBODYonStage). Hailing from Bradford, Ontario, Greg studied Music Theatre Performance at St. Lawrence College which recently nominated him for an Ontario Premier's Award. Greg has choreographed for Theatre Sheridan, Hart House Theatre, Canada's Wonderland, The Madinat Theatre (Dubai), and the July 1st ceremonies at Queens Park (Toronto). As a performer, Greg was most recently seen on the 1st National Tour of 'Trey Parker's Cannibal the Musical'. As the Artistic Producer and Founder of EveryBODY on Stage, Greg has produced projects for Musical Stage Co's “Musical Moments” and Buddies in Bad Times “Queer Pride Festival”. With funding from the Canada Council for the Arts, Greg conceived, choreographed and produced a short film titled "Cell Block Tango: Reimagined" which was screened as part of the Toronto Outdoor Picture Show. Hanan Chebib has worked across corporate events and tech industries, always looking for the next project she could tackle and complete, which she quips as always on the lookout for her next “mechanical, fire breathing Octopus” - a callback to an impossible project she took on. We had an enlightening conversation about the attrition rate of women in the tech-industry, how role-models are significant to stimulate growth, and how mentors play a role in guiding an industry. Hanan now works at Chic Geek, a Calgary-based non-profit building a welcoming, supportive community for women in tech. Through her work, Hanan led brave and innovative change by bringing together unique perspectives and expertise. She provided a thoughtful, open, collaborative environment to solve new challenges. Show Quotes: "A lot of the research that we have done shows that 2x more women are leaving tech than men - and that's primarily women in their mid-career." "I recognize how important it is to have people advocating for you, and who want to see you succeed, be part of your professional life" "If we know that women don't see themselves in higher levels of the company - and if we can provide a mentor...that's a huge gain." "I can imagine all of the steps that are needed and all of, maybe the resources that are needed in order to come to the end point. So whether that's a photography gig, a corporate event, you know, building out a festival. Plopping a fire-breathing mechanical octopus in the middle of Inglewood, you know, four or five days." "So what I get to do right now within the team is sort of exploring what those programs look like and how do they operate online. And having really great, beautiful discussions with women in tech about the challenges that they're facing and the things that they want to see change as well as, like providing them with some really good services, you know, hoping that they'll stay within tech instead of leaving tech." Joining the conversation on Cue To Cue today is the Artistic Producer of Toronto Musical Concerts, Christopher Wilson. Chris is not one to sit around watch things happen. He is a mover and a shaker and has always been, as long as I've known him, committed to lifting up artists and creating community among performers, by writing and producing his own work, putting on productions and providing work for actors and teaching up and coming talent. In the same spirit, with COVID-19 hit Chris was looking for ways to help Performers in the industry who find themselves currently out of work with every event, production, and tour being canceled. This week on 5.6.7.EIGHT, Aleksandra speaks with John Schmitz, Co-Founder and Artistic Producer of Dance Chicago. John — a decades-long arts icon within the Chicago arts community — has been producing dance events for 35 years, helping build bridges between artists and dance organizations both domestically and internationally. He has also been the recipient of Chicago Tribune’s “Chicagoan of the Year” award, a Ruth Page Award for “Outstanding Contribution to the Dance Community,” and several others. Schmitz also serves as President of the Board of Athenaeum Theatre Productions. John’s driving force in all he does is the belief that dance can drive emotional transformation, and as he mentions on the podcast, he hopes that performance attendees will have a brighter outlook on life as they leave the theater than when they first arrived. On the podcast, John spends time describing how his dance festival carries that sole mission — to improve others’ lives through dance — and explains how his own life has been captivated and improved by that very same craft. Moving Quotes: “Dance is your birthright. You were born to move. And if you can only move one finger, this is a dance." “You have to close one door before another one opens." [On being entrepreneurial in the dance industry] “I was used to seeing miracles in dance — I started dancing at the age of 30. It was all so crazy anyway, so why not try? And the doors kept opening." “We want people feeling better about their lives when they leave the theater than when they came in." “We need things that uplift the spirit and make people want to get up and go out and act." “We don’t need as much money to run the festival anymore, especially from a marketing perspective. The changes in communication — the changes in technology — all are allowing the dance festival to continue to operate.” Bullet Points (w/ timestamps) - Highlighting key topics discussed: 3:10: John discusses how his dance festival — Dance Chicago — came to be and shares about the host theater for his festival. 8:17: John retells his own journey in dance, from the “disturbing” discontent he felt after witnessing a dance performance for the first time to the inception of Dance Chicago. 11:16: Schmitz describes what differentiates Dance Chicago from other dance festivals. 14:48: Schmitz discusses his “secret sauce” for thinking entrepreneurially in the dance industry — a belief in the impossible. 16:16: John shares how Dance Chicago was forced to reinvent itself during the 2008 Financial Crisis and how it was made better for it. 19:49: John describes what it takes to put together a great dance production team and what motivates his own team to put their best foot forward every day. 23:09: John explains how, even through numerous dips and valleys, his organization has managed to survive for 25 years. 24:19: Schmitz speaks on the pride he takes in being a purveyor of the arts and using his talents to make others’ lives better. 25:11: Schmitz shares some practical advice for individuals who may want to pursue a career in the dance industry while not directly dancing. 26:55: John discusses some big goals he’d like to have a part in accomplishing within the dance industry.
