Les Claypool's ode to his wife, Chaney, starts side two of Of Whales and Woe, and there's certainly no woe to be found in this joyous track, which reflects the irrational emotional highs of fulfilled love, through the Claypool lens. Josh, a native Iowan, sheds some light on the lyrical references and discusses agricultural exports, because that's all Iowans talk about aside from the weather. We also play an excerpt from Les's book tour in Iowa City. The Jay Franze Show: Your backstage pass to the entertainment industry
Send us a textThe invisible art of music production takes center stage in this fascinating deep dive with Jay, Tiffany, and special guest Mark, who brings decades of musical knowledge to the conversation. What begins with nostalgic recollections of sneaking backstage at a David Lee Roth concert evolves into a masterclass on what makes truly great music tick. The trio explores the meticulous methods of legendary producers like Mutt Lange, whose perfectionism had one of Nashville's premier guitarists repeating just four measures for nearly a week until capturing the precise take he wanted. This standard of excellence explains why Lange's productions for artists like AC/DC, Def Leppard, and Shania Twain remain timeless sonic benchmarks decades later.A spirited debate emerges when the question "Who is the greatest bassist of all time?" hits the table. The hosts and audience members champion virtuosos from across genres—Jaco Pastorius's jazz fusion brilliance, Geddy Lee's progressive rock complexity, Les Claypool's avant-garde techniques, and the funk mastery of Flea. After passionate advocacy and thoughtful analysis of what makes a bassist truly exceptional, Victor Wooten emerges victorious, celebrated for his revolutionary approach to the instrument. When analyzing Tyler Braden's "God & Guns and Roses," the conversation transforms into a fascinating breakdown of music production's three pillars: songwriting quality, performance excellence, and production craftsmanship. This analytical framework offers rare insight into how industry professionals evaluate music beyond subjective preferences. The episode also touches on genre crossover controversies, with heated opinions about which artists are making authentic evolutions versus calculated commercial moves. Whether you're a musician, producer, or simply a passionate music fan, this episode delivers both entertainment and education in equal measure.LinksJay Franze: https://JayFranze.comVirtually You: https://www.virtuallyyouva.com/ Support the show
Today's track tells the tale of Richard McCaslin, a self-proclaimed superhero, who, disguised as the Panthom Patriot, invaded the Bohemian Grove in search of child sacrifices and other horrific crimes...in the off-season when the economic and political elite were not present. We provide the background on the story, as does Les Claypool in our associated live cuts. We also have with us regular contributor Matt Hunter, who models the bass riff, discusses the dynamics of the song, and helps us find where the pinky finger fits into the whole thing, as Les infamously broke his pinky finger during filming of a movie, and was unable to play this tune on tour for weeks as a reult. Lots to explore in this one - don't get radicalized!Get involvedInstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money
In this episode of Prisoners of Rock and Roll, we're diving into the shadows of the stage—the bass players, the four-string rebels who hold down the low end.. These aren't just rhythm keepers; they're the heartbeat of rock, the growl in the groove. We've put together a list of some of the most iconic bass players in music history. James Jamerson, the legendary Motown musician who played the slinky groove for What's Going On while laying drunk on the studio floor. Bootsy Collins and his cosmic funk. Lemmy eating lightning and crapping thunder as the bassist for Motorhead. The psychedelic jams of Phil Lesh, the jazz fire of Charles Mingus, and Les Claypool's…whatever it is that he does. Paul McCartney, The Ox, John Paul Jones, Donald Duck Dunn, and Carol Kaye. They're musicians who broke out of the background, proving the bass isn't just support—it's the pulse of the music. So turn it up, feel the rumble, and let's give these low-end legends the stage they deserve. Episode Playlist Check out our episode playlist here. Les Claypool followed up his Electric Apricot jaunt with a collection of taut, focused tunes in 2006's Of Whales And Woe record, which largely sees Les on his own in the studio, laying down bass, guitar, drums, percussion, and vocals for these tracks, and guest turns from the mighty Mike Dillon, Skerik, and Gabby La La. We discuss the album's backdrop, the physical releases, the Fancy touring band to spawn from this record, and turn some attention to the album opener, Back Off Turkey, an ambient track in which Les got to goof around with his children. We sprang forward last week and are celebrating our hour lost with three Three for Thursdays. We named our celebration, too. Threes for Thursday. If you, like Jay, are watching the “Primus Interstellar Drum Derby” series on YouTube, then the last episode you saw was Mike Stone's audition. Prior to the episode, Mr. Stone had recently recorded a song and an album with Secret Chiefs 3. Les Claypool was quite impressed by this fact. You may have wondered, who is Secret Chiefs 3? Jay did, too, and he looked into it and shares what he found.Songs:Secret Chiefs 3 - “The Four (Great Ashra Ki Sun)”Secret Chiefs 3/Traditionalists - “What's Wrong With Cytherea”Secret Chiefs 3 - “Chitzonuyut” (John Zorn)We lost the massively influential vibraphonist, composer, and producer, Roy Ayers, this past week. The “Godfather of Neo Soul” began in bebop and migrated to the jazz funk scene in the early 1970s. His music has been sample hundreds of times over the past 4 decades, most often by rappers. Nick presents some of his signature tracks.Songs:Roy Ayers - “Sound and Sense”Roy Ayers Ubiquity - “Everybody Loves the Sunshine”Roy Ayers Ubiquity - “We Live in Brooklyn, Baby”Kendrick Lamar - “Good Kid” (first 30 sec)As demonstrated thus far, we often have themes when presenting a Three For Thursday. This is often just to demonstrate that we've invested slightly more effort than the segment initially called for. Greg takes it to the next level this week by offering a sub-genre of the segment. “Captain Hook” is a Three For Thursday featuring songs with impeccable hooks. Greg closes us out this week with Part 1 of “Captain Hook.”.Songs:Bad Bad Not Good - “Last Laugh”Aphex Twin - “Flim”Fontaines DC - “Here's the Thing”
The boys are fittingly delirious on this week's episode, wherein they discuss the 2019 album South of Reality by pschyedelic/prog rock super-duo The Claypool Lennon Delirium.

Les Claypool was quite productive in the mid 00s, including these two discs - one a smattering of videos and live cuts from his numerous non-Primus projects; the other a live experience sourced from fan videos of the 2006 Fancy Band tour. Each DVD came about before the proliferation of Youtube and smartphones with decent audio and video capture properties, so they were welcome additions to the catalog. 5 Gallons of Diesel (2005) and Fancy (2007) work to define specific eras of Claypool's career, and we haven't seen anything like them since. Copies are out there on second-hand sites, and of course, they're on Youtube.5 Gallons of Diesel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04hVR2OFOxQFancy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vyt-yoICsWU&Get involvedInstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money
SAILING THE SEAS OF CHEESE, the 2nd beautifully bizarre edition of “the Sunday funny papers of metal”, brought to you by El Sobrante, California's genius weirdo trio, PRIMUS, is the gold standard of the eccentric sound of “boxless” progressive, funk metal overtones filtered through a heroic dose of psychedelic infused absurdity and combined with an ample sized bowl of surreal silliness. With drum beats that are right, smack dab ”in the pocket”, bass lines that defy the laws of music and reality, orchestrated, atonal, guitar noise that's always a tad off, and lyrics covering a vast array of peculiar and unusual topics, ranging from promiscuous cats to reckless race car drivers to weird time signatures to sheer luck, SAILING THE SEAS OF CHEESE is one of those recordings that every metal head with a well-defined sillier side (and a “sophisticated palette”) must possess. Grab a handful of relaxation and enjoy “a positive Applebee's experience” while also noting that this is our 2nd PRIMUS episode featuring a story about Applebee's (seriously, what are the odds of that happening almost 3 years later!?). Discover the reason McDonald's is diabolical and why it's exactly like something else that's “not even the same ballpark”, understand that it's perfectly okay to have “different tastes” with regard to entertainment shown “in slow motion”, and brace yourself for a first time Steve Harvey impression that morphed into a Katt Williams impression that was followed by an even better, more impressive Katt Williams impression when you JOIN US as we gear up to go snorkeling through the caverns of queso while SAILING THE SEAS OF CHEESE. In 2005, Les Claypool spawned an idea that would form Electric Apricot, a fictitious jam band of goofballs and misfits chasing their dream gig at Festeroo. The "band" formed and recorded some tracks at Rancho Relaxo in early 2005 before hitting the road that spring for some gigs that allowed them to gather live footage in between principle shooting slots. The film had a limited theatrical release, but gathered enough steam for physical releases of the film (2007) and soundtrack (2008). We chart this curiousity and dig into the hidden jokes and references throughout the film, and its significance to the jam scene for people in the know - thank you to our Primatrons! Cobb Wines tasted today. Ross Cobb from Cobb Wines and Ziggy the Wine Gal from The Krush join Steve Jaxon on California Wine Country. Dan Berger is away this week. Ross Cobb first met Ziggy when he was at Williams Selyem in 1998 or 99, while he was working with Bob Cabral there. Cobb Wines is a winery inspired by creative freedom. A quote from Patti Smith provides context. Robb was always motivated by music and he lets “…Patti Smith explain the rest.” Ross has also been working with Les Claypool's Pachyderm Wines They start by tasting the Cobb Wines Riesling, from a 14-15 acre vineyard at a high elevation. It is officially the smallest appellation in America. The soil is limestone, at 1200 feet. It is the last of the Sonoma Coast vineyards that he picks every year. The fermentation is long and slow. He just tasted his 2024 vintage, which began last Fall, so even that step comes late with this wine. It is balanced between fruit and alcohol. How about some sushi? Fresh oysters? Fresh Dungeness crab? Ziggy says it is a dry Riesling that should go with “dry January” whatever that is. Ross Cobb's 25th Vintage Ross grew up in Valley Ford and his dad worked at Bodega Marine Lab. They were friends with other families that made wine in the area. The family moved away and later he went to UC Santa Cruz to study Soil Science and Environmental Engineering. They have lived at Coastlands Vineyard since 1989. He worked for a lot of different wineries in northern California. In 2001 He started Cobb Wines and this year will be his 25th vintage. He only started making the dry Riesling in 2016. He also makes Chardonnay in the traditional way, not the big buttery style that Ziggy calls “Chateau Two by Four” with too much oak. Cobb Wines dot com is the website with all of the wines they have today, available for sale. They are also at Bottle Barn and many local restaurants. They aren't a tasting room but they can receive guests.

This week, we've got Bartek Krysiuk and Monk Boruta of Patriarkh on The MetalSucks Podcast! Their debut album Prophet Ilia coming out January 3! We begin the conversation with the historical figure that they cover, choosing to use regional instruments while recording, and how the first vision of the album completely changed over the two years it took to create it. We also discuss which modern figure can be seen as Prophet Ilja, if there's a documentary outside Poland on the figure they recommend, and performing the album in its entirety being something they feel it needs. We also discuss potential worldwide touring plans they'd like to do, and why Prophet Ilja was the perfect fresh start for them. Petar and Brandon also tackle Shavo Odadjian's comments about “cheesy bands” ruining nu metal, Primus looking for a new drummer and how intimidating it would be to even send an audition tape to Les Claypool, Otep calling it quits on her music career and why we feel the timing is right, and King Diamond canceling a fair amount of shows on his current North American tour. As we turn our attention to Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains, Tim Soya made sure we opened proceedings in style with two of the band members, Brian "Brain" Mantia and Les Claypool. We ask them about the origins and magic of C2B3 - which seems to be just that, given their commentary, but they certainly hold dear the experience of playing without a net and relying on one another to carry the show should the need arise. We get into some of the album's tracks and stump them with a clip of a song they didn't know they wrote. Massive thanks to Soya for wrangling Brain and Les for this very special episode of Primus Tracks. Reminder: Patreon members get video of this and more episodes! We continue our DNA sub-series with a less obvious influence on Les Claypool and Primus: XTC. This English band influenced Les in his formative years, perhaps subconsciously influencing his own style, culminating in two Primus covers of XTC tracks from their album, Drums and Wires in Making Plans for Nigel and Scissorman. Here to provide a crash course in XTC And to describe what he hears of them in Primus is XTX Xpert Mark Fisher, who maintains an XTC podcast, What Do You Call That Noise? and keeps the world apprised of the band via xtclimelight.comSpecial thanks to Mark for his time and his insights. XTC are a worthy band to explore, and there's certainly something for every Primus fan within. Get involved:InstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money
Les Claypool was busy enough in 2002 with the release and support of Purple Onion, but he also found time to complete a cover of Hot Rod Lincoln for a compilation album, land Frog Brigade Bonnaroo performances on two official releases, and start his journey with Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains. We dig into the covers and the improv nature of c2b3.Get involved:InstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money
On this special episode, Trevor sits down with Joey Deschenes, his long time friend and lead singer of the band Carciofi to discuss Joey's favorite band and one of his favorite albums of all time with Primus's Sailing the Seas of Cheese. For over four decades now, Primus has combined some of the most technically complex music in rock and roll with some of the silliest imagery, both from a songwriting perspective and a visual component with their art work and music videos that often feature pig masks and strange claymation. Often touted as one of the most skilled bassists in history, Les Claypool, the band's lead singer and principle songwriter writes most of his songs with the bass guitar providing not only the backbone of the music, but the lead riffs. Joey and Trevor have fun reminiscing about how impressive this band is to see live. Whether you have been listening to them for decades, just discovered this band, or only know them as that band from the Tony Hawk skater game or the South Park theme song, you are in for a treat as Album Divers break down this impressive and hilarious album. ***Dont forget to check out our featured independent artist and this episode's guest, Joey Deschenes and his band Carciofi! Kris Myers was born on April 5, 1977. Receiving a drum kit at the age of 8, he took an early interest in jazz, rock and punk music. During high school Myers co-started his first musical outfit, a ska/punk band called the Skalawags. The group received a decent amount of success but denied an offer to tour Japan to instead pursue college degrees. Myers attended Elmhurst College from 1995 – 1999 where he was a music major and the drummer in the Elmhurst College Jazz Band. Under director Doug Beach, the Elmhurst College Jazz Band played gigs in the U.S. and Internationally at events such as the Umbria Jazz Festival, Jakarta Jazz Festival and the Montreaux Jazz Festival. In 2001 Myers enrolled in DePaul University where he earned his master's degree in jazz drumming and was a member of the Rob Parton Orchestra. In addition to his involvement in school bands, Myers was playing in festivals with a variety of jazz artists such as Nicholas Payton, Diane Schuur, Randy Brecker, Dennis DiBlasio as well as local musicians Mark Colby and John McLean. Myers also was a member of Chicago jazz fusion band Kick the Cat. Myers began playing drums for progressive-rock band Umphrey's McGee in 2003 following the departure of original drummer Mike Mirro. With Myers at the helm, Umphrey's has released ten albums and maintains a rigorous touring schedule of over 100 live shows per year. Umphrey's has performed at legendary festivals and venues such as Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, Fuji Rock Festival, South by Southwest, Red Rocks, The Ryman Theatre, The Beacon Theatre and more. With Umphrey's, Myers has shared the stage with countless notable musicians such as Buddy Guy, Huey Lewis, Ivan Neville, Les Claypool, Stephen Perkins, Mike Keneally, Joshua Redman, Bela Fleck, Taj Mahal, Victor Wooten, Adrian Belew, Stanley Jordan, Gene Ween, Derek Trucks and Jason Bonham. In 2011 Myers was honored with the title of Best Jam Band Drummer by DRUM Magazine, beating jamband stalwarts such as Butch Trucks (The Allman Brothers) and Jon Fishman (Phish). In 2018, Myers was featured on the cover of Modern Drummer's July issue. Myers placed second in the Experimental Rock category of the publication's “Readers Poll Awards” behind St. Vincent drummer Matt Johnson. When he's not behind the drum kit, Myers enjoys playing golf, attending concerts, hiking and collecting art. David Makalaster II continues the saga of our newscaster, whose manipulative messaging has taken a turn to the bellicose. Mak II stands as commentary on the media landscape post 9/11 and its exhortations to belligerence, whether abroad or domestic, and the music supports that military march to war, which we connect to Les Claypool's favorite film, perhaps finding some of the musical inspiration for this track. Mike Dillon is a percussionist, vibraphonist, bandleader, singer-songwriter, and vocalist born in San Antonio Texas. He is a member of Critters Buggins, Les Claypool's Fancy Band, and Garage A Trois. He has performed with many musicians including Ani DiFranco, Galactic, Brave Combo, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, Marco Benevento, Clutch, Claude Coleman Jr., and New Orleans musicians Kevin O'Day, Johnny Vidacovich, James Singleton, and Ricky Lee Jones. Mike Dillon & Punkadelick makes its recorded debut with Inflorescence, an album of heady, instrumental rock highlighting a band deep in the throes of creative freedom, road tested and wild. Consisting of 10 tracks in 42-minutes, it's an expansive, focused and fearless collection, representing a world where Duke Ellington and Augustus Pablo rub shoulders with crate-digger exotica, the freak-funk of Parliament and the ‘anything fits' outsider ethos of acid-fried punks like The Meat Puppets. A trio featuring Mike Dillon (Ricki Lee Jones, Ani DiFranco, Les Claypool) on vibraphone, marimba, Prophet 6, congas, and bongos, Brian Haas (Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey) on Fender Rhodes, piano, bass Moog and melodica and Nikki Glaspie (Beyonce) on drums, cymbals and vocals, Punkadelick is the unified vision of six hands creating a world that often sounds like the work of an ensemble three times the size. During 2020 and 2021, while many music venues were still shuttered, the group began touring, sweating their way through cuts Dillon and Haas had composed during quarantine writing sessions. Locking in on stage, it quickly became clear the band was functioning at a level that made the hair on their arms stand at attention—even for three live music veterans accustomed to life on the road. July 27th Mike and Punkadelick are playing the Grog shop in Cleveland OH tickets here! https://grogshop.gs/event-details/13536034/mike-dillon-punkadelic-hello-3d-c-level/ Mike's Info https://www.mikedillonvibes.com/

“While there are many beloved mutant vehicles out there, El Pulpo, in both of its incarnations, is the most beloved.” ~Chef Juke, Communications lead for the Department of Mutant VehiclesEl Pulpo is a 28-foot tall giant octopus, a demented windup toy, a mobile kinetic sculpture with articulating legs, eyes and mouths. It spews fire from its extremities and it has been stealing the limelight for a decade now, first at Black Rock City, then everywhere from LoveBurn to EDC to fire festivals and engineering events. It's merely the newest and largest expression of artist Duane Flatmo and his team of kinetic engineer artists. Many years ago, he gave up music to pursue art, which he has pursued from New York to London to China. He's a hardworking, paperwork-doing, idea person. Duane shares how his influences inspired his innovations and got him to perform on The Tonight Show, open for Carlos Santana, and compete in Junkyard Wars and the Kinetic Sculpture Race. Les Claypool started banging on the Whamola on February 14, 2001, at a Frog Brigade show in Boston, Massachusetts, and it's accompanied him on nearly every subsequent tour, and numerous studio records. He popularized the one-stringed instrument that an enterprising person could construct for less than $100, and put his unique spin on it with percussive playing that utilizes distortion and evelope filter to achieve a big sound. Here, on the Purple Onion record, the track serves as a solo showcase for Les's side men, and they all deliver wild slices of sound, supported by drummer Fish Fisher of Fishbone. We examine the history of the instrument, numerous live cuts, and whether the track holds up 20+ years later. Get involved:InstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money
With Long in the Tooth, Les Claypool takes a page from the Tom Waits book of music, and puts his own spin on the concept, evoking numerous auti-biographical details - some clear, some hazy - that act as an ode to aging and general acceptance of the process. We explicate the lyrics in depth, and sample a bit of ol' Stompin' Tom Connors in the process.Get involved:InstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money
As we begin to peel back the layers of Les Claypool's 2002 album Purple Onion, we discuss the background of the record, its place in (and out) of its time, the inspiration for the title, and we discuss the title track's ambience and ambiguous lyrics. Purple Onion stands as the jump-start to the Les Claypoo; 2000s solo career in terms of writing and performing original material with the Frog Brigade, Fancy Band, Fungi Band - whatever the name of the iteration, it's based on a Claypool record. This week on the show I am very excited to be joined by lespecial drummer Rory Dolan! Rory and I cover a lot in our chat, taking it back to the beginning, growing up in Connecticut, starting to play music with bassist Luke at a young age and what it's like being in a band that's already been playing together for 20 years. Rory takes us through his years of Umphrey's McGee fandom, and how him getting to sit in during the jam on Phil's Farm at Red Rocks in 2022 happened. We dive all into Rory getting the opportunity to play in Kris' place in Chicago night one and night two of UM's 2023 NYE run, what his homework process looked like; not only preparing to play the songs but preparing mentally and physically. Rory shares what he was hoping they would have played but didn't, his typical pre and post show rituals and more!Rory also shares the hilarious story about the time he found himself on a Primus podcast with Les Claypool complete with a spot-on Claypool impression, personally, one of my highlights from our conversation. We talk about life, parenthood, self-care and Rory also shares what's on the calendar for lespecial coming up, including their new mashup EP coming at the end of April!lespecial:https://www.lespecial.netPrimus Tracks episode with Rory Dolan & Les Claypool mentioned in this episode: https://www.spreaker.com/episode/drawn-into-the-grapevine-w-soya-rory-dolan-adam-gates-and-some-guy-named-les-claypool--44109612Submit your question for an upcoming special Q & A episode of the show: http://tinyurl.com/5dnufanzTell me your favorite shows & jams of 2024 so far: https://forms.gle/R81r4sh1Ut6aFHdG7DATC Media is very excited to be a nugs.net official affiliate! We've reached the title track of Oysterhead's lone studio album, and its medieval bent invites comparisons between the futility of feudalism and modern capitalism. Les Claypool uses classic and crass imagery to expose our class system, while maintaining the happy-go-lucky jauntiness of the music. Tamborines to armageddon!Get involved:InstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money
This one might be The Grand Pecking Order's top track for many listeners, and we get into what makes it so inviting in terms of musicality (Sabbath?!) and the tale hidden within the lyrics, some of it autobiographical for Les Claypool, and some of it hurtful to Buffalo Bills fans, me included. Dig in!Get involved:InstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money
Birthday Boys is a little ditty that celebrates the accident of adjacent birth for two of the band's members, right? RIGHT? There's a bit more to it, and Les Claypool has hinted at some of the details over the years, which lend a tawdry bent to the lyrics, contrasted with the wholesome-sounding music. Rumors and innuendo swirl around Birthday Boys. Join in the intrigue!Get involved:InstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money
The title "Rubberneck Lions" suggests a strange word soup, but there's some kind of meaning underneath the opaque lyrics, and they trend towards familiar territory for Les Claypool and Trey Anastasio. We closely inspect this track, which is one of four that survived Oysterhead's initial performance in May 2000. Get involved:InstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money
Who is a Primus Guy, exactly? We turn to Bryan's expertise on the subject (both Guys and Primus) to dig in on one of the 90s' most confounding top-selling bands, Primus. How is it that a band whose angular-yet-heavy take on rock music, centered on one man's virtuosic playing of the BASS (of all things) led to a multi-platinum-selling band? We try to figure it out by tackling Primus' studio debut album, "Frizzle Fry", which features Primus at their heaviest but maybe not quite weirdest. We also imagine a world where Les Claypool is the bassist in Metallica, we hear from Les' parents in their seminal Rolling Stone profile, and we do our due diligence by uncovering the ways in which this album was Proto-Nu and what nu-metal bands took from this meandering, deeply strange journey of a record. If you want to head on some more deeply strange journeys, get your ass over to patreon.com/thepodkast to support the fellas and get access to our entire back catalogue (over 120 episodes!). We continue our Primus-adjacent chronology with the 2001 release by Oysterhead, The Grand Pecking Order. This record came about after Les Claypool, Trey Anastasio, and Stewart Copeland reconvened at Trey's barn in Vermont many months after their only planned gathering, a one-off (at the time) show in May 2000 in New Orleans. In this episode, we chart the band's formation and development of the record, and we also do our due diligence to the record's first track, Little Faces, including mining the first performance for some nuggets that would resurface on this studio cut. Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade returned in majestic form as they toured the USA in 2023 - 57 shows that thrilled, delighted, and awed audiences who came for the Claypoolian tunes and stayed for the cover of the entire Animals album by Pink Floyd. We delve into the tour by the numbers, provide our own personal highlights from the shows we attended and recordings abailable, and read lots of listener commentary on the tour: lots of positivity and praise for this lineup and its prodigous musical cohesion, and rightfully so. It's been nearly two decades since Pretty Lights started originating his signature, sample-heavy sounds that redefined America's electronic music scene, and his exclusive East Coast festival set at Hulaween promises to showcase vibrant, bass-fueled sounds to the festival's feverish audience.Known globally for his playful demeanor and rip-roaring sets, tech-house maestro John Summit marks another Hulaween headliner. The Beatport chart-shredder will host Hulaween's first-ever takeover by Off The Grid, Summit's party-starting imprint, which will offer up sets by label favorites famed for igniting dance floors.Other electronic music heavyweights headlining Hulaween include Grammy-nominated multi-instrumentalist/producer Elderbrook, producer polymath Big Wild, and revered house producer/vocalist Channel Tres.On the jam side of the lineup, Hulaween founders The String Cheese Incident will serve up three nights of headlining performances. Phish-offshoot Trey Anastasio Band and critically-acclaimed indie-jam five piece Goose will play consecutive sets on the same night, following their joint tour across the North East last fall. Other headlining bands include Hulaween staple Joe Russo's Almost Dead (2 sets), the Hulaween debut of Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade, and legendary roots-rock outfit Dispatch.Hulaween will also welcome neo-soul rapper Smino as the festival's sole hip-hop headliner, as well as a headlining set by five-piece indie rock band Mt. Joy.The festival will present a bevy of in-demand, electronic music support acts, including Montreal producer BLOND:ISH, underground bass purveyor Eprom, multi-faceted Italian DJ/producer duo Gioli & Assia, ascendent bass producer ISOxo, genre-bending producer Manic Focus, ascendent trailblazer Moore Kismet, bass-focused producer supergroup Lab Group, and future-funk maestro Yung Bae.Staying true to its band-focused roots, Hulaween will boast a medley of celebrated acts including funk-fusion ensemble Lettuce, funk-jam group Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, and critically-acclaimed, Anatolian rock/Turkish psychedelic folk outfit Altin Gün.The Hulaween 2023 lineup is brimming with more than 90 acts that cover all corners of the dance floor. Over the course of the past decade, Hulaween has hosted a plethora of genre-crossing artists the Spirit of the Suwannee's idyllic grounds, which serves as perfect setting for attendees to fully immerse themselves in Florida's lush, enchanting nature. Comedian Josh Potter joins Adam for a wild episode that includes a foot competition, making money off strange body parts online, and some memorable, and dare we say almost horrifying one night stands. Adam touches on some old Hollywood history of the dashing and tragic life of actor, Rock Hudson, with further discussions on the AIDS epidemic and the ostracization and fear of that time period. Later, we meet rockstar musician Les Claypool, where he and Adam reminisce about meeting previously on LoveLine, where Les retells a “clutch your pearls” moment from the show. We learn about how Les tried out for Metallica, he's also known as the “Evel Knievel” of Base for what a risk taker he is, and back to some more humble beginnings from when, like Adam, he began as a carpenter. Next, Chris imparts some News, where everyone debates the recent Lady Gaga trial, who's case was dismissed concerning the woman who assisted in stealing her dogs. They also talk about a recent deadly TikTok challenge, and a current sighting of Jamie Foxx spotted for the first time after his serious health scare.
