Deuteronomy 3 tells of two momentous events prior to Israel's entry into the Promised Land. The first of these was the victory over the other great king on the eastern side of the River Jordan – the defeat of the giant king of Bashan, Og. Although we can tell how tall Og was the Scripture tells us that his bed was approximately 4.15 metres long, ie 13 foot 6 inches for those of my age. That makes him considerably taller than the Philistine giant Goliath, who was between 3 metres and 3.2 metres depending on the length of the cubit. So Israel conquers Og and his people and took possession of their territory in Bashan, which was a part of Gilead. The record tells us that Reuben and Gad occupied this land and its cities – which includes the region of Jair, one of the famous deliverers in the time of the Judges. The extent of the territory is described. The soldiers of the Reubenites and the Gadites were commanded to pass over and aid their brothers from the other 10 tribes in the conquest of the land to the west of the Jordan River. The event with the greatest impact on the nation was the LORD's forbidding Moses from entering into the Promised Land. Verses 23-29 describe why his Sovereign forbad Moses' entry. They tell of Moses' plea to God and also Yahweh's graciously allowing of Moses to see the land he had longed for; and for which he had carried and encouraged Israel for forty years; to guide them and ready them for their future inheritance. Moses will, of course, have an inheritance in the Land in the coming kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ. In Proverbs 30 we have the sixth section of the book. He was not Solomon who was the son of David. Agur says that he was the son of Jakeh. The Hebrew word for Agur means “the Gatherer”, ie one who collected wise sayings. There are 13 wise sayings, or proverbs, recorded in chapter 30. We cannot speculate on the identity of Agur; but we are told that in his era there were several other wise men – perhaps Agur was among those. When the book of Proverbs was finalised in the days of Ezra a selection of 13 of Agur's proverbs were included. Chapter 30 centre around the theme of humility. Verses 1-4 tell of the grandeur and impossibility of searching out the depths of God's Word. It is of the utmost importance that we understand and appreciate the significance of these first four verses. Agur speaks of the vital nature of divine revelation. The thoughts align with Moses' words in Deuteronomy 30 verses 11-16; which the Apostle Paul explains in Romans 10:6-17. The words of verse 4 focus upon our Almighty God, Yahweh, and His incomparable Son our Lord Jesus Christ and they were the subject of David's closing prayer recorded in Psalm 72 verses 17-20. Verses 5-6 are equally important as the Scriptures tell us that the LORD has magnified His Word above His Name. Every Word from God is pure. And it strengthens and protects those who honour it through seeking to understand our Sovereign's Word and exhibit it daily in their lives. Be careful in the wise and proper explanation of that Word. Do not seek to add to it, nor take away from its saving truth – see Revelation 1 verse 3; 22 verses 18-19. Verses 7-9 provide the formula for a contented and God-centred life. Satisfaction with sufficient and the abhorring of covetousness. The Apostle Paul offers the same counsel in 1 Timothy 6:6-10. Verse 10 tells us to be fair and gracious in our speech – cp Ephesians 4 verses 25, 29. By way of contrast verses 11-14 focus on a proud and selfish generation through the poem Agur gives. These words in concert with the foregoing provide us with the opportunity for self examination. Verses 15-17 are another poem telling of the insatiable appetite of a leech; of a barren women; of a parched earth; and of the grave. By finishing with Sheol (the pit, the grave) we are being warned that a failure to heed God's Word and to obey Him will see us hopelessly and forever entombed there. Verses 18-20 tell us about four marvellous and baffling things; and a contrasting fifth imponderable is added in harmony with the two women of the book – wisdom and folly – the Godly companion and the self interested and destructive harlot. The four marvels are how does an eagle fly; how does a snake slither across a rock; how does move without a trace through the sea; and love, who can explain that. Verses 20-23 speak in a sonnet of four disturbing and unbearable behaviours – an oppressive slave when he rises to become a ruler; a fool who is happy with himself/herself; an unloved woman in a disastrous marriage; and a maidservant who steals her master's affection from his wife (compare Hagar and Sarah). Verses 24-28 tell of four tiny, yet powerful creatures, which are proactive and accomplish great things by acting together – the ants; the rock badgers; the locusts; and the house lizards. Verses 29-31 a poem extolling the grandeur of four created beasts – the majestic lion; the strutting cock, or rooster; the male goat; and a powerful king leading his army. Verses 32-33 the closing advice to control your anger and avoid the otherwise disastrous consequences. In John 13 we have Jesus' demonstration to his disciples of love, when he girds himself with a towel in the form of a servant (Philippians 2) and washes their feet. When Jesus came to Peter he was told you're not going to wash my feet. He was told unless I wash your feet you can have no part with me. Peter's response was, “Wash all of me”. Jesus said that the believers need only their feet be washed. Jesus had given the great example of loving service; and that from the one who was their Lord and Master. We must follow that exemplary service. Our Lord spoke of his betrayal and after given the sop – a sign of friendship – to Judas the betrayer left intent on completing the deliverance of his Lord into the hands of Christ's enemies. When Judas left Jesus' response was, “Just now was the Son of Man glorified”. He told the disciples of a new commandment, which was not entirely new, but certainly it was to the extent our Lord demonstrated in the laying down of his life revealed ‘agape' to an extent never been seen before. Peter's threefold denial was prophesied. In chapter 14 we are told that Jesus is, “the way, the truth and the life” and that no one can come to the Father but through the Lord. Philip said, “Show us the Father and that will be enough. Jesus response was “Haven't you been with me long enough to have seen the Father's character revealed?” Jesus promised the Holy Spirit as their Comforter, when he was to be taken from them. They would be left with peace – not the absence of strife, but the understanding that all things are in the Father's control. So they left the upper room for further instruction.
David A. Davis preaches on Luke 22:1-23 on Palm Sunday. April 13, 2025.
(2 Timothy 3:16) Every Word from God is "God breathed"—it is connected to His very nature and life. Today we learn more about how God gave His Word to man and see the amazing proofs of divine inspiration in the Bible. (0975250326) ----more---- The Inspiration of Scripture Is God perfect? If God is perfect, would everything that comes from God comes out of God? Be perfect. If that's the case, then would you say God's breath? Is perfect. Someone says, that's a strange line of questioning. Not at all, because the Bible says that the word of God literally was breathed out from God. In other words, it came directly from God's very nature. It came from God's heart to us. Here's the verse 2 Timothy 3:16 says, "16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:" Now, we can't believe that the word of God is profitable if we don't believe the word of God is inspired. We use the word inspired fairly loosely today. Writers say, I had a moment of inspiration. Speakers say I felt inspired to say something, but the word inspiration in two Timothy 3:16 is not some some passing surface emotion. No, the word inspiration there literally means God-breathed. It was breathed out from the very nature of God. It came directly from God. To man. Is God's Word Perfect? So I ask again, is God perfect? Oh, yes. God is perfect. If God is perfect, would everything that comes from God be perfect? Yes. Everything that comes directly from God would be perfect, untainted by sin and corruption. If everything that comes out of God is perfect, then would not the very God-breathed words of Scripture be perfect? One of the great struggles that people have is whether the word of God can be trusted to be perfect in every way. My question is this: Does it come from a perfect God? We're going to talk more about how God preserved his word through the ages and God's promise to do that. But let me just say right up front that to question the authority and the accurateness of scripture is to question the very nature of God. In fact, the Bible says that God has set his word above his name. Do you understand? God's name is on the line? Is God powerful enough to preserve his word? Is God wise enough to give his word perfectly the first time? All of this goes to our theology, to what we believe about God. So I read again that all scripture is given by the inspiration of God. Aren't you glad it's been given that God spoke through the Bible writers? So that when they wrote it was without error, without omission, and without exaggeration, we might say it this way. It was the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. Human Penman and the Bible And that doesn't mean that God made men robots. He never does that. He allows men to work with him. What a privilege to be laborers together with God. And such was the case for these Bible writers. The truth was conveyed in such a way that it employed those men. For example, the human penman personal experience comes out. There's no doubt. They're giving firsthand accounts many times. You can see Peter's personality shine through. You can hear Paul's educational background come through their historical accounts and read the gospel according to Luke. And it's very obvious that a medical doctor, a physician, someone with knowledge of the human body and of those types of things is writing a very detailed account. So, the information is given directly from God through men, and he employs and uses those men, their backgrounds, their style of writing. It's wonderful. And before scripture was written down, information, truth, historical accounts, and information handed down through parents were passed along verbally. Words that were passed on from generation to generation. But aren't you glad God wrote it down for us? He wrote it down on the pages of holy scripture. So we're not resting on dreams and visions and experiences. Now, somebody said, I wish we had the truth in black and white. You do have the truth in black and white. God gave us the truth in his holy word. It is literally the voice of God to us. Lemme give you some examples. Acts 28:25 is a beautiful expression the Bible says, "25 And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers," Then who does he say is speaking? The Holy Spirit was speaking. He was speaking through Isaiah, but Isaiah was simply the mouthpiece, if you will. But the word was the very word of God. How about this one? Peter chapter one, verse number 11 says, searching what or what manner of time the spirit of Christ, which was in them did signify when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ and the glory that should follow who was speaking through these prophets, the spirit of Christ. Which was in them. A Peter would use a similar expression in his second letter. In 2 Peter 1:21, read this "21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost." It was God speaking through the man. The truth was always, no matter what the means was, the truth was always given by the inspiration of God. That inspiration extends to the very words, not just the general ideas. God didn't just give us the big idea. He inspired the very words that were given. We believe that he inspired every word, not just some of them. The only thing in your Bible that's not inspired are the chapter and verse divisions. Chapter divisions were inserted by a man named Stephen Langston. Who died in about 1228, and the verse divisions were added in 1551. Now let me just pause and say I appreciate chapter in verse divisions because they ate in our study, but those divisions were not given by inspiration. What was given by the inspiration of God was the very words in the Word of God. Proofs of Scriptural Inspiration There's so many proofs to the inspiration of scripture. There are internal proofs. For example, think of the unity of the Bible. A book written over 1,600 years, by 40 different human penman in different languages on three continents covering 1,600 miles and yet perfect unity, no contradiction. You read its internal claims repeatedly, phrases like, "Thus saith the Lord," "God said," and "The word of the Lord came." Those kind of statements appear more than 2,000 times in the Bible. The word claims to be holy. It claims to be the Oracles of God. Think of how truthful and transparent the scripture is. There's not another book on earth where the author would speak so plainly about the great failings of men that a man, a human pen, when would write down his own sins. They're given by inspiration of God. It's more than the words of men, and there are only internal proofs. There are external proofs. It's powerful. No other book has literally transformed people's lives. I. Somebody said that where the Bible was best known, civilization rose to its highest levels. It's the first book in printing, the first book ever printed. It's the first in literature. No book has ever been translated intoes. It's the first in history, theology, prophecy, biography, and so many language laws. Why is that? Because it is the very word of the living God. The Eternal Truth of the Bible Did you know that the average life of a bestseller is about five years? That's all. And that 75% of all books go to the scrap heap within 90 days. Yet the Bible is still the bestselling book of all time. Why is that? Because truth is timeless. It is the eternal truth of the living God. It was Carlisle who said, no lie can live forever. Friend, the word of God is forever settled in heaven. It is indeed the word of the living God. God still alive and so is his word. And I want to challenge you today to spend some time meditating on God's word and realize that it is not simply the word of David, Paul, or Moses. This is the word of the living God. Ask the God of the word, the author who lives inside of you to use his book to speak to you today. Outro and Resources Repeating what other people have said about the Bible is not enough. Today's 4th chapter of Matthew contains the account of Jesus being tempted after being “led up by the Spirit into the wilderness” (ch. 4 v.1) This opening verse arrests the attention of diligent readers. It seems astonishing that God's Spirit brought about Christ's temptations. Jesus, now that “the Spirit of God” had come “to rest on him” [3 v.16] is first tempted to use that power to create “bread” [v.3] as there is no food in the wilderness to which the Spirit has led him, and 40 days had elapsed. He showed his power to create food later when he fed the 5,000; to feed himself would have been easy. The primary lesson that jumps into our thinking as we read the 3 different types of temptation is how Jesus quotes (in each case, in rejecting temptation) words which God caused Moses to write and which we find in his book called Deuteronomy. The temptations each have a sense of unreality about them, there is for example, no “very high mountain” from which a tempter could have “showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory” [v.8] They are examples of the 3 basic types of temptation which we read of a couple of weeks ago in 1 John 3 v.16 “For all that is in the world – the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of possessions – is not from the Father but is from the world.” How did Matthew in writing his gospel get the information about Christ's temptations? Jesus has not yet started to call any disciples to him; not until Ch. 9 v.9 is their reference to Matthew being called. As we think on this we realize the disciples could only have known about his temptations through Jesus telling them! And how did Jesus teach? Much of the time he taught by parables – and these were often not of literal events. So we conclude Jesus told of his temptations in the form of a parable, the primary aim being to show he too suffered temptation (see Heb, 4 v.15) and, even more, how temptations are overcome – that is the power of the narrative we read today. His mind was full of what God had caused to be written for human instruction. We especially noted his quotation to “the tempter” from Deut. 8 v.3, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” And that is the fundamental way in which we push fleshly temptations to one side. Is that not a primary reason why we read portions of God's word every day? How much of God's word comes to the surface in our thinking – when the need arises? It should do!
Happy New Year!!!! This year the devil will do everything he can to distract or keep you from taking daily time to be in the Word of God and to pray and commune with the Lord. I believe it was John Wesley who said the devil trembles when the weakest Christian gets on his knees! In the same way that we take time each day to eat, sleep and to exercise so that we can stay physically healthy, we must plan and take the time to “rest in Jesus” by reading and meditating in His Word, praying and exercising our spiritual gifts, if we are to grow strong and stay healthy spiritually! My wife Edith has created and developed beautiful daily Bible reading calendars that we have been using for years to keep us on track to read the Bible through from Genesis 1:1 to Revelation 22:21. Jesus said, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every Word that proceeds out of the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4). He was quoting from a verse in Deuteronomy 8:3. Paul instructed his “son in the faith”, Timothy, with these words in 2 Timothy 3:16-17: “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” “Every Word…. All Scripture”! The last time I checked, “every” still means every, and “all” still means all! I cannot emphasis enough the importance of reading or listening to every Word in the Bible this New Year! As you read or listen to the Bible daily you might think that you are not understanding or getting much out of it, but I assure you, It is getting a bunch of “dirty stuff” out of you! Jesus told His disciples in John 15:3: “Now you are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.” A strainer might not hold the water running through it, but it will be much cleaner after the water has run through it! The writer of the Book of Hebrews declared: “For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12). The Bible is a living Book, A living Word! Jesus said in John 6:63: “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.” Reading or listening to the Word of God daily is like turning on a light in this dark world in which we live, and it will keep you from stumbling, and also give you guidance for all the decisions that you make every day! Psalm 119:105: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” God's Word will bring joy into your heart as you read or listen to It. The prophet Jeremiah said, “Your words were found, and I ate them, And Your word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart; For I am called by Your name, O LORD God of hosts” (Jeremiah 15:16). It is no wonder that Job said, “But he knows the way that I take: when he has tried me, I shall come forth as gold. My foot has held his steps, his way have I kept, and not declined. Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food” (Job 23:10-12). In today's episode, we will dive into the devotional for day 87 of my journal Christ Transforms Me. This is a 90-day journal filled with daily devotionals, scripture, prayer, and gratitude. I first published this journal in January of 2022 when God had put it on my heart to create this journal. Throughout a year of praying, reflecting, and letting God and the Holy Spirit give me all the words, scriptures, and everything for this journal, I published it in January 2022. So each day for the next 3 days, I will post an episode on here going over this journal. Enjoy! Faith, Grace, Election, & Predestination - -----rahardin.com; Bio, Videos, RadioMy Books: Amazon.com/Richard-A-Hardin/e/B09J2YHCVB (Check them out! Approx-$5)Weekly: M-F, 7-8AM, Sat-Sun, 6-8AM (CST); Richard Hardin, POBox 45684, OKC, OK 73145;**Changes must start in the "House of God." Christianity must clean up its confused, mixed-up beliefs to be Ambassadors of God's Pure Word, for God will only back up His Pure Word, Proverbs 30:5-6, "Every Word of God is Pure: He is a shield unto them that put their trust in Him. (6) Add thou not unto His Words, lest He reprove thee, and thou be found a Liar!"****Teachings of faith and grace are filled with error and confusion. And, calvinism's (Reformed Theology) election and predestination is a lie of the devil to deny the work of Jesus on the cross. Ephesians 4:4 states that we should have one Spirit, one Body, one faith..." Mathew 25:41, Jesus states, "Then shall He (the King) say unto them on the left hand, 'Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels..." People go to hell and the lake of fire because they personally reject Jesus, not because God has predestined them to go to hell before their birth. And 1 Timothy 2:4, "Who (God) will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth." We must each make a personal choice to receive the Spirit of Jesus(Christ) into our hearts! And after we do we will be held accountable to our Lord and Savior to share with others about the great Grace He has paid for on the cross for each of us! The Apostle Paul says for us to not receive the Grace of God in vain, or don't keep it to ourself as a secret! Share with others and especially with each family member. Get each to share their changed heart salvation experience, don't just hope they are saved just because they are nice and go to church, that is deadly. on @KLRNRadio.com 7AM Tue #GPWF #Christian or rahardin.com (Pods)SPECIAL NOTICE:The Supreme Court Decision of the Church of Holy Trinity vs United States, Feb 29, 1892. We Must Seek God's Pure's Word/Will! -rahardin.com; Bio, Pods,Videos--Proverbs 30:5,6-"Every Word of God is pure: He is a shield unto them that put their trust in Him. Add thou not unto His Words, lest He reprove thee, and thou be found a liar." Books: Amazon.com/Richard-A-Hardin/e/B09J2YHCVB ----Wed - 7AM CST-- Are you seeking and hoping to find God's perfect will about some specific area of very important concern? Listen to how Abraham's chief servant found God's perfect will to find Abraham' son, Isaac, God's perfect wife. Neither Abraham or Isaac were involved in the search for his wife, yet Isaac received God's special choice for him to marry Rebekah. This story shows the servant's dedication to finding God's perfect will and woman for his master's son, Isaac. Wouldn't it be neat if we all knew that God had handpicked our mates before we got married? God does have a special calling on each of our lives, and that includes a special mate(helpmate) to help us fulfill His calling. If you are seeking a mate, job, or whatever special calling of service, set yourself to seek God's will daily where you are, and you will meet someone else seeking God's special calling for their life. The two of you will soon realize that the two of you can help each other with your callings.
