Man Shall Not Live by Bread Alone | First Sunday in Lent | Luke 4:1-13 | March 9, 2025Join us for this powerful Lenten sermon as we explore Luke 4:1-13, where Jesus is tempted in the wilderness but stands firm on the Word of God. As we begin this First Sunday in Lent, we reflect on Christ's victory over Satan's temptations and how His obedience fulfills what Israel failed to do.In this message, we uncover the three temptations of Jesus: the temptation of the flesh (turning stones into bread), the temptation of power (worshiping Satan for the kingdoms of the world), and the temptation of testing God (throwing Himself from the temple). Each of these trials mirrors the spiritual battles we face today. But our victory is found in Christ, who overcame the devil for us.How can we resist temptation, trust in God's Word, and rely on Christ in our daily struggles? Watch this sermon to be strengthened in faith and encouraged to cling to the true Bread of Life, Jesus Christ.

This week, we explore why God's Word is more than an optional extra—it's essential for our spiritual survival. Using Deuteronomy 8:1-3 and Matthew 4:1-11, we see how Scripture sustains, strengthens, and guards us against temptation. Discover how daily engagement with God's Word nourishes our souls and equips us to live faithfully in a world full of challenges. Contemplate these questions as you listen to this week's message: How does the experience of Israel in the wilderness illustrate our need for God's Word in our daily lives? Why is it important to rely on Scripture as our defense against temptation, as Jesus did in the wilderness? In what ways can you make God's Word more central to your life, ensuring it nourishes and sustains you? Pastor Mike, Sermons, www.yuma1st.org

“To survive does not mean one is living,” theologian Dorothee Soelle explains in her book “Death by Bread Alone.” She makes the distinction between our existence in the world and the depth of life we find in God. We can be so busy with life and our busy schedules that we can neglect our relationship with God and our neighbor. Yet, our souls, not just our bodies, need to be nourished. We need the bread of life. After all, we are not called to just survive, but to live…and to live abundantly.

Moses urges the people to remember the trials they face and how the Lord humbled them to teach them dependence on Him, emphasizing that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. This chapter highlights the importance of obedience to God's commandments as a condition for prosperity in the Promised Land, warning against the dangers of forgetting God and becoming prideful in times of abundance. The Rev. David Boisclair, pastor of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Overland, MO joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study Deuteronomy 8. Come along as we dive into the timeless wisdom of Deuteronomy. This ancient book is more than history; it's a vibrant blueprint for living in harmony with God's will. Discover the profound teachings on law, justice, and morality, and hear how they resonate in our lives today. Deuteronomy calls us to obedience, love for our neighbor, and the crucial task of imparting faith to future generations. It's a narrative of love, responsibility, and the blessings of faithfulness, juxtaposed with warnings against forgetting our covenant with God.
