Kevin Winnick was working in Washington DC for a small chain of pop culture/entertainment-themed stores called Another Universe when he got a call from a headhunter saying a large company was looking to hire someone who could identify trends and had experience as a buyer. Though content where he was, Kevin took the interview and before long found himself dressed  in a nice shirt and tie while George Scarlett sat at his desk, bare feet plopped on his desk. From the moment Kevin joined Tower he felt like an outsider. From the get-go he was ordering and shipping products to the stores he thought were on board, but was often met with resistance. Initially, Kevin was brought in as a “trend spotter”, but as the years passed it appeared Kevin was in charge of it, if it wasn't audio, video, or a book. The Sidelines department eventually grew to include blank tape, accessories, electronics, candy, and soda…you name it, he ordered it for the store. And yes, those “Planet of the Apes” cookie jars. In this week's episode, we discuss Kevin's somewhat tumultuous journey at Tower and hear in detail about what he was proud of and what could have gone better.

Challenges & Goals One of the main challenge lies in overcoming educators' fear and resistance towards Artificial Intelligence (AI). Her goal is to demonstrate how AI can save time and enhance teaching processes, shifting the focus from end products to assessing learning processes.Surprising Takeaways While not a surprise per so, but the idea on how many school districts lack clear policies on AI use.Emerging PatternsThe need for education leaders to understand disruptive technologies like AI.The importance of incorporating these technologies into their systems.A shift in assessment methods focusing more on learning processes rather than end products. The necessity for educators to adapt quickly to technological advancements like AI.The continued importance of human connection despite technological advances.Key Moments"My main focus lately has been on generative artificial intelligence…the word generative means that the AI is generating content.""I think most importantly for me is that they left knowing we support them. Our position is that we support them using it.""If you assess a learning process, that's what you should be assessing. Not the end product…""It goes back to the old age-old question… What is the purpose of education?"Challenges & Goals Keep up with staying updated with new tools and technologies while ensuring alignment with educational goals.

Meredith saw an opportunity to put her assignment to good use in looking for strategies to support her pupil, and today's presentation is the result.Meredith's recommendations are relevant to subjects across the curriculum, and it's especially good to see Meredith presenting today, as she was a Research Bites viewer before coming on the PGCE programme, and wasn't expecting to be called up to contribute! Thanks to Meredith for making her visual summary available, which you can download here.If you'd like to see the video version of this episode, you can head over to our YouTube channel, Professional Learning with the Cardiff Partnership.Meredith's main sources are:Dillon, G.V., Underwood, J.D. and Freemantle, L.J. Today's guest on Uncorking a Story, Karen Winnick, reminds me so much of my mother. Both are from Brooklyn and are animal lovers who would rather set a spider free than squish it. But unless my mother has been hiding the fact that she is a successful children's book author searching to teach children about compassion for animals through her writing, that's where the similarities may end. Meet Karen Winnick: Karen is the author of more than a dozen picture books for children, most of which she illustrated. An animal lover, she serves on several boards devoted to the well-being of animals. She joins me today to talk about her life and latest book, Can You Spot the Leopard?: An African Safari, which was inspired by a real Safari Karen went on before the pandemic. Key Topics: How a friend's eccentric pair of shoes inspired her first attempt at writing an animated children's book entitled Happy Soles. Why she wants to teach children compassion for animals through her picture books. The importance of her work giving children a voice. How she stayed connected to her passion of reading to children throughout the pandemic, and the new opportunities it brought her. What we can learn from disabled animals. Description: A few years ago I received advice that every leader should have a mentor who is 20 years younger than them. In the reckoning of June 2020, I found mine in Noah Winnick and Josue Barnes. The duo founded Claremont Change and have been representing the voices of marginalized people in the community since the inception of the organization.  They are fearless advocates who are relentless in their commitment and vision in creating an antiracist Claremont and I will follow them, quite literally in peaceful protest, to the ends of the earth.  The synergy between these lifelong friends is animating to witness. Somehow they are able to make the daunting and often draining work of social justice joyful and approachable. They authentically show up for their hometown and I am so proud to be in arms with them as I do my part in shaping the city where I have rooted my family.  I hope you enjoy this time with “The Rom-Com Boys” as much I did.  Show Highlights:    Fostering fearlessness and Cat's The Musical  The weight and responsibility of speaking out in a town that you were raised in.  How to bring humor and irrepressible joy to the daunting journey that is social justice advocating.  Learning how to hold your own as the baby of the family. Trusting instincts and accepting that just because someone knows more than you doesn't mean they'll be helpful.  Navigating trust in politically charged strategies. Learning that knowledge does not imply truth or helpfulness.    Show Resources:  Claremont Change Order Becky's Book Impact With Integrity: Repair the World Without Breaking Yourself

Mary speaks with Joely about their work many years ago - the strategies and tools Joely learned still resonate with them both. Joely is currently working as a member of a media agency for the Loreal account. Joely met Mary Miele when she was in the 9th grade. She was struggling to find a tutor to connect with and was having difficulty with critical thinking - especially the questions of “why” or “how come.” It was hard for her to make sense of what she was being asked to write, even though she could understand the reading. In their work together, Joely learned how to understand what the questions were asking by breaking down the questions and prioritizing what to attend to. Mary speaks about the curiosity she engaged in while working with Joely. She was noticing an emotional disconnection with the work and wanted to understand that more. Mary spent a lot of time asking questions. Teachers could understand Joely's challenge by naming it as a reading comprehension issue or not demonstrating effort. In contrast, Mary saw Joely as putting forth a great amount of effort. Mary asked, “What is going on here that is causing this challenge?” When they met, Mary would break up the question and prioritize what is relevant to the question to help us answer the question. They identified key words. Mary found that Joely loved colors and pens. She would use the pens to color code and have so much fun doing the breakdown. Mary also told Joely to use the colors in testing in class. This work with Joely caused Mary to ask, “What lights this kid up? What makes this more interesting?” The colors allowed Joely to differentiate what to pay attention to. Joely used this strategy and tool to study in college. She jokes that her friends tried to copy her and steal her colored pens. Mary points out how at one point in their work together she said, “do you notice I did nothing here?” She pointed out how capable Joely was while they worked. Joely speaks about how she found that part to be really helpful because she was struggling in so many ways - but after each session she would feel so much more confident. Joely speaks about how valuable this work has been for her in the long term. She uses the strategy of breaking up and asking for help even now in the workplace. Joely learned in her work to ask for help and be patient for herself. Mary wanted this tutoring to be a transferable for the long term. In the industry of organizing, decluttering is a main part of the process. One reason why people sometimes hold back on letting go of things is because they don't necessarily know where their donated items will end up and they also do not feel they are getting a fair amount of money when they resell. On this week's episode, we are so excited to have re-sale expert, Stacey Winnick as our guest. She is the creator of the popular online virtual tag sale Chappaqua Moms Sales which has sold everything from jewelry to cars (Ms. Winnick recently sold a $10,000 Lexus in 24 hours). As the Social Media Spokesperson for the Sustainability Committee in Westchester County, NY, Ms. Winnick cannot bare to see an item go to waste. Her motto: recycle and reuse. She is an appraiser and antiques blogger, and as a vintage stylist, sold vintage clothing to such film and television shows as “Titanic”, “Cider House Rules”, “Riding in Cars with Boys”, and “Sex in the City”. Ms. Winnick’s been covered by the New York Times, Vogue Magazine, New York Magazine, InStyle Magazine, CBS Radio, TheTodayShow.com, CNBC.com, and in The Journal News.Get ready to learn how to turn your clutter into cash!
