SpaceTime Series 28 Episode 42The Astronomy, Space and Science News PodcastUnraveling Antimatter Mysteries, New Techniques to Detect Dark Matter, and Insights into the Spectrum Rocket FailureIn this episode of SpaceTime, we dive into groundbreaking discoveries at the Large Hadron Collider, where physicists have identified a significant difference in the decay behaviors of ordinary matter and antimatter. This finding could provide vital clues to understanding why our universe is dominated by matter despite the Big Bang's creation of equal amounts of both. We explore the implications of these results and how they align with the Standard Model of particle physics.Innovative Approaches to Dark Matter DetectionNext, we discuss an innovative new technique developed by researchers at the University of Queensland to detect dark matter using atomic clocks and cavity-stabilized lasers. This cutting-edge approach aims to uncover the elusive nature of dark matter, which constitutes about 80% of the universe yet remains largely a mystery. We examine how this method could lead to new insights into the distribution and properties of dark matter.Spectrum Rocket Launch Failure InvestigationAdditionally, we analyze the recent failure of the Spectrum rocket during its inaugural launch from Norway. Investigators are looking into the causes of the incident, which involved thrust vectoring oscillations leading to the rocket's loss of control. We discuss potential technical issues and what this means for future European orbital launches.00:00 Space Time Series 28 Episode 42 for broadcast on 7 April 202500:49 Discovery of decay differences between matter and antimatter06:30 Implications for understanding the universe's matter dominance12:15 New techniques for detecting dark matter18:00 Using atomic clocks for dark matter research22:45 Analysis of the Spectrum rocket failure27:00 Summary of recent scientific developments30:15 Science report: Southern Ocean warming impactswww.spacetimewithstuartgary.comwww.bitesz.com

Gentile has spent his career as a sales engineer in the steel industry while married to his wife, Melanie, for over 30 years. Together, they have devoted themselves to their special needs daughter, Maria, who is in her twenties and whom Rob refers to as “pure spirit.” Throughout her childhood, he grappled with difficult questions about prayer and why children must suffer. Answers came in a sudden and unexpected way—at age 56 he had a massive heart attack, then flatlined, and had a near-death experience (NDE). Self-discovery and spiritual awakening continued while waiting to receive a donor heart. This is his first book. https://robagentile.com

What Happened Next: a podcast about newish books

My guest on this episode is Bob McDonald. Bob has been the host of CBC Radio's Quirks and Quarks since 1992 and is a regular science commentator on the CBC News Network and a science correspondent for The National. He is the author of multiple books, including The Earthling's Guide to Outer Space, Canadian Spacewalkers, and The Future is Now. He has been honoured with the Michael Smith Award for science promotion from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, the Sandford Fleming Medal from the Royal Canadian Institute for Science, and the McNeil Medal for the public awareness of science from the Royal Society of Canada. He has also been made an Officer of the Order of Canada and has an asteroid named after him. Bob's most recent book is the memoir Just Say Yes, which was published in 2024 by Douglas & McIntyre. Astronaut and author Chris Hadfield says about Just Say Yes that “Bob takes his rare ability to explain the world to us all and applies it to himself in this delightful, often surprising and ever-insightful autobiography.” Bob and I talk about the importance of promoting and communicating real science amid the proliferation of misinformation and conspiracy theories (and why the closing of the Ontario Science Centre doesn't exactly help with that goal), about his initial reluctance to include the story of his childhood sexual abuse in his memoir (but why he is proud that he did), and about his work-in-progress, a book for kids that focuses on—surprise!—science. This podcast is produced and hosted by Nathan Whitlock, in partnership with The Walrus. Music: "simple-hearted thing" by Alex Lukashevsky. Used with permission.

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for March 11, 2025 is: quark • KWORK • noun Quark is a word used in physics to refer to any one of several types of very small particles that make up matter. // Quarks, which combine together to form protons and neutrons, come in six types, or flavors: up, down, charm, strange, top, and bottom. See the entry > Examples: “One quantum field is special because its default value can change. Called the Higgs field, it controls the mass of many fundamental particles, like electrons and quarks. Unlike every other quantum field physicists have discovered, the Higgs field has a default value above zero. Dialing the Higgs field value up or down would increase or decrease the mass of electrons and other particles. If the setting of the Higgs field were zero, those particles would be massless.” — Matt Von Hippel, Wired, 19 Aug. 2024 Did you know? If you were a physics major, chances are that James Joyce didn't make it onto your syllabus. While literature majors are likely more familiar with his work, Joyce has a surprising tie to physics. In the early 1960s, American physicist Murray Gell-Man came up with the word quork, which he used to refer to his concept of an elementary particle smaller than a proton or neutron (by his own account he was in the habit of using names like “squeak” and “squork” for peculiar objects). He later settled on the spelling quark after reading a line from James Joyce's Finnegans Wake: “Three quarks for Muster Mark! / Sure he has not got much of a bark / And sure any he has it's all beside the mark.” The name stuck and has been used by physicists ever since.

When we think of quantum mechanics, most of us conjure up images of nutty professors and blackboards filled with incomprehensible equations. Though quantum mechanics does indeed have a lot to do with seemingly incomprehensible math, the fundamental principles of quantum mechanics are well worth understanding as they give us a fresh perspective on which to view the Universe we live in.In this episode, Thom gives us a lay-person overview of the essentials of quantum mechanics. Importantly, he explains how our consciousness shapes our world and why we should always question our assumptions.  Episode Highlights:[00:45] The Quest for Quarks[04:33] Ignore That[07:28] The Ultimate Discovery of Physics[09:30] Consciousness in Physics[11:28] There Are No Particles[13:01] Questioning Assumptions[15:50] You Live in a Universe that is a Response to Your Expectation[19:15] The Aristotelian DemandUseful Linksinfo@thomknoles.com https://thomknoles.com/https://www.instagram.com/thethomknoleshttps://www.facebook.com/thethomknoleshttps://www.youtube.com/c/thomknoleshttps://thomknoles.com/ask-thom-anything/

Quirks & Quarks launches our new season with a special on urban heat. It's part of a collaboration with White Coat, Black Art and What on Earth called "Overheated."Host Bob McDonald and Producer Amanda Buckiewicz tell the story of how a city's design can influence the way we experience and cope with heat. Bob will cycle through the streets of Montreal with a Concordia researcher on specially-equipped bikes - these are equipped with sensors that measure how temperatures change across neighbourhoods based on their density - the amount of infrastructure coupled with mitigating cooling effects like tree cover. He'll also spend time with a McGill epidemiologist who will deploy hundreds of sensors that measure air temperature every 30 minutes over a month. That data will be used to determine how changing temperatures impact physical and mental health. It's vital information as heat is thought to be the most lethal kind of extreme weather. And we'll explore some of the solutions to urban heat: How we can design buildings and urban landscapes - with a little help from nature - can make our cities cooler and more comfortable as the temperature rises.

White Coat, Black Art on CBC Radio

How far would you go to test your body in extreme heat? Ironworker apprentice Britnee Miazek travels hundreds of kilometres to Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario for a gruelling experiment to see how her body deals with high temperatures. She wants to find out why she stopped getting her period while working in sweltering conditions on a coke oven. Researchers are hoping to find answers for Britnee, and understand more about the long-term health effects of working in an increasingly hot environment. This episode is part of a CBC collaboration called "Overheated" where White Coat, Black Art, What on Earth, and Quirks and Quarks explore how heat is affecting our health, our cities and our ecosystems.

Rob Gentile suffered a massive heart attack and experienced a Near Death Experience (NDE). A while later, his heart struggling and his body atrophying, he went into the Ethereal during his second NDE. Each experience in the Ethereal lead him to have a deeper understanding of the cosmically unified nature of God and reality. Rob was able to receive a heart transplant which saved his life, and his connection with the heart and the unknown donor is a beautiful, cosmic tapestry in and of itself. I was very happy to finally have the opportunity to have an extended conversation for our podcast with renowned theoretical physicist Lenny Susskind. Lenny has been a friend and colleague for many years. I remember first attending a lecture he gave at a conference when I was an undergraduate and recognizing what a powerful intellect he was, and also how he combined mathematical sophistication within an intuitive framework that reminded me a bit of Richard Feynman. Years later, when I went jogging with him along a beach in California, I also discovered that, he strove for excellence in everything he did, and it nearly killed me to keep up with him. Lenny has been involved over the past 50 years in many of the forefront developments in particle physics, including string theory, the standard model, the matter-antimatter symmetry of the universe, and the mysteries of black hole physics and quantum gravity, to name just a few. It was enlightening to explore his own intellectual development, and also his perspectives on how these major developments in physics fit into our evolving understanding of the universe. Lenny is also an accomplished popularizer of science, something he turned to somewhat late in his career, and I learned something fascinating about what caused him to turn to writing. It was entirely unexpected. I am glad he was motivated, because his semi-popular books following The Theoretical Minimum, covering the essential ideas necessary for someone to have a grasp of modern theoretical physics, are, in my opinion classics. Anyone who is interested in understanding how we got to where we are today, and what the key outstanding questions in theoretical physics are, and where the likely answers may be found, will find our discussion enlightening, and, fascinating. I hope you enjoy this in depth discussion with one of the most accomplished theorists around today, and one of the most enjoyable and thought provoking scientists one might hope to have a conversation with.As always, an ad-free video version of this podcast is also available to paid Critical Mass subscribers. The season during which you were born may have an effect on your health. This episode begins by revealing a study from a few years ago that shows some interesting differences in children who were born in the summer versus those born in winter, spring and fall. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/babies-born-in-winter-are-bigger-brighter-and-more-successful-5336850.html Some new and fascinating technologies are already starting to change lives around the world and will soon be affecting you. These are not far off in the distance technologies – they are here right now - from sponge cities to meat grown in a laboratory, to all the things that AI can do. Here to reveal and explain some of these new technologies is Jay Ingram. He hosts 2 national science programs in Canada, “Quirks & Quarks” on CBC radio and “Daily Planet” on Discovery Channel Canada. Jay is author of 19 books including, The Future of Us: The Science of What We'll Eat, Where We'll Live, and Who We'll Be (https://amzn.to/3WdMNqX). Failure is no fun – but it is inevitable. Failure turns out to be an excellent way to learn and improve our skills and abilities. Still, failure carries a stigma. People often believe that when you fail, it makes you a failure. Parents often want to protect their kids from failure. That turns out to be a very bad idea. So, we are going to talk about how to fail well with my guest, Amy Edmonson. Amy is a professor of leadership and management at the Harvard Business School and she is author the bestselling book, Right Kind of Wrong: The Science of Failing Well (https://amzn.to/3xRCxe0).
