She is also a Health Education Specialist at the Hawaiʻi State Department of Education. Nadine has 17 years of experience in education (PreK-12), which includes service as a teacher and leader. She specializes in health education and mentoring to improve student learning and teacher practice. She is Experienced in designing curriculum, instruction, and assessments aligned to National Health Education Standards. Nadine has facilitated and collaborated with diverse stakeholders to review, adopt, and implement National Health Education Standards in the Hawai‘i State Department of Education.Sarah Sparrow Benes (she/her) is currently an Assistant Professor & Program Coordinator of the School Health Education program at Southern Connecticut State University and SHAPE America's President. She transitioned from her role as an Associate Clinical Profession at Merrimack College in fall 2022. She has an Ed.D. in curriculum and teaching, an Ed.M. in human movement, a master's degree in public health, and a B.S. in athletic training. She alsoconducts research related to school- and community-based physical activityprograms and initiatives that enhance health and wellness.  Ben Schwamberger is an Associate Professor of Health andPhysical Education, in the Human Performance Department at Minnesota StateUniversity, Mankato (MSU, Mankato). He currently serves on the SHAPE AmericaProfessional Preparation Council as well as the Recruitment and Retention TaskForce and is an active member of his state association MNSHAPE. At MSU, Mankatohe is the undergraduate program coordinator for the Health and PhysicalEducation program. On the podcast, they discuss their careers, the journey to creating this text, why self-advocacy is important for ALL students, and more!  Ruth ChildsRuth Childs, MFA, is a professor at State University of New York at Brockport. She has been at the College of Brockport Department of Theatre and Music Studies since 2001. Her teaching specialties include public speaking, acting, voice and speech, improv, and the politics of theatre. Childs served as regional chair of the National Playwriting Program for Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival and has been a respondent and reader for national and regional playwriting awards. She was awarded the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival Gold Medallion. Childs is a public speaking consultant as well as a specialist in teaching self-advocacy. She directs the self-advocacy program at Camp Abilities each summer. Lauren J. LiebermanLauren J. Lieberman, Ph.D., is a Distinguished Service Professor in the Kinesiology Department at the State University of New York at Brockport (SUNY) in adapted physical education. She started her career teaching at the Perkins School for the Blind in the Deafblind program. She is co-director of the Institute on Movement Studies for Individuals with Visual Impairments or Deafblindness (IMSVI) (see www.brockport.edu/IMSVI) and founder and director of Camp Abilities, an educational sports camp for children with visual impairments. Lieberman has published over 193 peer-reviewed articles and 21 books and has been an invited guest speaker in the U.S. and internationally. She is a Research Fellow with the International Federation of Adapted Physical Activity and has won awards from numerous organizations for her work.   Mary Connolly Mary Connolly, BS, Med, is a professor at Cambridge College and adjunct professor at Curry College. She is an accomplished health education professional whose career spans nearly four decades and includes teaching and administration in public schools and higher education. Connolly served on the committee to revise the National Health Education Standards and is a member of the Massachusetts Interdisciplinary Health Education and Human Services Advisory Council and the American School Health Association (ASHA), Coordinator's Committee, and is a reviewer for the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. She presents at numerous state and national conferences and is a member of SHAPE America, AAHE, SOPIE, ASHA, ASCD, and MAAHPERD.

At the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, she held a three-year post in which she worked to prevent type II diabetes among middle school youth in the most extensive school-based physical activity intervention in the United States. Dr. Blackshear's commitment to equity is evident in her work that appears in Quest, Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy, Journal of Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities, and numerous other journals. She is actively engaged with SHAPE America, SHAPE Maryland, Partnership for a Healthier America, Physical and Health Education Canada, International Association for Physical Education in Higher Education (AIESEP), USA Lacrosse, PhysEquity, and Baltimore City Public Schools. Dr. Blackshear's research has garnered national and international attention. She has begun to have an impact on institutional change, policy, and practice, as evidenced by consultation requests from organizations and agencies that seek her help in their goal of creating culturally responsive, equitable environments. Critical Race Studies in Physical Education furthers Dr. Blackshear's unwavering commitment to confront and disrupt structures that do not serve Black youth in health, physical activity, and education. Brian Culp, Ed.D., is a professor and department chair in the WellStar College of Health and Human Services at Kennesaw State University. Prior to his current position, Dr. Culp taught at Armstrong Atlantic State University and Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis. Dr. Culp's research has incorporated topics under the umbrella of promoting equity. His work has appeared in journals such as Quest, Pedagogy in Health Promotion, Qualitative Health Research, and International Journal of Sports Science & Coaching as well as many other journals and books. He has also worked on projects for organizations such as Physical and Health Education Canada, SHAPE America, the Centers for Disease Control, and the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.  Dr. Culp was inducted as the 34th fellow of the National Association for Kinesiology in Higher Education (NAKHE) in 2019. He is a past vice president and Engaged Scholar Mentor of NAKHE. Other national recognitions have included a dissertation award from the Georgia Association of Teacher Educators; the Hally Beth Poindexter Young Scholar Award from NAKHE; and the Mabel Lee Award, the Social Justice and Diversity Young Professionals Award, and the E.B. Henderson Award from SHAPE America.

    Sean catches up with Brandy Lynch from the University of Central Missouri to chat about Women's Social Justice in Sport. This is the final episode of our first EDI series, What is Social Justice?.Brandy Lynch is an assistant professor in the School of Teaching and Learning at the University of Central Missouri (UCM). She specializes in the application of technology in instruction and the analysis of effective teaching. She earned her Ph.D. in sport and exercise science from the University of Northern Colorado and began her career at UCM in 2017. Her research has primarily focused on pre-service physical education teachers.  Lynch currently serves on SHAPE America's EDI Committee. She is also a member of MOSHAPE's EDI Committee and chair of the Future Directions Committee on the MOSHAPE Board of Directors. Motivated by her EDI experiences, she has received two Kansas City Teacher Education Collaborative (KC-TEC) Course Development grants to promote culturally informed and responsive teacher candidates who are prepared for employment in urban settings.

She has an Ed.D. in curriculum and teaching, an Ed.M. in human movement, a master's degree in public health, and a B.S. in athletic training. Sarah started her career at Boston University as an athletic trainer before transitioning to the role of Physical and Health Education Teacher Prep Program Director. Sarah works in schools locally and nationally, and writes and presents on various health education topics. She lives in Massachusetts,  where she enjoys reading, hiking, yoga and meditation, and adventures with her family. Ann Paulls-Neal is currently teaching health and physical education, as well as coaching, at the high school level. Previously, she spent 20 years teaching elementary physical education. She is a National Board Certified Teacher in Early and Middle Childhood Physical Education. Ann has served SHAPE New Mexico (NMAHPERD), Southwest District AHPERD, and SHAPE America throughout her teaching career. She is currently executive director of SHAPE New Mexico and a member of the SHAPE America Physical Activity Council. Previous positions include SHAPE America Board of Directors member, president of Southwest District and NMAHPERD, as well as a variety of board, committee, and coordinator positions.

    Sean is joined by guests from our recruitment and retention task force to discuss For the Love of Health and Physical Education (HPE) Week! Emily Jones is a Professor of Physical Education Teacher Education, in the School of Kinesiology and Recreation at Illinois State University. She is the current chair of the SHAPE America Recruitment and Retention Task Force and serves at the state level as the chair of the IAHPERD Higher Education Committee. At Illinois State she is program director for the undergraduate PE teacher education and coordinates the fully online master's in Physical Education Pedagogy sequence at ISU. Dr. Jones conducts research related to recruitment into the field of physical education including the need to increase the diversity of those entering the teaching force. She also conducts research related to school- and community-based physical activity programs and initiatives that enhance health and wellness.  Ben Schwamberger is an Associate Professor of Health and Physical Education, in the Human Performance Department at Minnesota State University, Mankato (MSU, Mankato). He currently serves on the SHAPE America Professional Preparation Council as well as the Recruitment and Retention Task Force and is an active member of his state association MNSHAPE. At MSU, Mankato he is the undergraduate program coordinator for the Health and Physical Education program. Dr. Schwamberger's research interests relate to physical education and physical activity of homeschool students. Prior to his position in higher education, Dr. Schwamberger was an elementary and high school physical educator and taught within the United States as well as abroad.  Victor Ramsey currently works for the New York City Department of Education where he is an Educational Administrator who currently works as a Curriculum and Training Specialist within the Office of School Wellness Programs as part of the Brooklyn Implementation Team. In this capacity, he is responsible for supporting his team with developing training designs and curriculum review and development and supports health and physical educators and school administrators. He is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor at York College, City University of New York teaching health and physical education classes to undergraduate students. In the latter role, he serves as Faculty Advisor and in the supervision of student teachers. Prior roles, NYCDOE Region 9 Director for Health and Physical Education, Middle School Assistant Principal, Dean of Students, and most notably, a health and physical education teacher. Essentially, a teacher at heart. His research interest is the attitudes and physical activity patterns of girls. He is a proud member of the SHAPE America Recruitment and Retention Task Force. His philosophy of education is grounded on the progressive belief that equity and respect for all students are essential to their growth and development. Amy Dawson currently works for the New York City Department of Education as a Health Education Instructional Coach within the Office of School Wellness Programs.  She was a health teacher for 19 years in Brooklyn public middle schools. She has facilitated full-day professional development workshops in all five boroughs, wrote the NYCDOE Middle School Health Education Scope and Sequence and has presented at both NYSAHPERD and SHAPE America conferences. She served on the New York State Mental Health Education Advisory Council.

Currently he teaches Introduction to Sociology and a course that he designed for the county called Hip-Hop History and Culture. He is a strong advocate for teacher leadership outside of the classroom as well. He serves on the leadership team for the BOND (Building our Network of Diversity) Project which is an initiative focused on increasing the hiring, development and retention of male educators of color. He is also on the executive committee for the Minority Scholars Program (MSP), a youth-driven, social justice initiative designed to address the opportunity gaps that exist within the educational system. He's dedicated to building the capacity of educators to be reflective, culturally responsive practitioners and social justice advocates for traditionally marginalized learners. Daniel is a Learning, Development and Inclusion partner at Burrell Behavioral Health and focuses on advancing, expanding and improving behavioral health with a focus on inclusion. Daniel and Sean have partnered with young professionals and community leaders in promoting diversity and inclusion. Their conversation started with the importance of the growing profession of equity, diversity, and inclusion and then they dove deep into mental health and the disparities that teachers and students of color face. They rounded out the conversation talking about how physical activity and sports can benefit marginalized students and addressed the community involvement aspect of the WSCC model
