But if man could live by bread alone—specifically pre-meal, restaurant bread—which bread would it be? Whitney Capps and Russ Greer plumb the depths of appetizer bread to discover which one stands alone. If you're not hungry when you start listening, you will be when it's all said and done. We'd love to hear from you! Man Shall Not Live by Bread Alone | First Sunday in Lent | Luke 4:1-13 | March 9, 2025Join us for this powerful Lenten sermon as we explore Luke 4:1-13, where Jesus is tempted in the wilderness but stands firm on the Word of God. As we begin this First Sunday in Lent, we reflect on Christ's victory over Satan's temptations and how His obedience fulfills what Israel failed to do.In this message, we uncover the three temptations of Jesus: the temptation of the flesh (turning stones into bread), the temptation of power (worshiping Satan for the kingdoms of the world), and the temptation of testing God (throwing Himself from the temple). Each of these trials mirrors the spiritual battles we face today. But our victory is found in Christ, who overcame the devil for us.How can we resist temptation, trust in God's Word, and rely on Christ in our daily struggles? Watch this sermon to be strengthened in faith and encouraged to cling to the true Bread of Life, Jesus Christ.
We are tempted to forget who we are and whose we are; Lent is a season of remembering our true selves through reflection, reconciliation, and reconnection on the journey toward the cross and the empty tomb.

In this message, Pastor Caleb discusses the importance of the Word of God. God's people should not live by the temporal things or the natural things but live by what God says. What God says brings life and supply to those who obey. God's people do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God. This week, we explore why God's Word is more than an optional extra—it's essential for our spiritual survival. Using Deuteronomy 8:1-3 and Matthew 4:1-11, we see how Scripture sustains, strengthens, and guards us against temptation. Discover how daily engagement with God's Word nourishes our souls and equips us to live faithfully in a world full of challenges. Contemplate these questions as you listen to this week's message: How does the experience of Israel in the wilderness illustrate our need for God's Word in our daily lives? Why is it important to rely on Scripture as our defense against temptation, as Jesus did in the wilderness? In what ways can you make God's Word more central to your life, ensuring it nourishes and sustains you? “To survive does not mean one is living,” theologian Dorothee Soelle explains in her book “Death by Bread Alone.” She makes the distinction between our existence in the world and the depth of life we find in God. We can be so busy with life and our busy schedules that we can neglect our relationship with God and our neighbor. Yet, our souls, not just our bodies, need to be nourished. We need the bread of life. After all, we are not called to just survive, but to live…and to live abundantly.

She will share how God uses bread throughout the Bible to teach us about his character and provision for us, as well as how the chemistry of breadmaking itself reveals the beauty of our Creator.Kendall Vanderslice is a baker, writer, and the founder of the Edible Theology Project. A graduate of Duke Divinity School (Master of Theological Studies), Boston University (MLA Gastronomy), and Wheaton College (BA Anthropology), she has committed her life to the study of food and community formation.
