In this episode of the Truth From The Stand podcast, I'm joined by Brian Dombrowski—a guy who's put in more than his fair share of miles chasing deer across a range of terrain, from flatlands to big woods. We dive deep into what makes mature bucks tick, how scouting plays a role beyond trail cams, and why visual confirmation still trumps digital data. Brian shares his approach to patterning deer by behavior, not just sign, and we get into everything from the strategic use of mock scrapes to the rising cost of deer mounts and the real reason some guys just burn out. We also hit on the value of solitude, instinct, and pushing yourself past the easy button in both public and private land settings. This one's for the folks who are still grinding and still learning—season after season. WHAT TO EXPECT FROM PODCAST 440 Scouting and understanding deer movement Simple strategies often beat overcomplicated setups Property lines and public/private dynamics Mature bucks don't move like the rest Early scrapes, bedding shifts, and dominant does Hunting alone sharpens your instincts, but burnout is real SHOW NOTES AND LINKS: —Truth From The Stand Merch —Check out Tactacam Reveal cell cameras — Save 15% on Hawke Optics code TFTS15 —Save 20% on ASIO GEAR code TRUTH20 —Save on Lathrop And Sons non-typical insoles code TRUTH10 —Check out Faceoff E-Bikes —Waypoint TV Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode of Dropping Pins Derek talks to central Wisconsin native Brian Dombrowski. Brian has been a serious big buck killer for a long time and spends a considerable amount of time scouting and learning the public lands of WI, as well as a few other states. Brian has killed and hunted some truly remarkable animals in different states. We dive right into some great scouting conversations and how Brian has been logging time in this post season period to locate some familiar bucks he has been after. We discuss an area where Brian has been consistently getting on some of the biggest antlered bucks his area has to offer. We talk about what types of habitat the mature bucks like to use and what time of year they are using it. Brian dives into an epic story that has been unfolding for the past 4 years, with multiple encounters with a true giant marsh buck. We dive into details of his setups, and how bucks used the terrain and wind to their advantage. Brian may have found his ghost buck yet again this post season after locating some tal rubs that had this bucks signature all over them. Overall, Brian sheds light on his scouting practices and what has helped him located and hunt some of the most mature bucks on the public lands he hunts. Surely, Brian will be a guest that we speak to again. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
The guys dive into Brian's season which started out in North Dakota, the trials and tribulations of targeting a big buck out there, the heartbreak he experienced learning a state that he knows he may not return to, how social media may be numbing us as hunters and taking the spark out of hunting, how he got his spark back after shooting a nice buck with his bow, a close-quarters opening day gun hunt, and how going with the flow of the woods led him to harvesting an awesome buck with his muzzleloader. The guys also talk about whether or not this deer season was weird like everyone has been saying, historical trail camera data, the impact of changing barometric pressure from hurricanes on deer, and the importance of learning with every hunt, and sharing knowledge with other hunters. In this episode, I share what I am doing to get ready for October 1 and pull from the Dojo vault all the way back to Ep. 1 with Brian Dombrowski. Brian breaks down how hunters can use rubs to increase their chances of success, especially for those new to hunting. He emphasizes understanding a buck's home range and how to use rub lines to identify high-traffic areas and staging zones. Brian shares practical advice on interpreting deer sign, tracking rub lines, and developing a strategic game plan. He encourages hunters to be adventurous, let the sign guide their approach, and not overcomplicate the process. His insights offer actionable tips for both beginner and experienced hunters alike. Bullet Points: Learn how to use rubs to understand a buck's home range and patterns Tips for tracking rub lines to find staging areas and high-traffic spots Importance of being inquisitive and adventurous in the woods when reading sign Hashtags: #BuckRubs #DeerHunting #MobileHunting #WhitetailHunting #PublicLandHunting #BowHunting #HuntingStrategy #DeerScouting #OutdoorAdventure
We talk about deer sign a lot. Tracks, rubs, scrapes, beds, and food sources all make sense when we think about them individually, but taking a step back to look at the big picture is something most of us don't do often enough. Luckily, there are people out there like Brian Dombrowski who can help us break things down! This week, Pierce & Brian start what was originally intended to be a woodsmanship podcast, and it is, at times... but that seems too limiting for the conversation the guys had. In this episode, the guys dive into scouting, understanding food sources, reading tacks and rubs, going with "the flow" of the woods, not wasting time playing safe in the early season, and at the end of it all, just keeping things simple. It's a conversation that should hopefully give you reason to pause, zoom out, and think about this upcoming season a little differently. Enjoy! Learn more about your ad choices. Though it's hot and buggy, the summer is a great time to get boots on the the ground for some deer scouting. The woods are thick and green, but there is still much that can be discerned this time of year, such as preferred bedding, food sources that will be prime come opening day of deer season, and what bucks are hanging around the areas you hunt. One guy that scouts hard during the summer and has a solid strategy for hanging trail cameras is Brian Dombrowski of Wisconsin. In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Brian about Brian's summer scouting and trail cam strategy and what Brian does to consistently get on big publi land bucks. In this episode of the DIY Sportsman podcast, Garrett sits down with Brian Dombrowski of Wisconsin, who he originally met while hunting public land on an out-of-state trip. Brian hunts many different habitat types but really enjoys tackling bigger parcels or timber or marshland, where he's been able to take several nice deer over the years. His methods and descriptions of hunting marshes differ a bit from the typical media we here describing them. In addition to talking about Brian's year round process and using in-season scouting to hone in on a particular area, we also do two hunt breakdowns... one for an old central WI buck taken this year, and another for a giant out-of-state buck that Brian shot in early September.
