On the other hand, I found other studies that show that up to 91% of people get anxious when it comes to purpose at least some point in their life, they feel frustrated and thwarted and depressed. And so the big question is how could it be both? And what I really came to the conclusion is purpose is not one thing but two. And one of those versions of purpose, what I call big P purpose, is more associated with anxiety while the other, what I call little p purpose, is probably more associated with that happiness, longevity, and health. And so I wrote this book to help people pursue that better version of purpose." On Purpose Anchors

Today's Money Tales episode is about purpose. Purpose is something we often talk about on Money Tales because, in our experience, when people align their relationship with money to their purpose, they make more satisfying and confident money decisions. Dr. Jordan Grumet joins us again on Money Tales. Since we last spoke with him, Jordan has been spending a lot of time talking and speaking about purpose. When he shared his message about purpose with audiences, he encountered something surprising: people weren't leaving inspired, they felt anxious. This “purpose anxiety,” as Jordan calls it, comes from society's obsession with what he dubs, “Big P Purpose”, the idea that happiness lies in discovering some grand, singular mission in life. Jordan invites us to embrace “Little p purpose” instead. It's about finding joy in the everyday; the simple things we love doing, the processes that light us up. By focusing on these small, tactile joys, we can take the weight off the search for “Big P” purpose and make it something approachable, fulfilling, and even fun. Jordan, born in Evanston, Illinois in 1973, found the spark to become a doctor after a deeply personal event reshaped his life's trajectory. The unexpected loss of his father, an oncologist, ignited a passion within him to practice medicine and instilled a unique vantage point that later melded seamlessly with his financial expertise. Hey everyone! Lauren has been having quite the summer, and with a couple of trips, buying/renovating a new primary, and a move we're doing a replay this week. Fear not, though, this is our most popular episode of the last couple of years so if you haven't listened yet, you'll love it. If you have listened, you may just love it again. Show notes: Athena got into the personal finance content creation world to help the Latina community (and everyone) learn along with her. She's passionate about helping her community because of the wage and income gaps present. Athena discusses the importance of diversifying income streams, as well as her investment portfolio. Since she literally wrote the (for dummies) book on budgeting, of course Lauren and Athena dove deep into this topic. The first method they talked about was zero based budgeting. The second was the 50/30/20 method, Lauren's favorite. The third budgeting method discussed was the cash envelope method, Athena's favorite. Finally, they talked about the pay yourself first budget, which is often not thought of as a budget at all! She offers tactical tips for sticking to a budget, like having groceries delivered. Athena also recommends an accountability partner, which can even be anonymous. Everyone should have a budget because it's the foundation on which all personal finance goals are based. About Athena: Athena Valentine Lent is a finance columnist for Slate and the author of Budgeting for Dummies (Wiley, 2023). Her writing has appeared in BuzzFeed, Prudential, The College Investor, GOBankingRates, Money Under 30, among other places. Her personal finance blog, Money Smart Latina, won the Plutus Award for "Best Personal Finance Content for Underserved Communities" in 2020 and was nominated for "Blog of the Year" in 2022. Editor's Note: This episode initially aired on July 20, 2022. It may contain some details that are out of date. According to one recent survey, only 4% of Americans have $1 million or more in retirement savings, which means 96% of us don't. Of course, depending on your situation, a million bucks may be overkill: Many people could fund their retirement years for a lot less. Still, it's a nice, round number, and one worth shooting for. Obviously, however, that's a lot of money. Is it even possible to get there? In a word, yes. And that's what we're going to talk about today: building a million-dollar nest egg, and just as important, how to figure out how much you're actually going to need. As usual, co-hosts Stacy Johnson and Miranda Marquit are joined by producer Aaron Freeman. This week's special guest is Roger Whitney, the Retirement Answer Man. Remember, even though we sometimes talk about specific investments on this show, don't take them as recommendations because they're not. Before investing in anything, do your own research, and make your own decisions. Today's podcast is a replay of a popular show we did a few months back. So if you didn't hear it the first time, or want to hear it again, now's your chance. Thanks for listening to Money Talks News…the podcast! If you're an avid investor…or even if you're not…at one time or another you've probably considered investing in individual stocks. I've been doing it for 40 years, and over that time have made well over a million dollars investing in the stocks of individual companies. And that's what we're going to talk about today. Stacy Johnson and financial journalist Miranda Marquit are joined by producer and novice investor Aaron Freeman. This week's guest is a friend of the show, Kevin Matthews, a former investment advisor and the author of Starting Point: How To Create Wealth That Lasts. Remember, even though we sometimes talk about specific investments on this show, don't take them as recommendations because they're not. Before investing in anything, do your own research, and make your own decisions. Financial independence. It's often presented by writers as the place dreams are made of. You've reached this magical place called "enough" and now life is all unicorns and rainbows. But what happens when you realize that the march toward shoveling everything toward an uncertain future is creating a horrible existence TODAY? That's what happened to Jess, one half of the Plutus Award winning coaching team The FIoneers. Jess and Corey came by Joe's mom's basement to tell the tale of their "a-ha" moment that led them to reject shoveling tons of cash from a hated job toward an early retirement...and maybe an early grave. Before that we celebrate our Halloween-kickoff episode with a visit from financial columnist and the host of the Money Life podcast, Chuck Jaffe. Chuck orchestrates an awesome, interesting, and always-changing economics game every Halloween with the trick-or-treat'ers who come by his home. What's the game this year? He'll share what he's planning, and hopefully inspire you to find clever ways to teach kids some money or economic lessons. Of course we also throw out the Haven Life line (this time all the way to India!), and Doug regales us with his mind-bending trivia. It's a Halloween party in the basement! Hope you can join us. In this episode of Money Tales, our guest is Dr. Jordan Grumet. Jordan's father was a doctor who sadly collapsed and died of a brain aneurysm while working at the hospital. Jordan was young at the time, and he was determined to grow up be just like his dad. Jordan figured that if he became a doctor he could step into his dad's shoes and do the things that his dad never got the chance to do. So, Jordan became a doctor and, after years of burnout, realized that the thing he thought was his main purpose and identity in life didn't fit him very well. This is when a new adventure and focus for Jordan began. Jordan Grumet was born in Evanston, Illinois in 1973. His interest in becoming a doctor was ignited when his father, an oncologist, died unexpectedly in the prime of life. This profound loss not only inspired him to practice medicine, but it has also given him a unique perspective as a financial expert, challenging him to think deeply and critically about concepts like wealth, abundance, and financial independence. After graduating from the University of Michigan, Jordan received his medical degree from Northwestern University, and began practicing Internal Medicine in Northbrook, Illinois. He currently is an associate medical director at Journeycare Hospice. After years of blogging about financial independence and wellness, Jordan launched the Earn & Invest podcast in 2018. In 2019 he received the Plutus Award for Best New Personal Finance Podcast and was nominated in 2020 and 2021 for Best Personal Finance Podcast of the year. His book, "Taking Stock: A Hospice Doctor's Advice on Financial Independence, Building Wealth, and Living a Regret-Free Life" was published by Ulysses Press in August 2022.
