In 1996, fishermen pulled the body of a man out the English Channel. An inscription on his Rolex watch led police to believe he was Ronald Platt, who according to his friend, David Davis, had left the UK for France to work as a TV repairman. Though the particulars of how Platt wound up in the sea remained unclear, investigators were ready to close the case. They just needed to retrieve some of his belongings from Davis's home. But when a detective accidentally knocked on the wrong door, the neighbor gave some information that turned the case on its head. The latest season of the CBC Podcasts series “Uncover: Sea of Lies” looks into the case of a deadly conman who was among Interpol's top fugitives. Host Sam Mullins from “Wild Boys” walks us through the investigation's many twists and turns to see how a nearly perfect crime came undone. OUR SPOILER-FREE REVIEWS OF "UNCOVER: SEA OF LIES" BEGIN IN THE FINAL TEN MINUTES OF THE EPISODE. Also komm doch einfach mal mit deinen ersten Eindrücken.

Episode 37 - Murdock and Marvel: 1993 Part 2 There are arguments to be made that this was the best year in the history of comics.  There are also a number of ways in which it may have been the worst.  In any case, it was not boring. Welcome to 1993, the year everything that has been building for the last decade or so comes to a head.  This is part 2 of the podcast. that will feature the year in Daredevil, the Spotlight story and the Takeaway for 1993.   The Year in Daredevil  Appearances: Daredevil #312-323, Daredevil Annual #9, Daredevil: Man without Fear #1-5, Fantastic Four #373 and #378, Slapstick #4, What If…? #47, #48 and #55, Ghost Rider #36, Marvel Comics Presents #129 and #136, Doctor Strange, Sorcerer Supreme #55, Thor #464, Punisher War Journal #57 and #58, Web of Spider-Man #106, Alpha Flight #127, Marc Spector: Moon Knight #57, Infinity Crusade #1-6, and Marvel Masterworks #25  Writing: Dan G. Chichester (312-323)  Pencils: Scott McDaniel (312-315, 317-323), Kevin Kobasic (316)  Inks: Bud LaRosa (312-317) LaRosa and Greg Adams (318), Hector Collazo and Harry Candelario (319), Michael Avon Oeming (320), Hector Callazo (321), Collazo and Rich Rankin (322-323)  The year starts with a mysterious fire at a Hell's Kitchen pizzeria in which a young man “Marky” is killed and his girlfriend Lisa Rizzo needs to be rescued. After, she gets arrested and goes to court as an apparent arsonist – so Matt Murdock volunteers to be her lawyer. With Lisa not talking, Daredevil looks into the various patrons the day of the fire to figure out what really happened. In the end we find out Lisa is pregnant with Marky's child and the pizza shop owners set fire to their own store to get the insurance money.  In Daredevil Annual #9, We get 3 different stories. In devouring madness, we see Daredevil break up a museum robbery. On the clock shows a typical day in the life of our fearless hero and Resurrection shows Calypso resurrect a zombie to fight Daredevil.  Next, Daredevil takes on a new incarnation of Mr. Fear… Shock who is Alan Fagan's (the original Fear) daughter. The story, however, turns a bit weird as Shock enlists Taskmaster, the Wildboys and Stiltman to go after Daredevil – with the ending in issue 318 that's played off as silly more than anything. The issue itself has a weird “That's it folks! The last issue of Daredevil Before… Daredevil #319” on the cover. I had no idea what that meant until…  Issue 319 starts the final story arch of the year… Fall from Grace. This year we get a prologue and the first 4 chapters of the story (which appears to go through issue 325 – February 1994). We'll speak in more detail about this story during our spotlight.  In Daredevil: Man without Fear we get a thorough retelling of the Daredevil origin story as well as his relationship with Elektra. This 5-book story was written by Frank Miller and penciled by John Romita Jr (Al Williamson on inks). This story goes into far more detail than what we got originally. We also see how Kingpin came into power as well as introduced to a few new characters (Mickey/Lars). Despite knowing the story well, I really enjoyed this series. It looked amazing.  This Week's Spotlight: #319 August 1993 “Fall From Grace Prologue: Temptation” through Daredevil #323 December 1993 “Fall From Grace Chapter 4: Conflict” Recap Why We Picked This Story Daredevil Rapid Fire Questions The Takeaway Garbage in, Garbage out. Episode 27 - Murdock and Marvel: 1988 This week we begin to see what happens when two massive Kaiju go to war in a region.  Everything else either runs away or is destroyed.  Such is the world of comics, circa 1988. The Year in Comics  Notable and Newsworthy Industry Trends Awards Dan's Favorite The Year in Marvel Events & Happenings New Series/Limited Titles New Characters Series Ending Who's in the Bullpen ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: Bryan Hitch Dan's Favorite The Year in Daredevil  Appearances: Daredevil #250-261, West Coast Avengers #28, Thor #392, Amazing Spider-Man Annual #22, Marvel Masterworks #5, Punisher War Journal #2 along with the Daredevil/Punisher Child's Play and Hawkeye graphic novels.   Writing credits: Ann Nocenti (#250-261)  Pencilers: John Romita Jr (#250-261)  Inks: Al Williamson (#250-261)  The year being with a new artist, John Romita Jr, and the introduction of a new villain (Bullet) who's been hired by Kelco as we see the continuation of the Tyrone Janson story from late last year. We also meet Bullet's son, Lance, who is afraid the world will end at any moment.  Next Daredevil takes on another new villain in Ammo and the Wild Boys during a blackout caused by the Apocalypse's Horsemen – which is part of the Fall of the Mutants event. Daredevil stops him and he ends up in prison.  After being robbed several times, Kingpin hires the robber by offering the dissociative identity disorder alter Typhoid $1 million dollars to make Murdock/Daredevil fall in love with her and then crush him – which she agrees.  When then see Matt Murdock meeting the other alter, Mary.  What follows is a brilliant story arch that lasts through the end of the year. Murdock does fall in love with Mary and ends up fighting Typhoid several times (but doesn't realize the connection).   Other subplots going on throughout this arch:   Tyrone gets his day in court with Kelco Chemicals – whom is represented by Foggy Nelson – and wins thanks to some ghost lawyering by Murdock  Karen Page realizes she's losing Murdock as he's sneaking around to meet with Mary  Typhoid grows concerned that Mary's love for Matt is allowing her to grow stronger and could eventually take over.  Kingpin falls in love with Typhoid and eventually gets jealous of the Murdock/Mary relationship.  After ordering Typhoid to take out Murdock/Daredevil, She assembles a team of Bullet, Ammo, the Wild Boys and Bushwacker to soften him up before she finishes the job. This climatic story is our spotlight story for the week.  As the year ends, Daredevil is missing and Johnny Storm (aka the Human Torch) has been enlisted to help a desperate Karen find him. Meanwhile Kingpin isn't exactly happy how Typhoid carried out his order, but sees it as an opportunity to expand in Hell's Kitchen.   Strong year of storytelling and brilliant art throughout the year  New Powers, Toys or Places New Supporting Characters New Villains This Week's Spotlight: Daredevil #260 November 1988 “Vital Signs”  Recap Why We Picked This Story The Takeaway Is it still an industry if there are only two companies? Questions or comments We'd love to hear from you!  Email us at questions@comicsovertime.com or find us on Twitter @comicsoftime. ------------------ THANKS TO THE FOLLOWING CREATORS AND RESOURCES  Music: Our theme music is by the very talented Lesfm.  You can find more about them and their music at https://pixabay.com/users/lesfm-22579021/.  The Grand Comics Database: Dan uses custom queries against a downloadable copy of the GCD to construct his publisher, title and creator charts.  Comichron: Our source for comic book sales data.  Man Without Fear: Kuljit Mithra's Daredevil site contains a staggering collection of resources about our hero, including news, interviews and comic details.    The American Comic Book Chronicles: Published by TwoMorrows, these volumes provide an excellent analysis of American comics through the years.  Because these volumes break down comic history by year and decade they are a great place to get a basic orientation on what is happening across the comic industry at a particular point in time.  Joshua and Jamie Do Daredevil: A fantastic podcast that does a deep-dive into Daredevil comics.  This ran from 2018-2020, and covered most of the first volume of Daredevil, and was a fun way to get an in-depth look at each issue of Daredevil from 1-377.  My Marvelous Year: This is a reading-club style podcast where Dave Buesing and friends chose important or interesting books from a particular year to read and discuss.  This helped me remember some fun and crazy stories, and would be a great companion piece to Murdock and Marvel for those who want more comic-story-specific coverage.  BOOKLIST  The following books have been frequently used as reference while preparing summaries of the comic history segments of our show.  Each and every one comes recommended by Dan for fans wanting to read more about it!  Licari, Fabio and Marco Rizzo.  Marvel: The First 80 Years: The True Story of a Pop-Culture Phenomenon.  London: Titan Books, 2020.  This book is sort of a mess, as the print quality is terrible, and Titan doesn't even credit the authors unless you check the fine print.  It's like this was published by Marvel in the early 60s! But the information is good, and it is presented in an entertaining fashion.  So its decent, but I would recommend you see if you can just borrow it from the library instead of purchasing.  Wells, John.  American Comic Book Chronicles: 1960-1964.  Raleigh: Two Morrows, 2015.  Not cheap, but a fantastic series that is informative and fun to read.  Wright, Bradford.  Comic Book Nation: The Transformation of Youth Culture in America.  Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press, 2001.  This is the revised edition.  Marvel Year By Year: A Visual History.  New York: DK Publishing, 2022.  The academic in my rails at using information from any work that doesn't have an author credit, but this is a decent (if very surface) look at each year in the history of Timely / Marvel from 1939 to 2021.    Cowsill, Alan et al.  DC Comics Year by Year: A Visual History.  New York: DK Publishing, 2010.  Because its nice to occasionally take a peek at what the Distinguished Competition is up to.  Dauber, Jeremy.  American Comics: A History.  New York, W.W. Norton & Company, 2022.  An excellent, relatively compact history of the domestic comic industry from its 19th century origins through to recent 21st century developments.  An excellent successor to Bradford Wright's Comic Book Nation.

This is part 3 of our new Sound Judgment quick-hit series on six storytelling strategies for hooking your audience and keeping them with you. Today, we're talking about scenes. They're obviously a staple in longform narrative storytelling, like true crime and documentaries. Don't ignore them, though, for interview shows; you just have to interview well to elicit good, sensory anecdotes from your guests. Between the lines, you'll hear how useful they are on the page and the stage as well. As a reminder, all six strategies come from today's best audio storytellers. But these are storytelling strategies that don't care what media is yours, so stick around, writers, public speakers, screenwriters and video producers — and of course, podcasters.  With examples featuring Rich Roll, author Charles Duhigg, and Crime Show's Emma Courtland. Apply the six storytelling strategies for creating unforgettable content to your own work!  Sign up for our interactive, virtual Hook Your Audience & Keep Them Coming Back workshopThursday, March 14, 2024By developing skills from story structure to scene-making, suspense to specifics, you'll learn to create or improve the show, story, article or speech that expresses what you want to express, captivates the people you want to reach, and achieves quality and depth you can be proud of. 7 WAYS TO HELP YOU BE UNIQUE Podcasting is growing by leaps and bounds everyday. There are so many podcasts in your niche. That makes it even more critical for your podcast to be unique. If you want to stand out in the sea of sameness, there are a few things you can do that are easy to implement to make you special. WHY BE UNIQUE In the era of artificial intelligence, you can't afford to be information alone. AI can easily reproduce your information. AI cannot copy you, your story and your personality. A fews day ago we took a roadtrip to see Duran Duran in concert. It was the opportunity for my wife to cross off one of her bucket list bands. They put on an amazing show. Nile Rodgers and Chic opened the show. Bastille was the middle act. Then, Duran Duran brought down the house. It was fantastic. Duran Duran started as a band in the Birmingham, England in 1978 with Nick Rhodes, John Taylor and Stephen Duffy. They struggled for a few years as Stephen left the band. Seven others came in and out of the band until they found the five that would become the famous Duran Duran as most know it. Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes, John Taylor, Roger Taylor, and Andy Taylor. They were part of a scene known as the New Romatic movement. It was a musical movement influenced by David Bowie, Marc Bolan and Roxy Music. The New Romantic movement developed fashions inspired by the glam rock era coupled with the early Romantic period of the late 18th and early 19th century. Bands emerging from the New Romantic movement included Spandau Ballet, A Flock of Seagulls, Boy George, and Classix Nouveaux. Though they had success in the U.K., Spandau Ballet and A Flock of Seagulls both only had one big hit in the U.S. Classix Nouveau were hardly known. On the other hand, Duran Duran and Boy George had numerous hits. Duran Duran had 13 songs that hit the Top 20 in the U.S. and many others that cracked the Top 40. DURAN DURAN So what set Duran Duran apart from the rest of the New Romantics? The band learned how to be unique better and unlike any other group. They had John Taylor, Andy Taylor and Roger Taylor in the band. However, none of the three were related, which made a great conversation piece. Nick and Simon were both heartthrobs who wore makeup and fashion epitomizing the style of the New Romantics. They were interesting, gave great interviews, created unique music, and influenced a style in the 80s unmatched by other bands. They wrote and recorded "A View To A Kill" to be the title track of the James Bond film of the same name. It was the first Bond theme to hit number one on the U.S. charts. Duran Duran created fantastic videos to usher in the age of MTV. The iconic videos for "Rio", "Girls on Film" and "Hungry Like the Wolf" were masterpieces in heavy rotation on MTV and still remembered today. Their popularity was demonstrated by the thousands of people singing every note to their songs nearly 40 years after they were released. It was one big party from start to end. You can take seven fundamental lessons from Duran Duran to help you be unique. These fundamentals will help you create raving fans rather than being a one-hit wonder. BE YOURSELF First, to be unique, be yourself. Be authentic. Only you can be you. If you try to fit in, you'll blend in. You won't get noticed. Don't simply copy somebody else. Blaze your own path. Infuse your content with your personality. Nobody can copy you. Duran Duran blazed the way for the New Romantic movement. Their style was unique. The music was original. Simon Le Bon came out of art school straight into the band and it showed. STORIES Next, incorporate your story into your podcast. People love a good story. More importantly, they love a true story. It is authentic and original. Listeners will learn about you with stories. Your stories define your character. They help your audience get to know who you are, what you're about, and what you value. Stories breed friendships. Think of your best friend. How much do you know about your best friend? You know everything, because your best friend tells you everything. They tell you every great story that happens in their life. Relationships derive from revelation. The more you reveal about yourself, the more your listener gets to know you. That's how friendships are formed. TELL THE TRUTH The third fundamental to be authentic is to tell the truth. Honesty fosters relationships. When your listeners learn they can count on you, they discover they can trust you. If you say you will post something on Wednesday, post it on Wednesday. Little deposits in your trust account will go a long way when you tell the truth consistently. Members of Duran Duran left the band, rejoined the band, left the band and rejoined again. They were always upfront with their fans. Andy Taylor joined the band in 1980. He left in 1986 before coming back in 2001. Andy left again in 2006. In 2022, Duran Duran was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The remaining four were there to accept, while Simon Le Bon read a letter from an absent Andy Taylor. The letter revealed Andy was battling prostate cancer. Earlier this year, the band announced they are working on a new project that will include a collaboration with Andy Taylor. They are always authentically truthful and their fans love them for that. BE TRUE TO YOURSELF You can be unique when you stick to your beliefs. Be true to yourself. It is impossible to consistently be something you're not. Trying to be like somebody else will eventually fall apart. It is hard to fake it without tripping up. Your listeners will see through it. Be proud of your features and your flaws. These all combine to make you the unique person you are. Nobody can duplicate your unique combination of qualities. Even during the tough times of the early 90s when grunge and hip hop were taking over, Duran Duran stuck to their mod dance style. They had a drought of four years without reaching the Top 40 chart in the U.S., but they kept true to themselves. It paid off when they hit #3 in 1993 with "Ordinary World" and #7 with "Come Undone". The band has a powerful fan base, because their fans know exactly what they are going to get at every show. PERSONAL STYLE The fifth fundamental to be unique is to use your personal style. To make your show unique, add your personal style. Duran Duran had their fashion. They had their hair, eye liner, ruffles. They had a swagger unlike any other. Do it in a way that only you can do it. Not a made up way. Your unique way. HAVE FUN Like the party Duran Duran put on, have fun. When you have fun, everybody has fun. You attract the right crowd. People don't simply want info, they want entertainment. They are here to get away from life for awhile. Help them do that. It is much more fun to learn when the content is entertaining. Don't be so serious. Lighten up and have a good time. BE MEMORABLE Finally, be unique by being memorable. Make them remember you. Own your category. When your listeners think of your category, they think of you. That happens when your niche is focused. It is nearly impossible to own the "business" category. However, you could own the "bookkeeper for solopreneurs" category. Get focused. Then, get listeners to talk about you. You don't want listeners to casually listen then go away. It is hard to monetize your activities if you are not top-of-mind. Most marketing is focused on top-of-mind awareness and a strong call to action. Your call to action is powerfully effective when you are the first one that comes to mind. When Duran Duran hit the scene, nobody said, "Boy, they sound like Band X." Even though they were inspired by David Bowie and Roxy Music, they sounded different. You can hear David Bowie singing "Wild Boys" or "Notorious". The band knew who they were and stuck to their niche to be memorable. BE UNIQUE THIS WEEK This week, I'd love to see you review two of your episodes. See how many of these fundamentals are present in your podcast. Find one personal story to include in your next podcast. Do one thing in a way only you can do it and make it memorable. Then, let me know how it goes. Email me. And if you have a chance, catch Duran Duran next time they are close. You'll have one incredible night that you will be talking about for years. If you don't have a mentor who can take your hand and walk you every step of the way, go to www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/apply, click the button and apply to have a chat with me. We strive to give credit to every podcast team whenever it's possible to do so. Wild Boys Credits: Host: Sam Mullins; Producer: Abukar Adan; Senior Producer: Ashleyanne Krigbaum; Executive Producer: Matt Shaer; Editor: Karen Duffin; Sound Design and Mixing: Hannis Brown and Garrett TiedemannAt the end of every episode, I give you a few of the many takeaways from these conversations. Here are today's:  As storytellers, we already know that curiosity is critical. But are you as curious as you can be? When Sam first started looking into this old story, he discovered that reporters had only skimmed the surface. Sam was driven by a need to understand how this situation could have happened. He began asking questions like what was their childhood like? What would drive two young men to do something like this?Trust your instincts. If you think there's more to a story than meets the eye, you're probably right. Sam trusted his when he said, “There has to be much more here than they were just jerks messing with us.” And there was.Working with a good editor is a godsend -  it can mean the difference between a memorable story or series and one that falls flat. But, as Sam says, the relationship with an editor is a scary one, because it's so intimate. You have to earn each other's trust and be completely honest with each other. The creative work you do without recognition or outward signs of success is never wasted. I'm a sucker for an overnight success story – which is what Sam's story initially sounded like. But I'm also a sucker for most people's real overnight success stories – which is that good fortune isn't sudden at all; it's the outcome of years of building skills.Links mentioned in this episode:Sound Judgment Ep 14:  Bone Valley: How to Create a True Crime Podcast That Makes a Difference***Bring lessons on hosting and producing into your inbox! Did you know Sound Judgment is also a free newsletter?
