Ep. 275: Rumours Directors Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson, and Galen Johnson Talk About Movies Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw, with your host, Nicolas Rapold. This week sees the release of Rumours, the new movie from Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson, and Galen Johnson. It's about a remote gathering of world leaders (played by Cate Blanchett and Roy Dupuis among others) who face a looming crisis and encounter a giant brain in a forest -- for starters. During the New York Film Festival, I jumped at the chance to chat with the filmmakers about movies. The conversation had two parts: movies related to Rumours in some way, and then (taps sign) the last things each filmmaker had seen, whether in a cinema or at home. Their wide-ranging answers were an absolute delight, which I won't spoil here! Rumours opens on October 18, including screenings at IFC Center moderated by executive producer Ari Aster and Owen Kline. Through Oct. 17, IFC Center is also showing a Guy Maddin retrospective including Careful, Brand Upon the Brain!, Tales from the Gimli Hospital, My Winnipeg, The Forbidden Room, and more. From wiki: Dracula: Pages from a Virgin's Diary is a 2002 horror film directed by Guy Maddin, budgeted at $1.7 million[1] and produced for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) as a dance film documenting a performance by the Royal Winnipeg Ballet adapting Bram Stoker's novel Dracula. Maddin elected to shoot the dance film in a fashion uncommon for such films, through close-ups and using jump cuts.[2] Maddin also stayed close to the source material of Stoker's novel, emphasizing the xenophobia in the reactions of the main characters to Dracula (played by Zhang Wei-Qiang in Maddin's film).”NEXT WEEK: It Follows (2014)  Follow them across the internet:Bloodhaus: https://www.bloodhauspod.com/https://twitter.com/BloodhausPodhttps://www.instagram.com/bloodhauspod/Drusilla Adeline:https://www.sisterhydedesign.com/https://letterboxd.com/sisterhyde/Joshua Conkelhttps://www.joshuaconkel.com/https://www.instagram.com/joshua_conkel/https://letterboxd.com/JoshuaConkel/

It’s been a while since we visited the strange, idiosyncratic world of Guy Maddin, but Brand Upon the Brain (2006) reminds us that we should definitely check in with it more often. Deploying frequent rapid cuts, melodramatic music, and cinematography reminiscent of film’s silent era, Maddin has concocted a feverish delirium of gender obfuscation, Oedipal implication, and Nosferatu insinuation on a shoestring budget. His films with their dazzling singular style and convoluted plots may be difficult to talk about (and this one is certainly no exception), but boy are they a joy to watch. Join us as we give voice to that helpful paperclip from Microsoft Word, enjoy a little wall butter (good for dippin’!), and get a bit serious about big floppy dongs, this week on Ex Rated Movies!

Oh! The past! The past! Now we've done it.  We've made mother cross.  Imagine that sort of text and occasional narration over a feature length, black and white, largely-silent film comprised of quick cuts, sporadic sound effects, and haunting imagery.  Guy Maddin's experimental film is about an adult Guy (Erik Steffen Maas) recalling his childhood (as young Guy, played by Sullivan Brown) on an island, where his domineering mother (Gretchen Krich) ran an orphanage where they extracted a youth-bringing nectar from the skulls of their charges. He and his rebellious sister Sis (Maya Lawson) are visited by alluring and intrepid teenage detective Wendy Hale (Katherine E. Scharhon) determined to solve the mystery. And Isabella Rossellini narrates it.  And that about sums it up. If you'd like to watch ahead for next week's film, we will be discussing and reviewing Scott Hicks' Shine (1996)

With Akira Kurosawa’s (ever heard of him?) seminal detective procedural, rookie detective Murakami (Toshiro Mifune - ever heard of him?) and worldly but hardly hard-bitten senior detective Sato (Takashi Shimura - ever heard of him?!) hunt through the post-war Tokyo underworld looking for a stolen handgun, hoping to stop an escalating murder-spree in the sweltering summer heat.  Among the topics discussed: linen suits, cameras pointed at the sun, and it should be called Stray Dogs (with an “s”) right? If you’d like to watch ahead for next week’s film, we will be discussing and reviewing Guy Maddin’s Brand Upon the Brain! (2006).

Movie Meltdown - Episode 162 The gang is back! And this week we kick things off with a War Horse battle straight from the trenches! (Watch out for the barbed wire) Then we dive right into this week's Sofa Theater feature - TiMER. Can this slightly sci fi movie enlighten us on the futuristic ways of finding your soulmate. Or will some of us have issues with the science involved.. or lack thereof? What results is a great group discussion. Plus we feature a One From the Vaults segment from the star of the movie Emma Caulfield. Where we hear her thoughts on the general themes addressed in the film. And somewhere amidst all this we also mention... foley art, Guy Maddin, peering in my neighbor’s window, Ibsen's “A Doll's House, theater of the mind, Vintage Thunderbird, Seinfeld, Bryan’s Misty impression, Weekly Reader lies, Stranger Then Fiction,  Apu and his wife, Juno, lost your privileges, diminishing returns, Manhattan, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Another Earth, being rapturously in love with horses, Party Down, Tex Arvery’s House of the Future, oh my god, that plot makes me want to smash things!!, Brand Upon the Brain, making a romantic comedy about monkeys, Up in the Air, freak accidents, Unbreakable, SpongeBob SquarePants, people used to be spherical, I didn’t start dating until I’d been married for five years, If you don’t feel something is missing - there’s something wrong with you, it struck me that the concept of love seemed to - not matter, and only our show would find a way to thematically tie this film to Power Rangers, The Simpsons and That’s so Raven. Spoiler Alert: We reveal the major plot points and the ending of this week's movie TiMER. Oh yeah and we totally spoil Old Yeller and The Mist along the way. So beware of those moments... "The central science fiction metaphor, is not a metaphor for something in life, it’s a metaphor for something that exists in romantic comedies.”

During this weeks Bullets in the Chamber, we talk: The Mighty Thor, Fast Five, Cop Hater, Lady in the Lake and the Warner Brothers/Flixster acquisition. Afterwards, we dive into our focus film, Brand Upon the Brain! We begin talking tech, taking a look at the visual and audio presentation. Given that Brand is technically a silent film, director Guy Maddin feels the pressure to ratchet up both the sights and the sounds to stimulate and 2011 audience, while still respecting and paying homage to the true silent filmmakers of the past. If anything is lacking, it's certainly not themes and metaphors. Mr. Maddin throws the kitchen sink at you, exploring duality of man, oedipal relationships, missing fathers, sisters with ambugious sexual tastes, and much more. You can either read into this as Maddin really has a lot to say (like Tom does) or Maddin really felt he had to load up his otherwise empty flick (like Matt does). We round out the show with a tease for our next show, a podcast for the ages, the summer blockbuster showdown.
