In this episode of Left of the Projector, I explore David Lynch's film, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, a prequel that examines the tragic story of Laura Palmer leading up to her death. Joined by filmmaker John Kennedy, we delve into Lynch's unique approach that blends psychological horror with human connection, examining the complex layers of trauma and abuse within Laura's character. Our conversation highlights how this film diverges from the series, revealing darker undertones and intricate symbolism. We analyze pivotal scenes, the impact of character dynamics, and the cultural commentary within the narrative, ultimately celebrating Lynch's artistry in weaving horror, nostalgia, and identity into a compelling exploration of the human condition.Jonathan KennedyIG: https://www.instagram.com/getradifiedhttps://jonkennedy.net/https://www.threads.net/@getradifiedLeft of the Projector Linkshttps://www.patreon.com/LeftoftheProjectorPodhttps://boxd.it/5T9O1https://leftoftheprojector.comhttps://instagram.com/leftoftheprojectorhttp://tiktok.com/@leftoftheprojectorpodhttps://www.threads.net/@leftoftheprojector
In this week's tribute, Janet, John, (and Pen) celebrate the life and career of a truly legendary artist, director, and filmmaker. He turned suburbia, teen angst, and small town life into objects of horror, admiration, and pity. Genius, artist, and madman… It's David Lynch! While Lynch had little interest in schoolwork growing up, a love for painting brought him to the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. He would later shock the movie business with a student film in response to the madness of America in the days of Vietnam. With a career spanning over five decades, Lynch is known for his incredibly vivid, unforgettable, and dreamlike films including Eraserhead (1977), The Elephant Man (1980), Dune (1984), Blue Velvet (1986), Wild at Heart, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992), Lost Highway (1997), Mulholland Drive (2001), and more. He received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement in 2006, an Academy Honorary Award, and five Primetime Emmy Award nominations for surrealist horror-mystery series Twin Peaks. This week, the gang's vacation to Twin Peaks has been interrupted by the murder of Laura Palmer…which Rory more than likely committed. I mean, who takes rolls of plastic wrap and a bundle marked “KILL TOOLS” on vacation? After sorting through the damning evidence, Twin Peak's sheriff Dave Gonzalez was quoted as saying, “Don't get used to Rory being on this stupid podcast for much longer.” Anyway, to kill time until Rory's inevitable arrest, the gang discusses, “TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME!”

On this week's show we discuss whether physical media is making a comeback and could a Bezel-less OLED be the future of large format TVs. We also read your emails and take a look at the week's news. News: Google kills off Nest Protect, partners with First Alert for new smart smoke detector Christie to collaborate with Dolby to develop the next generation of Dolby Vision laser projection systems YouTube Sees Record Viewing, Beats Disney in TV Viewing Share Other: 2025 Box-Office Aims To Hit $34 Billion Physical media is finally making a comeback, and here's the proof Despite a decline in overall physical media sales, which dipped below $1 billion in 2024, there are signs of resilience and growth in specific sectors. Major retailers like Best Buy and Target are phasing out physical media, but Sony's announcement of a new Blu-ray player, the UBP-X700/K, set for release in 2025, signals continued investment in the format. This player, while currently only available in Japan, supports 4K Blu-rays, which are region-free and growing in market share despite the higher cost compared to its predecessor. There is a niche but dedicated community keeping physical media alive, supported by boutique retailers like Criterion Collection and Arrow, which preserve films such as David Lynch's catalog, including the upcoming 4K release of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. Mainstream releases still often get physical versions, and affordable options abound online and in thrift stores, offering DVDs, Blu-rays, and 4K discs compatible with modern players. There are personal advantages of physical ownership, like better quality and reliability compared to streaming, which can be plagued by shifting availability and rising costs. While consoles may soon abandon disc drives and companies like LG have discontinued Blu-ray players, the 4K Blu-ray market is a bright spot, with growing demand evidenced by the sell-out of Oppenheimer's 4K release in 2023. The new Sony player supports Dolby Vision (though it requires manual toggling), enhancing the viewing experience over consoles like Xbox or PS5. The article concludes that 2025 is an opportune time to embrace physical media, especially for those frustrated with streaming, as it offers a tangible, cost-effective alternative with no risk of content disappearing—though it comes with minor inconveniences like disc-swapping for TV binges. The future remains uncertain, but the 4K sector offers hope for collectors. Full article here… Bezel-less tile OLED TVs could be the future of large-screen displays (from Tom's Guide) Samsung Display showcased a variety of innovative display technologies at MWC 2025, with a standout being their "bezel-less" OLED tile design. This concept involves combining smaller OLED panels, such as two 31.5-inch QD-OLED screens, to form larger displays with significantly reduced bezels—40% narrower than typical current market offerings. This makes the seams nearly invisible from a standard viewing distance, opening up possibilities for future OLED TV designs. The bezel-less OLED tiles could revolutionize large-screen TVs by improving portability and setup logistics. Unlike traditional massive TVs (e.g., 98- or 110-inch models), which are cumbersome and costly to ship and install, these tiles could be transported and assembled in smaller, manageable parts—ideal for urban dwellers in older buildings with limited access. Additionally, the design might simplify wall-mounting, potentially eliminating the need for complex mounts by allowing the tiles to sit flush against walls, reminiscent of concepts like Displace TV's suction-cup OLEDs. This technology could particularly enhance lifestyle TVs, such as Samsung's The Frame, by offering a sleek, frameless look that blends seamlessly into home decor. However, challenges remain—similar to MicroLED, the intricate engineering might make these TVs prohibitively expensive initially. While not yet ready for consumers, Samsung Display's tile concept hints at an exciting future for bigger, better, and more practical OLED TVs. Full article here… Let's Discuss Why This is a Good Thing: Easier Transport and Setup for Large TVs Simplified Wall-Mounting Enhanced Design for Lifestyle TVs Scalability and Customization Improved Visual Experience Easier Transport and Setup for Large TVs The tiled OLED concept tackles the logistical nightmare of moving and installing massive TVs. By breaking a large display (like a 115-inch screen) into smaller, manageable pieces (e.g., two 31.5-inch QD-OLED panels), it becomes far more practical to transport and assemble. This is a game-changer for people in tricky living situations—like those in high-rise apartments with no elevators or tight staircases—where hauling a giant, crated TV is a non-starter. Instead of wrestling with one unwieldy unit, you'd handle smaller components, making setup less of a Herculean task. Simplified Wall-Mounting The ultra-thin, virtually bezel-less design hints at a future where wall-mounting could be a breeze. These tiles seem to sit flush against surfaces, potentially reducing or even eliminating the need for bulky wall mounts and toolkits. While it's not clear if they'd use something like suction cups (à la Displace TV) or another method, the streamlined look suggests a setup that's less about drilling and more about placement. This could make mounting a TV—especially over a fireplace or in tight spaces—more accessible and less intimidating. Enhanced Design for Lifestyle TVs The bezel-less tile concept aligns perfectly with the aesthetic goals of lifestyle TVs, like Samsung's The Frame. A flush, frameless display could elevate the “TV as art” vibe, blending seamlessly into home decor. You could even add a custom frame around the tiles if desired, keeping the versatility intact. This design flexibility could redefine how TVs integrate into living spaces, making them less of an obtrusive tech piece and more of a stylish feature. Scalability and Customization Tiling smaller OLED panels to create a larger screen opens up possibilities for scalable TV sizes. Want a 65-inch TV today but a 98-inch tomorrow? In theory, you could add more tiles. While this might not be fully practical yet, the modular nature suggests a future where screen size isn't fixed at purchase, offering a level of adaptability that current TVs lack. Improved Visual Experience Shrinking bezels by 40% compared to standard displays means the seams between tiles are nearly invisible at normal viewing distances. This creates a more immersive, uninterrupted picture—crucial for OLED's strengths like deep blacks and vibrant colors. It's a step toward making massive OLED screens feel cohesive rather than patchwork, enhancing the viewing experience for movies, gaming, or VR applications. It's Not All Good News: Cost and Accessibility Manufacturing and Durability Challenges Installation Complexity Wall-Mounting Uncertainties Potential Visual Trade-Offs Cost and Accessibility Complex engineering often leads to high costs. Much like MicroLED TVs, which are expensive due to their manufacturing processes, these bezel-less OLED tiles could follow a similar path. If they hit the market, they might be priced out of reach for the average consumer. Manufacturing and Durability Challenges Shrinking bezels by 40% and tiling multiple panels together sounds impressive, but it raises questions about production complexity and long-term durability. Seamlessly connecting 31.5-inch QD-OLED panels could introduce weak points where the tiles meet, potentially leading to issues like uneven wear, panel misalignment over time, or vulnerability to damage during transport or installation. The "bezel-less" claim might also exaggerate real-world performance if micro-gaps or seams remain faintly visible up close. Installation Complexity While the concept promises to simplify transporting and setting up XXL TVs by breaking them into smaller components, the assembly process could still be a hurdle. Consumers might need precise instructions—or even professional help—to align and connect the tiles perfectly. If the panels don't lock together intuitively or require specialized tools, the setup could negate some of the portability benefits, especially for less tech-savvy users. Wall-Mounting Uncertainties The idea of tiles sitting flush against the wall (possibly without traditional mounts) is appealing, but it's unclear how practical this would be. If Samsung Display isn't using suction cups like Displace TV, the attachment method remains a mystery. Adhesive solutions could damage walls or lose strength over time, while a lack of standard mounting hardware might make the TVs harder to secure safely, especially in homes with kids or pets. The "glued-on" aesthetic might also limit repositioning or removal flexibility. Potential Visual Trade-Offs Tiling multiple OLED panels could introduce subtle visual inconsistencies, such as slight color or brightness variations between tiles, especially as they age. While the bezels are minimized, any imperfections in alignment or panel uniformity might become noticeable during close viewing or in scenes with solid colors, detracting from the premium OLED experience consumers expect.

Episode 65 - It is with a heavy heart that we release this episode, week 3 of David Lynch Month. The news broke yesterday that David Lynch has passed at the age of 79. Since we recorded this prior to the news breaking, we do not discuss his passing. In fact, there is some more criticism of Lynch as an artist by one of us, since we are still divided on his films (for the most part). But luckily we have the man behind the curtain, Matt, to give more of a perspective from someone who actually studied film. This week it's Wild at Heart (1990), and Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me (1992) Join us next week as we share our favorite Lynch moments so far, and discuss Lost Highway (1997) and The Straight Story (1999) and email us at mracfilmclub@gmail.com
Throwback from 2018. Mary Sweeney needs some air. “There has to be a flow of fast and slow, and a pause to allow the listener or the spectator to digest and to project their own thoughts.” She thinks I should leave more space in my podcasts, to let it breathe. She tells me this as we sit in the screened in porch behind her summer house in Madison, Wisconsin. As she tells me this, cicadas chirp loudly, as if to underscore her point: “Today's episode will not be edited! You will not remove us from this moment!” Mary Sweeney should know. She spent much of her career as a film editor, producer and writer collaborating with David Lynch. Beginning in 1985 with Blue Velvet, and continuing through the 2006 film Inland Empire, her editing credits include Blue Velvet (1986), Wild at Heart (1990), Twin Peaks (1991), Industrial Symphony (1991), Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992), On the Air (1992), Hotel Room(1993), Lost Highway (1996), The Straight Story (2000), Mulholland Drive (2001) and Baraboo (2009). The relationship with Lynch was productive, fruitful, and nuanced (the two were partners in work and in life for much of that time) and they have a son together. At the time of this interview, Mary was working as a consulting producer and writer on Matthew Weiner's series for Amazon, The Romanoffs. She is the Dino and Martha De Laurentiis Endowed Professor of film at USC, where she teaches Graduate Screenwriting Thesis and “Dreams, The Brain and Storytelling.” Before we had this conversation, Mary cheekily emailed me a list of topics that she would be happy to discuss. They included editing, producing, screenwriting, parenting, Paris, Cairo, pie baking, and the Catholic Church. Guess what we talked about? All of it. And we also talked at length about living and working in an intensely creative partnership with David Lynch for all those years (both personally and professionally), collaborating with one of the most innovative voices in film, and what's so great about coming from a big family. Visit the Patreon Page for an extra 20 minutes of juicy conversation that didn't make it into this edit. Thanks for listening. Episode 64 - This is week two of our David Lynch filmography and we are watching and talking Blue Velvet (1986) and Dune (1984). Although Dune came first chronologically we lead off with Blue Velvet to give it the bulk of the conversation. And although Blue Velvet is considered a classic of Lynch's and a staple in film school curriculum, the crew is divided on this one. This division leads us once again into a vortex. Will we find our way out? Tune in the find out. And tune in next week as we cover Wild at Heart (1990) and Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992) email us at mracfilmclub@gmail.com
In the small town of Deerfield WA, Theresa Banks (Pamela Gidley) is found, dead and wrapped in plastic. When the killer isn't found, the Gordon Cole (David Lynch) of the FBI, calls up Chester Diamond (Chris Isaak) and sends him, along with Sam Stanley (Kiefer Sutherland) to investigate. Meanwhile at headquarters, Special Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle Maclachlan) has a strange dream about the day before Phillip Jeffries (David Bowie) reappears and Chester disappears while on the hunt for a killer. Cooper has a vision about the next victim and asks fellow agent, Albert Rosenfield (Miguel Ferrer) to help him solve the upcoming case. This is where Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee) comes in, in the nearby town of Twin Peaks she's going nowhere fast. She's living a secret life that her best friend Donna (Moira Kelly) doesn't even know about, she's dating Bobby (Dana Ashbrook) and seeing James (James Marshall) on the side, heavy into cocaine provided by Leo Johnson (Eric DaRe) she's also half of the party twins with Ronette Pulaski (Phoebe Augustine) in sex clubs in Canada, run in part by the great Went, Jaques (Walter Olkewicz). Home for Laura is even worse, at night she's visited by entity BOB (Frank Silva) but the truth of what and who he his is even worse than she can imagine. After working on the short first season of TWIN PEAKS, David Lynch felt the pull back to feature length filmmaking when he was given a book called Wild At Heart by Barry Gifford. The book seemed ripe for a big screen adaptation and David Lynch immediately began work on it. Within a couple of months, he found himself in New Orleans with stars Nicolas Cage and Laura Dern, plus a host of regular Lynch collaborators. The production and release of WILD AT HEART was a whirlwind. The film went from the script stage to production in a matter of months, and within the year, the film was making its premire at the Cannes Film Festival, where it took home the festival's most prestigious prize, the Palm d'Or, a win that came with no small amount of controversy. In this episode of Cinema Shock — the season finale for our David Lynch: Absurd Encounters series — we will recount the story of how WILD AT HEART came to be, how it was conceived and produced, and how it was ultimately received by critics and audiences. While this is our final episode in our current series covering the career of David Lynch, our journey through Lynch's work is not over. In the coming weeks, we will be launching Fire Shock With Me, a TWIN PEAKS watch-along series where we will be working our way through Lynch's seminal TV series in its entirety. Those episodes will be available exclusively to our $5 and up subscribers on CinemaShock+, where you'll also find extended versions of all David Lynch episodes that include additional bonus segments. In this first installment of episodes exploring Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, your host John sits down with author Scott Ryan to discuss the film and Ryan's book Fire Walk With Me: Your Laura Disappeared. They look into the timeline of the film's production, from script to editing and everything in between. You get the origin of the Blue Rose, details on the Grandson, whether the film is a sequel or prequel, and the contributions of Sheryl Lee, Ron Garcia, Mary Sweeney, Sabrina Sutherland, Lori Eschler, and of course David Lynch. John and Scott also discuss the cultural reaction to the film, as well as peeking behind the curtain of Always Music in the Air, the book on Twin Peaks music that Scott is currently writing. https://www.tuckerdspress.com/product-page/fire-walk-with-me-your-laura-disappeared Production by Mitch Proctor and Area 42 Studios and SoundAdditional audio editing John Bernardyhttps://www.teepublic.com/user/ruminationsradionetworkwww.RuminationsRadioNetwork.comwww.instagram.com/RuminationsRadioNetworkwww.25yearslatersite.comInstagram: BlueRoseTaskForceTwitter: RuminationsRadioNetwork@RuminationsNTwitter: @BlueRoseTFpodhttps://www.patreon.com/RuminationsRadioEmail ruminationsradio@gmail.comEmail bluerosetaskforcepodcast@gmail.com ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
One of the more harrowing films we've covered on the podcast (and the second film we've covered in 2024 with a memorable “gobble gobble” line), 1992's TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME was not the quirky, enjoyable plotline wrap-up fans of Twin Peaks wanted. David Lynch instead challenged the audience to identify with Laura Palmer's humanity and pain, making her a real person - not just a girl wrapped in plastic. THE FIRST OMEN director Arkasha Stevenson joins us to talk about how this film (and WILD AT HEART) inspired her to become a filmmaker, the uncanny experience of watching it without any prior knowledge of the Twin Peaks series, and the directorial choices Lynch makes that create the film's deeply unsettling atmosphere. It's hard to believe that this enduring series from series creator David Lynch only aired for two seasons in its initial run. (There was a subsequent season in 2017 and a major motion picture Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me.) For this episode, we review and recap the pilot tv movie Northwest Passage, written by Lynch and Mark Frost, aired in April 1990. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098936/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0278784/?ref_=ttep_ep1 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twin_Peaks https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0278784/?ref_=ttep_ep1 https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001492/?ref_=tt_cl_t_1 https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001492/awards/?ref_=nm_awd https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0648920/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cl_t2 https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001223/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cl_t6

From wiki: Dracula: Pages from a Virgin's Diary is a 2002 horror film directed by Guy Maddin, budgeted at $1.7 million[1] and produced for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) as a dance film documenting a performance by the Royal Winnipeg Ballet adapting Bram Stoker's novel Dracula. Maddin elected to shoot the dance film in a fashion uncommon for such films, through close-ups and using jump cuts.[2] Maddin also stayed close to the source material of Stoker's novel, emphasizing the xenophobia in the reactions of the main characters to Dracula (played by Zhang Wei-Qiang in Maddin's film).”NEXT WEEK: It Follows (2014) Follow them across the internet:Bloodhaus: https://www.bloodhauspod.com/https://twitter.com/BloodhausPodhttps://www.instagram.com/bloodhauspod/Drusilla Adeline:https://www.sisterhydedesign.com/https://letterboxd.com/sisterhyde/Joshua Conkelhttps://www.joshuaconkel.com/https://www.instagram.com/joshua_conkel/https://letterboxd.com/JoshuaConkel/

David Lynch and Mark Frost's Twin Peaks has been a touchstone of Weird Studies since the podcast's inception. Back in 2018, Phil and JF recorded Episode 1: Garmonbozia while still reeling from the series' third season, which aired on Showtime the year before. Now, in preparation for their upcoming course (https://www.nuralearning.com) on Twin Peaks, they watched the third season again and recorded this episode. Their conversation touched on the virtues of late style in the arts, the divergence of knowing and understanding, the fate of Agent Dale Cooper, and the dream logic of the _Twin Peaks _universe.
