In 2007, Judy Byrd got involved in the blind community by volunteering at the Center for the Visually Impaired in Atlanta, Georgia. In 2010, she agreed to help start a beep baseball team. For the next seven years, she was the manager of the Atlanta Eclipse Beep Baseball Team. While practicing with the new team, she noticed that all the beep baseball players were older teens and adults, wondering what team sport the younger kids who were visually impaired were playing. To fill this gap, Judy created Beep Kickball. Fourteen years later, over 700 beep kickballs have been sold around the country, in Canada and Australia. Since retiring in 2012, she has been heavily involved in promoting Camp Abilities. For most children in the United States, participating in sports and spending time with peers is a given. But for children who are visually impaired, these are not givens. Camp Abilities, a worldwide, week-long camp for children with blindness or vision impairment provides the environment, the support and the expectation that all children can participate on the ball field, the tennis courts or anywhere! Camp Abilities is an educational sports camp, but for children who are visually impaired, it's one week where sports, recreation and making new friends IS a given. In this month's episode of BEST Together, Alison sat down with Judy to discuss Beep Kickball and all things Camp Abilities.

Her work focuses on kids who are visually impaired and those who are deaf and blind. She teaches adaptive physical education at SUNY Brockport. She pursued her doctorate because she felt that she could reach more people with that degree. And in teaching, she founded Camp Abilities. This has helped her, her students, and the countless kids who have taken part. Lauren began a program to expose her students to those with visual impairments and in turn, give visually impaired kids programs that suited them. Her program, Camp Abilities, is worldwide now. She received a Fulbright to pursue this internationally. Camp Abilities is an educational sports camp for children with visual impairments. Part of what Lauren hopes to teach these kids is they can make a career out of what they are passionate about. Over the first few years, she was in the red and the university fronted the cost. But she wanted to make sure the camp was accessible and not cost-prohibitive. She applies to and receives many grants which helps. Grant programs and donors make all the difference. This podcast is very near to my heart as I have been blessed to have been apart of starting a Camp Abilities in Michigan. Camp Abilities is a sports camp specially designed for children with visual impairments. At Camp Abilities we grow leadership and sports skills in our campers and provide a unique experience for children with visual impairments. There are Camp Abilities all over the world, with most of them based within the United States. For this podcast we had Camp Abilities directors from all over the US. We were happy to have directors from Maryland, New York, St. Louis, and Alaska. We were also joined by the founder of Camp Abilities, Dr. Lauren Lieberman. This will be the first of a three part podcast focusing on what is Camp Abilities, how camp benefits children with visual impairments, and how camp gets the community involved in adapted sports and promote children with visual impairments to be more active in their own communities.
