The Leavitt Theatre almost ceased to exist. In the mid-2010s, after the Ogunquit-based silent film theatre found itself gasping for air in the midst of the home movie theater and streaming revolution, it nearly shuttered its doors. But then, after drawing upon the good faith created over the previous decades with the patrons of Ogunquit, the theatre raised an astounding $70,000 on Kickstarter in 2014 to breathe new life into the theatre. And then in 2017, when Max Clayton -- whose parents used to own the theatre -- took over the Leavitt, he made some much-needed changes that completely transformed the business.Today, the Leavitt hosts concerts, movie nights, Boston Celtics watch parties, private events, and even drag shows! From the historic Leavitt Theatre in downtown Ogunquit, Max Clayton sits down with host Troy Farkas to discuss the theatre's roots as a silent film theater, how it evolved alongside the movie industry throughout the 20th century, the fundraising campaign that saved the theatre from extinction, taking over as owner in the late 2010s from his parents, how the theatre adapted to changing consumer demands, the theatre's plans for celebrating its 100th anniversary this summer, and more.CHAPTERS:What to do in Ogunquit (00:00)The evolution of the theatre (05:37)Max's love for the theatre (12:12)Tough times for the theatre in the 2010s (17:15)Transforming the theatre after becoming the owner (20:50)Seacoast Stories LIVE on 6/19 (26:30)How the pandemic forced the Leavitt to adapt (28:25)Plans for the 100th anniversary summer season (37:40)Advice to younger self (45:26)To see the Leavitt Theatre's complete summer 2025 lineup, visit their website here.**The next "Seacoast Stories" LIVE PODCAST is on June 19! In this episode, I spoke with Thomas J. Slater about his book "June Mathis: The Rise and Fall of a Silent Film Visionary". After more than a decade of stepping onto stages across the US, she moved into the burgeoning film business and behind the camera to begin a prolific career as a screenwriter and producer for profound movies like The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (1921) and Blood and Sand (1922). With her expert use of melodrama and masterful technique, Mathis would eventually become the first female head writer at Metro Pictures. Forgotten Hollywood is on Facebook! Doug Hess is the Creator/Producer and Host!

More Sci-Fi Shuffle this week with 1927's silent classic "Metropolis" with guest Amber Elby! She talks about why this movie made her incapable of a bathroom break and why she is glad she didn't have to discuss the most recent version with her students (but she still has to with us). We also get into which jobs would be better as mini-games, which streaming service we presume this movie is on and whether it was better to just pay child actors with food.
Today on Part Two of our conversation about silent film stars Harold Lloyd and Mildred Davis on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we continue our conversation with Suzanne Lloyd, their granddaughter who was raised as their daughter. Last week we laid the groundwork on the life and legacy of one of the silent era's greatest comedians. This week, we discuss the life Suzanne led in the family's Green Acres 16 acre estate in Benedict Canyon. Harold seemed to have a way with money and he indulged all his passions with abandon. Although retired when Suzanne was growing up, Harold remained very active in his passions. Be it photography, the Shriners hospital, the estate itself or even his passion for bowling with Howard Hughes, we get into it all. Topics discussed in this episode include: Harold's passion for Stereo, Rick Nelson, TV director Richard Correll, Debbie Reynolds, the Blacklist, Paul McCartney & Wings, Disneyland, the Rolling Stones, Marilyn Monroe, Roddy McDowell, Harmon Kardon audio and more. Along the way we discuss 3-D photography, pipe organs and an almost ridiculous obsession with Christmas and Christmas trees you have to hear to believe. But we get into it, oh yes we do! We pick up our conversation with Suzanne mid-interview as we compare Ernie Kovacs to Harold Lloyd on this episode, of this episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast. Everyone has a story. Enjoy.

Today on another brand new episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we give you part one of our conversation with Suzanne Lloyd, the granddaughter of silent film comedy star & Christmas tree obsessive, Harold Lloyd. Now, if the name (or the image) of Harold Lloyd doesn't immediately ring a bell like Buster Keaton or Charlie Chaplin, this is one of the reasons we do this podcast, to make sure the legacy of legendary (or sometimes just working actors) are not forgotten. And after you hear Suzanne's lengthy and almost encyclopedic remembrances of the man who raised her and why his name isn't always mentioned as one of the three silent film comedians, you will understand it after listening to part one and next week's part two. There is a reason. One we know all too well ourselves with the Ernie Kovacs estate. On today's episode, we discuss the silent era of film and names like Hal Roach, Colleen Moore, Mary Pickford, Daryl Zanuck, Irving Thalberg, Snub Pollard and more are bandied about like so many of Suzanne's colorful stories about Harold Lloyd. We also hearabout Suzanne's grandmother, actress Mildred Davis who was a pretty huge silent film star in her own right. It's a whirlwind of information that fans of silent films won't get enough of and fans who love old Hollywood but maybe don't know the silent era well will want to learn more about. Suzanne was a marvelous guest – someone who knows dates, places, studios, names and more like these things happened just yesterday. It's clear that because she now controlls the Harold Lloyd Estate and his production company that she learned all this while also genuinely loving her grandfather who raised her like a daughter. It's terrific stuff. So now podcast listeners, we bring you the story of Speedy aka Harold Lloyd on this episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast. Take a listen.

In this week's FilmBabble, the gents tackle the still-reigning sci-fi behemoth, Metropolis. Nearly 100 years later, Fritz Lang's awe-inspiring feat of cinema continues to challenge and excite conversation, even without much of the original footage. Does its reputation and towering legacy prove worthy, or has the last century ushered in enough new marvels for us to consider it eclipsed?Intro/outro music: Main theme from 'Mildred Pierce', composed by Max SteinerMETROPOLIS (1927), Weimar Republic, written by Thea von Harbou, directed by Fritz Lang, cinematography by Karl Freund and Günther Rittau, featuring Alfred Abel, Brigitte Helm, Gustav Fröhlich, and Rudolf Klein-Rogge
Ep. 341 Silent Films by Bonehead Weekly
Send us comments, suggestions and ideas here! On this week's episode we explore the occult and religious symbolism woven prominently throughout Fritz Lang's silent-film-cinema-classic Metropolis! Often credited with establishing the science-fiction genre, the symbolism and story of Metropolis is often naively overlooked to emphasize the innovative use of special effects which would come to overshadow the film's entire legacy. Using the historical backdrop of German occultism as our guide we find a coherent use of esoteric symbolism throughout Metropolis which illustrates some of the revolutionary, Aquarian philosophy rife in the counter-cultural underground of The Weimar Republic of the time. In the free section of the show we discuss its creator Fritz Lang, his personal quirks, political troubles and potent artistic legacy before articulating some of the occult symbolism used in the first half of the film. We even use the novelization of the film to round-out our search. In the extended version of the show we continue to unpack ideas newly on loan from Aleister Crowley, what it all has to do with Luciferianism, the Brotherhood of Saturn, the dawning of the Age of Aquarius and how these motifs have strongly inspired the science fiction we still enjoy today. Between this and the last episode we hope some big puzzle pieces finally fall into place and you have a new excuse to watch Batman. Thank you and enjoy the show! Today on another encore episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to Keaton Talmadge, great-granddaughter of silent film comedic genius Buster Keaton and silent film star Natalie Talmadge. It's a good thing we love silent film as well as talkies because talkies we did with Keaton. What about you ask? Some things you might expect and some you might not. For instance, how at one time in her life, Keaton would mention the name Buster Keaton and get a blank stare. Was there ever such a time? We also talk about Buster's legacy in the ‘20s……of the 21st century, not 20th. We also learn about the outrageously famous and somewhat wacky Talmadge sisters. Los Angelenos today would know them from apartment buildings and street names in and around Hollywood. But their legacy, and that of their mother is not so much a lost story but one that isn't frequently told. It's a good one, especially if you like the ‘golden age of Hollywood.' We discussed at length on this episode We also hear about Keaton carrying on the acting tradition, when so many family members prior did not. Her voice-over work you have surely heard. We learn about her time learning acting in college, auditions and a strange but not so strange new company she started recently that isn't just for kids. This was a very fun episode and we learned a lot. And of course, this is the Rarified Heir Podcast and everyone has a story. This one goes back to the silent era.
Go back to the movies with us! We're still profiling LA's repertory theaters in Revival House cause there are SO MANY to check out! In this episode, we explore a cool space with some deep, messy history. Fashion label Brain Dead has taken over a site that some would consider....a little cursed. Originally opened in the 1940s as The Silent Movie Theater on Fairfax, the venue was home to premieres and parties. Until a theft and murder shut the theater down. In the 2000s, it was taken over by Cinefamily, which programmed in that space until allegations of abuse came to light in 2017. But today, Brain Dead Studios is keeping the lights on for nerds, artists, and skate punks in Los Angeles -- aiming to create an eclectic community space to inspire creatives and show good movies. Take a listen as we explain the history and present of this theater. Guests: Professor and historian Ross Melnick, Brain Dead founder Kyle Ng
