Madeline, Julian, and Emilio continue their cycle of New York City movies with a "Suggestion Box" entry covering "Problemista," the film debut of director, writer, and actor Julio Torres, known previously for his writing on Saturday Night Live, HBO special "My Favorite Shapes," and co-creating and starring in the supernatural comedy "Los Espookys." Like other films the group have discussed in this cycle, "Problemista" depicts a recent immigrant's struggle to get by in New York City, but through a distinctly contemporary lens that stands out for its surrealism and vivacious humor. In discussing Alejandro "Ale" Martinez's journey towards steady employment and a work visa, the group look in depth at the magical realism throughout (with emphasis on "Craigslist" and "Bureaucratic Limbo"), how people with power use or abuse their privilege, and the enigma that is Elizabeth, Alejandro's erratic presumed employer played by a tour-de-force Tilda Swinton. And perhaps they'll match some databases in FileMakerPro in the process...If you enjoy our podcast, please rate and review us on your podcast platform of choice. Since the comedian Julio Torres came to America from El Salvador, more than a decade ago, his fantastical style has made him a singular presence in the entertainment landscape. An early stint writing for “Saturday Night Live” yielded some of the show's weirdest and most memorable sketches; soon after that, Torres's work on the HBO series “Los Espookys,” which he co-wrote and starred in, cemented his status as a beloved odd-child of the comedy scene. In his most recent work, he's applied his dreamy sensibility to very real bureaucratic nightmares. “Problemista,” his first feature film, draws on Torres's own Kafkaesque experience navigating the U.S. immigration system; in his new HBO show, “Fantasmas,” the protagonist considers whether to acquire a document called a “proof of existence,” without which everyday tasks like renting an apartment are rendered impossible. In a live taping at The New Yorker Festival, the hosts of Critics at Large talk with Torres about his creative influences, and about using abstraction to put our most impenetrable systems into tangible terms. “Life today is so riddled with these man-made labyrinths that are life-or-death … there's something very lonely about it,” Torres says. “These flourishes are there in service of the humanity.”Read, watch, and listen with the critics:“Problemista” (2023)“Fantasmas” (2024-)“Los Espookys” (2019-22)“I Want to Be a Vase,” by Julio Torres“My Favorite Shapes” (2019)“Saturday Night Live” (1975-)“Julio Torres's ‘Fantasmas' Finds Truth in Fantasy,” by Vinson Cunningham (The New Yorker)“The Hunchback of Notre Dame” (1996)“Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle” (2003)“The Substance” (2024)New episodes drop every Thursday. Join us as we dive into the surreal and experimental comedy of Julio Torres' latest series, Fantasmas. We discuss its unique blend of sketch comedy and overarching narrative, comparing it to Torres' previous work on Los Espookys and other genre-bending shows like Everything Everywhere All at Once and Adult Swim classics. From Paul Dano's bizarre cameo to the quirky recurring motifs, we cover it all. While one host finds the show hit-or-miss, the other appreciates its offbeat humor. Tune in for a lively debate on what makes Fantasmas both a triumph and a challenge to watch.
We're thrilled comedian Josh Gondelman could come back to talk about Fantasmas, the latest show from Los Espookys's Julio Torres, which is as hard to describe as it was for us to resist. We talked about everything from fully realized re-imaginings of Alf, to comedy that doesn't have to prove it's smarter than you, to begging the universe to let Torres make American Vandal Seasons 3 through 85. Maybe the show's not for everyone, but it's okay with that, which is part of its charm. Later, we went Around The Dial with 9-1-1, Rachel Feinstein's stand-up special Big Guy, and Sarah and Dan's Justified marathon, and Josh hoped his Killing It Canon presentation would pay off (before 9 PM, of course. Timothy Olyphant won a second time, The Morning Show found a way to lose twice, and Dave was a poet who DID know it in a rhyming edition of Game Time. Put that clear-crayon project aside and have a listen. GUESTS

The United States is home to the largest immigrant population in the world, with hundreds of thousands more seeking asylum and citizenship. America would not be what it is today if not for immigration and the contributions of millions of those who have come here, bolstering the population, strengthening the economy, and weaving their cultures into the fabric of this nation. And yet, despite this truth, many immigrants in the U.S. and those seeking entry at our borders continue to face a bureaucratic, dangerous system that often casts them aside. From the costly and complicated citizenship process to the anti-immigrant rhetoric that plagues today's politics, immigrants often find themselves jumping through hoops to stay in this country. That's the situation that Alejandro Martinez, an aspiring toymaker and Hasbro hopeful, finds himself in when he moves from El Salvador to New York City. One mistake puts him out of a job and left to scramble for new employment that will sponsor him for a work visa. The journey to get a work visa is anything but conventional. This is the basis of “Problemista” a new A24 movie starring, written and directed by comedian Julio Torres. Torres, who is an immigrant himself, plays Alejandro and through his trials, offers a glimpse into a dizzying and absurd reality of the immigration process. You may also know him from his Emmy-nominated writing for SNL, the show “Los Espookys,” and his comedy special “My Favorite Shapes” on HBO. Today, he joins us to talk about “Problemista” and the experiences that led to its creation.
Former SNL writer and comedian & actor you know from "Los Espookys," Julio Torres and Stephen Colbert bond over their memories of being bored in school and just waiting to grow up. Watch the film he wrote, directed, and stars in, “Problemista,” in select theaters this weekend and everywhere on March 22nd. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Horror doesn't just happen. It takes devoted special effects artists and a quirky sense of humor. This week, we head south of the border to answer the question, "What if Portlandia, but horror?" with Los Espookys (Mexico & The United States, 2018-2022), an offbeat NBC-ish horror comedy about making spooky happen. We also review Folklore, a pan-Asian anthology series, get distracted by The Perfect Host and No One Will Save You, and look forward to dream and classic gateway horrors dropping this week.

They talk about Hollywood and endings and Hollywood Endings; whether it is nobler to go out on top or suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune; and as usual, The Writers and Actors Strikes.
Introduction: Minutes 0 to 6:00 I've been watching Los Espookys on HBO Max and I love it. Chandra says this season of What We Do in the Shadows was really good. She also watched the US Open and loves Coco Gauff and Daniil Medvedev. Royals: Minutes 6:00 to 22:45 The Invictus Games are happening in Dusseldorf. Last week we mentioned that Prince Harry stopped briefly in the UK to attend the Wellchild Awards. He also visited his grandmother's crypt at St. George's Chapel in Windsor to quietly pay his respects on the anniversary of her death. He tried to stay under the radar but of course the royal rota threw a fit and said he was trying to upstage William. Meanwhile William and Kate were over an hour late to their event honoring the Queen on the anniversary of her death. Harry got a standing ovation in Dusseldorf and was greeted by the mayor. He's getting glowing coverage in the German press, especially now that Meghan is there. The Windsors are doing a ton of events as counterprogramming. Will and Kate were on Mike Tindall's rugby podcast, and the reporting afterwards was that they “torpedoed Harry's launch of the Invictus Games with the release of a podcast featuring them and Princess Anne.” They always do things with Harry and Meghan in mind. Kate's entire look at the Rugby World Cup was a copy of Meghan's at the Invictus Games opening a year prior. Kate visited a prison and wore a fluffy new wig that the press praised the next day. We also heard she had a meeting. William did an event for suicide prevention and mental health issues affecting construction workers. Meanwhile the royals have not acknowledged Team Briton or the Invictus Games, although they're trying to partially take credit for it by stating that Harry started it through the Royal Foundation. Meghan joined Harry at the Invictus games on Tuesday and attended her first event on Tuesday night. She was in a black Banana Republic shirtdress. On Wednesday Meghan wore a cardigan from J.Crew and dress shorts. She's also worn black jeans with a black sleeveless top and white jeans with a white sweater vest. She is doing her own hair and makeup. Thursday, Meghan and Harry did an event with Nato personnel. Meghan wore a silky brown blouse and dress pants. Chandra's favorite outfit she's worn is her travel outfit. The Nigerian team has given Meghan a traditional Nigerian name. She's been embraced by Invictus competitors and attendees. There are photos of Meghan holding Taira's hand, the Ukrainian Invictus competitor who was held in a Russian prison camp. The British royals haven't acknowledged the British Invictus team with a tweet or message or reception and even the British press is noticing. The British defense minister is there and has been in meetings though. We remember the story about how the British government pressured the Bidens not to support the Sussexes. The Windsors are so obvious with the stunts they're pulling. Comments of the Week: Minutes 22:45 to end Chandra's comment of the week is from GirlNinja on the post about Kate's wig. My comment of the week is from Indica on the post about how the FDA found phenylephrine is ineffective. Thanks for listening bitches!

Fred Armisen loves ska. He's brought it up on multiple Tonight Show appearances. Portlandia famously did the Bart Ska-mpson skit (with guest Matt Groening), and he performed a ska song in one Saturday Night Live sketch (with Bill Hader and Katy Perry). So, we brought Fred on the podcast and discussed all things ska. He had a lot to say on the topic. We talked about his love for 2 Tone ska bands (The Specials, The Selecter, Madness, English Beat, Bad Manners, The Bodysnatchers). But we also talked about the US ska bands he got to know in the 80s and 90s while he played drums in Chicago punk band Trenchmouth. We talked about Fishbone, Skankin' Pickle, Gangster Fun, Slapstick, Let's Go Bowling and more. We also talk about ska in Latin America, which he learned about during his multiple trips to Santiago, Chile, while filming Los Espookys. We talk about the larger movement of punk/New Wave bands that dabbled with ska XTC, The Clash, The Members, Joe Jackson) or stemmed from ska bands (Fun Boy Three, Fine Young Cannibals, General Public) and we talk lovingly about Chicago's famous indie venue, Fireside Bowl. I also tell Fred about a rumor I heard that Cap'n' Jazz were the first band to play Fireside and he votes on whether it was true or not! We also talk about how dumb band fights can get, the influencing role that Alan Myers (Devo), David Barbarossa (Bow Wow Wow), Topper Headon (The Clash) and Clem Burke (Blondie) had on his drumming style, and he takes a moment to mourn the loss of Specials lead singer Terry Hall, which hit him hard.Plus, we decide the perfect number of bands to have on a bill. Ana Fabrega is a comedian, actor and writer. She's probably best known as a star and co-creator of HBO's Los Espookys. The show is about four friends who love horror. They run a company where they go around town and they're often hired for gigs to fool and scare other people. But it's not really a horror show, it's very funny. It's also a very sweet, goofy, kind of surreal show about friendship, identity and carving a place in the world for yourself. Los Espookys just nabbed a Peabody award for its second season. To celebrate, we are revisiting our conversation with Ana from last year. When Ana joined us she talked about growing up in Scottsdale, Arizona and finding her people when she moved to New York. Plus, most of the dialogue on Los Espookys is in Spanish, Ana talks about what it was like to write jokes in Spanish – something she had never done before.

Julio Torres is a powerhouse. He's a comedian, actor and former writer for Saturday Night Live where his sketches brought a touch of magic to the show's standard fare. When we talked, he'd just released his first comedy special My Favorite Shapes. It's a little sideways from what you'd expect. Just like his HBO show Los Espookys —a horror-comedy that starred Julio alongside Fred Armisen, Ana Fabrega, and more. The show's second and – tragically – final season aired late last year on HBO. It's one of our favorites, so we figured we'd send off Los Espookys by revisiting our 2019 conversation with Julio.

We're celebrating the season with our annual Bullseye Halloween Spectacular. We kick things off with an in-depth, funny conversation with R.L. Stine, creator of the Goosebumps series. Stine talks about how he got into writing, how he comes up with titles and why he wishes he never dreamed up an evil ventriloquist dummy. We'll hear about the craziest day in the wild, storied career of drag queen Monét X Change (Ru Paul's Drag Race, Hulu's Huluween Dragstravaganza). Also, an interview with Ana Fabrega, star and co-creator of the great TV series Los Espookys.
The It's Been a Minute team went to the event of the season: BravoCon. Our producer met his favorite housewife, and the Salt Lake City stars spill the tea to host Brittany Luse. Then, Brittany sits down with Julio Torres, a comedian, actor, writer and creator of HBO's Los Espookys. They discuss the influences behind his unique world-building.Finally, if you're a Taylor Swift fan, this was a pretty big week. MIDNIGHTS, Taylor's 10th studio album just dropped. It seems Taylor Swift is as big as ever. Which makes me wonder: What exactly is it about her and her music that's so enduring? I sat down with Brittany Spanos, an avid swiftie, Rolling Stone writer, and the professor of a Taylor Swift class. We talk about how she's grown over the years, how she hasn't, and how she's navigated the music industry throughout it all.

Los Espookys is very odd and very good comedy series about a group of horror-loving friends who start up a business that provides scary experiences for their clients. It's co-written by two of its stars, comedians Julio Torres and Ana Fabrega. The second season is currently airing on HBO so we thought it would be a good time to encore our episode about the first season.
What better way to welcome in spooky season than with the return of our dear friend, advertising executive Julio Torres! Julio and Sam walk George through their new millennial food startup before Julio launches into his message for all the restaurants out there obsessed with reservations: Why not try living in the moment for a change! It's a call to arms so radical it might just work. Plus: The complicated politics of "after-work drinks," the dos and don'ts of business Zooms, and one final analysis of that one scene in the Katy Perry documentary. This time we really get to the bottom of it. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Julio Torres, creator and star of HBO's Los Espookys, plays our game about The Addams Family called, "Los Ookys." Joining him are panelists Tom Papa, Dulcé Sloan, and Hari Kondabolu.
Spooky season! It's here. Haunted houses are jamming up, the wind is howling and Los Espookys is back on HBO. Ana Fabrega & Julio Torres, the creators of the program, join Matt & Bow to discuss casting Kim Petras as the U.S. Secretary of State, how "And Just Like That" is truly international, music video acting, being in your "circus era", the reality of directing, the spectacle that is The Press Tour and how modern weddings should have more drama. Also, treatises on the status of television, the taste of medicine and the dexterity of statues. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Join the LOL crew as they sit down once again with the cast of Los Espookys. This time they chat with Cassandra Ciangherotti, Ana Fabrega, Julio Torres, and Bernardo Velasco about Season Two. Plus some Qué Lo Qué!

You probably haven't met a comedian quite like Julio Torres. Julio's work is highly visual and deeply inquisitive, often focusing on everyday objects or routine and giving it a surreal twist. His work will take you into the psyche of a Ferrero Rocher chocolate, empathize with the never-ending work of a Brita water filter, and leave you wondering if your toilet plunger has a dream job outside of the bathroom. He will ask you to accept the mythological while sharply lampooning U.S. immigration policy. Julio's drawn to asking questions about the status quo — but he's more interested in mining the humor from it than landing on any answers. That part's up to you. After immigrating from El Salvador to the U.S. for college, Julio did the rounds in New York City's stand-up scene before landing a gig writing at “Saturday Night Live.” For several years, he created innovative and exciting sketches for the show, many of which went viral: “Papyrus,” “Wells For Boys,” “Melania Moments”... the list goes on. But after a few years, Julio decided to leave 30 Rockefeller Plaza and strike out on his own. In 2019, he released a comedy special for HBO called, “My Favorite Shapes.” That same year, he also co-created the hit television show, “Los Espookys,” which he also writes, produces, and acts in. And this year, he took an unexpected turn into children's literature with his new picture book, “I Want To Be A Vase.” He's currently working on two new series for HBO and HBO Max, along with writing, directing, and starring in his filmmaking debut for A24. On this episode of Latino USA, Julio Torres talks about developing his own comedic style, his journey in the industry, and how he enjoys challenging audiences to look at the world from a different perspective.
