TVC 676.3: Ed and guest co-host Chuck Harter welcome Erica Gavin, the actress known around the world as the star of Vixen! (1968), the satiric sexploitation movie produced, directed, and co-written by Russ Meyer that esteemed critic Roger Ebert once described as "the quintessential Russ Meyer film." Despite numerous attempts at censorship (including one of the first-ever X ratings and twenty-three separate U.S. prosecutions for obscenity), Vixen! became one of the top-grossing movies of 1968, forever changing the face of independent film making while remaining the creative template for Meyer's unapologetic vision of American cinema. Topics discussed this segment include the various taboo issues that Meyer tackled in Vixen! (nymphomania, racism, communism, draft dodging, lesbianism, and incest) and how the maverick filmmaker was both of his time and ahead of his time. Severin Films has just released Russ Meyer's Vixen!, Russ Meyer's Supervixens, and Russ Meyer's Beneath the Valley of the Ultravixens on Blu-ray for the first time as part of a landmark partnership with the Russ Meyer Trust. The Blu-ray release of Vixen! includes more than three hours of extra features (including a brand-new audio commentary by Erica Gavin, plus archival interviews with Erica Gavin and Harrison Page), while both Supervixens and Beneath the Valley of the Ultravixens are likewise chockful of extra features.

One a basic level, ‘60s cinema is the story of the complete breakdown of censorship rules about what could and could not be shown on American theater screens. Hollywood's Production Code was already falling apart in the ‘50s when competition with television forced movies to offer kinds of entertainment that were not available on the small screen. Films from countries with fewer restrictions on content were being shown more frequently and naturist documentaries were getting around rules about nudity – though you had to go to “art” cinemas or less reputable theaters to see these things. While the studios still had strict guidelines on what was acceptable for release in mainstream theaters, smaller theaters were pushing boundaries on what they were willing to show audiences. As a result, Hollywood, in order to keep up, threw all their old self-censorship rules by the end of the ‘60s.One of the major figures on the grindhouse circuit who continued to push the amount of sex and nudity that could be shown in films throughout the decade – and made enough money doing it for the studios to really take notice – was Russ Meyer. His goofy, satirical, surprisingly well-made exploitation films were cutting-edge smut that gained popularity over the course of the ‘60s because they delivered the sleaze they promised and dis it with skill and style. Eventually he gained a cult reputation among cineastes and reputable film critics that continues to this day, even though many of his films are more shocking by modern standards than they were when they first hit screens. In this episode, Bart and Jenna discuss all things boobs, sexual desperation and boobs. Bart takes on the brunt of the burden, getting through the entire decade and finding there's more to Meyer than pure titillation. Jenna, however, is less than enthused with Meyer's ‘comedic' sensibilities, finding Bart's cherry-picked selections mostly intolerable. But even both agree that at least a little bit of Meyer is essential viewing for anybody who want to understand the what the decade in cinema was all about. The following films are discussed:• Lorna (1964) Directed by Russ Meyer Starring Lorna Maitland, Mark Bradley, James Rucker• Mudhoney (1965) Directed by Russ Meyer Starring Hal Hopper, Antoinette Cristiani, John Furlong• Faster, Pussycat! Welcome to Hit Rewind! In this episode, Michael and Kersey take a trip back to 1968 to explore how cinema began pushing boundaries. The year saw the emergence of the R and X ratings, reflecting a shift towards more mature themes. First on the list is Valley of the Dolls, a melodrama about three women navigating the dark side of Hollywood. Despite its reputation for being trashy, it's a fascinating look at the industry's underbelly, with standout performances, especially from Patty Duke. The conversation then shifts to Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, a wild, bizarre follow-up that blends comedy, musical acts, and surrealism. Directed by Russ Meyer and co-written by Roger Ebert, this film is a cult classic that defies conventional storytelling. Next up is Midnight Cowboy, a groundbreaking film that delves into the gritty life of a wannabe male prostitute in New York City. With stellar performances by Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman, this movie is a masterpiece that stands the test of time. Finally, they discuss The Wild Bunch, a film that redefined action and Western genres with its raw, unfiltered portrayal of violence and camaraderie. Directed by Sam Peckinpah, it's a gritty tale of outlaws facing the end of their era. Join us as we explore these iconic films and their impact on the world of cinema. Enjoy the journey through the transformative year of 1968!

"I give good head." We're finally back after a break and talking about sexploitation. This time we discuss Russ Meyer's odd sex comedy Up
This week, we talk to Los Angeles filmmaker, actor, and former programmer at the legendary New Beverly Cinema, Julia Marchese, about one of the greatest rock n' roll films of all time, BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS!!! When does ANY party start? When you get there! This week, Joe and Rob check out Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (1970), directed by Russ Meyer, and then Shaolin Invincibles (1978), directed by Hou Cheng. We will call out Spoiler Territory for the first film (it's not worth worrying about for the second - honestly), so if you want to skip ahead from that point in Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, you can rejoin the conversation at the 1:11:35 mark to avoid spoilers. Theme music: "The Cold Light of Day" by HKM. Check out HKM on #SoundCloud or Bandcamp
Sam and Jason contend with audio demons and fictional bands. Thrill as they look at Russ Meyer and Roger Ebert's satirical 1970 romp Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, Dirk Diggler's stunning tunes from Boogie Nights, 2001's hard rock daydream Rock Star, 2000's record store comedy High Fidelity, Hanna-Barbera and Syd & Marty Croft's late '60s children's show, The Banana Splits and ponder a strange question: what kind of music do they listen to in a galaxy far, far, away? "I never try anything. I just do it. And I don't beat clocks, just people! Wanna try me?" We watched the Russ Meyer classic "Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill!" with our friend Darren Stein and we're all shook up baby! It's the 25th anniversary of one of our favorite films - "Jawbreaker" so we just had to have writer/director Darren Stein back on our show and it was dealers choice. In this house we love bad girls, so Darren's suggestion of this B-Movie T&A classic fits right in. We try not to spend the entire length of the pod talking about how we wish we could be an ounce as cool as the incomparable Tura Satana but we may or may not have achieved that goal. We also take a dip into the real Tura and her actual life that could be a movie in and of itself. Don't worry we spend plenty of time gushing over Haji, Lori Williams and Sue Bernard as well. They just don't make bad girls like they used to! Patron Saint of Movies That Made Us Gay, John Waters famously remarked that this movie is "beyond a doubt, the best movie ever made. It is possibly better than any film that will be made in the future" and damed if he aint right about that. Let's see AI write dialogue better than this: "Women! They let 'em vote, smoke and drive - even put 'em in pants! And what happens? A Democrat for President!" 37:04 – In a small, yet perfectly formed, edition, Doc Sleaze finds himself ‘Baffled’, both by the failed Leonard Nimoy TV pilot and Russ Meyer’s unhistorical sex slave romp, before being distracted by some beach party/haunted house action. Plus: the politics of dementia, frustrating dreams and more. Includes: Disappointment in Dreamland ¦ ‘Baffled’ (1973) Trailer […]
Lee is joined by friend and fellow podcaster Vaughn Kuhlmeier to talk about two early examples of what would come to be known as the Hixploitation genre, those being Russ Meyer's "Mudhoney" (1965), and Jerry Gross' "Girl on a Chain Gang (1966). Much of the conversation revolves around how both films contain the elements that the subgenre would build off of later on in the 1970s especially, and just how very different these two films are from one another in tone and style. Was Meyer too reserved? Was Gross not exploitive enough? The hosts also talk about what they've watched recently and respond to a listener comment. On this edition of Parallax Views, Simon Matthews, author of Free Your Mind!: Giovanni 'Tinto' Brass, 'Swinging London' and the 60s Pop Culture Scene, joins the show to discuss the life and career of European filmmaker Tinto Brass. Brass is perhaps most well-known today for his erotic/softcore features as well as the epic, star-studded effort Caligula (starring Malcolm McDowell and Helen Mirren among others), that was re-edited at the behest of Penthouse's Bob Guccione to the point of butchering Brass' original vision. Matthews, however, hones in on the works of Brass as they relate to the the era of mod culture in the days of London's swinging 60s. With a foreward by the legendary actor Franco Nero, Free Your Mind! explores such Brass efforts as Nerosubianco (aka Attraction), The Howl, The Vacation, and The Dropout and their relation to 60s pop culture and counterculture. We'll also be discussing such Tinto Brass movies as the controversial Salon Kitty about Nazi Germany (part of the Nazi chic boom of the 60s/70s film industry), the spaghetti Western Yankee, and Brass in relation to contemporaries like Russ Meyer and John Waters. We'll look at the politics of Tinto Brass and why his filmography, especially in Britain, has been overlooked. If you're unfamiliar with Tinto Brass this will fill you in on an interesting auteur in the world of filmmaking who hasn't gotten his proper due despite working with heavyweight actors like Vanessa Redgrave and the aforementioned Franco Nero. We'll also discuss the unmade films of Tinto Brass including the adaptation of Anthony Burgess' A Clockwork Orange that he almost made and a project that never materialized with Jim Morrison of the legendary rock 'n' roll band The Doors. All that and more on this edition of Parallax Views.

Two terrific guests on this episode, lordy. There is a new book out called The Exotic Ones, which tells the take of filmmaking duo Ron and Julie Ormond. They were contemporaries of Ed Wood and their story is every bit as bizarre. The book was written by the legendary Jimmy McDonogh, who wrote The Ghastly One about Andy Milligan. He's also written biographies of Russ Meyer, Tammy Wynette, Neil Young and more. Jimmy McDonough is here today in all his psychotronic glory. And then we have our resident film critic Katharine Coldiron to further unpack the Ormond oeuvre but also to discuss her new book, Junk Film, Why Bad Movies Matter. True tales From Weirdsville is going to take you down to rabbit hole to uncover all things Kenneth Anger, and there is, as always, so much more.

The season eight playoffs continue with the final match in the Altair IV Division. We love us some adaptations, so we start round one by quizzing our returning players Ilan, Gal, and Mike about book-to-screen adaptations that changed their titles. Then, things get wild in round two as we return to the world of very real, but thankfully forgotten movie sequels. The lightning round caps it all off, as one player heads to the season finale!
