Living Our Beliefs
How Faith Can Evolve Through Change – Aaron Solberg

Living Our Beliefs

Episode 98.  (replay of Episode 78)Over the last two episodes with Judith Pajo and Zeyneb Sayilgan, we've talked quite a bit about faith challenges and dealing with changes in life that impact religious practice. Those changes have included moving country. With that in mind, I wanted to replay an episode from 2024 that addresses these themes among others. Aaron Solberg was raised in an Orthodox Jewish home in New York. As a young adult, he traversed several spiritual thresholds, eventually converting to Christianity. He is now a minister in the Anglican church. He has also traded in the city for the remote wilderness of Canada. In this conversation, he describes the path he's traveled and the challenges he continues to face. While his story is unique and unusual, I believe the threads that run through it will find resonance. He offers reminders that challenges are a part of life, and that walking the path and remembering, even cherishing, your past remains with you. Highlights: Jewish practice seen as "legalistic," leading to feelings of obligation and guilt.Importance of structure and discipline.Appreciation for communal aspects of both Jewish and Christian services.Shift from fear-based obedience to love-driven practices in Christianity.Human struggle with discipline and imperfection.Bio:Father Aaron Solberg is an Anglican priest, composer, husband, and father living in the Canadian North. A convert from Judaism, he originally worked as a conductor and cellist in Germany before feeling a calling to ministry. After studying theology, he served in Baker Lake, Nunavut, (in the Canadian Arctic) and now leads St. John's Anglican Church in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories. He is the father of two young boys and writes about family life and faith, fostering a deeper understanding of spirituality within his community. In his free time, he focuses on writing and composing new music for various ensembles. Transcript on BuzzsproutMore episodes with converts:Katrina KincadeRabbi Tara FeldmanJeanne BlasbergSocial Media and other links for Aaron: Website – www.thesolbergs.family Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/theanglicanfamily/Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/theanglicanfamilyTikTok – https://www.tiktok.com/@theanglicanfamily Transcript on BuzzsproutSocial Media and other links for Méli:Website – the Talking with God ProjectMeli's emailLinkedIn – Meli SolomonFacebook – Meli SolomonFollow the podcast! The Living Our Beliefs podcast is part of the Talking with God Project.

What can Christians on the right and left continue to learn about the experience and discipleship of trans people and those with gender incongruence?Today we'll be looking into some of the tough questions of transgender anthropology and pastoral care. But instead of debating directly over the questions (Should we use preferred pronouns? What is just legislation? How do we talk to kids? To affirm, or not to affirm?), we concentrate on how to care for people. Our two guests today, while not in substantial theological disagreement about trans topics, bring to their different experiences, approaches, and relationships lots of much-needed nuance, and some timely new questions, to a conversation grounded in traditional Christian theology. Can we question aspects of trans-anthropology as needed, or question current rhetoric or practices, but in the cause of charity, honesty, and human flourishing rather than against it? How do the right and left get caught in echo chambers here? How do we affirm the flawed gifts of the human body, while engaging its most painful experiences? How can we learn better to love and trust people? Our guests today are Dr. Abigail Favale and Pieter Valk. Abby is a writer and professor in the McGrath Institute for Church Life at the University of Notre Dame. She has an academic background in gender studies and feminist literary criticism, and now writes and teaches on topics related to women and gender from a Catholic perspective. Her latest book is The Genesis of Gender: A Christian Theory. Pieter is a sought-after author and speaker on discernment, vocational singleness, and LGBT+ topics. Pieter is also the Founder and Director ofEquip, the leading coaching and training solution for theologically-traditional churches aspiring to be places where LGBT+ people thrive according to God's wisdom. He is also a teacher and diaconate explorer in the Anglican Church in North America.Pieter's Christianity Today article with stats from the Us Versus Us reportAbby's websitePieter's websiteRegister for a Living Church conferenceGive to support this podcastMentioned in this episode:Click here to learn more about the Transforming Leaders Program

What was Paul's legacy to Christians? Paul was a man that was given a real vision. He was an apostle to the Gentiles and he was a man on the move. In many senses we might think of the Apostle Paul in today's terminology as a church planter, but not one who would plant a church in Jasper, Alabama and then stay there for the next 20 years. Instead, he would be like one who planted a church at Jasper, build up some leadership there in that local congregation, and then he's going to move on to Pell City, Alabama - Paul is on the move. >>Watch on YouTubeDr. Mark Gignilliat is professor of divinity at Beeson Divinity School, where he teaches courses in Old Testament and Hebrew, and also serves as theologian in residence at St. Peter's Anglican Church in Birmingham. Dr. Gignilliat is married to Naomi, and they have four children.

Reader: John Hargrave Preacher: Jonathan Smith Recalling the big picture message from the first week, we are ordinary people empowered by the Holy Spirit to witness to the Lord Jesus to the ends of the earth. In today's message from Acts 2:14-41, the apostle Peter explains what the people are seeing and hearing and why it is happening. The Old Covenant has been replaced by a New Covenant, where the Holy Spirit is poured out upon all who find their lives in Jesus, no matter the circumstance. Because God sees Jesus when he looks at those who call Jesus "Lord", God will NEVER remove the Holy Spirit from us. This is new! Unlike the Old Covenant, God would give his Spirit to a few and only for a specific purpose, and once that purpose was done, he would remove his Spirit because the person was not holy and righteous. But not now! Red Door is an Anglican Church in Melbourne, Australia. We exist to be a community of people helping people make all of life all about Jesus.

Ep. 304 Erin Moniz - Knowing and Being Known: Expanding and Redefining Intimacy

Shifting Culture

In today's episode, we're exploring intimacy - a concept that's far more complex than most of us realize. My guest, Erin Moniz, has been studying how we connect, disconnect, and misunderstand relationships in our current cultural moment. We'll dig into some critical questions: What does intimacy actually mean beyond romantic relationships? How have cultural messages - both inside and outside the church - distorted our understanding of connection? And what might a more holistic approach to knowing and being known look like? Erin brings a unique perspective as a college chaplain who's counseled countless emerging adults navigating relationships. We'll discuss how technology impacts our connections, why friendships matter as much as romantic partnerships, and how the gospel offers a different framework for understanding human relationships. This isn't a prescriptive how-to conversation, but an exploration of our fundamental human need for genuine connection. We'll challenge some assumptions about singleness, marriage, and community, and hopefully provide a more nuanced view of intimacy. So join us.Rev. Erin F. Moniz (DMin, Trinity School for Ministry) is a deacon in the Anglican Church in North America and associate chaplain and director for chapel at Baylor University, where she disciples emerging adults and journeys with them toward healthy, gospel-centered relationships. She is a trained conciliator, mediator, and conflict coach. She enjoys content creation, playing music, being outdoors, and narrating the inner monologue of her two cats. Reader: Mel Truong Preacher: Jonathan Smith Recalling the big picture message from the first week, we are ordinary people empowered by the Holy Spirit to witness to the Lord Jesus to the ends of the earth. In today's message from Acts 2:1-13, God sends his Holy Spirit upon the apostles at Pentecost. The Holy Spirit comes like Wind and Fire, synonomous with the way God has appeared many times in the past throughout the Old Testament, and like wind, we cannot control the actions of God's Spirit. However, as a church, we need to ask ourselves if we are truly welcoming The Spirit or are we hindering The Spirit with our actions. Red Door is an Anglican Church in Melbourne, Australia. We exist to be a community of people helping people make all of life all about Jesus.

It's Thursday, May 8th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Iran continues to imprison Christian pastor and wife Authorities in Iran continue to hold a pastor's wife, 56-year-old Lida Alexani, in solitary confinement after arresting the pastor, reports Article 18. Iranian-Armenian pastor Joseph Shahbazian was arrested in February and sent to the infamous Evin Prison in Tehran. He has faced prison time before for participating in a house church and collecting tithes. Authorities also arrested his wife last month. Iran has criminalized offering tithes to support church activities. The country is ranked ninth on the Open Doors' World Watch List of nations where it is most difficult to be a Christian.  India launched air strikes on Pakistan On Tuesday, India launched air strikes on Pakistan. India said it was in retaliation for an attack last month from alleged Pakistani nationals. India and Pakistan are on the brink of a wider conflict. Local church leaders are calling for Christians to pray for the countries. Bishop Nadeem Kamran is the head of the Anglican Church of Pakistan's Diocese of Lahore. He told Christian Daily International, “As the fear of war looms over the subcontinent, I ask all Christians in the two countries to observe … a day of prayer and fasting for peace in the region.” In 1 Timothy 2:1-2, the Apostle Paul wrote, “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence.” Trump's truce with Houthis On Tuesday, President Donald Trump announced a truce with the Houthis in Yemen. The United States has been carrying out strikes on the Houthis in Yemen for weeks. This is in response to the Houthis attacks on international shipping in the Red Sea. Despite the truce, the Houthis said they will continue attacks on Israel in support of Palestinians in Gaza. Listen to Trump's comments at an Oval Office meeting. TRUMP: “The Houthis have announced that they don't want to fight anymore. We will honor that. We will stop the bombings. They have capitulated.” Trump will rebuild and reopen Alcatraz off San Francisco coast President Trump announced Sunday he is directing the Bureau of Prisons to rebuild and reopen Alcatraz. The small island is located 1.25 miles offshore from San Francisco near the Golden Gate Strait. The island was developed in the mid-19th century with facilities for a lighthouse, a military fortification, and a military prison. In 1934, the island was converted into a federal prison, Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary. The strong currents around the island and cold water temperatures made escape nearly impossible. The prison became one of the most notorious in American history. Trump posted on Truth Social that the infamous former prison will “house America's most ruthless and violent Offenders. We will no longer be held hostage to criminals, thugs, and judges that are afraid to do their job and allow us to remove criminals, who came into our Country illegally. The reopening of ALCATRAZ will serve as a symbol of Law, Order, and JUSTICE.” The prison closed 60 years ago, but once housed the likes of Al Capone, George “Machine Gun” Kelly, and James “Whitey” Bulger. HHS denounces misguided treatments for gender confusion The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released a report last Thursday, denouncing so-called treatments for gender confusion. The study evaluated the impact of transgender drugs and surgeries on children.  The department noted, “These interventions carry risk of significant harms including infertility/sterility, sexual dysfunction, impaired bone density accrual, adverse cognitive impacts, cardiovascular disease and metabolic disorders, psychiatric disorders, surgical complications, and regret.” Federal Reserve keeps interest rate in the 4.25%-4.5% range The Federal Reserve decided to keep interest rates unchanged on Wednesday.  The Fed's benchmark interest rate remains at 4.25% to 4.5%. The Fed warned of potentially higher unemployment and inflation as the economy adjusts to President Trump's tariff plan. Meanwhile, Trump continues to call for lower interest rates. World's largest page of Bible just printed to honor Gutenberg Press And finally, the International Gutenberg Society printed the world's largest page of the Bible, measuring 38 square yards, on April 26th, 2025 in Mainz, Germany. The event commemorated the 625th anniversary of the birth of Johannes Gutenberg. The German inventor created the moveable-type printing press. And he produced the first printed version of the Bible. The Gutenberg printing press revolutionized the dissemination of the Bible, making it more accessible to a wider audience than ever before. Prior to Gutenberg's invention, Bibles were hand-copied, a laborious process that made them expensive and rare. The printing press allowed for mass production, increasing availability and lowering costs. This led to a surge in literacy, the spread of the Bible, and Christianity. The commemorative event showcased a massive copy of the first page of John's Gospel. It was made from the largest industrial paper rolls available and covered nearly 400 square feet.  John 1:1-4 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Thursday, May 8th, my 59th birthday, in the year of our Lord 2025. Subscribe for free by Spotify, Amazon Music or by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com.
