Proverbs 30:8-9 invites us to pray, “O God… give me neither poverty nor riches… lest I be full and deny you and say, “Who is the Lord?” or lest I be poor and steal and profane the name of my God.” Unfortunately, God's Old Testament people Israel fell prey to both temptations. In Deuteronomy chapters 8-10, Moses both reminds Israel that they “profane[d] the name of God” in their poverty during their wilderness years (not by stealing so much as by doubting and grumbling) while also warning them against “denying” God in their affluence once they enter the promised land. Sadly, we are still susceptible to these same struggles - profaning God's name in our poverty, and forgetting Him when we flourish. How do we remain “thankful in all circumstances” (1 Ths 5:18)? Moses's advice: “Don't forget where you came from”, and especially the One who has brought you thus far. Listen to this sermon and remember God's faithfulness!

In this continuation of the "Exodus" series, the sermon shifts focus to the "wilderness season." While the Book of Exodus spends 15 chapters on the exciting plagues and deliverance, it dedicates 100 chapters to the slow, difficult wandering in the wilderness. This reflects our spiritual reality: most of the Christian life is lived in the "in-between" time—after our deliverance but before the Promised Land. The manna sustained the Israelites perfectly—their feet didn't even swell from malnutrition (Deut 8:4). This points to Jesus: He is the complete and perfect sustenance for our souls.ConclusionThe wilderness is not a mistake; it is God's training ground. He brings us into places of lack not to punish us, but to strip away our pride and our false dependencies. God has not run out of mercy—not for you, not today.On Wednesday, February 18, we're in Deuteronomy 8—and it pairs perfectly with yesterday's warning in Haggai 1. Haggai confronts misplaced priorities. Deuteronomy 8 confronts what often creates them: prosperity.Moses is looking Israel in the eyes and saying, “You're about to walk into a good land—streams, harvest, abundance, stability… so don't forget the Lord.” Because the wilderness can break you, but comfort can erase you.And here's the detail that will mess with you: “Your clothing did not wear out… and your foot did not swell these forty years.” Forty years of walking—and God held their bodies together, their clothes together, their daily bread together. That's not a one-time miracle. That's daily mercy.This episode is a call to recognize what we tend to overlook: the miracles that feel “normal” because they're constant. Breath in your lungs. Strength to work. A mind that can think. A Savior who intercedes. The Spirit who dwells. Grace that keeps showing up.Deuteronomy 8 is God saying: I took care of you when you had nothing. Don't get comfortable and start acting like you did it when you have everything. Prosperity is a test—because it tempts you to trust the gift and forget the Giver.So here's today's challenge: write down the mercies you're in danger of forgetting. Name them. Remember them. Let memory turn into worship—before comfort turns into drifting.
