Season 6, Episode 715:  **A Marine's Unconventional Path to Charity Work** When Conzo left the U.S. Marines, he never imagined his next chapter would involve OnlyFans, a UK dating show appearance, and becoming an accidental meme. (Ladbible apparently loves using his image as clickbait for completely unrelated stories.) This former Marine now uses adult content creation to fund animal rescue, LGBTQ youth support, and domestic abuse survivor assistance—all while challenging society's discomfort with sexuality and nudity. Links: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/conzo0311 LADbible: https://www.ladbible.com/entertainment/tv/naked-attraction-contestants-where-are-they-now-connor-conzo-tiktok-777527-20230920 Daily Star: https://www.dailystar.co.uk/tv/marine-who-starred-naked-attraction-32726872 After discovering financial mismanagement at a horse rehabilitation charity in Scotland where he served as vice chairperson, Conzo faced a moral crossroads. The animals needed immediate help. His solution? **OnlyFans became his fundraising platform**, despite initial hesitation about the unconventional approach. Beyond the fundraising aspect, he found the work personally transformative and healing, helping him process past trauma and discover his sexuality. Why does sex work carry such stigma when it's simply labor performed by people—often parents with special needs children, disabled individuals, or neurodivergent people—who struggle in traditional employment without adequate state support? Conzo argues that opposition stems from control rather than genuine welfare concerns, noting how society suddenly found moral outrage when women started controlling their own earnings on platforms like OnlyFans. Ready to hear more about redefining masculinity, navigating stigma, and finding purpose through unconventional means? This conversation goes deep. Key Takeaways:  • **Sex work as trauma healing**: Conzo describes his OnlyFans work as genuinely transformative for processing military trauma, challenging the assumption that sex work is inherently exploitative or damaging to the performer. • **Diverse sex worker demographics**: A significant portion of sex workers are parents, disabled individuals, and neurodivergent people using it out of economic necessity due to inadequate state support—not a fringe phenomenon. • **Decriminalization as harm reduction**: Conzo argues that criminalizing sex work increases danger and exploitation, suggesting legalization protects workers better than moral crusades framed around "rescue" narratives. British Columbia's drug decriminalization pilot program will end on January 31st. The controversial program was introduced in 2023, but was criticized by advocates and political opponents alike. Parts of the policy had already been rolled back as public pressure mounted. The pilot's cancellation was met with disappointment, especially from First Nations leaders, over the lack of consultation. What does the ending of this policy signal about the B.C. government's approach to the toxic drug crisis? And what does it mean for Canadians living with addictions?Andrea Woo, the Globe's staff reporter covering health and drug policy, gives us a retrospective on what exactly B.C.'s pilot was trying to fix, whether that worked, and what comes next as decriminalization ends in the province.Questions? B.C. Health Minister Josie Osborne has announced the province won't extend its drug decriminalization pilot, which ends on January 31. We ask listeners how they feel about the end of decriminalization in B.C and how the province should help people struggling with addiction. Lawless: The complete decriminalization of abortion… only in Canada

In our season nine premiere, we welcome Martha Paynter, nurse, scholar and author of Lawless: Abortion Under Complete Decriminalization. We discuss Canada's complete decriminalization of abortion (the only country to do so), the fascinating and often fraught history that brought us to this point, abortion as a public good, the influence of the anti-choice lobby here and the overturning of Roe vs. Wade in the US, and what it takes to make abortion truly equitable when decriminalization is not enough.  Reflecting on the need to understand abortion as a public good, Paynter says: “We have these major cultural forces that just reiterate this idea that abortion is rare and hard. And it's not, it's very normal. It's very common and it takes seven minutes. And actually it will allow you to follow your dreams. Whether that dream is to escape a violent relationship or to finish your graduate degree or whatever. So we do need to have this shift in the way we talk about abortion. And we need to understand abortion, not just as healthcare, but as this force of good in our society.” About today's guest:  Dr. Martha Paynter has worked to advance abortion access in Canada for over 20 years. A writer, nurse and public scholar, she is recognized internationally for her expertise at the nexus of reproductive justice and prisoner health. She is an associate professor at the University of New Brunswick Faculty of Nursing, where her research addresses the health rights of people experiencing incarceration and sexual and reproductive health care in Canada and around the world. She is the author of Abortion to Abolition: Reproductive Health and Justice in Canada (Fernwood, 2017) and has published extensively in national magazines (Chatelaine, Briarpatch) and scientific journals. Paynter is a keen advocate for increasing the influence of women and gender diverse people in news media and participates regularly in interviews with national and international print, radio and TV press (CBC/Radio-Canada, Global, CTV). She values and fosters collaborations with community organizations and lived experience experts in reproductive health and prison justice. Paynter is a recipient of the 150th anniversary medal from the Senate of Canada for her volunteer service to the country (2017) and the King Charles III Coronation Medal for service to the nursing profession (2025).        Paynter's latest book, Lawless: Abortion Under Complete Decriminalization is being released this month by Fernwood Publishing.                                                    Transcript of this episode can be accessed at georgebrown.ca/TommyDouglasInstitute. B.C. is in the midst of an ongoing public health emergency, declared in 2016 in response to significant levels of overdoses and drug poisonings. In response, BC implemented a decriminalization framework in 2023, removing criminal sanctions for possession of small amounts of certain unregulated drugs. Less than 18 months later, B.C. amended the framework, effectively re-criminalizing public drug consumption and possession in public spaces across B.C. A commentary published in the Canadian Journal of Public Health assesses this amendment through a public health lens. We speak with Kelsey Speed, one of the co-authors of the commentary.

Healing is often presented as a straightforward path: visit the doctor, take the prescribed medication, follow the treatment plan. But what if true healing is far more complex—deeply rooted in both the mind and body?In this episode, I sit down with Payton Nyquvest, founder and CEO of Numinus, to explore the intersection of psychedelic therapy, trauma healing, and the ancient wisdom that modern medicine often overlooks. We'll discuss how psychedelics influence neuroplasticity and memory processing, why they are not a shortcut to healing but rather a tool for deeper self-awareness, and the crucial distinction between therapeutic and recreational use. Payton also breaks down the mechanisms behind trauma storage in the body and how intentional psychedelic-assisted therapy may help unlock profound healing. As a leader in the integration of psychedelics into healthcare, Payton brings a grounded, evidence-based perspective to a topic that is often misunderstood. This episode was recorded live at the Plant Medicine Cafe in Denver, CO – which served as an unofficial Prop 122 headquarters – and cohosted by Meaghan Len, co-founder of the U.S.' first ayahuasca church, Sanctuary of the Sovereign Heart. They dive into the details of Prop 122 and discuss why it's the most freeing legislation we've seen, but also very complicated in the clash between an expensive regulated side and a risky and ambiguous decrim side. While the implementation process continues, they've learned that there is still a huge need for public education, and that one of the most important tasks now is to be hyper aware of how legislators will try to change what people already agreed on. They discuss: The Federal vs. state legality issues we still see even after such sweeping legislation The huge gap in understanding why Indigenous communities are upset and why they need to be included in all discussions The Religious Freedom Restoration Act and the complications of religion when many of us simply feel spiritual The natural vs. synthetic fallacy and the future of churches offering a synthetic sacrament The ontological shock many have after a big experience and why churches and community are needed to help guide people and more!  For links, head to the show notes page.
