This week we're revisiting a story from our series Mixed: Stories of Mixed-Race Californians. It originally aired in March 2023. Even if he's not always recognized as part of the Asian American community, Oakland-born rapper Guap is fiercely proud of his Filipino roots. On the last track of his 2021 album, 1176, he tells an origin story spanning decades and continents. His grandfather, a Black merchant marine stationed in Subic Bay in the Philippines, ripped the pocket of his uniform. He knew he'd be in big trouble if he didn't fix it, so he found a young Filipina seamstress to repair the pocket — and fell in love. When his time in Subic Bay came to an end, the two married and moved to a one-story house in West Oakland, where they would eventually raise their grandchild Guap, the first-born child of their youngest daughter. Sasha Khokha and Marisa Lagos spoke to Guap about growing up Black and Filipino, the cultural impact his lola had on him, and how his mixed identity shows up in his music.

The founders of GUAP, Ibrahim Kamara and Jide Adetunji are in the building to spill the tea on all things GUAP. We say this every episode, but we want to hear from you and we mean it! Creating a media ecosystem that is diverse and inclusive makes strategic sense for all stakeholders, nurturing meaningful media experiences to effectively engage people. Yet there is historic under investment in the industry in Black and Minority-owned businesses. According to a report from Google, in the UK start-up founders do not have equal access to funding. In 2020, less than 0.25% of venture capital funding went to Black-led startups in the UK and only 38 Black founders received venture capital funding in the last 10 years. In the US, it's the same picture. Start-ups with at least one Black founder received 1.9% of deal counts and 1.2% of overall venture dollars invested in the U.S. so far this year, report Crunchbase. “The rising tide lifts all the boats,” says Gerald Appau-Bonsu, founder of Havas Boost, who joins host Ben Downing, Global Managing Director, Ethical Media & Strategic Partnerships, Havas Media Group in the studio to share how his lived experience was the genesis for Havas Boost, a new program supporting businesses from under-represented communities. This passionate conversation explores the role of Havas Boost to help provide investment and meaningful support to emerging media start-ups to bring about effective change to the media ecosystem. The queen herself and the Carpool's most iconic guest, Car Grandma Kris, returns for a family-packed episode with Kelly and Lizz. ‘Guap' — not guac — is today's millennial word of the day. And while Kelly and Lizz don't need to be ‘coutin' their guap,' at least they now know Gen Zers are talking about their cash-money, not an add-on to their Chipotle bowl. A love and wisdom-filled Q&A with today's guest brings you all the secrets to life, love, and aging in reverse. Kris shares where you can find the fountain of youth on your local Trader Joe's shelves and names one of her favorite products for achieving a little glow every day. Kelly and Lizz also ask their mom about her current ride, how she met their dad, and how she juggled raising five kids along with the rest of life. You won't want to miss her sage parenting, marriage, and holiday planning advice. The Car Grandma also joins Kelly and Lizz for a special taste drive of Mom Water. Mom Water sponsors today's test drive, sending over their iconic, fun, and refreshing drinks for the gals to sip (and spit, in Kelly's case). Not only is Mom Water a fantastic non-carbonated seltzer alternative, their cans are also stunning, and their ingredients are super simple. Each flavor has a cute and classic mom name like Linda, Karen, Sandy, or Carol. In short, the gals are hooked. Grab your Mom Water merch with our 20% off code CARMOM20 and Follow Mom Water on Instagram at @drinkmomwater. A leaked video of the Honda Pilot — that has now been scrubbed from the internet — headlines today's industry news while deer crashes are up 16% with the daylight savings time change and dealership pushback on Ford EV mandates. @brunchwithbabs brings us today's ditch the drive-through: dump and bake pizza casserole. For all those on the come up, this is your episode! One thing we practice to preach is always showing the world that there's a voice out there to let you know to never stop! Today's voice comes from Atlanta's & BBE/YFGB's own YTizzle! Tizzle's story is an story for the underdogs who been through it all, or even just coming out. While his little brother Guap Tarentino & cousin/superstar Future lived their run on the Summer Sixteen tour with Drake, YTizzle was serving his time. Once he came home, his run began immaculately, all while independent with support from Guap. YTizzle's time is raring to come, especially with Wockstar getting ready in the cup! Make sure y'all tune in to this
