Mark and Joey Lewandowski discuss the 2018 surrealist neo-noir black comedy thriller Under the Silver Lake. Directed by David Robert Mitchell, and starring Andrew Garfield, Riley Keough, and dozens of secret codes, the movie focuses on what happens when an aimless slacker goes on a quest around Los Angeles. In this episode, they also talk about secret codes, swimming pools, and A24 films. Enjoy!
**THIS STORY CONTAINS FULL SPOILERS**This week, we're diving into the Twitter thread that shook the internet and somehow became an A24 film - yes, "Zola" is on the menu. We're talking Taylour Paige, Riley Keough, Colman Domingo, and Nicholas Braun bringing the most chaotic road trip ever to life, but does the movie capture the thread's unhinged brilliance? Expect dramatic readings, plot twists, and a lot of “what the hell” energy. #Zola #A24 #ThreadToTheater #TampaOrBust #TaylourPaige #RileyKeough #ColmanDomingo #NicholasBraun #AziahWells #JaniczaBravo #FilmisLitPod #Movieadatation #AriWegner #DannyGaylord
On this episode we celebrate the 10th anniversary of Mad Max: Fury Road - Black and Chrome Edition. Often considered the greatest action film of all time, Fury Road reintroduced the world to Max, this time played by Tom Hardy, as he teams up with Furiosa to take on the dystopian warlord Immortan Joe. George Miller's stated intention was to make a movie that was one long chase, and as elemental and close to a silent film as possible. The Black and Chrome Edition brings this vision even closer.Other topics include Charlize Theron, George Miller's filmography and how Babe: Pig in the City fits in, America's obsession with celebrity culture, Warren Zevon's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Riot Fest, and whether or not we should cover The Beaver with Mel Gibson on the podcast.Songs of the WeekLet Them Eat War by Bad ReligionKurt Kobain by ProofBrothers In Arms by Junkie XLRemainders Jukebox PlaylistWebsiteFacebookInstagramYouTubeTwitter
Play your flame guitar as you cue up the 655th edition of Have You Ever Seen to hear us jaw about the loner known as Max Rockatansky, but stay for the Imperator known as Furiosa. George Miller's 6-time Oscar-winner was the 4th in a series that already featured one of the greatest stunt movies ever made (The Road Warrior), but then he and his team managed to easily top it with Fury Road. And just as it was with the earlier pre-CGI films, most of the remarkable and dangerous stuff was done practically! Tom Hardy is solid casting in taking over the role that made Mad Mel Gibson a star, but this movie belongs to Charlize Theron as Furiosa. She, Zoe Kravitz, Riley Keough and the other fantastic female characters are the standouts in a surprisingly feminist film. So drive out, then drive back home as we head over to Australia (well, Namibia, really) and wrap up another Oscar Month with a detailed chat about Mad Max: Fury Road. Well, Actually: we said that it's unlikely Miller will get to make more films in this series because Furiosa bombed last year, but Mad Max: The Wasteland IS in pre-production. Riley Keough is an Emmy nominated actress and producer, starring in hit shows like “Daisy Jones and the Six.” She's also part of one of the most famous families in American Pop culture. Her mother Lisa Marie Presley asked her to help her write her memoir, then weeks later passed away. Riley decided to finish her mother's memoir using her notes and recordings. Riley sat down with Jenna Bush Hager to chat about what it was like to listen to her mom's personal recordings for the first time, how she filled in the gaps of her mother's story, and what she hopes readers take away from her mother's life. Riley opens up about her own grief, and how her mother handled grief after the loss of her father, Elvis Presley. Riley also reveals the significance of the title of the memoir ‘From Here to the Great Unknown.”
Riley Keough (Under The Bridge, Daisy Jones & The Six) regales the hosts with stories of her early dual-life -- the ultra shy kid who once tried to run away from her own birthday party, and the budding performer who was discovering the same elation of being on stage as her grandfather Elvis Presley. Riley also tells stories from her new book, From Here To The Great Unknown, about her relationship with her mother Priscilla Ann Presley and the complexities of their family. As Elvis's only child, Lisa Marie Presley was burdened from birth with extraordinary, largely unwanted fame. Before her death in 2023, she spent years as tabloid fodder, less for her sporadic music career than for her highly publicised relationships with Michael Jackson, Nicolas Cage and Scientology. In a recent review of her posthumous memoir, Jessica Olin celebrates Lisa Marie's resilience and charisma in the face of ruthless publicity. Jessica joins Tom to discuss Lisa Marie's ambivalent relationship with fame, and how a new generation are encountering the Presley family saga through her daughter, Riley Keough.Find further reading on the episode page: https://lrb.me/lisamariepodSponsored Links:Find out more about ACE Cultural Tours: https://aceculturaltours.co.ukTo learn more about financial support for professional writers, visit the Royal Literary Fund here: https://www.rlf.org.uk/ Hosted on Acast. How good are you at letting yourself feel your feelings? Actor Riley Keough thinks it's important to embrace the sad and angry moments as much as the joyful, hopeful ones. In this chat with Fearne, Riley explains how her own grief at losing her brother and mum has taught her that fighting or repressing emotions only makes you more anxious in the long term. Riley's mum was Lisa Marie Presley, the only child of Elvis Presley. Riley talks about Lisa's ability to live in a place of truth – she'd never do anything that didn't feel authentic to her. What can we all learn about how to lean into our own pleasure? It's liberating to not care if others like you! Fearne and Riley also discuss how impactful it can be when divorced parents are able to co-parent with grace. Plus, Riley reveals why she thinks her mum and Michael Jackson had such a deep connection. Lisa Marie Presley's memoir, which Riley finished, is called From Here To The Great Unknown, and it's out now. We've arrived at the end of our year long study of the films of Lars von Trier and we wish we could say that we hate seeing him go but it's been a very, predictably, rough year. Today we discuss his last feature film that stars a pretty ageless Matt Dillon who is a serial killer. He recounts his life of horror to the poet Virgil in 5 distinct incidents that he shares. It's “THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT” from 2018. A character study late in the career of the notorious director. The film also stars Uma Thurman, Bruno Ganz, Riley Keough and some other character actors we've seen all year long in von Trier films. What works about this study in psychopathy and what doesn't? We also revisit our scores of Lars's films over the past year and there have been some adjustments since our discussions. Join us as we say goodbye to Lars von Trier films (at least for a bit) and at the end of the episode we reveal who the director of 2025 will be that we will spend the entire year discussing their catalog. Next year's director might even be more controversial than Lars! Hear us tell of it. The result is the posthumous memoir “From Here to the Great Unknown,” which looks at what it's like to grow up in the whirlwind of celebrity around Elvis Presley and Graceland. Kate discusses An Oprah Special: The Presleys — Elvis, Lisa Marie and Riley on CBS. Barbara Shearer, Executive Producer and Director of Loving Elvis on Peacock. The docuseries goes offstage to reveal the private man -- not the myth -- as viewed through the eyes of the women whose love for the man endures: his nurse, his fiancé, his live in girlfriends, his many dalliances and a few young fans dreaming of more. This unique exposé uncovers a man who was much more complex than the public perception of the titular American icon. Presley was, at his core, a man who was fighting demons, addictions and profound loneliness - something the carefully curated myth fails to embrace, until now.
