For a hundred years, parents attempting to undertake creative endeavours have had a ready-made excuse, courtesy of Cyril Connolly: “The enemy of art is the pram in the hall.”Kids, the thinking goes, are where creativity goes to die. But Austin Kleon thinks Connolly got it exactly backwards. This month on the podcast, I sat down with Austin—author of the New York Times bestselling trilogy Steal Like an Artist, Show Your Work and Keep Going—to talk about his new book, Don't Call It Art: 10 Ways to Create Like a Kid Again. This book is a love letter to his two sons, and a collection of everything they taught him about creativity.Austin spent his career helping people tap into their creative potential, Then his kids arrived, and he realised he wasn't the teacher anymore. He was, in his words, “the apprentice to the beginners,” the studio assistant in his own home, saving the drawings, keeping the paper trail, and watching two small artists figure out how to “let it rip.”We talk about why children aren't an obstacle to your creative life but an opportunity for it to grow, the gentle art of benevolent neglect, and how watching your kids create might be the best way to quiet your own inner critic—and re-parent the artist you used to be.Subscribe to the Podcast* Spotify* Apple Podcasts* YouTube* Pocket CastsWhere to Find Austin Kleon* Buy Don't Call it Art* Read his blog, especially the parenting tag* Subscribe to his newsletter* Follow him on InstagramEpisode ReferencesBooks & Essays* The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything by Sir Ken Robinson* The Idle Parent Manifesto by Tom Hodgkinson* Bringing Up Bebe by Pamela Druckerman* Several Short Sentences About Writing by Verlyn Klinkenborg* 100 Essays I Don't Have Time To Write by Sarah Ruhl* The Argonauts by Maggie Nelson* Hold Still: A Memoir with Photographs by Sally Mann* Playing With My Son by Andy Baio* Heidi's Horse by Sylvia Fein* American Elf by James KochalkaFeatured Artists, Musicians & Innovators* John Baldessari – The legendary conceptual artist whose revolutionary “Post-Studio Art” teaching style shaped a generation of creators.* Creative Growth: Childhood to Maturity at MoMA – The historic 1939 solo exhibition tracking artist Dahlov Ipcar's development from a young child to an adult.* Lynda Barry – The MacArthur-winning cartoonist, author of What It Is, and professor of interdisciplinary creativity.* Ruth Asawa – The brilliant San Francisco wire sculptor who believed art education should be accessible to all children.* Eleanor Coppola – The visionary documentary filmmaker who beautifully balanced her own creative life alongside an iconic filmmaking family.* Brian Eno – The experimental ambient music pioneer whose philosophy centers on answering the ultimate creative question: “What is it that I actually like?”* Michel de Montaigne – The Renaissance essayist whose father instituted a spartan pedagogical plan, including raises with peasants and learning Latin as a first language.Misc* Cyril Connolly's “Pram in the Hall”* Jeff Tweedy on Making Art without ControlTimestamps03:10 — Pre-publication anxiety and “the gulp”: Austin's advice for a first-time author05:03 — Why a second book is like a second child06:04 — Austin's family: Megan, two boys, and a houseful of weirdos in Austin, Texas07:12 — A love letter to his kids: bottling the energy of two “cavemen Picassos”09:55 — Growing up in rural Ohio: pigs, county fairs, and a broad definition of creative work12:10 — Ken Robinson's “I'm drawing a picture of God” story13:29 — Puberty and the arrival of the inner critic14:31 — Milton Glaser's perfect combination: a mother who says “you can do anything,” a father who says “prove it”16:11 — Parenting tension as a guitar string: freedom, constraint, and Bringing Up Bébé18:50 — The story of how Owen held his pen—and the magic line that disappeared22:31 — Benevolent neglect: D.H. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for May 27, 2026 is: benevolent buh-NEV-uh-lunt adjective Benevolent can describe someone or something that is kind and generous or something that is organized for the purpose of doing good. // The event's reception was courtesy of a benevolent donor who's chosen to remain anonymous. // They belong to several benevolent societies and charitable organizations. See the entry > Examples: "The Community Service Award is presented at the local, state and national levels to individuals and groups who have made outstanding voluntary, civil, heroic or benevolent contributions to their communities." — Devin Weeks, The Coeur d'Alene (Idaho) Press, 24 Dec. 2025 Did you know? One who is benevolent genuinely wishes other people well, a meaning reflected clearly in the word's Latin roots: benevolent comes from bene, meaning "good," and velle, meaning "to wish." Other descendants of velle in English include volition, which refers to the power to make one's own choices or decisions, and voluntary, as well as the rare velleity, meaning either "the lowest degree of volition" or "a slight wish or tendency." A more familiar velle descendant stands directly opposed to benevolent: malevolent describes someone or something having or showing a desire to cause harm to another person.

Greetings Glocal Citizens! This week we commemorate Africa Day across the African Diaspora. Reflecting on the journeys of liberation that Black people have endured in trial and triumph, I am ever reminded that those that laid the groundwork will never in my heart, mind or acts have done so in vain. As the pillars of imperialism are finally weakening--though, not without reverting to its tried and tested battle techniques--the new next is taking shape in all manner of action and practice across the globe. So today, as I do in some way every day, I salute us all for staying the course and redirecting the path as necessary on the #PanAfricanProgress mission that is imparative to human evolution and a sustainable existence here on earth. Speaking of existence here on earth and the ways that we inhabit it, I came across my guest this week via a connection that I made last year at the Charter Cities Summit in Nairobi. Remi Adeleke, a former U.S. Navy SEAL and entrepreneur, serves as Chairman and Co-Founder of the Small Farm Cities Africa Resilience Fund, a for-profit venture developing sustainable, agricultural communities to combat poverty and human trafficking. He is actively scaling this model across Africa, including projects in Malawi, Zambia, and other regions, focusing on economic empowerment through infrastructure and land ownership for local farmers. Following a successful career as a Navy SEAL, in 2016 he found himself pursuing a careers in writing, speaking, and acting, including the 2017 franchise film Transformers: The Last Knight, SEAL Team CBS, and the 2022 Universal thriller Ambulance. He served as a consultant on Netflix's 6 Underground and Apple+ TV series Invasion. As an educator he co-founded Muskegon Michigan's OPS Academy which opened to inner city students K-8th grade in Fall of 2022. His story is captured in his HarperCollins bestselling autobiography, Transformed: A Navy SEALs Unlikely Journey From The Throne Of Africa, To The Streets Of The Bronx, To Defying All Odds. As you'll hear in our conversation, Remi is also the founder of Kejo Wear a brand changing negativity to positivity one shirt at a time and where he is marrying this social entrepreneurial enterprises with activism; a portion of proceeds go toward supporting efforts to end human trafficking. Guest artist HAROUN HAYWARD joins JILLIAN KNIPE to discuss his work via 'The Sea The Sea' by Iris Murdoch. Winner of the prestigious Booker Prize, it was first published in 1978 by Chatto & Windus, and most recently by Vintage Classics as part of Penguin Books. The chaotic story centres around Charles Arrowby, a director, actor and playwright who has retired from his highly glamorous London life to become something of a hermit in a near isolated house by the sea. Just like in slapstick theatre he bumps up against a myriad of characters, including his buddhist cousin James, his childhood sweetheart Mary Hartley Fitch, ex lover Lizzie Scherer whose life he destabilises once again, and Lizzie's ex lover before Charles - Peregrine Arbelow, the Irish drunk. This podcast episode features a profound discussion on the intersection of mental health and missions, underscoring the critical importance of understanding and addressing the mental health challenges faced by missionaries. We are joined by the esteemed Katie Walker, a PhD candidate specializing in counseling psychology, who shares her insights on the unique emotional demands encountered in missionary work. Throughout our conversation, we explore the significance of fostering resilience and the role of supportive relationships, particularly the impact of maintaining connections with friends and family back home. Katie emphasizes the necessity of intentional practices, such as therapy and self-reflection, to cultivate mental well-being in high-stress environments. Ultimately, this episode aims to equip listeners with actionable strategies to promote mental health awareness and support within their own spheres of influence.Takeaways: In an increasingly chaotic world, it is vital for leaders to cultivate intentional quietude to maintain clarity in their ministry and personal lives. The concept of mental health among missionaries highlights the unique emotional challenges they face, necessitating targeted support systems. Research indicates that maintaining connections with friends and family back home can significantly bolster the mental resilience of missionaries. The 'pedestal effect' illustrates the psychological impact on missionaries when they transition from being viewed as leaders to experiencing mundane life back home. Effective communication about mental health within missionary teams fosters an environment of safety and openness, enabling individuals to seek help without fear of stigma. Benevolent detachment allows caregivers to support others without compromising their own mental health, emphasizing the importance of self-care in service roles.

The Aliens called... they want us to wake up..In this episode of the F.A.T.E. Podcast, I sit down with Chris Berryman, a psychic medium who channeled beings from The Orion star system during COVID. This led to something extraordinary — a series of channeled messages known as The N1 Sessions: Seasonal Reflections from the Outer Dimensions of Light.During deep meditative states, Chris began receiving communications from what he describes as the Orion Collective, a group of advanced extraterrestrial intelligences led by an entity known as N1. The messages that followed weren't predictions or prophecies — they were something far more profound.According to these transmissions, humanity has been living inside layers of programming designed to keep us distracted, divided, and disconnected from the true power that exists within every one of us.The Orion Collective claims that:• Humanity is far more powerful than we've been led to believe• Hidden forces have manipulated our systems for centuries• Fear, conflict, and division are tools used to keep human consciousness suppressed• Environmental degradation, technological interference, and constant distraction are part of a larger control structure• Benevolent civilizations across the cosmos are watching and encouraging humanity to awakenAt its core, The N1 Sessions reads like a cosmic message — even a love letter to humanity — urging us to reclaim our sovereignty, question what we've been taught, and rediscover the deeper connection that unites all consciousness. Are we part of a much larger intergalactic family?Have we been conditioned to forget who we really are?And what happens if humanity finally wakes up?This conversation explores alien contact, consciousness, awakening, and the possibility that the answers we seek may not come from the outside — but from within.Welcome to your F.A.T.E.BUY HIS BOOK: AMAZONhttps://a.co/d/096iaRSe******SUPPORT THE SHOW*** BUY MY BOOK****** BOOK BABY: - *Preferred method* Higher residual here.https://store.bookbaby.com/book/mr-pickles-and-maggie AMAZON: Mr. Pickles & Maggie: A "Tail" of True Friendship: Busby, Christy: 9781667811918: Amazon.com: Books https://a.co/d/bsLFPn6* *************LEAVE A RATING**** FOR THE SHOW******* Please leave a RATING or REVIEW (on your podcast listening platform) or Subscribe to my YouTube Channel. We are made for mutual gaze and this fundamental human need points toward something deeper: a God who gazes upon us with love before we get anything right or wrong. To be truly seen by another, and to truly see them, is not merely a social act but a spiritual one, a tangible making-present of divine love in the world.

Deep in the Yorkshire woods, multi-disciplinary artist and producer Jamie House – aka Hamie Jouse – has been quietly splitting light into a thousand tiny rainbows. Best known for his hypnotic visual installations and art direction across DIY music spaces from Old Red Bus Station to Resonance, House found himself at last year's Watching Trees festival doing something beautifully meta: filming daytime trees to project back onto their evening counterparts through a cascade of prisms. The “arty bullshit” behind it, as he puts it, was about bridging gaps of time and space and memory – creating past tense ghosts of daylight. But really, “it just looked pretty, and the trees and sun had it all covered.” Whilst setting up his spectral light show on the Bush of Ghosts stage, Tia and Wil (that's us) caught wind of the music he was playing. What unfolded in those early morning hours was something special – patient, ambient-soundscapes with a deep understanding of the fractal nature of the forest, where every process is made up of countless sub-processes doing their best impression of one solid bit. This mix captures that philosophy; energised yet gently held, pulsing yet ambient. Mirroring both the slow, steady rhythm of plant growth and the constant, quick reactions within the cells. There are rarely right angles in the forest, just lots of individual leaves doing their thing- a benevolent collusion with the kodama, those forest sprites that House channelled through his psychogeographic, hauntological light work. From the Rhubarb Triangle of West Yorkshire, where he dabbles in ambient matters with his long time friend Aaron during hazy Sunday afternoon straggler zones, overlooking different vistas, House has created something that feels like plugging into the mainframe with beings deep in the woods, under a very full moon. Always bring a memory stick, indeed. GFL Station releases daily videos on YouTube allegedly received from multiple extraterrestrials communicating with up to 10 human channelers including the channel's founder, David Nichols, a self-described Canadian mystic. The daily videos, often numbering two, use voice-over-artists, to create soothing, inspiring messages that have led to the rapid growth of GFL Station, which is about to surpass 150,000 subscribers. GFL Station's rapid growth greatly impressed Byron Belitsos—a publisher, editor, or co-author of numerous books dealing with Extraterrestrial Contact—who decided to write a Special Report on GFL Station which he titled: “Reading the Signs of Benevolent ET.” In his second Exopolitics Today interview, Belitsos presents the key perspectives and information presented by GFL Station, which he discusses in his 21-page report. He and Dr. Michael Salla discuss their respective personal experiences which help explain the rapid growth in GFL Station. They share how the positive energies in the channeled communications have an uplifting and healing effect, which resonates with them and many listeners, and also matches their respective decades of exopolitics and exotheology research. Let me ask you, how can we easily help others? As we go, we get fixed, but how does that work? Keep failing, falling forward, keep struggling, but with God at our side, learning and growing. In this verse, “Be still, and know that I Am God!” Is the answer. Thank you Gods blessings.

Following the untimely passing of firefighter Joe Crosse, a group of friends and colleagues has set up the Joe Crosse Benevolent Fund to support his family, particularly his children's future education. Inspired by the generosity of the community and guidance from Deirdre Foran — who faced a similar loss — the fund aims to provide long-term support for Joe's family, with donations invested to grow over time. So far, the initiative has received strong backing from local businesses, contractors, and individuals wishing to honour Joe's legacy of goodwill. On Friday's Morning Focus, Alan Morrissey spoke with Brian McMahon, firefighter based in Ennistymon fire station and was a friend and colleague of the late Joe Crosse and Deirdre Foran, who lost her late husband, Ollie due to a sudden death, almost 21 years ago. Can the promise of economic progress ever justify conquest, coercion, and control over other people's lives? Economist William Easterly joins EconTalk's Russ Roberts to argue no--and to rethink what "development" really means in theory, in history, and in our politics today. Drawing on his new book, Violent Saviors: The West's Conquest of the Rest, Easterly explores how colonial powers and later regimes like the Soviet Union claimed to increase people's material well-being while stripping them of freedom, dignity, and any say in their own fate. Russ and Easterly dig into the idea of agency--the ability of people to choose for themselves--through the lens of Adam Smith, John Stuart Mill, Kant, Frederick Douglass, and modern debates over foreign aid, autocrats, and technocratic "solutions" imposed from afar.

Kass and Mike Lazerow who are serial entrepreneurs, seasoned investors, and co-authors of Shoveling Sh!t: A Love Story About the Entrepreneur's Messy Path to Success joined me for one of the most honest conversations I've had about what it really takes to build companies and build a life. They share the unvarnished truth about their journey: surviving the dot-com crash, buying Golf.com back from bankruptcy, founding and scaling Buddy Media (eventually acquired by Salesforce for $745 million), and raising three kids while raising capital. They talk about the choices that shaped them, including why they walked away from a bigger offer from Google and how radical transparency kept their team committed during a three-month period when they couldn't make payroll. We also dive into the patterns they see in the 100+ startups they've backed like how ego, secrecy, and shiny-object syndrome derail founders along with the essential habits that help leaders stay grounded. And because they work together and live together, they open up about how they divide responsibilities, handle stress, and stay connected through exits, pivots, health scares, and everything in between. Their upcoming book distills 50 hard-earned lessons about leadership, resilience, and building a life that actually works. Send us a textWhat if most of the economy can be automated without anything we'd call real general intelligence? That provocative idea launches a candid tour with Ben Goertzel through the difference between LLM “breadth” and the kind of generalization that marks true AGI. We unpack why today's models are powerful yet limited, how they'll reshape work in the near term, and what ingredients are missing for systems that reason, invent, and move beyond the data that formed them.We dig into a practical path forward: blending deep neural networks with logic engines, evolutionary learning, and a massive knowledge graph so each part amplifies the others. Ben shares how the Hyperon framework and the ASI chain bring AI on-chain, not just coordinated by it. That means a new AGI language, MeTTa, serving as a smart contract language, enabling formal verification, rich composability, and an integrated reputation layer. Together, these tools aim to embed trust into the stack while opening the door to decentralized AI networks that resist capture by any single company or state.Culture, narrative, and emotion matter just as much as code. A robot-led band nearly got booed off stage until the performance was reframed as exploration, not replacement—proof that context shapes how people accept new tools. We follow that thread into creativity, where AI can mix stems, spark ideas, and widen access for musicians, even as some roles compress. The larger question becomes not whether AI can do the job, but what humans will choose to do for meaning, connection, and joy. Along the way, we weigh openness versus control through a proactionary lens and point you to resources to explore decentralized, trustworthy AI.If this conversation challenged your assumptions or sparked new ones, follow the show, share it with a friend, and leave a quick review to help others find it. Your thoughts shape where we go next—what part of decentralized AGI are you most curious about? This episode was recorded at Web Summit in Lisbon on November 13, 2025.
