PIKE'S FORMER CRUSH has a secret and this week we have guest co-host Cassie Soliday from The Ink & Paint Folk Podcast to talk about it! Is the perfect world of Majalis too good to be true or does it just seem that way to Federation outsiders? Meanwhile, Cadet Uhura gets exposed to La'an's list of security rules -- which are more like guidelines -- and Dr. M'Benga's doctor goes on a playdate. Does this episode setup a disturbing motif in this new Star Trek series, or were the writers really just horny for the ending they wrote and worked backwards from that? THIS EPISODE ENDS IN A SPLIT VOTE! What grade do you think this episode deserves? Vote via Twitter (@trekmarrykpod), our website, or through the Spotify app! If you're interested in animation, check out Cassie's podcast, and if you're enjoying our show, consider rating us five stars on Apple Podcasts and leaving a review. "Now hear this. Now hear this. On this week's episode of Kirking Off the lads get back to some NuTrek and Strange New Worlds is on the docket. There is a comet hurtling towards Persephone III and Captain Pike decides to intervene in what would be a catastrophic loss of life. What should have been a routine mission turns into a life threatening struggle with the Shepherds, a species that has been tasked with safeguarding the comet which they refer to as M'hanit. They call Pike's attempted intervention as "absurd" and things get religious. We learn that Cadet Uhura lost her parents and brother in a shuttlecraft accident and she ended up in Starfleet on the flagship as the communications officer? This episode features her knowledge of music theory and her ability to sing becomes a communication line to M'hanit. Prompting question this week: Is Uhura's flippancy with Spock's position and rank a problem with character writing or is it part of the larger trend in modern storytelling? Other topics include Captain Pike's hair, harmonics in music, Nathan's discovery of the "M" note on the musical scale, an imagined, incompetent communications officer, and some fancy-pants space flying from the Enterprise. We present to you, "Children of the Comet," from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds." HOT GORN ACTION! The Enterprise comes face to face with the mysterious Gorn, realizing La'an's worst nightmare! With the entire ship under constant attack, the episode splits into multiple storylines: Cadet Uhura and Lt. Hemmer are trapped in the cargo bay; and, Number One is trapped in Sickbay with the manic pixie dream Nurse Chapel. Listen to this one to find out what Bryan and Krsiten think about using mind melds to help with psychotherapy, a glistening Anson Mount, and the movie Interstellar.

Tread Perilously's annual Star Trek month concludes with the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds episode "The Elysian Kingdom" -- the lowest rated hour according to IMDb. While analyzing a nebula, the Enterprise becomes stuck and its crew re-assembled as characters from a fairy tale Dr. M'Benga reads to his daughter. Recast as the King from the story -- but still cognizant of who he really is -- M'Benga soon encounters Captain Pike as the cowardly chamberlain, Spock as an evil Wizard, Lt. Ortegas as the faithful knight, Lt. Noonien-Singh as the flighty, but friendly princess of a nearby realm, and Cadet Uhura as the wicked queen. Will M'Benga sort out why this is happening and why Chief Engineer Hemmer also maintains his sense of self? Erik ends up high on a vaccine reaction while Justin takes advantage of the situation via a joke well past its freshness date. Both also gush about the series, their favorite of modern Star Trek. A Sons of Anarchy detour also occurs. Erik learns a new term and works very hard to remember the name "Lawrence Tierney." Geography Corner turns into an inspection of LA-area revival theater restrooms. Pike's would-be smugness and excitement to be in space are examined. The problem of prestige TV comes up and the pair weep once more for Boromir.

Brian & LT are joined by Wes Huntington, co-host of the Twin Cities Trekkies Podcast as they talk through Star Trek: Strange New Worlds S1E5 titled Spock Amok. This episode was written by co-executive producer Henry Alonso Myers & Robin Wasserman, and Rachel Leiterman directed it. This episode had a great homage to Amok Time, while also being a good character-based romantic comedy. They all loved it, but Brian a little less, he thought probably due to a poor viewing experience.

Just a routine cartographic survey! Should be pretty boring, actually. Except, the Enterprise comes out of warp and receives a distress signal from a vessel under attack and when they save them and beam the survivors aboard, one of them is old shoulda'/coulda'/woulda' love interest of a young Lieutenant Pike. Also, one of them is a child monarch/deity of the people on the planet Majalis that is destined lead their people through some unspecified sacrifice. And his dad. Needless to say, things get hairy. There are crosses and double-crosses, there is romance, and intrigue. And there is a critical moral quandary at the center of things. Finally, Cadet Uhura is doing her crew rotations in security with La'an Noonien-Singh. She's learning a lot, as usual. And also, breaks the whole things wide open when it counts! This week Mike, Yvette, and Matthew, discuss the next episode of Strange New Worlds, "Children of the Comet." Captain Pike invites members of the crew to his quarters for dinner, and the party includes Cadet Uhura. We learn a lot about her background, including that she's not sure if Starfleet is for her. She's also a singer, but more on that later. A rogue comet is going to strike an inhabited world and the Enterprise tries to alter its course, only to find out that there's a structure on the comet. While a landing party heads over to try and figure out why this comet has a forcefield, the Enterprise comes across the Shepherds, who don't want them to do anything to the comet, who they revere as a god. Uhura figures out that the comet responds to music, and that is the basis of its language. Spock is able to break up the comet without touching it, using heat shields from a shuttle, making the Shepherds happy. What did we think about the episode? Will Uhura continue her path in Starfleet? Find out on this episode of Discovering Trek: Strange New Worlds!

Captain Pike and the crew of the Enterprise discover a complicated comet under the escort of the Shepherds. Cadet Uhura must overcome self-doubt to help solve the crisis.
Cadet Uhura attends a dinner at the captain's table with a bunch of senior staff and other officers during which she admits that though she beat out several thousand applicants for the job on Enterprise, she might not be "all that Star Fleet." Meanwhile, a comet the Enterprise is observing is on course to destroy a nearby planet with a young, pre-warp culture and when they try to push it off course, they discover that it has some alien tech on it. What follows is an away team (which includes Cadet Uhura on her first away misson) that goes to the comet and gets trapped by a force-field and has to learn to sing to a giant egg to get free. Meantime, the Enterprise is getting shook down by "shepherds" of the comet who think of the away team as a desecration. And it all comes down to clever math and translations, fancy flying from Ortegas, sneaky-sneakiness from Spock, and nerves of pure steel from Captain Pike. Can they pull it off? Will they pull it off?! and will Uhura stay with Star Fleet?! No telling! Join us for more BTS nerdy fun on http://patreon.com/setphasers
