While it’s true that numbers and math don’t care about your gender, numbers and math are hardly the driving force behind personal finances. Instead, outside cultural influences often affect our financial situations more than we’d like to admit. In this episode, Chase and Katie sit down with Brynne Conroy for a discussion on the poverty cycle, the cultural influences that affect an individual's earning potential, as well as their ability to save, and the importance of breaking stigmas around social programs.About BrynneBrynne Conroy is the owner, creator and content director of the Femme Frugality blog. In October 2018, Conroy published The Feminist Financial Handbook, which quickly went on to become a #1 Amazon new release. In The Feminist Financial Handbook, Conroy takes a deep dive into how discrimination and oppression affect an individual or family's personal finance and the steps people can take to overcome the hurdles in front of them.About the ShowComments, questions or suggestions for the show? Today we’re into how you can shift into your debt-free journey with one question! Dump Debt Together It’s on! All this week the Mamas Talk Money Summit is hosting sessions about family finances, investing, career, and kids. My session was out Monday night – Dump Debt Together (When You Can’t Agree How). I had a fantastic time! While the session was on, I was live in the chat speaking and answering questions about how to get your spouse on board with knocking out this debt. People had some wonderful questions and were kind enough to share their biggest money challenges. We got into creating a budget when one spouse has irregular income, secrete debts, and conversation starters for those initial chats about money. But I’m not the speaker in this event. There are about 40 amazing mama speakers that are a part of the summit and their sessions cover not only the ‘essential’ goals like paying off debt, saving, and investing but also topics they may not have as much exposure or have accessible resources. Brynne Conroy is one of the speakers. She’s going to be this Friday as part of the kids and money sessions. I’ve had her on the podcast when she released her book, The Feminist Financial Handbook. She’s also the creator of Personal Finance By Women. Her session is Managing Your Finances With a Special Needs Child. In this episode we’ll look at: Why Brynne’s session is needed One activity you can do to get your spouse on board with becoming debt-free Hope you enjoy! Brynne has one child with special needs. How does this change the way she does her financial planning and investing? In general, her plan is to “save everything”. But even doing that, Brynne says she does not “max out my retirement accounts to a point where I feel that an ABLE account or a Special Needs Trust is necessary or necessarily financially viable.” ABLE stands for “Achieving a Better Life Experience Act”, which are tax-advantaged savings accounts for individuals with disabilities and their families Listen in as Brynne explains how ABLE accounts work, how someone would benefit from having an ABLE account, and how she’s working to live a beautiful life within the choices and parameters available to her. While the fundamentals of money are the same for all of us, our experiences, risks and concerns are all unique. In that way, queer money is different from straight money. And within the LGBT community, the degree of struggle varies. Our experience as cis, white, gay men is different from that of a transgender individual who may find it challenging to open a bank account because they don’t look like the picture on their driver’s license. So, what can we learn from listening to their stories? Brynne Conroy is a personal finance writer who started covering money when she didn’t have any. As she discovered ways to save and earn more, Brynne shared them on her blog, Femme Frugality. In October of 2018, she published the Amazon bestseller The Feminist Financial Handbook: A Modern Woman’s Guide to a Wealthy Life. One of the women featured in Brynne’s book is Nicole Lynn Perry, a transgender veteran and rainbow community advocate based in Seattle. Today, Brynne and Nicole join us to discuss The Feminist Financial Handbook. Brynne explains what drew her to Nicole’s story and why she chose to include it in the book, and Nicole shares her background serving in the US Marine Corps before transitioning and eventually becoming an activist for the queer community in general and transgender service members specifically. Nicole also explains what life is like for a transgender person in the US, describing the challenges around changing your name and gender marker and the difference in quality of life based on location. Listen in for insight into the transgender experience and learn why you should always take the time to listen to someone else’s story!
For this episode I chat with Brynne Conroy, the blogger behind Femme Frugality and the new author of The Feminist Financial Handbook, about women, money, the wage gap, financial confidence and what we can all do as a society to make the future a more financially equal one. Long description: I hope you’re ready for a deep dive into women, oppression, victim blaming, leaning in, financial confidence and the wage gap, because that’s exactly what my next guest and I discuss for this episode of the Mo’ Money Podcast. I’m joined by Brynne Conroy, the blogger behind Femme Frugality and the new author of The Feminist Financial Handbook. And as you can guess from the title of her book, instead of writing another how-to finance book, Brynne decided to look at some of the big problems women face when it comes to finance and what we can do about it. I love this interview so much (as you can tell from my many tangents), because I obviously can relate a ton to the content of Brynne’s book. I’m a woman, and growing up I had no idea that I’d be treated differently, or paid less, when I entered the workforce. It’s the 21st century after all! Haven’t we moved past all that? Unfortunately, no we haven’t. There is still a lot of work to be done, and the issues of financial confidence and the wage gap aren’t just women’s problems. They are societal problems that we need to fix together. Women can’t fix the fact that they are paid less without the support of men as their allies. The only way we can make a different future for young girls is to work together now. It’s certainly something I’ve passionate about, and it’s honestly a big reason I was so drawn to personal finance in the first place. All of the books and personal finance experts I saw were men. I want to see more women represented. Luckily, I’m already seeing more women enter the personal finance space compared to 10 years ago, and that makes me incredibly happy and hopeful.
