Et quodcumque ligaveris super terram, erit ligatum et in caelis : et quodcumque solveris super terram, erit solutum et in caelis.[18] "Thou art Peter": As St. Peter, by divine revelation, here made a solemn profession of his faith of the divinity of Christ; so in recompense of this faith and profession, our Lord here declares to him the dignity to which he is pleased to raise him: viz., that he to whom he had already given the name of Peter, signifying a rock, St. John 1. 42, should be a rock indeed, of invincible strength, for the support of the building of the church; in which building he should be, next to Christ himself, the chief foundation stone, in quality of chief pastor, ruler, and governor; and should have accordingly all fulness of ecclesiastical power, signified by the keys of the kingdom of heaven.[18] "Upon this rock": The words of Christ to Peter, spoken in the vulgar language of the Jews which our Lord made use of, were the same as if he had said in English, Thou art a Rock, and upon this rock I will build my church. So that, by the plain course of the words, Peter is here declared to be the rock, upon which the church was to be built: Christ himself being both the principal foundation and founder of the same. Where also note, that Christ, by building his house, that is, his church, upon a rock, has thereby secured it against all storms and floods, like the wise builder, [Matt 7:24-25].[18] "The gates of hell": That is, the powers of darkness, and whatever Satan can do, either by himself, or his agents. For as the church is here likened to a house, or fortress, built on a rock; so the adverse powers are likened to a contrary house or fortress, the gates of which, that is, the whole strength, and all the efforts it can make, will never be able to prevail over the city or church of Christ. By this promise we are fully assured, that neither idolatry, heresy, nor any pernicious error whatsoever shall at any time prevail over the church of Christ.[19] "Loose upon earth": The loosing the bands of temporal punishments due to sins, is called an indulgence; the power of which is here granted.

A Clarecastle native is bringing the world of opera home this summer.    Tenor Dean Power will perform a special concert at SS Peter and Paul's Church in Clarecastle on July 14th, alongside mezzo soprano Gemma Ní Bhriain and pianist James Hurley.   The evening will feature opera, musical theatre and Irish classics, as part of a busy summer of community events in the village.  Dean joined Alan Morrissey earlier to talk about the concert, his musical journey and returning to perform in his hometown. This feast is almost entirely devoted to St Peter, the Bishop of Rome, the great Apostle of the Gentiles being more specially honored on June 30. The lessons and prayers of this Mass describe how his Lord and Master Jesus Christ prepared the fervent Apostle, St Peter, for the supreme office of the Papacy.After the descent of the Holy Ghost St Peter preached the Gospel in Judea and was cast into prison by Herod Agrippa. He was miraculously delivered by an Angel and established his see first at Antioch, and then finally at Rome, where the first pope exercised for twenty-five years the Supreme Authority vested in him by Christ Himself. Then he was arrested, and like St Paul suffered martyrdom A.D. 65. This Feast marks the day of the translation of their relics.

He is declared by our Lord to be the Rock on which the Church rests securely.

We celebrate the Apostles Peter and Paul, who served the Church in their own ways, as Christ called them. Both sometimes errored, but Christ called them all the same. And they said, "Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets." He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" Simon Peter replied, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." And Jesus answered him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar Jona! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."

The funeral of the Bishop Emeritus of Killaloe, Willie Walsh will take place later today. The former Bishop of Killaloe, teacher at St. Flannan's College and incumbent President of Clare GAA passed away peacefully last Wednesday, at the age of 90. Bishop Willie's Requiem Mass will take place in SS Peter and Paul Cathedral, Ennis, Co. Clare today at 1pm, with burial afterwards in the church grounds. On last Thursday's Morning Focus, we were joined by the Bishop of Killaloe, Fintan Monahan, who paid tribute to Willie Walsh, while so many of you sent in such kind messages and lovely memories of the man. To pay further tribute to Bishop Willie, Alan Morrissey was joined by parish priest in the Diocese of Killaloe, Brendan Quinlivan and Sociologist, Author and former Manager of Clare Senior Hurlers, Fr Harry Bohan. SS Peter and Paul Cathedral in Ennis is the venue for what promises to be a special concert this Friday, December 20th, at 8:15 pm. The Cantare Choir and Orchestra, under the baton of musical director Michael Hennessy, will be joined on the night by guest soprano Helen Houlihan, with vocalists Monica Morgan and Felim Collins. The proceeds from the event are in support of Samaritans, Ennis. To discuss this further, Alan Morrissey was joined in-studio by choir members, Felim Collins, Monica Morgan, Sean Ruane, Mick Hennessy, and Trióna Marren O'Grady. He is declared by our Lord to be the Rock on which the Church rests securely.

Cantare Choir and Orchestra present Vivaldi's Gloria and Summer from The Four Seasons plus a selection of your favourite classic string pieces on Saturday, the 11th of May. The concert, which will raise money for Pieta and Slainte an Chláir, will also feature a variety of soloists, including renowned sopranos, Regina Nathan and Helen Houlihan. To tell us what you can expect on Saturday, Alan Morrissey was joined by Michael Hennessy, Helen Houlihan, Des Ryan and Carmel Honan.

St Clement I, was a companion and disciple of SS Peter and Paul, and the third successor of St. Peter. He was exiled by the emperor Trajan and cast into the sea A.D. 100.

And entering in, he walked through Jericho.Et ingressus perambulabat Jericho.  2 And behold, there was a man named Zacheus, who was the chief of the publicans, and he was rich.Et ecce vir nomine Zachaeus : et hic princeps erat publicanorum, et ipse dives :  3 And he sought to see Jesus who he was, and he could not for the crowd, because he was low of stature.et quaerebat videre Jesum, quis esset : et non poterat prae turba, quia statura pusillus erat.  4 And running before, he climbed up into a sycamore tree, that he might see him; for he was to pass that way.Et praecurrens ascendit in arborem sycomorum ut videret eum : quia inde erat transiturus.  5 And when Jesus was come to the place, looking up, he saw him, and said to him: Zacheus, make haste and come down; for this day I must abide in thy house.Et cum venisset ad locum, suspiciens Jesus vidit illum, et dixit ad eum : Zachaee, festinans descende : quia hodie in domo tua oportet me manere.  6 And he made haste and came down; and received him with joy.Et festinans descendit, et excepit illum gaudens.  7 And when all saw it, they murmured, saying, that he was gone to be a guest with a man that was a sinner.Et cum viderent omnes, murmurabant, dicentes quod ad hominem peccatorem divertisset.  8 But Zacheus standing, said to the Lord: Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have wronged any man of any thing, I restore him fourfold.Stans autem Zachaeus, dixit ad Dominum : Ecce dimidium bonorum meorum, Domine, do pauperibus : et si quid aliquem defraudavi, reddo quadruplum.  9 Jesus said to him: This day is salvation come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham.Ait Jesus ad eum : Quia hodie salus domui huic facta est : eo quod et ipse filius sit Abrahae.  10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.Venit enim Filius hominis quaerere, et salvum facere quod perierat. The two Basilicas, of St Peter on Vatical Hill and of St Paul without the Walls, on the Ostian Way, were erected by Constantine on the site of the martrydom of these Apostles. They were consecrated by St Sylvester on November 18 A.D. 325.
